Comme produits de départ pouvant être utilisés, on peut citer : des fractions tirées directement du pétrole et contenant une forte proportion d'hydrocarbures à molécule rami fiée ; les produits provenant d'isomérisation de paraffines présentant de façon prédominante une chaîne simple, à l'aide de chlorure d'alu minium ou par d'autres procédés d'isomérisa tion connus ; les produits obtenus par alcoyli-' sation d'oléfines avec des isoparaffines ;

Process for the production of aliphatic acids The present invention relates to the manufacture of aliphatic acids, in particular acetic acid.
If liquid phase paraffins are oxidized using oxygen at elevated temperature and pressure, the resulting product contains volatile non-acidic oxidation products, such as ketones and esters, lower aliphatic acids (acid formic and the following), and residues with a high boiling point, which remain after removal of the acids by distillation. These high-boiling residues are complex materials which have little direct use or which must be treated to convert them into usable substances.
It has been found that, during such an oxidation of paraffins of a given number of carbon atoms, paraffins having a single carbon chain give the highest proportion of residues, and that this proportion of the residue relative to to the acids produced is reduced by the presence of chains with side branches in the molecule.
This can be demonstrated by referring to the oxidation of pure hydrocarbons containing 6 carbon atoms, namely n-hexane and the two methyl-pentanes. These were oxidized under identical conditions with air, at 140-160o C, and under 14 kg / cm2 of pressure, until there was no longer complete absorption of oxygen. contained in the introduced air.
The products were then subjected to distillation to separate the following successive fractions: volatile non-acidic products, volatile aliphatic acids of 1 to 4 carbon atoms with water, and residues with a high boiling point. The quantities of residues obtained expressed in parts by weight per 100 parts of anhydrous acids of 1 to 4 carbon atoms recovered were as follows

It has been found that it is possible to obtain lower aliphatic acids by the oxidation of paraffinic hydrocarbons while obtaining in the oxidation products only a reduced proportion of high residue residues. boiling by choosing as the product to be oxidized a mixture of paraffinic hydrocarbons containing paraffins of six to eight carbon atoms in the molecule,
and such that at least 40% by weight of the 6-8 carbon paraffins of said product consist of branched chain paraffins having methyl substituents.
It has also been found that the use of a mixture with a wide boiling field, for example up to 1500 C, has the disadvantage that its oxidation in - a stainless steel apparatus causes significant corrosion of this steel, and further that such a mixture with a wide boiling field gives by oxidation a high proportion of residues. It has been found that these disadvantages are avoided by employing a mixture of paraffinic hydrocarbons with a boiling field not exceeding 100 C.
Based on these findings, the invention relates to a process for the production of aliphatic acids, according to which is oxidized in the liquid phase, with a gas comprising molecular oxygen, a mixture of paraffinic hydrocarbons of which at least 40 () / o by weight consists of paraffins of 6-8 carbon atoms, at least 40 () / o by weight of paraffins of 6-8 carbon atoms of said mixture consisting of paraffins having one or more methyl groups in non-terminal position of their chain, the upper boiling point of this mixture not exceeding 100 C.
Preferably, this mixture boils between about 15.1 and about 95 () C.
As starting materials which can be used, there may be mentioned: fractions obtained directly from petroleum and containing a high proportion of branched-molecule hydrocarbons; the products resulting from the isomerization of paraffins having predominantly a single chain, using aluminum chloride or by other known isomerization methods; products obtained by alkylation of olefins with isoparaffins;
or else the products obtained by hydrogenation of monoolefins formed by polymerization of lower olefins such as propylene and isobutene. In order to carry out the process with the maximum economy, it is of course necessary that the cost of the raw material is compensated by the advantageous properties thereof.
An example of such a raw material obtainable inexpensively commercially and suitable for carrying out the process according to the invention is the gasolene fraction taken directly from Middle East oil and which boils between 15 and 95 C.
Batch oxidation of this product at 150-160 ° C under conditions comparable to those of the oxidation of n-hexane, 2-methylpentane and 3-methylpentane described above, gave residues in a proportion of 26.4 parts by weight per 100 parts of anhydrous acids of 1 to 4 carbon atoms obtained.
By way of comparison, the oxidation of a fraction of the same origin but of higher higher boiling point, for example up to 150.1 C, caused notable corrosion of the stainless steel apparatus, which does not occur with the fraction boiling from 150 to 95 (1 C; moreover, this fraction boiling up to 150o C gave residues in a proportion of about 100 parts per 100 parts by weight of acids of 1 with 4 carbon atoms obtained.
As oxidation gas, any gas containing molecular oxygen can be used, in the form of air or of mixtures poorer or richer in oxygen than air; some of the molecular oxygen may, if desired, be in the form of ozone. The use of high pressures for the oxidation may be necessary to maintain the reagents in the liquid phase.
It is advantageous if the oxidation temperature is high enough to ensure an economically advantageous oxidation rate while producing only a small proportion of peroxide compounds; of course, it should not be high enough for excessive oxidation of the hydrocarbons or their primary oxidation products to carbon oxides and water to occur. Temperatures in the order of 130-200 ° C have been found suitable, although higher or lower temperatures can also be employed if desired.
Although it is possible to carry out the reaction in the presence of oxidation catalysts such as catalyst metals, it can be dispensed with if it is carried out under the preferred conditions. Likewise, substances such as hydrocarbon solvents, peroxides, initiators and the like can be added, if desired, but this is not necessary and can even adversely affect the economy of the process.
The oxidation can be carried out by furnaces or continuously. The reaction mixture is normally a homogeneous liquid at the operating temperature, but on cooling it separates into two layers of liquid. The upper - layer is formed mainly of untransformed hydrocarbons, while the lower layer contains most of the acidic products and water.
Therefore, it is advantageous to operate by continuously or intermittently removing part of the reaction mixture, in the form of a homogeneous liquid, to cool it to a temperature below 800 C, and preferably also close to room temperature as may be appropriate, to separate the liquid layers formed, return the entire upper layer to the reaction apparatus and discharge all or part of the lower layer as a final product. It is also advisable to replace the part of the product thus evacuated with fresh hydrocarbon, so as to maintain a constant volume of liquid in the reaction apparatus, thus carrying out this operation of the oxidation process continuously. .
The oxidation can be carried out in apparatus of various types, under the sole condition that the reaction mixture is maintained substantially in the liquid phase and that sufficient contact is ensured between the liquid reaction mixture and the oxidation gas. Thus the oxidation can be carried out in a pressure apparatus provided with a mechanical device for the agitation of the liquid and the dispersion of the gas therethrough.
This reaction apparatus can also be established in the form of a vertical tower with means for the introduction of the oxidation gas at the base of the tower or at various points of its height, in which case the necessary agitation can be produced. by the gas itself; in this case, it is advantageous that the introduced gas is mechanically subdivided to ensure a fine dispersion of it at the entry point and through the reaction zone. In still another way, the oxidation gas can be introduced into a liquid stream moving with great rapidity in a circulation device such as a coil, with forced circulation.
It is preferable to use for the construction of the reaction apparatus materials having a sufficient degree of resistance to organic acids, although the corrosive properties of the oxidation mixture are lower than those of the more strongly corrosive.
Thus, a stainless steel containing 18% chromium, 8.5% nickel and 0.6% titanium (Firth-Vickers FDP v) is a satisfactory material of construction, although some lower components of the mixture, such as formic acid, are in themselves corrosive towards this steel.
The following example is given to illustrate the process according to the invention. Example The oxidation device, in stainless steel, was fitted with an agitator, an air inlet in its bottom, a duct for the discharge of waste gases , connections for the introduction or removal of liquids, and means for measuring and controlling the temperature of the reaction. Means were provided for continuously removing part of the liquid product and passing it through a cooler to bring it to a separator, from which the lower layer could be removed as a product of the operation, and the upper layer, returned to the reaction vessel.
The latter was charged with 1.5 liters of a 150-950 ° C. distillation fraction of paraffins, derived from crude oil, and having an initial boiling point (ASTM) of 31.5 ° C., and a final boiling point (ASTM) of 96.50 C,

The temperature was raised to 160o C, and the pressure to 21.1 kg / cm2. - The air was first introduced at low speed for an induction period of about 30 minutes, after which it was increased. this feed rate at 8-10 liters / minute, and was maintained as long as there was virtually complete absorption of oxygen, at a temperature of 160,) C.
The liquid reaction mixture was circulated through the cooler and separator at a rate of about 0.6 liters / hour shortly after oxygen uptake had started; and as soon as an aqueous, acidic lower layer began to appear in the separator, it was continuously withdrawn as a product of the process and replaced by introducing fresh hydrocarbon into the reaction vessel in sufficient quantity to keep the volume of liquid in the system constant, at an average rate of 0.26 liters / hour.
The oxidation was continued for a total of 37 hours, after which the product was distilled to remove the constituents separately, in successive fractions, namely: non-acidic volatiles, lower aliphatic acids with water, and high-boiling residues. The aci fraction of the aliphatics, containing water, was subsequently dehydrated and the anhydrous acids were recovered therefrom in successive fractions.
The yields obtained, calculated on 100 parts of hydrocarbon consumed by oxidation or having been entrained out of the system by the gas leaving, were as follows
