Description

Composition intended for producing corrosion-resistant coatings and lubricants on metals and method for its preparation The present invention relates to a composition intended for producing on metal surfaces, and in particular ferrous surfaces, a coating acting both as anti-corrosion coating and as a lubricant during metal deformation operations such as drawing, and to a process for the preparation of this composition.

For cold working metals, a lubricant is usually used which cooperates in reducing the friction between the moving metal surfaces, which friction causes, generally in the absence of lubricant, the formation of cracks on the metals and (or) their seizure to the dies. In the drawing of certain soft metals, ordinary lubricating oils have been used with success. lubricating oils for very high pressures, but these materials are not satisfactory in hard metal deformation operations, especially if the deformation is relatively severe.

Hard metals such as iron, steel, stainless steels and extremely hard alloy steels have been successfully subjected to deformation operations by pre-coating the metal surface with a chemical compound, such as a phosphate, an oxide, a sulphide or an oxalate on which is deposited a layer of an ordinary lubricant.

These classic lubricants are ordinary lubricating oils, lubricating oils for extreme pressures, fatty substances or soaps in the dry or aqueous state and fatty substances, oils or soaps associated with various infusible pigments such as clays, graphite, mica, etc.

The use of a combination of chemical coating and lubricant has so far necessitated the application of separate compositions and successive treatments of the metal, first using a phosphate solution, then a first rinsing with water, a second rinsing with water or using a weakly alkaline solution, finally the treatment of the phosphate-coated object by means of a suitable lubricating composition.

The present invention proposes to provide a single composition producing on a metal surface a coating having both protective properties and lubricating properties facilitating a relatively severe deformation of hard metals, in particular iron-based metals.

The composition according to the invention is characterized in that it is formed of an aqueous dispersion containing, in dispersion, a mono-aliphatic ester of phosphoric acid, having 8 to 18 atoms <B> 'of </B> carbon and a metal or ammonium salt of said ester, the <I> pH </I> of this dispersion being between 3 and 5.5.

A subject of the invention is also a process for the preparation of this composition, characterized in that a mono-aliphatic ester of phosphoric acid having 8 to 18 carbon atoms is dispersed in an aqueous medium and a metal or ammonium ion forming with part of said ester a salt which is dispersed in said medium, the <I> pH </I> of the dispersion being adjusted to a value between 3 and 5.5.

The coating formed by bringing the metal into contact with the composition according to the invention has a velvety appearance, is of an amorphous type, partially greasy and capable of being crushed to form a continuous oily film very suitable for behaving like a film. lubricant in metal forming operations. The coating has exceptional adhesive power and resists removal from the metal surface even under the highest pressures normally encountered in current deformation operations.

The composition may also contain, independently of the aliphatic phosphoric ester and its metal salt, an amine capable of reacting with part of the aliphatic phosphoric ester - with formation of a dispersible amine salt and an oxidizing agent or accelerator ordinarily. used in coating solutions of phosphates, for example zinc or manganese phosphates.

The degree of acidity of the compositions according to the invention is critical and the optional incorporation of an amine forming a dispersible amine salt with the aliphatic phosphoric ester makes it easier to obtain the desired degree of acidity. .

In the aliphatic ester of phosphoric acid, the aliphatic part may be saturated or unsaturated; however, esters of saturated alcohols are somewhat more readily available in commerce. If the length of the ester-containing chain was less than 8 carbon atoms, the coating produced would not exhibit lubricating characters to a sufficient degree and if the length of the carbon chain exceeded 18 carbon atoms, the phosphate aliphatic would be insufficiently dispersible in water.

The preferred esters are lauryl esters and oleyl esters. Mixtures of esters having carbon chain lengths between 8 and 18 can be used, and such ester mixtures are in fact preferred because mixed alcohols of this type are readily available and mixed esters are readily available. get on with ease.

The proportions of esters which have been shown to be suitable are of the order of approximately 3 to 80 g per liter for the monolauryl ester of phosphoric acid, also known as monolauryl acid phosphate. Equivalent proportions of other monoesters having 8 to 18 carbon atoms can also be used successfully.

A wide variety of metal ions can be used to prepare the composition according to the invention.

The only apparent restriction on the type of metal ion suitable is that it must be capable of forming with the aliphatic ester of phosphoric acid a salt which is soluble or at least semi-soluble or dispersible in the aqueous dispersion of the ester. aliphatic phosphoric acid. Typical metal ions which have been shown to be of interest in this regard are zinc, aluminum, alkali metals and ammonium, cadmium, copper, nickel and iron.

A fatty film obtained from an aqueous dispersion containing only an aliphatic ester of phosphoric acid having 8 to 18 carbon atoms is of inferior quality, poor adhesion, and appears more like an adsorbed film than 'a chemical coating integral with the surface. The presence of a metal ion in the compositions according to the invention appears to confer on the aqueous dispersion of the aliphatic ester of phosphoric acid the ability to react chemically with the surface and to form a velvety coating of amorphous nature that is an integral part of the metal surface.

The coating resulting from compositions containing both an aliphatic ester of phosphoric acid having 8 to 18 carbon atoms and a compatible metal ion is sufficiently adherent and has a greasy nature such that, under the action of a pressure, the amorphous coating is crushed into a continuous film having good lubricating properties and high resistance to pressure removal.

The proportion of metal ion required in the composition for the formation of high quality coatings is relatively small. This metal ion content can be from 0.0092 to 0.34 gram-valent of metal per liter, or, for zinc for example, from 0.3 to 11 g / liter of zinc. When the zinc ion content, for example, drops below 0.3 g / l of zinc, the coating is formed of a relatively loose greasy film and if this content exceeds 11 g / l the salt of the ester cannot be maintained in dispersion and precipitate.

The metal ion is preferably introduced into the composition in salt form and only limited amounts can be introduced in the form of basic salts or hydroxides. When it is desired to obtain a relatively high concentration of metal ion, the introduction of the metal ion in the state of basic salt or hydroxide is impracticable because of the <I> pH </I> s 'rises to values above the limit set before the desired concentration is reached. The use of salts containing a halide, such as chloride, bromide or iodide, is not recommended.

The incorporation of an amine in the composition according to the invention tends to increase the solubility of the metal salt of the aliphatic phosphate in the dispersion. In order to obtain relatively dense coatings which are particularly suitable for operations involving significant deformation, it is advisable to maintain the concentration of the metal salt around the maximum degree of solubility. The presence of an amine further raises the <I> pH </I> of the solution and provides a convenient means of achieving both the maximum solubility of the metal salt in the dispersion and the <I> control. pH </I> between the required limits of 3 to 5.5.

Amines suitable for this purpose are those which, on reaction with the aliphatic ester of phosphoric acid of 8 to 18 carbon atoms, produce a soluble salt of the ester and produce the effects indicated above. Ammonia, mono- amines, amines, tertiary amines, cyclic and heterocyclic amines are of interest in this respect.

Particular representative examples of these amines are ethanolamine, isopropylamine, hydrazine, 3-isopropoxy-propylamine, triethanolamine and morpholine. The proportion of amine that can be used is that which produces the required <I> pH </I>, that is to say between 3 and 5.5.

The numerical limits of <I> pH </I> of. 3.0 and 5.5 relate to the <I> pH </I> determined using the <I> ad hoc papers. </I> Although the absolute degree of precision that is generally possible obtained using these papers is generally less than that obtained using glass electrodes. the reproducibility and the precision of the <I> pH </I> determinations using these pa piers are in fact better in the case of the dispersions in accordance with the invention than those which can be obtained by help from glass electronics.

The compositions according to the invention form the desired coatings in less time when they contain an accelerating or oxidizing agent. One can use for this purpose any oxidizing agents conventionally used to accelerate the formation of the coatings using a solution, for example zinc phosphate or manganese phosphate. Typical oxidizing agents are nitrites, nitrates, peroxides, chlorates, bromates, sulphites and organic nitro compounds such as meta-mtrobenzene sulphonate and picrylic acid.

For convenience, the oxidizing agents can be added in the form of metal salts such as sodium or other alkali metal salts and the proportion of metal ion thus introduced is small and relatively insignificant relative to the overall content of metal ion.

Suitable concentrations of these oxidizing agents which can be used to reduce the time required for the formation of coatings are 0.3 to 0.5% sodium meta-nitrobenzene sulfonate, 0.01 to 0.5% picric acid. , 0.05 to 0,

  3% hydrogen peroxide, 0.03 to 5% chlorate, 0.03 to 0.5% bromate, 0.01 to 0.15% nitrite, 0.02 to 0,

15% sulfite, 0.03 to 2% nitrate and 0.01 to 0.3% hydroxylamine. In general, the application of the compositions in accordance with the invention comprises bringing the metal surface to be treated into contact with these compositions, then drying the coating thus formed on the metal surface.

As usual, it is good to apply the phosphatic compositions according to the invention while hot and to adjust the contact time of the solution with the metal surface and the concentration of the solution so as to produce the. desired coating thickness. It is possible to operate at temperatures from 32 to 88 C. The drying of the coating on the metal surface is preferably carried out at a high temperature below about 121 C, but if the time required for the complete preparation of the metal surface to be deformed is unimportant, the coating can be air dried.

When the coating is dried by subjecting it to an elevated temperature, there appears to be some increase in the degree of reaction with the metal surface and the coating produced is improved to some extent in its adhesion to the metal. metal surface. Drying the coating at an elevated temperature is therefore preferable. The examples below refer to compositions in accordance with the invention and to their application. <I> Example 1 </I> A mixture is prepared by heating a combined 26.5 g of monolauryl phosphoric acid and 4 g of zinc oxide with 500 cc of water in a mixer. The mixture thus obtained has a <I> pH </I> of 1.2 which is adjusted to 5.5 using sodium carbonate.

Clean mild steel plates are dipped into the solution at 77 - 820 ° C. and left there for half a minute to two minutes, removed and dried. All plates are coated with a smooth, tacky, water-repellent coating with a somewhat dusty appearance. These coatings, crushed by the application of pressure, give a thin, oily film.
