Description

Leuchtschirm.

So kön nen z.

So ergibt z.

Luminescent screen. The present invention relates to a fluorescent screen.

Luminous screens are used for some purposes. So z. B. in X-ray technology, a fluorescent screen for observing X-ray images (so-called Durchleuch processing screen) and used to amplify the effect of the X-rays on photographic material.

In combination with electrical discharge tubes, luminous screens z. B. Braun tubes and used to implement a radiation generated by electrical discharge radiation in radiation with a longer wave length. In Braun tubes, the screen is generally located inside the tube, since the electron absorption of the tube wall is large and the amount of electrons passed through would generally be too small to generate a clear image on a luminescent screen arranged outside the tube. In a discharge tube in which radiation is generated, part of which is converted by the fluorescent screen, the screen can also be outside the tube, for.

   B. on a reflector, because it is possible to make tubular vessels that let through at least part of the radiation generated in the discharge with a relatively low absorption behaves. An example of such a tubular vessel is a mercury vapor discharge tube in which a large amount of ultraviolet rays is generated; the wall of the tube z. B. made of quartz, so a wesent Licher part of this radiation is transmitted, which can then excite a screen angeord Neten outside the tube.

There are already many phosphors for use in such screens are known, but an expansion of this number of substances is what he wants. every substance has a specific luminescence and other properties, so that it is particularly suitable for some purposes and less suitable for others.

If you have a certain goal in mind, where you want to use a luminescent screen, then, of course, the main focus is on whether the substance to be used is compatible. the available radiation (which also includes corpuscular rays) can be excited; you will also pay attention to the color of the lighting, the efficiency and the temperature dependency. If the requirements for these properties are fixed, the number of phosphors that can be used is limited. In addition, other chemical or physical properties inherent in such substances must be taken into account, e.g. B.

resistance to radiation or to discharge and the possibility of applying a good even layer; Furthermore, a simple production mode of the substances is desirable. From the foregoing it is therefore clear that it is desirable to have a large number of substances available, which on the one hand have several common properties, but on the other hand have certain differences.

The invention relates to a luminescent screen which contains at least one crystalline phosphate of aluminum, bismuth being present as an activator. Alkali metals can also occur together with aluminum.

It is already known that bismuth can share luminous properties with various substances. So was u. a. It has already been described that aluminum oxide activated with bismuth lights up blue or red when exposed to cathode rays.

Furthermore, types of glass are already known in which at least 20 a phosphorus pentoxide and, in addition to the elements barium, aluminum and magnesium, bismuth is present as an activating metal. A mercury vapor discharge tube made from such a type of glass is luminescent blue-like white.

In contrast to luminous types of glass, luminous screens according to the invention have particularly good efficiencies in cathode ray tubes.

A particularly advantageous property associated with the use of crystalline phosphates is that the processing temperature of the phosphors can be selected to be relatively low.

In phosphates that are present in a screen according to the invention, the ratio between aluminum and the phosphoric acid can be selected in an area with widely differing limits. So can nen z. B. both orthophosphates, pyrophosphates and metaphosphates can be used.

If alkali metals are also present in addition to aluminum, then the sum of aluminum and alkali metals will be taken into account to calculate the amount of phosphoric acid.

A substance that can be used in a fluorescent screen that is used in conjunction with a mercury vapor discharge tube is bismuth-activated aluminum orthophosphate. This substance can be excited by the mercury line with a wavelength of 2537 A and produces a yellow-green luminescence.

The required amount of activator can be changed within wide limits. So z. B. 1 atom of bismuth for 100,000 molecules of phosphate already produces a clearly perceptible luminescence when bombarded with electrons. At lower bismuth contents, the intensity of the illumination decreases, while between 10 and 10 000 atoms of bismuth per 100 000 molecules of phosphate the light intensity is little dependent on the bismuth content. A preparation containing 30 atoms of bismuth per 100 moles of phosphate again produces significantly lower luminescence.

In addition to the phosphates described above, other luminescent substances can also be present in the luminescent screen described.
