Process for concentrating dispersions and apparatus for carrying out this process.
Swiss Patent No. 300928 describes a process for concentrating dispersions by partially crystallizing the dispersant and removing the dispersant crystals, the dispersions being subjected to several freezing stages one after the other at increasingly lower temperatures, which process is characterized by the fact that the see crystals forming in the different freezing stages are carried along from stage to stage, let the crystals formed after the last freezing stage be separated from the concentrated dispersion and then fed back in the opposite direction through the various freezing stages,
they increase in size and at the same time are washed by the dispersions, the concentration of which decreases towards the first stage, and let the large crystals thus formed be removed after passing through the first stage.
The task can now also be solved by means of the method according to the present invention. The process according to the invention for concentrating dispersions by partial crystallization of the dispersant and removal of the dispersant crystals, the dispersion being successively subjected to several freezing stages at increasingly lower temperatures; is characterized in that after each successive freezing stage, at least the majority of the dispersant crystals formed are removed and the remaining liquid is then fed to the next freezing stage.
It is advisable to use the crystals formed in each freezing stage and deposited in the centrifuge to cool the coolant for the storage vessel.
It is also advisable to stir the mixture in the containers during each freezing period.
You can also work with the air switched off. The liquid flow is preferably regulated with the aid of valves which are controlled by a servomotor. This automates the whole process.
It is advantageous not to completely separate out the ice crystals during centrifugation in order to accelerate growth and the formation of new crystals in the subsequent freezing stage. However, it is also possible to remove the ice crystals completely and to inoculate them with ice crystals in each freezing stage before the start of the freezing period.
The temperature of the dispersion is advantageously set in each freezing stage in such a way that it corresponds to the coolant temperature in the previous stage.
1-3 of the drawing show an embodiment of the device according to the invention.
Fig. 1 shows the system in a schematic longitudinal section.
Fig. 2 shows the servo motor that controls the system.
3 shows the design of the drainage valves.
The apparatus shown in FIGS. 1-3 consists of a container 201 for a crude aqueous solution, which is kept at a temperature of about 1 ° C. by prior cooling with ice and by the circulation of ice water through the jacket 202.
The ice water is supplied through pipe 203 and discharged through pipe 204. The loading container is provided with a lid 205.
If so desired, the air can be withheld or other steps can be taken to protect the material from contamination. The ice water is supplied by the ice 206 melting in the container 207. The coolant is supplied to line 203 through coil 208, tube 209, valve 210, tube 211, pump 212, tube 214, valve 213, and tube 215. The drainage tap 216 is located at the bottom of the riser.
The container 201 for the raw material is provided with a discharge pipe 217 which is equipped with an electrically operated valve 218. Each of the electrically operated valves, including 218, is connected to the main switch 219 operated by the servo motor. The pipe 219a feeds the solution at a temperature of approximately 1 ° C. to the container 220, which is arranged in a freezing chamber 221. Said chamber 221 is isolated at 222 and is supplied with cooling brine. The other containers are of similar construction. The cooling system is not shown.
A stirrer is mounted in each container, which is provided with horizontal and vertical stirring rods 225, 226 and is driven on the shaft 224 by means of the cord pulley 223. In order to facilitate the transport of the ice crystals and to prevent the outlet from freezing up, the funnel 227 has no cooling and therefore has a relatively high temperature. The outlet pipe 228 is also not cooled and is provided with a valve 229, the construction of which can be seen in FIG. The valve 229 is operated by a rod mechanism from the solenoid 229a.
The propeller 220a preferably has an inclination angle of 18 and is driven by a shaft which is guided through the center of the hollow shaft of the wiper 220b, which keeps the walls of the container 220 free of ice.
The mentioned propeller 220a rotates clockwise at 600-900 revolutions per minute and pushes downwards, while the wiper 220b rotates at about 125 revolutions / min in the opposite direction.
The discharge line 230 and the associated discharge pipe 231 to the centrifuge 232 are insulated. The centrifuge works continuously, since a container is always emptied into the centrifuge. The ice crystals are emptied into the container 207 through the outlet 233. The ice-free, partially dehydrated solution is fed from the centrifuge 232 through pipe 234, pump 235, pipe 236, valve 237 and pipe 238 to the container 239.
Usually some ice is intentionally transferred into container 239 with the incoming solution. If no ice is carried, it is often advisable to inoculate the solution with ice crystals, which promotes the rapid formation of ice crystals.
The solution flows from container 239 through valve 240, pipe 241 to receiver 230 and from there, as already described, is passed through centrifuge 232 and from there through valve 243 and pipe 242 to third container 244. The solution is passed through valve 245 and Pipe 246 passed to template 230 again. After centrifugation, the solution flows through valve 247 and tube 248 to container 249. From the container mentioned, the concentrated solution passes through valve 251 and tube 250 to receiver 230.
After centrifugation, the solution flows through valve 252 and tube 253 to the last container 254 and from there, after passing through valve 255, tube 256 and centrifuge 232, in concentrated form through valve 257 and tube 258 to the packaging point.
It has been found that it is advantageous to carry out the successive stages with relatively small temperature reductions, such as 2 to 4 C, for example.
Furthermore, the temperature of the liquid in the second stage should be approximately the same as the coolant temperature in the first stage, and so on.
If one avoids extreme temperatures, allows them to freeze very quickly, allows the temperature to drop in a suitable manner from step to step, keeps the difference between the temperature of the coolant and the intended freezing temperature low and keeps the solution in constant motion during the freezing process, in this way an even formation of small ice crystals is guaranteed, and it can. rapid drainage of the solution can be achieved without removing constituents other than water.
The lowest temperature of the solution in the individual stages or the coolant temperature can be selected as follows, for example: 1st stage: -5 or -8; 2nd stage: -8 or -10, 5; 3rd stage: -10.5 or -13.5; 4th and last level: -13, 5 or
-19.
In order to make the cooling economical, the first two stages are usually connected to one compressor and the remaining stages to another compressor.
The entire system is preferably controlled automatically by the servo motor.
