Manometer
The present invention relates to a manometer comprising a pressure-sensitive member arranged inside a sealed housing and mechanically connected to an indicator index moving opposite a scale. This pressure gauge is characterized by a maximum index pivoted coaxially with the indicator index and subjected to the action of a braking device and by a member ensuring the drive, in one direction, of the maximum index by the indicator index, means being provided making it possible to bring the index to a maximum opposite the start of the scale.
The appended drawing illustrates schematically and by way of example an embodiment of the pressure gauge, object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an axial sectional view thereof.
Fig. 2 a plan view, some parts being broken away.
The manometer shown comprises a housing I provided with a window sealed off by a glass 2. This glass is clamped on a flexible and elastic seal 3 by means of a threaded ring 4. A split elastic ring 35 tends to hold the seal 3 in position and opposes, when tightening the ring 4 or when applying an external pressure on the glass, an expansion of the seal towards the inside of the housing which could cause a permanent deformation of the seal and therefore a reduction in the effectiveness of the seal.
An axe. 5 rotating in bearings 6 and 7 is mechanically connected to a pressure sensitive member 8 and carries an indicator 9 moving opposite a scale 10.
The pressure-sensitive member is formed by a Bourdon tube, one of the ends of which is rigidly fixed to the housing, opens into a chamber 11, in connection with the ambient pressure, through a bore 12, made in the wall of the housing. The other end of the tube
Bourdon is closed and carries an articulation pin 13 on which is articulated one of the ends of a connecting rod 14. The second end of this connecting rod is articulated at 15 on the shank 16 of a toothed sector 17 pivoted freely on a axis 18. A pinion 19 integral with the axis 5, meshes with the toothed sector 17.
On the outer face of the bearing 7 is pivoted a sleeve 20, having a flange 21, on which is rigidly fixed a maximum index 22. The end, opposite to the flange 21, of this sleeve forms a plate 23, held by the action of a spring 24, in rubbing contact with a gasket 25, integral with a support 26, rigidly fixed to the housing 1.
The indicator index 9 is arranged so as to drive the maximum index 22 in one direction from the position where the two indexes are superimposed. For this purpose, it is provided with a drive finger 27, capable of acting on the lateral edge 28 of the maximum index. Finally, the end of the latter carries a weight 29.
The operation of the manometer described is similar to that of known manometers. In fact, when the ambient pressure external to the housing 1 varies, the pressure inside the housing remains constant since this housing is absolutely sealed. As a result, the pressure inside the Bourdon tube is different from that in the housing. This pressure difference causes deformation of this tube which results in a displacement of its end carrying the rod 14. This displacement therefore causes an angular displacement of the indicator index 9, the amplitude of which is a function of the pressure difference.
The indicator index 9 drives the maximum index 22 in its movement by means of its finger 27 pressing against the lateral edge 28 of this maximum index. The braking device constituted by the plate 23 held elastically in contact with the lining 25, is arranged so as to oppose only a low resistance to the movement of the index at maximum, that is to say insufficient to introduce a troublesome error in the indications given by the indicator index, but sufficient to retain the index at maximum in its angular position when the indicator index returns to its starting position. In fact, the plate 23 moves with gentle friction relative to the lining 25.
Thus, the maximum index 22 always remains in the angular position corresponding to the maximum angular displacement undergone by the indicator index 9. It follows that a diver provided with such a pressure gauge can not only know, during the dive and at any time, the depth at which it is, but it can also reveal, after the dive, the depth reached. This is of great importance because, during dives of long durations and at great depth, accidents can occur due to the fact that nitrogen dissolves in the blood, which, during a too rapid ascent, can be the cause of serious accidents.
However, when a diver becomes unwell after a prolonged dive to great depth (for example 40 meters) the most effective way to avoid an embolism is to put the diver immediately in the previous conditions, that is to say - say to plunge it back to the depth to which it had descended, then to raise it gradually so as to allow the nitrogen to gradually escape from the blood. The manometer, object of the invention, makes it possible to know this diving depth and therefore to save the life of the diver.
To bring the index to maximum in its starting position, it suffices to give a few shocks to the case, on the side of it close to the starting angular position, that is to say at the start of the scale. Indeed, thanks to the inertia of the weight 29, each impact causes a relative angular displacement between the scale 10 and the index 22 bringing the latter closer to the start of this scale.
As a variant, the member ensuring the drive, in one direction, of the maximum index 22 for the indicator index 9 could be constituted by a stop carried by the maximum index on which the lateral edge 30 of the index indicator 9 would be likely to act.
In another embodiment, the braking device could also include a lining 25 in a flexible and elastic material clamped between the plate 23 and the support 26. In this case, it is possible to omit the spring 24.
In another variant, the maximum index could be made of a ferro-magnetic material and the weight 29 omitted. In this case, the maximum index can be brought back opposite the start of the scale by means of a magnet acting on this index through the glass 2.
