Description

Braking installation for an aircraft The present invention relates to a braking installation for an aircraft provided with brakes actuated by pressurized fluid and with a retractable landing gear, comprising means associated with the device controlling the camotage of the landing gear and arranged so as to apply the brakes automatically when the landing gear is retracted and to close a pipe supplying pressurized fluid to the brakes, placed under the control of the pilot, and means actuated by the rotation of the wheels during landing to open said pressurized fluid line and allow the pilot to apply the necessary braking pressure.

In Swiss patent No. 310129, a braking system has been described for an aircraft of the type specified above.

Although it is desirable that the wheels be automatically braked upon retraction of the landing gear after the aircraft has taken off, in order to prevent these wheels from rotating in the retracted position, it is not always desirable that said wheels be kept in the braked state during the flight of the aircraft, since it is undesirable that the brake actuating mechanisms, the conduits for the pressurized fluid and the like are kept under pressure consecutively for long periods.

The object of the present invention is therefore to provide a braking installation in which, when the landing gear is retracted, the brakes are automatically pressurized for a specific period of time only, this period being sufficient. to stop the rotational movement of the wheels after take-off of the aircraft.

The installation forming the subject of the invention is characterized in that it comprises means arranged so as to automatically release the brakes after a predetermined period of time following the retraction of the landing gear, in order to allow the rotation of the wheels during landing.

The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the braking installation forming the subject of the present invention.

Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a device for the automatic control of the braking pressure associated with a device for preventing the application of the brakes before the wheels of the landing gear rotate during landing.

Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a hydraulically actuated device and cooperating with the device of FIG. 1 and with the mechanism of FIG. 2, this device being shown in the position it occupies when the landing gear of the aircraft is in the landing position.

Fig. 4 is a diagram of the braking installation, the latter comprising the devices and the mechanism of FIGS. 1 to 3 and being shown in the state in which it is when the landing gear of the aircraft is in the retracted position.

Fig. 5 is an overall view of part of the installation and shows how it can be mounted on a landing gear of an aircraft.

The embodiment shown in the drawing comprises a device for the automatic control of the braking pressure which is associated with a device serving to prevent the application of the brakes of the wheels before the latter rotate during landing.

Fig. 1 shows a device for the automatic control of the braking pressure. This device comprises a cylindrical casing 1 arranged to be driven in rotation by a wheel of a landing gear and which is mounted on bearings 2 provided in a non-rotating support 3. It further comprises an annular member 4, in the form of a landing gear. drum, which is rotatably mounted inside the casing 1, a clutch mechanism 5 driving the drum member 4 from the casing 1 and an annular flywheel 6 which is also rotatably mounted on bearings 7, between the periphery of the member 4 and the inner periphery of the casing 1.

A cross member 8 extends diametrically across the inner periphery of the flywheel 6, in the median plane thereof and through slots in the form of a circular arc and diametrically opposed formed in the drum unit 4. The Angular displacement of the drum member 4 relative to the flywheel 6 is thus limited. A hole 10 is made on each side of the center of the crossbar 8 of the flywheel and in each of these holes is housed a ball 11 which rests inside a shallow notch 12, of cross-section in the form of- V, which extends across one of the faces of a member 13 serving as a cam which cooperates with the drum member 4 of which it is integral in rotation.

A disc 14 is arranged on the other side of the cross member 8 and one end of an actuating rod 15 loaded by a spring abuts against this disc. A valve beam 16 (see fig. 2) connected to said actuating rod 15 is housed in a pressure chamber 17 which communicates with the hydraulically actuated brakes, and intake 18 and exhaust valves 19 communicate with the valve. pressure chamber 17 and are connected to the valve beam 16, the inlet valve 18 also communicating with a source of pressurized fluid, and the exhaust valve 19 communicating with a reservoir for the fluid.

The actuating rod 15 is spring biased to a position in which the inlet valve 18 is open and the outlet valve 19 is closed, so that pressurized fluid can flow up to 'inside the pressure chamber 17, and thence into the brakes. If the wheel of the wise landing gear were to slip or skid, however, the casing 1 would be decelerated as a result and there would be an angular displacement of the flywheel 6 relative to the drum member 4. This displacement would oblige the balls 11 of the crossmember 8 of the flywheel to rise along the inclined sides of the notch 12 of the member 13 serving as a cam, so that the disc 14 and the actuating rod 15 would thus be displaced and separated from the tra verse 8.

The movement in this direction of the actuating rod has first the effect of closing the intake valve 18, then opening the exhaust valve 19, so as to release the brake pressure, so that the wheel is thus prevented from continuing to slip or skid. This device and its mode of operation have been described in detail in Swiss patent N 289577 and also in Swiss patent NI) 310129. A device for preventing the brakes from being applied before the wheels of the landing gear spin is associated with the device just described.

This device comprises a pair of centrifugal triggers 20 (FIG. 1) integral in rotation with the drum member 4 and urged towards the axis of rotation of the device by spring means (not shown), so as to come into contact with the device. taken with the rear part of an annular member 21 fixed to one of the ends of the actuating rod 15.

A mechanism 22 comprising a cylinder and a piston loaded by a spring and slidably mounted in this cylinder is also provided and an angled lever 23 is arranged between said piston and the actuating rod 15, so that when the pressurized fluid is introduced into the cylinder, the piston is moved upwards against the action of its spring and moves the elbow lever 23, so that the actuating rod 15 is moved axially to a position in which the valve of intake 18 is closed and exhaust valve 19 is open.

The annular member 21 mounted at the end of the actuating rod 15 is pulled between the centrifugal triggers 20 which are first separated and then move towards the axis of rotation to trap the annular member 21 behind them. The brakes cannot therefore be applied before the wheels turn at a determined angular speed, during a wise landing. When this is the case, the centrifugal force overcomes the force of the trigger springs and allows the triggers to move rapidly outward. The annular member 21 and the actuating rod 15 then return to a position for which the intake valve 18 is open and the exhaust valve 19 is closed and the brakes can then be applied.

This device has been described more fully in Swiss Patent No. 310129 and another embodiment of such a device has been described in Swiss Patent No. 292285.

The inlet valve 18 (Fig. 4) of the valve mechanism described above communicates with a source of pressurized fluid through a control valve 46 under the control of the pilot. Another conduit 25 for pressurized fluid directly communicates the same source of pressurized fluid with a hydraulically actuated device (Fig. 3) which comprises a cylindrical housing 26 provided with tubular portions 27 and 28 which extend coaxially with each other. this cylindrical housing,

from each of its ends. The upper tubular portion 27 communicates with the conduit 25 for the pressurized fluid and, therethrough, with the source of the pressurized fluid, and the lower tubular portion 28 communicates with the side, corresponding to the camotage, d A cylinder 29 controlling the raising and lowering of the landing gear. The upper end of the cylindrical casing 26 is provided with a connector 30 through which it communicates with a reservoir for liquid, through a conduit 30a.

A piston 31 is slidably mounted in a fluid-tight manner inside the cylindrical housing 26. This piston is provided with a hollow rod 32 which extends axially from one of its faces and this rod is fitted. in a sealed manner for fluid in an opening made in a wall 33 which separates the cylindrical casing 26 from the upper tubular part 27, said rod extending into said tubular part.

The upper tubular part 27 is provided, in the vicinity of its lower end, with a shoulder 34 which extends inwardly, and the space located between this shoulder and the lower end of the tubular part. upper 27 communicates with the exhaust valve 19 of the device for automatic control of the braking pressure through a conduit 34a which also communicates with the cylinder and piston mechanism 22 of the cocking device associated with said device for automatic control brake pressure.

The end of the hollow piston rod 32 furthest from the piston 31 is shaped to form a valve seat and a valve 35, of frustoconical shape, is housed inside the upper tubular portion 27, a portion of this valve being arranged so as to be able to come into contact with the shoulder 34 of said tubular part and another part of this same valve being arranged so as to be able to come to bear against the upper end of the hollow piston rod 32. The valve 35 is biased downwardly by a spring 35a, so as to bear nor malement against the shoulder 34.

When the piston 31 bears against the lower end of the housing 26, the valve seat formed by the upper end of the hollow rod 32 is located away from said valve, so that pressurized liquid can flow out. through it from the space located between the shoulder 34 and the bottom of the upper tubular part 27, pass downward through the hollow rod 32 and through holes 36 made at the end of this rod adjacent to the piston 31, up to the housing 26, on the side of the latter located above the piston.

The piston 31 has at its center a hole 37 which extends axially through it, and a stopper 38, of frustoconical shape, is fitted in said hole, this stopper 38 being provided with a threaded part 39 by which it is screwed. to the stem of the valve 35, so as to allow the clearance between said plug and the edges of the hole 37 to be adjusted, when the valve 35 rests on the end of the hollow stem 32, to allow a determined volume of liquid to pass under pressure per unit time through hole 37.

A rod 40 is fixed to the face of the piston 31 opposite to the hollow rod 32 and extends axially from this face and to the interior of the lower tubular part 28. The end of this rod furthest away of the piston 31 carries a flange 41 which extends outwardly. A plug 42 provided with a sealing ring 43 is slidably fitted on the rod 40 and is arranged so as to be able to come to fit inside a portion of smaller diameter 44 of the lower tubular portion 28 adjacent to the upper end of this part.

When the stopper 42 is thus fitted in said part 44, it forms a tight seal with the peripheral walls of this part and also with the rod 40. A spring 45 is arranged between the piston 31 and the stopper 42, so as to force normally this plug against the rim 41 presented by the end of the rod 40. The casing 26 and the tubular parts 27 and 28 are completely filled with liquid.

When the aircraft is on the runway, the device used to prevent the application of the brakes is disarmed, that is to say it is in the state shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the actuating rod 15 not being trapped in an ineffective position by the centri fugal triggers 20 and the intake valve 18 of the device for the automatic control of the braking pressure being open, while that the exhaust valve 19 of this device is closed.

However, the control valve 46 under the control of the pilot is then in a position in which it prevents pressurized fluid from the conduit 25 connected to the pressure source from flowing to the brakes through the valve. admission 18.

The piston 31 of the hydraulically actuated device is in contact with the bottom of the housing 26, under the action of the spring 35tt and the plug 42 abuts against the flange 41, under the action of the spring 45. The valve 35 rests against the annular shoulder 34 and thus prevents pressurized liquid from entering from the source into the space communicating with the exhaust valve 19, and the end of the hollow rod 32 forming the valve seat is at a low distance from the valve 35, so that said space, which communicates with the cylinder of the device for preventing the application of the brakes and with the exhaust valve 19 of the valve mechanism, also communicates, through the holes 36 of the hollow rod 32, with the inside of the housing 26 and,

through this casing, with the liquid reservoir via line 30a.

Fig. 5 shows how the installation can be mounted on one of the halves of a retractable landing gear comprising two upright and wheel assemblies, one on each side of the aircraft. The control valve 46 and the hydraulically actuated device comprising the cylindrical housing 26, however, serve for the two halves of the landing gear, the control valve 46 and the conduit 34a communicating with the part of the plant mounted on the landing gear. the other assembly with upright and wheel of the landing gear.

The aircraft takes off in the normal way and, when it is airborne, the pilot actuates a control valve 47 (see fig. 4) so as to communicate the side corresponding to the retraction or the raising of the jack 29 com requiring the movement of the landing gear with a source of pressurized liquid and the side corresponding to the deployment or lowering of this cylinder with a liquid reservoir.

The side corresponding to the retraction of the cylinder communicates with the lower tubular part 28 of the hydraulically actuated device, so that, when this side of said cylinder is pressurized and the landing gear is raised, the pressurized liquid coming from the source of pressurized liquid flows into said part 28 and forces the piston 31 upwards until, this piston reaching a position in which it is adjacent to the upper end of the housing 26, the stopper 42, which moves upward with the piston, is inside the smaller diameter portion 44 of the lower tubular portion 28 and thus sealingly separates said lower tubular portion 28 from the housing 26.

The hollow rod 32 also moves upwards with the piston 31, its end forming the valve seat first of all abutting against the valve 35 and then moving said valve away from its seat formed by the annulus shoulder. laire 34, against the action of the spring 35a urging this valve and against the action exerted in the upper tubular part 27 by the pressurized liquid coming from the source through the pipe 25 independently of the valve 46.

Liquid under pressure from the source then flows into the space below the annular shoulder 34 and thence to the interior of the cylinder of the device used to prevent application of the brakes and up to the exhaust valve 19 of the valve mechanism. The piston of the mechanism 22 is moved upwards by said liquid under pressure, against the action of its spring, so as to displace the elbow lever 23 which, in turn, pulls the annular member 21 mounted at the end of it. the actuating rod 15 through the centrifugal triggers 20 which then return inwards to lock said member.

In this position of the actuating rod 15, the intake valve 18 is closed, the exhaust valve 19 is open, and pressurized liquid contained in the upper tubular portion 27 of the hydraulically actuated device can. flow through the exhaust valve 19 to the pressure chamber 17 of the valve mechanism and from there to the brake actuators to apply the brakes and stop the wheels.

Liquid under pressure leaks around the plug restrictor 38 and through the hole 37 of the piston 31 from the high pressure side of that piston, i.e. from its lower side, to the higher side. low pressure from where it flows to the tank. As the volume of the space below the underside of the piston thus gradually decreases, the piston 31 is forced downward primarily under the action of liquid pressure from the source and exerting a downward thrust on the surface. effective rod. As the piston moves down, the rod 40 attached to it also moves down.

However, the plug 42 which is liquid tightly fitted in the smaller diameter portion 44 of the lower tubular portion 28 is retained in position in this portion by the pressure in the lower tubular portion 28, as long as liquid remains. under pressure in this part, that is to say as long as the side corresponding to the retraction of the jack 29 communicates with the source of pressurized liquid. When the piston 31 slowly descends, the spring 45 disposed between the stopper 42 and the piston 31 is compressed.

The valve 35 is held against the end of the rod 32 by the spring 35a disposed in the upper tubular part 27 and, when the piston 31 approaches its initial position and the lower end of the housing 26, this valve 35 again comes to bear against the annular shoulder 34 formed in said upper tubular part and cuts off the arrival of pressurized fluid from the source.

As the piston rod 32 continues to move, this has the effect of allowing the pressurized liquid contained in said cocking device and in the valve mechanism to flow back through the hollow rod 32 and through the holes 36 made. at one end of the latter to the part of the housing located above the piston, from where this liquid flows back to the reservoir.

The braking pressure applied to the wheel brakes is thus released, at the end of a determined period of time after its initial application. This period of time is determined by the quantity of pressurized liquid passing per unit of time through the constricted orifice 37 made in the piston. As soon as the side corresponding to the retraction of the cylinder is placed in communication with the exhaust and the side corresponding to the extension or lowering of the cylinder is pressurized, the pressure is released in the lower tubular part. 28 and the stopper 42 is free to move downwards under the action of its spring, until it again abuts against the flange 41 which the lower end of the piston rod 40 carries.

Since the amount of time the brakes are automatically applied to prevent the wheels from turning after the aircraft has taken off is a function of the amount of fluid that the throttled port lets through in a determined amount of time, it can therefore be changed anyway desired.
