Description

       Les    deux rails 12 sont montés oscillants  par leurs extrémités supérieures sur les pla  ques de guidage 10, et ils sont     munis    à leurs  extrémités inférieures de doigts     1.2a    qui se dé  placent dans des fentes curvilignes 10a dé  coupées     dans    les plaques 10, de façon à per  mettre' un mouvement d'oscillation limité des       rails.    Des ressorts 10b, fixés     aux    extrémités  saillantes des doigts     12a,    servent à faire oscil  ler les rails 12 dans la direction de la roue 11  et les maintiennent     concentriques    à cette der  nière;

Mechanism of a composing machine. The present invention relates to a mechanism of a composing machine for handling dies comprising upper and lower protruding ears. The composing machines capable of being provided with such a mechanism are of the known type in which the matrices and the space bands in circulation are.

selectively joined to form the desired composition in an assembler under the control of a keyboard, after which the assembler is raised to come into the line transfer position, and the composed line is transferred from the assembler into a mold for casting with a character bar, after which an returns the matrices and space bands to their storage stores for later use.

In these machines, the dies fall by gravity on an inclined conveyor belt, animated in a continuous movement and which brings them to a star wheel which stacks them one by one in the elevator. Whatever the movement of this wheel is. not in any way synchro nized with the. speed of movement of the dies, it has always been observed that it is perfectly suitable for polishing certain known machines. However, with higher operating speeds adopted in some newer models, the star wheel has an increased tendency to throw dies arriving in different directions which do not coincide with the intended path.

On the other hand, if the speed of rotation of a star wheel is too low, the linear speed of the points of the latter becomes smaller than that of the arriving dies and sometimes causes the blocking and the transposition of the dies, without talk about the resulting slowdown in composition.

The mechanism according to the present invention is of the type comprising an assembler in which the dies are composed in lines, an inclined conveyor belt for bringing the dies into the assembler, and a main guide passage leading from the exit end of the assembly. the belt to the assembler, this mechanism being characterized in that it comprises an additional guide passage arranged to receive the ma trices from the main guide passage and direct them towards the assembler.

The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the mechanism which is the subject of the invention.

Fig. 1 is a partial front view of a composing machine comprising said embodiment of the mechanism.

Fig. 2 is a partial view, on a larger scale, of FIG. 1.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of part of FIG. 1.

The embodiment of the mechanism shown in the drawing is part of a composing machine in which X dies are released from their magazine (not shown) under the action of a keyboard and fall gradually between guides. 1 in a vertical entry 2 of a. assembler on an inclined conveyor belt 3 constantly in motion, and which deposits them, one after the other and in the order of their release, in a main corridor which they follow in their path towards an assembly elevator 7. Here the dies are composed in line with space bands, after which the line is passed to the casting mechanism.

During the com position, the line is supported by a line stop finger 8, carried by a slide 9 elastically biased and which is prevented from performing any retrograde movement by a brake 9a.

The X dies have upper and lower lugs x which are sensibly flush with the side of the dies and which form the base as the dies travel slowly through the main lane as they are directed towards the elevator.

However, in the case of certain types of dies in use, and for reasons well known in the art, some of the thicker dies are hollowed out or hollowed out, or in other words have their ears offset from their base. or on the following faces, the matrix X shown in FIG. 2 being of this type.

A base wall of the main corridor is formed by two parallel guide rails 5 which are arranged so as to come into contact with the protruding ears of the dies. These rails are separated by a groove which receives the body of the dies (fig. 2) and a paxoi 5a at the bottom of this groove is inclined downward with respect to a plane of displacement of the die.

The upper wall of the main guide passage is constituted by an elastic guide constituted by a spring finger 6 (usually known as the spring of the passage) which is intended to come into contact with the dies by their lateral faces and to maintain them. elastically in contact with the rails 5 during their passage in the corridor.

In known mechanisms, the bottom wall of the corridor is flat with a view to contact with the flat face of an edge of the dies. On leaving the corridor, the dies are guided along their opposite edges by two front and rear cover plates 10, in the known manner.

An additional guide passage, which the known mechanisms do not include, is intended to receive the dies from the main guide passage and directs them into the assembly. The bottom wall, or right wall, looking at the figures of the additional corridor, consists of a wheel 11, designed to be driven with a continuous rotational movement and mounted between the plates 10 on a shaft 13, while that the upper wall, or left wall, of this corridor is constituted by a pair of guide rails 12, arranged vertically at the entrance of the elevator.

The rails 12 are arranged to come into contact only with the lower ears of the moving dies, and they are spaced apart so as to allow the bodies of the dies to pass between them. The wheel 11 is likewise arranged to come into contact only with the lower lugs of the moving dies and for this purpose comprises two circular edges 11a separated by an annular groove 11b, which receives the hollowed out or hollowed out bodies of the dies.

The rotation of the wheel 11 takes place in the opposite direction to that of clockwise, as indicated by an arrow at la. fig. 2. As can be seen from this figure, the edges of the rails 12 which come into contact with the ears of the dies are circular, so as to match the shape of the flanges 11a of the wheel.

       The two rails 12 are mounted oscillating by their upper ends on the guide plates 10, and they are provided at their lower ends with fingers 1.2a which move in curvilinear slots 10a cut in the plates 10, so as to allow a limited oscillation movement of the rails. Springs 10b, fixed to the projecting ends of the fingers 12a, serve to oscillate the rails 12 in the direction of the wheel 11 and keep them concentric with the latter;

however, these springs allow the fle rails to move away from the wheel in order to take into account the difference in thickness of the ears of the dies of different dimensions, it being understood that the thickness of these ears varies slightly and that these variations are not not very important.

The elevator is constituted, in a known manner, by two support rails 16 on which the dies are supported by their lower ears. The elevator also has an additional pair of rails. support 15, on which the dies are supported by their upper ears. These additional rails comprise, at the entrance of the elevator, raised portions of short length 15a, intended to intercept dies by their upper ears when they enter the elevator, as will be described later.

Known spring loaded pawls 17 are used to hold the dies inside the elevator when it is lifted to bring the line into the casting position.

The operation of the mechanism described is as follows: When the dies leave the main guide passage, their lower ends enter the flared entrance of the additional guide passage (fig. 2), the edges 11a </ I > de.la wheel 11 driven by a continuous rotational movement and the concentric edges of the vertical rails 12 coming into contact with the dies only through their lower lugs. In the case of hollow dies, such as those shown, the body of the dies is received by the groove 11b formed in the wheel 11.

The body of the dies whose protruding ears are flush with their base or right face are received in the space between the guide rails 12. While the dies follow the additional guide corridor, partly under the action of the living force which they are animated and partly under the driving action of the wheel 11 which turns continuously, they are first straightened, then brought to swing on their lower lugs, which serve as a pivot, to enter the 'elevator with their upper ears facing forward,

the latter passing over the upper ends of the rails 12 and through an interval left between these rails and the spring finger 6 of the main guide passage (see the solid line in fig. 1 and the dotted line in fig. . 2). As the dies thus enter the elevator, their upper lugs come into contact with the raised end portions 15a of the support rails 15, so that the dies swing over these upper lugs, which act as a pivot for them. bring their lower ears into the elevator.

It can be noted from FIG. 2, that the second tilting of the dies occurs when the lower ends of the dies are under the lower ends of the guide rails 12.

The length of the raised portions 15a which create the necessary gap between the lower ears of the dies and the lower rails 16 of the elevator need not be greater than is necessary to support a few ma trices, which, as they advance in the line, fall from the raised portions 15a onto the main portions of the rails 15 to be supported by their upper ears, or onto the lower rails 16 to be supported by the lower ears.

Since the portions of the rails 12 which come into contact with the ears are concentric with the flange 11a of the wheel 11 and that the rails are resiliently held in this concentric position by the spring 10b, the wheel 11 frictionally drives the dies and 'takes them through the additional guide lane. As the wheel 11 is completely circular (and not in the form of a star), it does not constitute any obstacle to the passage of the dies and does not tend to project them out of the path they must follow.

In fact, the rails 12 in cooperation with the wheel 11 keep the dies under their complete control until the upper ears of the dies have been brought into contact with the raised portions 15a of the rails, inside the die. elevator.

The rails 12 have at their upper ends inclined surfaces 12b inclined downwards and which not only cooperate with the upper ears of the dies when they enter the elevator, but also serve by their contact with the upper ears of space bands to direct these in the elevator.

The space bands are kept in a special store (not shown) and fall by gravity along an exit corridor 18 (fig. 1), arranged above the rails 12. A pivoting buffer 19 is intended to dampen the flow. fall of the space bands and guide them towards and in the elevator during the composition of the line.

CLAIM Mechanism of a composing machine, for handling dies comprising upper and lower projecting lugs, of the type comprising an assembler in which the dies are composed in lines, an inclined conveyor belt to bring the dies into the assembler, and a main guide passage leading from the outlet end of the belt to the assembler, characterized in that it comprises an additional guide passage arranged to receive the dies from the main guide passage and direct them towards the 'assembler.
