Additional patent subordinate to main patent N 280356. Suspension device of the rear wheel of a motorcycle. The main patent relates to a positive suspension device for the rear wheel of a motorcycle, which is characterized by a fork comprising two arms and means allowing said wheel to be fixed to these arms, the end of this fork, opposite to the arm, being hinged to an extending part.
down the frame of the motorcycle, by a pair of shock absorbers each comprising an outer member and an inner member coaxial and capable of moving axially with respect to one another, one of the members of each shock absorber being articulated to said frame, below the point of articulation of said fork, and the other being articulated in the vicinity of one of the ends of said fork which carry said wheel, the whole being arranged in such a way that this device is movable along an arc of a circle contained in the plane of symmetry of the frame.
When a passenger is provided on a motorcycle, the load increases on the rear wheel and the load distribution is changed compared to the load distribution without a passenger.
The present invention relates to a positive device for suspending the rear wheel of a motoeyelette and its object is to provide a positive device which can be adjusted according to the. value and burden sharing, which was. not possible with the device covered by the main patent.
The suspension device which is the object of the present invention has a fork comprising. two arms and means for fixing said wheel to these arms, the end of this fork opposite the arms being. hinged to a downwardly extending portion of the motorcycle frame, a pair of shock absorbers each comprising an outer member and a coaxial inner shaft, capable of moving axially relative to one another, a members of each shock absorber being articulated in the vicinity of one of the ends of said fork which carry said wheel,
and movable along an arc of a circle contained in a plane at least substantially parallel to the plane of symmetry of the motorcycle. This device is. characterized in that it has an actuating mechanism capable of pivoting on the frame, arranged and shaped so as to be able to put the ends of each of the other members of each shock absorber in one or the other of two positions located below the place of ar tieulation of said fork and in such a way the angle between said fork and said shock absorbers can be modified.
Said actuating mechanism preferably comprises a plate having a groove formed therein and in which is engaged a pin carrying the dampers; further, preferably also, the whole is arranged such that a rotation of said plate moves the axis inside a groove formed in said frame part, from one of said positions to the other or vice versa.
Preferably, said plate is provided with a groove comprising a section intended to move said axis and guide parts arranged at each end of said section and making it possible to move said axis away from this section to prevent it from moving in. the groove formed in said part of the frame.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, two embodiments of the device according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a first embodiment adjusted to withstand the load of the motorcyclist alone.
Fig. 2 also shows in side elevation this same embodiment in the position it takes to support the weight of the motorcyclist and a passenger.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on a larger scale taken through line 3-3 of FIG. 1. FIG. 4 is a side elevational view of a second embodiment.
In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 to 3, we see an axis 3 connecting a pair of shock absorbers 1 to a frame element 2 in the form of a channel, this axis 3 passing through grooves 4 formed in a pair of plates 5 each supporting a footrest 7 fixed on it. The plates 5 can be moved by means of the foot-rests 7 and they then move the axis 3 in a groove 6, as will be described below.
The plates 5 are each pivoted on each side of the frame member 2 by means of a common pivot 8 on which they are. rigged. The pivot 8 rotates freely in sockets 2a fixed to the frame member. Each plate 5 is provided with two arms 9 and 10, the arm 9 carrying the footrest 7 and the arm 10 having a groove 4. Each groove 4 comprises an arcuate section 4c intended to move the axis 3 in the groove 6 , a guide part 4a forming an acute angle with the upper end of the section 4c, the radius of the arcuate part 4a having as its center the pivot 8, and a guide part 4b forming an obtuse angle with the other end of the section 4c and also having pivot 8 as a center.
The guide parts 4a and 4b serve to guide the axis 3 and to move it away from one end or the other of the part 4c, as will be described. further.
A pair of shock absorbers is mounted on pivots 11, one on each arm of the fork 12 which supports the rear wheel 13. Each shock absorber 1 comprises an inner member 1a and an outer member 1b, coaxial, movable relative to each other. to the other axially and arranged so as to compress at least one rubber element mounted on the inner member, whether the damper is extended or contracted. The member 1a is movable along an arc of a circle contained in a plane at least substantially parallel to the plane of symmetry of the. motorcycle.
The other end of each shock absorber is mounted on the axis 3 (see fig. 3 which is provided with bushes 14 each comprising a pair of parallel sides which can slide in one of the grooves 6 formed on each side of the channel-shaped frame element 2. Each bushing abuts against a shoulder 15 formed on the axis 3. Collars 16 are provided on the axis 3; they are adjacent to each bushing 14 and rest on the surface. of the frame element 2, these collars serving to prevent tilting of the axle 3 during adjustment with the resulting jamming of said axle in the groove 6. The collars 16 are retained in position by means of lock nuts 17.
The operation of the suspension device described is as follows. If it is desired to modify the setting of the suspension device to pass from a position such as that shown in FIG. i and corresponding to that of the motorcyclist alone, in the position shown in FIG. 2 which are suitable in the case with passenger, the footrests 7 are grasped by the hand and turned in the direction of the arrow shown in fig. 1; it follows that the plates 5 move relative to the axis 3.
This axis 3 slides along part 4a of grooves 4 until it comes to the junction of part 4a with section 4c. The weight of the shock absorbers then causes the movement of the axis 3 which engages in the sections 4c of said grooves. The plate 5 is then turned in a direction opposite to that represented by the arrow in FIG. 1, so that the axis is moved by the section 4c of each of the grooves 4, the axis 3 and the bushes 14 being lowered in the groove 6 until they take position at the bottom of said groove 6. By continuing to rotate the plates 5, they move relative to the axis 3 so that this axis engages in the part 4b of each groove, which allows it to be blocked at bottom of groove 6.
The shock absorber is thus adjusted and fixed in a position (FIG. 2) determined with respect to the fork element 12 for which the suspension device is capable of supporting a passenger.
To return the shock absorber to its initial position, the operations are carried out in reverse, the parts 4a of the grooves 4 serving to block the axis 3 in its upper position in the groove 6 (see fig. 1).
In the second embodiment which is shown in FIG. 4, the position of an axis 3 and a pair of shock absorbers 1 attached thereto is adjusted by means of a pair of L-shaped levers 14, each lever being attached at one end to an axis 16 pivoted on a frame member 15 extending horizontally. A footrest 7 is fixed to the end of each lever remote from the axis 16. A groove 7 7 is provided in each of the levers 14 to receive the axis 3 sliding in the groove 6 when this axis is moved d 'one position to another along said groove 6.
Each end of the axis 3 is threaded and provided with a clamping nut (not shown) serving to retain the axis 3 and, therefore, the shock absorbers 1 in the upper or lower position. The operation of this embodiment is as follows. The solid lines in FIG. 4 show. the levers 14 in the form of L and the shock absorbers: I. when adjusted to support the weight of a passenger. In this position, the passenger's feet rest on the footrests 7 and thus force the pin 3 into its lower position in the groove 6.
When it is desired to adjust the suspension device for the case where it only supports the motorcyclist, the locking nuts are. loosened and lever 14 is. put in the position (shown in phantom in fig. 4) in which axis 3 is. brought to the upper end of the groove 6. This is done by rotating the lever 14 in the direction of the arrow shown in FIG. 4; the result is that the axis 3 slides in the groove 6 to move towards its upper position. The locking nuts are then tightened so as to retain the levers 14 and the shock absorbers 1 in position.
