Description

Device for fixing an electrical appliance to a wall For fixing electrical appliances, such as wall outlets and switches, a housing is generally provided in a wall, a frame being provided at the entrance to the housing and carrying two tabs to allow fixing of the body of the electrical device. The latter is then hidden by means of a cover plate, the center of which has an opening in which is housed a solidary disk of the apparatus. The frame or plate for the legs is generally fixed to a wooden box which is housed in the wall during the construction thereof.

It often happens that this plate is not parallel to the plane of the finished wall, so that the fixing of the electrical apparatus is difficult and often of poor presentation.

The two tabs carried by the plate generally have a hole or a slot enabling the body of the device to be fixed thereto by means of screws. However, the distance separating these two holes varies according to the constructors of the plate, as well as the level of said tabs with respect to the outer surface of the wall. Consequently, it is often difficult to replace an electrical device, for example a switch, from one manufacturer with that of another. The subject of the present invention is a device for fixing an electrical appliance tending to remedy these drawbacks.

This device is characterized in that it comprises at least one elastic member tending to apply the device against the wall and an element forming a cover for the device, this element being intended to take support against the wall, means making it possible to clamp the device and the element against one another against the action of the elastic member.

The appended drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, one embodiment and variants of the subject of the invention.

Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a built-in switch.

Fig. 2 is a section on 11-11 of FIG. 1.

Figs. 3 to 9 are partial sections of variants.

With reference to FIG. 1, a housing 1 is provided in a wall 2 and contains a wooden box 3. A fixing plate 4 is screwed onto the opening of this box 3 and has the shape of a frame having two tabs 5 and 6, in which slots are made to allow an electrical appliance to be fixed therein by means of screws.

A switch 7 is fixed to these lugs by two elastic members each constituted by a part 8 (fig. 2), one end of which has a shoulder 9 and a threaded bore allowing it to be fixed to one of the lugs by means of 'A screw 10. The other end of this part 8 is constituted by a blade 11 engaged in a slot 12 made in a bracket 13 which is secured to the body 7 of the switch in any way. A coil spring 14 is disposed between the shoulder 9 and the caliper 13 and tends to push the latter towards the lower end of the part 8. This end is for view of a stop 15 preventing the part 8 from be separated from the caliper 13.

We see in fig. 1 that the springs 14 tend to push the switch 7 towards the bottom of the housing 1.

A cover plate 16 is supported by its edge against the wall 2. It has a central opening 17, in which is housed a disc 18 intended to be fixed to the bracket 13 by two screws 19. The whole of the cover plate 16 and the disc 18 form a cover masking the housing 1 and the body of the switch 7. The pressure exerted by the springs 14 is therefore transmitted to the plate 16 by means of the bracket 13 and the disc 18, so that the latter is always parallel to the surface of the wall, even if the plate 4 is slightly at an angle to the latter, as shown in FIG. 1.

In addition, the position between the body 7 of the switch and the disc 18 can be determined with exactitude, so that the disc 18 is always well centered with respect to the button 20 of the switch control.

Thanks to the fact that the part 8 is engaged with play in a slot 12 of the caliper 13, its position relative to the caliper can vary within certain limits, which allows the switch to be mounted on different plates for which the distance between fixing brackets 5 and 6 may have different values.

In fig. 3, a part of the device for mounting the switch according to FIG. 1, in the case where the tabs 5 and 6 of the plate are at the same level as the edge itself of said plate. In fact, in the case of FIG. 1, the tabs 5 and 6 were offset from the edge of the plate 4 and were located slightly inside the housing 1.

In the variant shown in FIG. 4, the elastic member comprises a part 21, one end of which is intended to be fixed to one of the legs 6, its other end 22 extending behind the switch 7 and having a hole through which a screw 23 passes within reach . The latter is screwed into the body 7 of the apparatus. A spring 24 is housed between the end 22 and the head of the screw 23 and tends to pull the switch in the bottom of the housing 1. This mounting device is equivalent, in terms of its result, to that shown in fig. 1 and the variations in the center distance of the fixing lugs of the plate 4 can be compensated for by a slight pivoting of the part 21 around the screw 23, in a plane containing the latter.

Fig. 5 shows another variant, in which the elastic member is simply constituted by a spring 25, one end of which is fixed to the body of the apparatus by a screw 26 and a plate 27, its other end por being a part 28 having a bore threaded to allow its attachment to one of said tabs by means of a screw. The spring 25 is designed to work in compression.

Fig. 6 shows a variant which is very similar to the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 to 3. The part 8 has a rectangular section over its entire length and has a shoulder 9 at its upper part. This shoulder serves as a support for the spring 14. FIG. 7 is a cross section of part 8 just below the shoulder 9. This figure shows that the thickness of part 8 is just sufficient to provide a threaded bore for the screw 10. The lower end of the part 8 passes through a slot 12 provided in a plate 29, which is fixed to the base 7 by a screw 30 and which replaces the bracket 13 of FIG. 1.

The part 8 is flared at its base by the application of a few punches to form a stop for the part 29 and thus replace the stop 15 shown in -fig. 2.

Fig. 8 relates to a variant in which the fixing device comprises a part 8 similar to that shown in FIG. 6, the lower part of this part being secured in a slot of corresponding shape provided in a support 31 fixed to the base 7. An arm 32 is rigidly fixed to the upper part of the part 8. At the end of the arm 32 is articulated a rod 33 having a threaded ally for the screw 10, which allows its attachment to the support plate 4.

It can be seen that the differences in height of the legs 5 of the plate 4 are compensated for by the sliding of the part 8 in its support 31, while the differences in the distance between the two legs 5 of the plate 4 are compensated by a slight ro tation of the connecting rods 33 relative to the arm 32.

Fig. 9 shows a variant in which the connection between the base 7 of the electrical appliance and the lugs 5 of the fixing plate 4 is obtained by a block 34 of rubber or similar elastic material, in which are fixed threaded pieces 35 allowing the fixing of the block 34 by means of screws 10 and 36.

The different embodiments shown have yet another advantage that of being able to vary to a slight extent the position of the control button 20 of the switch relative to the disc 18 by incompletely screwing the screws 19 and acting separately on the switch. the tightening thereof.

It is understood that one could foresee many variant embodiments and that, for example, one could provide only one elastic member tending to apply the device in the bottom of the housing 1. In the case of fig. 4, the elastic member could be constituted by a leaf spring arranged on the rear face of the switch to which it would be fixed in its middle. The two ends of this blade would rest under the parts 21.

One could provide an embodiment of the device for fixing an electrical device on a wall having no housing. In this case, the elastic members of the device would thus tend to apply the electrical appliance against the wall, the element forming the device's cover, in this case constituted by a cap, bearing against the wall by its outer edge.

Finally, the various embodiments described, instead of being used for fixing switches, could be used for fixing other electrical devices, in particular sockets.
