Description

Method for extracting nicotine and installation for carrying out said method. The present invention relates to a process for extracting nicotine from tobacco residues and to an installation which makes it possible to carry out said process.

Nicotine and certain nicotine salts are gaining more and more importance in the market because of their use in agriculture and horticulture, as parasiticides.

Nicotine is extracted from tobacco juice, the product of methodical washing of ribs and unusable residues. This juice is a chemically complex mixture containing, in addition to various organic and mineral salts, a certain quantity of nicotine, either free or combined, the importance of which depends on the tobacco used, as well as on essential oils of little known composition.

The general method of extracting nicotine is to liberate it from its combinations (malates, oxalates, etc.) by a base, such as lime, and to entrain the alkaloid by a stream of vapors in towers of contact where a stream of sulfuric acid fixes the nicotine in the form of sulfate, which is then treated with caustic soda. The released alkaloid is finally concentrated and distilled.

The inventor has designed a process that allows this extraction to be carried out rationally and economically, this process is characterized in that steam is passed through a battery of boilers communicating with a vapor collector and containing said residues. as well as an alkali, in that the nicotine-rich vapor is countercurrently treated in at least two contact turns with dilute sulfuric acid, part of the exhausted vapor being re-admitted into the boilers, while that the other passes through a heat recuperator, in that the sulfuric nicotine solution is treated with an alkali, the nicotine released from the waste water is separated by centrifugation and the latter is purified by distillation under reduced pressure.

The invention also comprises an installation for the implementation of said process, characterized in that it comprises a battery of boilers communicating with a common manifold, a steam injector to bring it to the boilers, contact towers. with sulfuric acid, a heat recuperator, a neutralization tank, a centrifuge device and a distillation device. The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the installation for carrying out the process according to the invention.

To facilitate understanding, we have schematically represented in a, b, c, d, e, f, g, respectively, the pipes of sulfuric acid, nicotinic liquids, hot water, condensation water, cold water, waste water and vapors. The chopped tobacco waste is loaded by a bucket elevator onto a conveyor with a capacity of five quintals per hour, which introduces it into the boiler 1.0 by means of a hopper 14. The boilers which will be discussed below are made of sheet iron with a thickness of 1 cm and provided with closable openings. There is preferably a pressure of two atmospheres.

It is in the boiler 10 that the tobacco juice is prepared, to which a quantity of lime sufficient to neutralize the acids present and to release the nicotine is added. The hydrated lime required, at the rate of 50 to 100 kg per load, must be slaked beforehand in a special pit.

The steam circuit is as follows. Injector 15 feeds boiler 10 from below. The steam which leaves the top of the boiler 10 enters the bottom of the boiler 11 and so on up to the boiler 13. From the top of the boiler 13, the. steam passes through the collector which brings it to cyclone 17 and from there successively to turns 18 and 19.

When the boiler 10 is exhausted, the steam is directed to the boiler 11 and it leaves through the boiler 13 as long as the operations of emptying, cleaning and charging the boiler 10 are in progress. Then, the valve feeding the manifold from the boiler 13 is closed, and the steam is brought from the boiler 13 to the bottom of the boiler 10. It enters the manifold from the top of the boiler 10.

When the boiler 11 is exhausted, it is done. to enter steam into boiler 1? and exit to the manifold continues to be through the top of boiler 10, "as long as boiler 11 is being drained, cleaned and loaded.

We continue in this way, each boiler successively becoming the first to receive steam, and the one preceding it seeing it in the collector. It is therefore through the most exhausted boiler that the steam enters the circuit and through the least exhausted boiler that it leaves to enter the collector. When. a boiler is exhausted, it is brought to atmospheric pressure by opening a discharge valve. A click opens the lower door of the boiler: the liquid and tobacco residues are discharged onto the storage area.

The boiler is. washed in hot or cold water and removed from the remains of exhausted tobacco after which, with the lower door closed, the boiler is loaded and prepared for a new extraction.

It takes about six hours between charging and discharging a boiler. Depending on the qualities of tobacco to be treated, this duration will vary: it will be possible, moreover, depending on the case, to push the extraction further and continue the operation beyond the usual time. During the discharge, the residues are dumped on an inclined area and spread in a thin layer, while the liquid which flows is collected by a channel which leads it into a pit.

The injector 15 brings high pressure steam into the installation. This drags with it part of the steam which has already passed through the contact towers 18 and 19. This steam can pass through the boilers 10, 11, 1; 3, 13, thanks to a manifold and to separate pipes. for each boiler. The steam always enters by the bottom of a boil their, bubbled in the nicotinous material and comes out at the upper part to go to the following boiler: or to the collector.

In the installation shown, the nicotinous vapor collector leads to a cy- dust collector 17 where the liquid fraction and any residues are returned by means of a pipe siphon to one or more of the boilers mentioned. The fear, on the contrary, is brought to the foot of the first contact tower 18, through which it rises in counter-current and meets a rain of sulfuric acid which descends; this results in the formation of nicotine sulfate.

The partially exhausted steam exits from the top of tower 18, passes through lead piping and arrives at the foot of tower 19, where it is exhausted by a second backwash with a solution of sulfuric acid. diluted. The steam finally passes through an area of the tower 19 of larger section, where its speed is slower and where it tends to abandon the fraction of sulfuric acid that it has possibly carried with it. Part of the exhausted steam is then returned by the injector 15 into the circuit. distillers; the other part of the vapor stream is sent to the heat recuperator 24 where it is used to produce hot water for washing said boilers and to prepare the extraction charge.

After leaving its condensation water in the recuperator 24, the steam is released into the atmosphere.

The devices 16 are refrigerants making it possible to condense test portions of the vapor of each boiler or of the cyclone.

Line b is used to recover the condensed values taken as samples at capacitors 16. This line can be removed without inconvenience.

Line f is the flow of cold water passing through condensers 16 and leading this water to the sewer.

The cold water from the general supply pipe of the plant is used on the one hand to fill the heat recovery unit 24 and, on the other hand, to cool the condensers 16.

The pipe c starts from the bottom of the heat recovery unit: 24 and serves to fill the boilers with hot water, at the time of loading each boiler.

The sulfuric acid circulated in the contact towers comes from the reservoir 25. It can travel one tower after another or several Ibis in a row the same tower. Each of the towers 18 and 19 has at its base a section heated by circulation of steam. The liquid circulation of towers 18 and 19 is provided by pumps 21 and? \? respectively.

At the bottom of said towers, test portions are collected in a small lead funnel and are conducted in a tube with visible level and provided with a hydrometer. Reading the height and density allows you to adjust the heating of the corresponding cut. This heating prevents the condensation of water vapor in said towers. It also makes it possible to evaporate the overflow of water which could be produced by condensation in the towers; he. It is then sufficient to intensify the heating of the sections.

The devices 20 and 23 are the bleeders of the heating system of the cuts of towers 18 and 19. The pump 22 also makes it possible to bring the sulphate still containing acid from the bottom of tower 1.9 to the top of tower 18, after have discharged the latter of the sulphate it contained. The pump 21 then comes into action and a similar circulation occurs in the tower 18, while a new supply of acid from the reservoir 25 is sucked by the pump 222 and brought to the top of the tower 19. The acid, partially neutralized, remains in circulation in tower 18, until it is almost completely neutralized by the nicotine continuously supplied by the steam.

The precise moment when it is necessary to empty the tower 18 of the acid-nicotine sulphate which it contained, to transfer the solution from the tower 19 to the tower 18 and to refill the tower 19, is determined analytically by assaying a sample taken. in tower 18.

The nicotine sulfate solution, almost neutral, is: poured, by the pump \? L, into the tank 29, comprising a stirrer 26. This solution is treated there with caustic soda coming from the tank 28 until complete neutralization . During this operation, the ventilator 27 is kept running to discharge into the atmosphere the noxious vapors which are given off. This neutralization releases the nicotine. This is separated from the ammoniacal waters which accompany it in the separating centrifuge 30. Nicotine, in fact, although soluble in water, is insoluble in concentrated saline solutions.

While these ammoniacal waters are removed through the outlet 31, the crude nicotine is brought into the double bottom distillation boiler 32 where it is distilled under reduced pressure by means of the pump 35 and the condenser 36. The pure nicotine is collected in the reservoirs 33 from where it is discharged by the valves 34. The nicotine thus produced is ready to be placed on the market or used chemically for the preparation of salts.
