Description

Method for spraying a liquid and apparatus for. the implementation of the method.

The present invention comprises a method for spraying a liquid using a gas stream, especially a solution, emulsion or suspension. In the known methods, the spraying is often carried out by causing the formation of a film on a rotating element, for example a disc or a rotating bowl, on which the liquid is made to arrive on or in the vicinity of the axis of rotation and the liquid flows out onto the rotating element as a film and, after leaving the element, it is taken up by a stream of gas which divides the film or filaments of liquid into fine drops. The friction between the rotating element and the liquid generates in this device the force necessary to accelerate the movement of the liquid towards the periphery, thus reducing the thickness of the film as it approaches. from the periphery.

This reduction in thickness is again due to the fact that during the movement outside the liquid the extent of the surface of the disc or of the bowl covered by a given quantity of liquid increases, being directly proportional to the radius along which is effected. the movement of the liquid.

If instead of making the liquid arrive on a rotating disc, it is made to arrive on a stationary circular disc in the center or in the vicinity of the center so as to make it acquire at this point a certain radial speed, and if friction does not play any role , the liquid would retain its velocity up to the periode and the thickness of the film would decrease from inside to outside in inverse proportion to the radius. But the friction which occurs between the disc and the liquid decreases its speed and, consequently, its radial speed at the periphery of the disc is less and the thickness of the film is greater, so that it is difficult to remove. dividing the liquid from the disc by a stream of gas into drops as small in diameter as that required in various applications.

In order for the liquid moving on the disc to maintain a certain speed and therefore to distribute itself evenly over the periphery of the disc, it is necessary that the diameter of the disc be small, but the result, on the other hand, is that the film maintains a greater thickness. than that which is suitable for the formation of fine drops.

The present invention is based on the fact that it is necessary to allow the film coming from the stationary disc to thin further by allowing the liquid to continue its radial movement after leaving the disc. The liquid is then no longer slowed down during this movement by the friction on the disc, but only by the much lower friction between the liquid and the gas through which it passes. The liquid therefore retains substantially the radial velocity at which it left the disc and, as a result, the film thickness continues to decrease in inverse proportion to the radius measured from the center of the disc.

But to achieve this result, it is necessary to prevent the gas which is to divide the liquid into drops from meeting the liquid as soon as it leaves the disc; it should not meet the film before it has acquired the thickness which is suitable for the formation of drops of the size desired.

The method according to the invention is characterized in that the liquid is projected onto a fixed disc at least near its center, so that it flows in the form of a continuous film towards the outside, beyond from the periphery of the disc in an area protected from the stream of atomizing gas, the liquid beyond this area coming into contact with said stream of gas and being entrained by the latter.

The present invention also comprises an apparatus for carrying out this method, characterized in that it comprises a supply duct intended to distribute liquid at least near the center of a disc, beyond the periphery. of which the liquid thus distributed can flow freely towards the outside in the form of a continuous film, and a screen located at a short distance from the disc and intended to create immediately beyond said periphery an area where the film of liquid is protected from spray gas stream.

The appended drawing represents, by way of example, two embodiments of the apparatus which the invention comprises.

Fig. 1 is a schematic sectional view of the first embodiment.

Fig. 2 is an analogous cop of the second-form of execution.

In the first embodiment of the apparatus shown in FIG. 1, the liquid arrives at the center of a circular disc 1, through a pipe 2, which ends just in front of the disc. If the velocity of the liquid exiting through pipe 2 is sufficient, but not too great, it passes more uniformly in the form of a film on the disc to its periphery.

When the film reaches the periphery of the disc, it continues to move in the same direction and, under favorable conditions, retains its cohesion.

The gas stream whose function is to divide the liquid into drops arrives from the left side in the figure, in the direction of the arrows 5. A disc 3, of larger diameter than the disc 1, is mounted in front of this disc and at a certain distance from it, so as to form a screen and create an area where the film of liquid is protected from the stream of atomizing gas which does not meet the disc 1 nor does it reach its immediate vicinity. As a result, the liquid film does not divide under the action of the gas stream until it has reached a point 4, where it divides into fine drops carried by the gas stream.

In the second embodiment shown in FIG. 2, the liquid inlet pipe is arranged so as to open into the face of a disc 1, while opposite this orifice is a fixed disc 6, which serves to distribute the liquid stream in the manner of disc 1 of the first embodiment. This disc 6 is part of an aerodynamically shaped element, another part of which constitutes a screen 3 playing the same role as the disc 3 of FIG. 1. These discs 1 and 6 define a narrow zone through which the liquid flows outwards.

In the particular embodiment of the apparatus of FIG. 1, the diameter of the orifice of the pipe 2 is about 5 mm, that of the disc 1 about: 10 mm and that of the disc 3 is 40 mm, while the distance between the two discs is about 5 mm. A liquid of the nature of diesel was sprayed by this apparatus with a flow rate of 500 liters per hour with air at a speed of 100 km / h, and a satisfactory spraying was obtained in drops with a size of 150 at 200 microns.

It can be said in general that in an apparatus such as that of FIG. l, the diameter of disc 1 should be 1.5-2.5 times - the diameter of the orifice of pipe 2, the diameter of disc 3 should be greater than that of disc 1 by 2-6 cm, and the distance between the two discs can vary between a few millimeters and a few centimeters. The diameter of the disc 3 is 3 to 7 times the diameter of the distributor disc.

This device is suitable for many applications, for example in the spraying of liquid biocides, of liquid fuels (installations consuming liquid fuel and internal combustion engines) of solutions, emulsions or suspensions to be concentrated or to be dried by evaporation, etc.

It is often necessary to form the required gas stream by a separate fan or the like blower, but it can also be operated in a still atmosphere in which the sprayer is in motion. This principle applies to the case of biocidal liquids sprayed by an airplane. It suffices to equip the aircraft with several sprayers, for example 10 to 20, uniformly distributed over the width of the aircraft, the movement of which causes the passage of air relative to the sprayers.

In this case, the liquid may be sprayed onto a disc mounted on the aircraft, this liquid flowing outward in the form of a continuous film beyond the periphery of the disc and being protected from the eddy of the liquid. plane before it comes into contact with this eddy and is dragged by it.
