Zusatzpatent zum. Hauptpatent Nr. 258132.
Additional patent for. Main Patent No. 258132. Electric gas discharge lamp and method for making the same. The present invention relates to an electric gas discharge lamp with a tubular glass envelope which contains an ionizable gas and electrodes, and which is provided with a strip-shaped, conductive coating which forms a tempering strip that facilitates the start of the discharge in the lamp, and a method for manufacturing such a lamp.
This invention represents an improvement of the lamp marked in claim I of the main patent and the method marked in claim II of the main patent.
The lamp according to the invention, which is designed in accordance with patent claim I of the main patent, is characterized in that the tempering strip consists of a compound containing a binder and a carrier, the melting temperature of the binder being below the manufacturing temperature of the gas discharge lamp, and wherein the carrier means has evenly distributed metal particles and has a melting temperature which is so high above that of the binder that it does not melt during the manufacture of the gas discharge lamp.
An embodiment of the lamp according to the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, which shows a side crack of the lamp, partly in section. 1 is an electric lamp which has an elongated, cylindrical shell 2, in the ends of which the power supply wires 3, 4 and 5, 6 are fused, which are each connected to the electrodes, e.g. B. glow electrodes, 7 and 8 are electrically connected. The lamp bases 9 and 10 each have a pair of contact terminals 11, 12 and 13, 14, with which the power supply wires 3, 4 and 5, 6 are connected.
The glow electrodes 7 and 8 each consist of a spiral, preferably of tungsten wire activated with the usual mixture of barium and strontium oxide. The shell 2 contains an ionizable medium. This ionizable medium can be a noble gas such. B. krypton, neon, argon or a mixture thereof, be under a pressure of a few millimeters Hg and have a small amount of mercury, the latter being a low pressure during operation of the lamp, e.g.
B. 10 microns, be seated. * An excess amount of mercury, which ver evaporates during operation of the lamp, is represented by the drop 15 within the envelope. The lamp 1 is a low-pressure fluorescent lamp. The inner surface of its envelope is provided with a suitable fluorescent material which is excited to fluoresce under the action of the electrical discharge in the envelope.
On the outer surface of the shell 2, in direct connection with the electrode 7 and ending in the immediate vicinity of the opposite end of this shell, a tempering strip 16 made of an electrically conductive material is arranged, which has constituent parts that adhere to the glass and at temperatures above and remain porous below the melting point of the glass. After heat treatment at a temperature above the melting point of the glass, this material represents a porous film adhering to the shell, which has metallic, evenly distributed particles.
This material consists of an electrically conductive additive, a binder which melts below the temperature to which the gas discharge lamp is subjected during its manufacture, and a carrier substance whose melting temperature is above that of the binder and which has the desired porosity of the mate rials after application to the lamp envelope guaranteed.
The tempering strip can be arranged both inside and outside the glass bulb, and means can be provided to connect this tempering strip to both electrodes. If desired, the tempering strip can also extend over the length of the lamp and end in the immediate vicinity of the ends of the lamp without being connected to one of the electrodes.
As a result of its composition, the tempering strip described has better electrical conduction properties and better resistance to mechanical wear than the one described in the main patent. The final state of the material after application to the envelope is determined by the carrier means, e.g. B. beryllium oxide, clay, aluminum oxide or similar substances, determines which creates the desired porosity and ensures the desired electrical conductivity.
The desired results are obtained using a material that has ingredients that, as soon as they are mixed in the correct proportions and applied to the glass envelope, adhere to the glass and remain porous at temperatures above and below the glass melting point. For example, the electrically conductive mass can be a paste consisting of 1050 g of silver oxide, 600 cm3 of methyl alcohol as a diluent, 840 em3 of glycerine as a reducing agent, 450 g of lead borate and an addition of 15% by weight of beryllium oxide.
Berylium oxide is used as a non-melting, non-reactive material. It retains its porous structure at temperatures above and below the glass melting point. The lead borate, however, is melted onto the glass envelope as soon as the temper strip is heat-treated at a temperature below the glass melting point and, together with the beryllium oxide, forms a porous body in which the reduced metal oxide (silver oxide) is dispersed.
As soon as the temperature is raised above the glass melting point, the lead borate melts and forms a glassy, non-porous mass, after which the silver and lead borate are evenly dispersed in the beryllium oxide, which retains its porous structure at this increased temperature.
By mixing a non-melting, non-reactive material with an electrically conductive substance, an electrically conductive paste is obtained that can be subjected to temperatures above the glass melting point without the continuity of the tempering strip being disturbed. The Ohin resistance of this temper strip is usually 25 to 100 ohms.
This material can be applied to the glass envelope 2 both before and after the envelope is coated with the fluorescent layer. It can e.g. B. by brushing, spraying using a nozzle or using a rubber roller aufgetra conditions. The viscosity, thickness and adhesiveness of the material can be used for the various types of application by adding a suitable diluent, such as. B. methyl alcohol can be varied.
