Apparatus for generating infrared rays.
Modern technology tends to generalize the heating and various treatment processes by radiation. It has in fact been observed that, for example, heating by radiation makes it possible to obtain, at equal room temperature, greater comfort for humans than heating by convection. Some manufacturers have proposed the installation of tube bundles, traversed by hot water, in the ceilings of the premises to be heated. The results obtained by this type of heating are very satisfactory; however, the installation of these tube bundles can only be done in buildings under construction.
The subject of the invention is an infrared ray generator apparatus, comprising at least one electrically resistant wire, placed in a tubular envelope at least partially permeable to infrared rays.
This appliance may, when it constitutes a heating appliance, be installed in a room the construction of which has been completed. I1 is characterized by the fact that it comprises a reflector and means for varying, on the one hand, the position of the resistive wire relative to the reflector and, on the other hand, the position of the reflector and wire assembly resistant to the device supports.
The amlexed drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, two embodiments of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an exterior view of a first embodiment, constituting a heating apparatus, with parts seen in section.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a view of a second embodiment, constituting an apparatus for the treatment of fluids, with parts in section.
According to fig. 1 and 2 of the appended drawing, the apparatus comprises a tubular casing 1 made of a material at least partially permeable to infra-red rays, such as quartz for example, carried by its ends by two supports 2. This casing has, in section transverse, circular sections. Inside this envelope are arranged two elements 3 also made of a material at least partially permeable to infrared rays, such as quartz, of cylindrical shape and the ends of which are engaged in housings 4 arranged in discs 5 arranged inside the supports coaxially with the casing 1. These elements 3 each have a channel 6 through which a metal wire 7 has a high resistance to the passage of electric current.
The angular position of each disc 5 is fixed using a screw 8 engaged in the wall of the support 2. The ends of the resistive wires are connected to terminals 12 intended to be connected to an electrical energy network.
The envelope 1 has a metallization 9 on part of its periphery. The angular position of the casing is fixed using a spring latch comprising a piston 10 sliding into a radial perch 13 of the support 2 and subjected to the action of a spring 17 which bears on a plug 11.
The value of the electrical resistance offered by the wire resisting the passage of electric current is determined in such a way that when this resistance is energized, the resistant wire reaches a temperature of about 1000 to 1300 C and becomes incandescent, the major part of the heat radiation of this wire then being constituted by infrared rays whose wavelength is between 12,000 and 50,000 Angstroms. These rays easily pass through the quartz walls of the elements 3 and of the casing 1, as long as their thickness does not exceed 1.5 mm.
As the angular position of each disc 5 can be modified relative to the corresponding support 2, this without changing the angular position of the tubular casing i, it follows that the position of the resistance wire 7 can be varied with respect to to the metallized part 9 of the casing 1, which acts as a reflector. Thus, it is possible to vary the opening angle of the dihedron enveloping the reflected rays. By modifying the angular position of the casing 1 and the position of the resistant wire with respect to the casing, it is possible to orient the beam of infrared rays reflected by the metallized part 9 at the angle desired opening, and direct it to the place where you want to stand or the object to be heated.
Thus, there is a sensation of heat due to the infrared rays which strike the human body, even if the ambient temperature of the room is relatively low. Here we have a phenomenon similar to that observed by mountain people when they are in the sun on a glacier for example.
Such a heater can be fixed to the ceiling of a room, for example in the frame of a door, or on a mobile support. One of the great advantages of the heater described is due to the fact that it can easily be placed in existing rooms and that, given the very attractive exterior appearance of quartz, it can also constitute a decorative element.
In an alternative embodiment, one could obviously provide any number of elements 3 inside the envelope. In order to obtain the greatest possible variation in the opening angle of the reflected beam, it is advantageous to provide only one element 3, parallel to the axis of the tubular casing, but disposed eccentrically with respect to this latest.
It is obvious that the metallization 9 can be provided external or internal, but can also be replaced by a cylindrical, elliptical or parabolic metallic reflector.
It would also be possible to provide a tubular envelope, the cross section of which would have a part limited by an ellipse or a parabola, this part being able to be metallized in order to constitute a reflector.
In the form of execution shown in FIG. 3, the apparatus is more especially intended for the treatment of liquid or gaseous fluids contained in an enclosure. The envelope 1 has the general shape of a large test tube, the nix of its ends being closed. This casing contains two elements 3 whose resistive wires are connected in series; their two free ends being connected to terminals 12 fixed in a plug 16 closing the second end of the casing 1.
Part of the latter is metallized, as in the previous example, so as to constitute a reflector, and the cap 16 closing the end of the casing 1 can be placed in any angular position with respect to the latter. , so that the position of the resistive wire 7 with respect to the metallized part can be modified in order to obtain the desired angle of opening of the reflected beam. The envelope 1 is intended to pass through the wall of the enclosure containing the liquid or the gas to be heated or treated. It is obvious that a tight seal must be provided at the place where this envelope I passes through the wall of the enclosure. Thus, the part of the envelope containing the infrared ray source emerges inside the enclosure, while its end carrying the terminals emerges outside of the latter.
When the resistive wire is energized, the infrared rays heat the fluid by radiation and thus create a circulation of the liquid. Such a treatment apparatus is, for example, very advantageous for reheating wines, in order to induce and maintain their malolactic fermentation.
In fact, such a treatment apparatus is extremely rational and economical, because, on the one hand, by fixing it in the lower part of the tank, the heating automatically creates a circulation of the fluid which successively brings all the parts of it. ci near the treatment apparatus, so that after a more or less long time, the mass of the fluid is irradiated and, on the other hand, as described above, the casing of the treatment apparatus may not have any external metal part on it, so that, in the case of beverage treatments, for example, to which contact with metal parts gives an unpleasant taste,
no such risk is to be feared. Finally, the device acts by radiation, there is no risk of local overheating which could give a drink a cooked taste that it is practically impossible to eliminate.
This treatment device can obviously be fitted with a source of ultraviolet rays which, in the case of wine treatment, on the other hand, prevents the invasion of the wine by pathogenic bacteria whose action is always harmful to the quality of the wine. wine and, on the other hand, increases the vital factor of wine and therefore its qualities.
The apparatus described with reference to FIG. 3 can be used with advantage to treat a quantity of drinks, either in order to increase the vital factor thereof by irradiation, or in order to cause by heating the start of a fermentation or other process.
