Description

Process for manufacturing a phosphate fertilizer. The agronomic and market value of a phosphate fertilizer is all the higher the greater the fraction of the phos phoric acid contained in the fertilizer is soluble in ammonium citrate.

On the other hand, the presence of water soluble phosphoric acid is detrimental. stability of the fertilizer during storage. We are. therefore brought to neutralize as completely as possible the phosphate fertilizers, so as to eliminate all the phosphoric acid soluble in water.

The processes ordinarily used do not allow the two preceding conditions to be simultaneously satisfied.

In fact, if a rock phosphate is attacked with a mineral acid and if, to the product of this attack, a neutralizing agent such as lime, calcium carbonate or ammonia is added, the formation is observed. of a certain quantity of phosphoric acid insoluble in ammonium citrate before the total disappearance of the water soluble phosphoric acid. The fertilizer obtained by current processes contains. therefore either phosphoric acid soluble in water, in which case this fertilizer is unstable, or phosphoric acid insoluble in ammonium citrate, so that its market value is. low.

The invention makes it possible to remedy these disadvantages. Its object is a process. for the manufacture of a phosphate fertilizer by attacking a natural phosphate with a mineral acid, such as for example nitric acid, and adding a neutralizing agent to the product of the attack, characterized in that introduced into the mass, before the addition of the neutralizing agent, an aluminum compound in a proportion corresponding to at least 20 atoms / grams of aluminum per 100 molecules of total phosphoric acid.

It has in fact been observed that if one operates in this way, the calcium phosphate which precipitates is entirely soluble in ammonium trate and remains soluble in this reagent whatever the temperature at which is carried out. drying and regardless of the storage time.

Tests were carried out using different aluminum compounds, natural or not (silicate, silico-aluminate, phosphate, oxide, sulphate, nitrate, etc.) and in all cases identical effects were observed for the same proportion of aluminum ions introduced.

The proportion indicated above, of 20 atoms / gram of aluminum per 100 molecules of P205 is a minimum, since below this proportion phosphoric acid insoluble in ammonium citrate is produced. On the other hand, a higher proportion of aluminum than that indicated above is not harmful, but offers no advantage. The attack mass, added to the quantity of aluminum ions which has just been specified, can be treated with a large excess of neutralizing agent without the formation of phosphoric acid insoluble in ammonium citrate. . At the end of the operation, the mass is clearly alkaline and the pH can reach the value 10.

For such a pH, if we had. No aluminum ions were added, all the phos phoric acid contained in the mass would have become insoluble in the ammonium citrate.

The method according to the invention is applicable to the. manufacture of simple calcium phosphate fertilizers as well as that of complex fertilizers containing, in addition to calcium phosphates, other fertilizing principles.

After having introduced into the attack mass only the quantity of aluminum ions specified above, then ammonia in an amount corresponding to the nitric acid used for the attack, sulfuric acid can be added in order to fix lime in the form of calcium sulfate, stable body and not greedy for water.

We can also. have recourse to, phosphoric acid to fix lime by transforming calcium nitrate into calcium phosphate.

Carbon dioxide can also be used with advantage to fix lime, but it is also necessary to add to the mass a quantity of sulfuric ions stoeehiometrically equivalent to the quantity of aluminum ions introduced.

This addition of sulfuric ions can be done either. in the form of sulfuric acid, either. in the form of a sulfate like gypsum which exists in abundance in nature.

The addition of aluminum ions and sulfuric ions can be done all at once by using aluminum sulphate or alum.

   Example I: 1000 kg of natural phosphate from Morocco titrating 34.2% of P - 05 pa.r 1.450 m # of hydrochloric acid of density 1.16 are treated.
