On
Bung and process for its manufacture
The present invention relates to a bung, which is characterized in that it comprises a plastic body, internally threaded to receive a stopper and engaged in an opening in the wall of a metal container, this body having, for its airtight fixing to this wall, a flange molded at one of its ends and, at its other end, a mandrinated circular peripheral bead, clamping between it and the flange an annular portion of said wall.
The invention also comprises a method of manufacturing such a plug, which is characterized in that a plastic body is molded, having a generally cylindrical shape on the outside with a flange at one end and, on its inside, on the one hand, a thread extending over part of its height from the end provided with the collar and, on the other hand, a cylindrical part following the thread, in that this part is engaged in this part cylindrical a metal sleeve, and in that after having placed the body provided with its sleeve in an opening in the wall of the receptacle, this sleeve is mandrelated to form at the same time, by deformation of the adjacent part of said body, a peripheral bead circular clamping between it and the flange an annular part of said wall,
in order to fix the bung in a leaktight manner to the receptacle, the sleeve forming, after mandrating, a rigid frame keeping the bead in its shape.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the plug which is the subject of the invention, and also illustrates, by way of example, an embodiment of the method which the invention comprises. The various figures are sectional views.
Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 relate to different stages of the manufacturing process; and
fig. 6 shows the bung finished and in place on a container.
The plug shown in fig. 6 comprises a body 1, of plastic material, internally threaded at 2 to receive a plug 3, of known shape, having a recess 4, inside which there are projections, one of which is visible at 5, and which serve to rotate it with a tool or by hand.
We see at 6 the wall of a metal container in an opening of which wall the body 1 is engaged. The wall 6 has, to receive the body 1, an annular depression 7, which continues towards the inside of the container in the form of an annular part 8. The body 1 has, at its upper part, an outer flange 9 coming from molding, resting on the bottom of the annular depression 7. The upper face 10 of the body 1 is thus located flush with the outer surface 11 of the wall 6 of the container. At its lower end, the body 1 has a circular peripheral bead 12, mandrelated as will be explained below and clamping, between it and the flange 9, the annular part 8 of the wall 6 of the container.
More exactly, the bead 12 puts pressure on the flared lower end 13 of the annular part 8, while the flange 9 presses on the part 7. This results in a sealed fixing of the bung on the container.
The thread 2 extends over only a part of the height of the body 1, from its upper end having the flange 9.
The part of the interior of this body following the thread is provided with a metal sleeve 14 located, as seen in fig. 6, at the level of the bead 12, the shape of which it follows by being in close contact with the interior of said body at this location. At its lower end, the plug has, when it has not yet been used, a bottom 15 forming part of the body 1 and molded with it. A circular groove 16 makes it possible to easily detach the central part of this base 15 by putting pressure on it, which makes the interior of the container accessible when the stopper 3 is removed. The bush 14 has a flat annular part 17, pressing against the bottom 15. The internal diameter of the part 17 is substantially equal to the external diameter of the groove 16.
The stopper 3 has, at its lower end, an annular projection 18, which, when this stopper is fully screwed into the body 1, comes to rest on the flat annular part 17 of the metal sleeve 14.
For the manufacture of the plug shown, one begins by molding a plastic body having the shape shown in section in FIG. 1 and which will form, at the end of the operations, the body 1 of fig. 6. This body has an exterior general cylindrical shape 19 with a flange 9 at one end. On the inside, during molding, on the one hand, a thread 2 extending over part of its height from the end of the flange 9 is formed and, on the other hand, a part
cylindrical 20 following the thread. We
arranges the body according to fig. 1 in an opening in the wall 6 of a metal container which corresponds exactly to what has been shown in FIG. 6. We engage a metal sleeve 21 inside the cylinder part
drique 20 of the previously molded body.
This stirrer has a cylindrical portion 22
whose outer diameter corresponds to the dia
inner meter of the cylindrical part 20, and
an inner annular part 17. This makes,
a chucking operation is carried out which
has the effect of producing a radial expansion
of the socket 21, as indicated by the
arrows 23, which simultaneously pushes back outside
the material of the molded body to
form, at its lower part, the bead 12,
as seen in fig. 5 and 6. This
deformation of the sleeve 22 causes it
to present the shape of the final sleeve 14 of FIG. 6.
Of course, this chucking operation has the effect of permanently deforming the sleeve 14, which ensures that the shape of the bead 12 is maintained, this
bush forming a rigid frame keeping the bead in its shape despite the plastic material tending, by elasticity, to resume its original shape. Part 8 of the wall
container is thus clamped between the collar 9
and the bead 12, which ensures the fixing
tightness of the plug on the wall of the container.
Then all you have to do is screw in place
cap 3 and the drain is ready for use.
To access the contents of the container, we enter
lift the cap and detach the cen part
bottom trale 15 (fig. 6).
If you want to remove the bung from the container,
for example to replace it, after new
filling the container with a new plug,
all you have to do is cut the bush 14. Therefore
this sleeve no longer forming a rigid frame
for bead 12, this bead disappears
more or less completely under the effect of
the elasticity of the plastic that forms it
and the bung can easily be removed from the opening in the wall 6. The new bung will be fitted as described above.
