Description

<B> Sorting machine controlled by recording cards. </B> The present invention relates to a sorting machine controlled by recording cards, in particular. a machine in which the cards are sorted by comparison of indi cations recorded on pairs of cards. In the known sorting machines for punched register cards, the sorting operation is sometimes carried out by placing and retaining a master card at a scanning position, then successively sending the secondary cards to be sent to a second scanning position. compared to the first. The master card and a card to be compared therewith are operated simultaneously by pins which do not feel through the perforations of the cards.

The indications explored, usually a combination of digits, are. automatically. transmitted to a comparison unit which determines the position to which the secondary map is to be taken after leaving the position at which it was scanned. Usually, a considerable number of secondary cards are compared to the main braid card, and this requires the passage of the exploration pins through the perfections of. the master card during each scan operation in which a card condaire is compared to it, the result being that the perforations of the master card tend, in the long run, to be damaged.

The sorting machine, object. of the invention, is. characterized in that it comprises a positive device for comparing indications, capable of being automatically actuated, provided with two columns of recording elements operating differentially, a mechanism comprising means intended to be actuated by hand, making. automatic control of the recording elements of one of said columns inoperative, and allowing manual control of these elements.

The appended drawing represents, by way of example, a partial embodiment of the machine according to the invention. Fig. 1 is a front view. Fig. 2 shows part of the machine shown in fig. l., with some of the elements occupying positions different from those indicated in fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view on a larger scale of part of the machine shown in FIG. 1.

Referring to this drawing, it can be seen that the embodiment shown comprises two plates 1 and 2 to which differential movements can be printed, to represent the figures to be recorded, as the result of an automatic operation deriving from the exploration. respective of a master card and a secondary card.

The automatic movement of the plates 1 and. 2 is carried out by means of fingers 3 and 4 which pivot on the plates 1 and 2. The fingers 3 and 4 are actuated by pins 5.

To each plate 1, respectively 2, correspond two brackets 6 pivoting at 7 on a frame 8, one arm of each bracket being articulated at 9 on the plate. The other arm of each square is pivotally connected, at 10, to a recording element 11 or 12, these elements being constituted by slides 11 and 12 animated by a vertical reciprocating movement.

Of course, the. The machine does not include only one pair of slides 11 and 12, but each of these slides is part of a column of slides arranged one behind the other. Each of the wings belonging to each of the two columns is. actuated by pins 5, fingers 3, plate 1, respec tively 2, and brackets 6. If, for example, a column has to work on six-digit numbers, six slides must be provided. For the sake of simplicity, we will refer here only to a pair of slides, since the operation of all the pairs of slides of a comparator will be the same.

Each set of fingers 3 and 4 is controlled by a latch 13 driven by a reciprocating movement, and capable of being actuated at each cycle of the machine by a bar 14 mounted on an oscillating shaft 15. The shaft 1.5 is set in motion by a mechanism not shown.

As shown in fig. 1, the slides constituting the recording elements are intended to function automatically under the control of the machine, but the smooth slides <B> 11 </B> of the left column (fig. 1) are associated with a mechanism by means of which their automatic operation can be interrupted, the slides can. then be ac ted to. hand in order to retain a given number in the comparator, while the slides 12 of the right column continue to be automatically controlled by exploration of secondary cards.

The means by which the wings 11 are. manually operated, at the same time as the automatic operation of these smooth necks is paralyzed, will now be described.

The operation of each slide 11 is effected by means of a control member 16 which has an oblique face 17. This control member 16, formed of a plate, is mounted between two other plates 18 and. 19. the lower edge of the member 16 sliding in grooves 20 formed in the plate 18 (see Fig. 3). An actuator 16u, by means of which the control member 16 is capable of being, moved to. the hand extends upwardly from the upper edge of said organ.

The operating part 16u passes through a slot 22 made in the pla that 19, this slot being of such a length as to allow it. the desired longitudinal movement of the control member. To prevent the lateral shift of the control member 16, and to prevent it leaving its guide groove 20 formed in the. plate 18, \ two small plates 21 are attached to it and slide against the underside of the. pla that 19.

A spring lock. 23 comprising. an upper <B> V </B> end is mounted on the control unit 16, and, is. capable of engaging in <B> V </B> notches formed on the underside of the plate 19. This lock 23 has a slot 25 and is capable of sliding longitudinally on (the guides formed by screws 26 fixed to the control member 1.6 The lower end of the worm 23 is in contact with a pivoting lever:) 7 which a spring 28 tends to bring closer to the. plate 19.

Thus, when the control unit 16 is. moved longitudinally below the. plate 19, the lock 23 engages in the successive notches 24, until the. desired position of the control member this lock engages in the notch which corresponds to this position.

A part 29 forming a sleeve surrounds the upper part of the slide 11 and. is secured thereto by means of a screw 30, this part 29 forming on the slide a stop capable of being engaged by the control member 16. The sleeve 29 has a notch 31 which allows. this sleeve to be adjusted when the machine is assembled, then after wear, to be adjusted so as to compensate for the wear. As the. fig. 3, plate 19 is. provided with ten notches 21, representing the respective control positions for the numbers 0 to 9, and the slide 11 can be controlled vertically to different positions which are a function of the. position of the control unit.

When the latter is at rest, it occupies the position shown in the fi, <, -. 1, to which it is held in position 0 by the latch 23. As indicated in fiy. 1, the slide 11 also then occupies its. position 0.

When the device is to be actuated automatically, the reciprocating latch 13 is, as indicated above, set in motion during each cycle of the machine, and.

it is therefore necessary to make this lock inoperative if the device is to be controlled by hand, in order to retain a determined number behind the scenes of the left column. To this end, a member (the blocking constituted by a bar 32 is movable at the same time as the lock 13, and a fitting 33 which cooperates with the bar 32 is pivotally mounted on a rod 34 fixed in the frame 8. The fitting 33 is pulled by a spring 35 towards the bar 32 but, when the control member 16 is at its.

position 0, as shown in fig. 1 and 3, a stud 36, which makes. laterally protruding on it, engages an ear 37 of the fitting 33, which retains the. fitting 33 out of engagement with the bar 32. The latter moves up and down at the same time as the lock 7.3 and, when the control member 16 is moved from its position 0 in the indicated direction by arrow A in fig. 3, the tenon 36 is released from the lug 37, so that, during the next downward movement of the worm 13, the spring 35 brings the fitting 33 to.

turn clockwise so as to bring its operating edge 38 into the path of bar 32, whereby the latch 13 is prevented from rising again. The latter is therefore rendered inoperative and, although during the following cycles the shaft 15 is put into oscillation, the lock will remain inoperative. As a result, the number which has been recorded by hand, in the wings 11 of the left column, will be kept until the corresponding actuators are returned to their 0 position.

During the movement of the controls 16 up to this -, rest position, each tenon 36 releases the lock 33 of the corresponding bar 32, which causes the release of the lock, which is. then made operational again.

The master number thus composed by hand behind the scenes of the left column, or means of the organs 16 moved by hand, is. compared with the successive numbers dialed behind the scenes of the. right column as the result of exploration operations performed on secondary maps.

It is therefore understood that the machine described can operate automatically in the normal way or, if secondary cards are to be compared to. the same master number, this master number can be composed at the. hand, in the smooth necks of the left column, and retained in them, which eliminates the need to use a trump card.
