EMI0004.0003
A (fig. 3)
Les variations de pression telles qu'elles résultent des lignes<I>A</I> et<I>B</I> (fig.
Free piston autogenerator The subject of the invention is an autogenerator of hot gases under pressure with free piston and variable operating pressure comprising a driving part working according to the two-stroke cycle, a compressor part sucking at a constant pressure and supplying said part. pressurized air motor, a pneumatic accumulator of free piston return energy and a device for adjusting the mass of air contained by the accumulator as a function of the operating pressure of the autogenerator.
Autogenerators of this type are known in which the device for adjusting the mass of air contained by the accumulator is arranged so as to maintain at least approximately constant the final compression pressure in the engine cylinder, whatever the pressure. autogenerator operating pressure.
The autogenerator according to the invention is characterized by the fact that said adjusting device is arranged such that, for all normal operating pressures above the pressure corresponding to idling, the air mass , in the accumulator, increases and decreases as the running pressure increases and decreases, so that the final pressure <B> of </B> -the compression in the engine cylinder increases and decreases with the 'running pressure.
Thanks to this characteristic, the number of oscillations that the free piston performs in the unit of time varies with the load of the machine, so that a decrease in the variation is obtained that the stroke length of this piston would otherwise have to be. undergo to allow the machine to deliver the desired power.
The autogenerator established according to the invention is therefore particularly flexible to adapt to the load variations to which it is subjected during its operation.
The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the autogenerator according to the invention, and two variants thereof.
Fig. 1 shows, schematically in axial section, this embodiment.
Figs. 2 and 3 show diagrams which respectively illustrate the variations in the average pressure prevailing in the return pneumatic snow accumulator and the variations in the maximum compression pressure in the engine cylinder, depending on the variations in the average of the pressures prevailing in the casing of the autogenerator shown in FIG. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 each show, in axial section, a variant of detail of the autogenerator of FIG. 1.
Fig. 6 is an explanatory diagram. The autogenerator represented by FIG. 1 comprises a motor cylinder 1 in which the motor element 2 of a free piston works which is integral with a compressor element 3 which works in a compressor cylinder 4.
The driving part of this autogenerator, comprising cylinder 1 and element 2 of the pis ton, works according to the two-stroke diesel cycle. Cylinder 1 is provided with a fuel injector S, intake openings 6 for the purging and supply air and exhaust openings 7 from which a mixture formed by the excess exits. of purging air and the incompletely expanded combustion gases, this mixture serving to drive, for example, a gas turbine (not represented by the sin).
The openings 6 and 7 are controlled by the motor piston 2.
The compressor part of the autogenerator comprises the element 3 of the piston and the cylinder 4, and the compartment located on the inner side of the element 3, that is to say on the side facing the driving part, is provided with inlet valves 8 and discharge valves 9; these latter valves allow the delivery of compressed air into said interior compartment in a casing 10 which surrounds the engine cylinder 1.
The cylinder compartment 4, located on the outer side of the udder element 3, serves as a pneumatic accumulator of return energy. Indeed, the mass of air located towards the outside of the piston element 3 em stores, during the working stroke of the driving element 2, almost all the energy developed during this stroke, in the cylinder. engine. During the next stroke, this air, by expanding, restores this energy to the free piston which, during this last stroke, compresses the air in the internal compartment of the cylinder 4, pushes this air back into the housing 10 and compresses it. 'combustion air which is inside the engine cylinder 1.
In the diagram of fig. 3, curve A represents the variation of the final compression pressure in the engine cylinder, as a function of the pressure p which prevails in the casing 10. It can be seen that the compression pressure is, for example, equal to 30 atmo spheres, for the minimum pressure <I> pl </I> which prevails in the casing 10, during normal operation of the machine, for the idle operation of the autogenerator, while the final compression pressure reaches a value of 70 at mospheres, for the maximum pressure in the casing which corresponds to the maximum load.
The mass of air contained in the accumulator is regulated, by a slide 12, as a function of the average of the pressures prevailing, on the one hand, in the energy accumulator and, on the other hand, in the casing. 10. This slide 12 is connected to a piston 13 working in a cylinder 14 and dividing this cylinder into two chambers, one of which communicates, through a throttle opening 15, with the interior of the pneumatic energy accumulator. , while the other communicates, via a throttling duct 16, with a duct 11 communicating with the casing 10.
On the piston 13 acts, in addition, a return spring 17 having a tendency to bring or maintain the spool 12 in a position in which the supply air can enter the accumulator, but for which the exhaust d air out of the accumulator is not possible.
The drawer 12 has the form of a box which is divided, by a partition 18, into two chambers 19 and 20. The partition 18 is pierced with openings controlled by check valves 21 opening so that ' a flow is only possible from chamber 19 to chamber 20.
The side walls of the chambers have openings 22 and 23 co-operating with a central slot, communicating with the duct 11, of a guide sleeve 24 in which the slide 12 can be moved axially by the piston 13.
- The location of the openings 22 and 23 and the length of the guide sleeve 24 are chosen such that when the slide 12 is moved out of its neutral position which is shown in the drawing and for which the openings 22 and 23 are closed by the wall of the socket 24, one of the series of openings enters into communication with the conduit <B> 11, </B> while the other series of openings enters into communication with the interior of the energy accumulator.
If, for example, following an upward movement of the drawer 12, the openings 23 enter into communication with the duct 11 and the openings 22 enter into communication with the interior of the battery, only a power supply from the The pressurized air accumulator becomes possible, this air then passing from the compartment provided with the openings 23 and through the check valves 21 into the compartment comprising the openings 22 and, from there, through these latter openings, into the inside the accumulator.
On the other hand, if the drawer 12 is moved downwards, so that the openings 22 enter into communication with the duct 11 and that the openings 23 enter into communication with the interior of the accumulator, only the evacuation of a certain amount of air out of the latter is possible. The exhaust air then passes through the openings 23, the check valves 21, the openings 22, into the duct 11.
To adjust the mass of air in the accumulator, it would also be possible to introduce air into this accumulator from a source separate from the casing 10, and allow air to escape from the accumulator into the atmosphere. .
The described autogenerator could be arranged so that the range of its normal operating pressures extends from 1 to 4 effective atmospheres, for example. The table below shows, for the various normal operating pressures of this autogenerator, the average pressures of the accumulator and the final compression pressures reached in the engine cylinder, obtained.

This gives the curve B of fig. 2. On the other hand, in this same machine, there exists, for all the operating pressures, a difference of 0.600 kg / cm2 between the pressure of the air which is in the casing 10 and that of the gas which leaves. of the generator, the latter pressure being the operating pressure with which the machine receiving the engine gases is supplied. Therefore, there is the formula Pcarter = Pmarche -! - 0.600 kg / cm2.

EMI0004.0012
indicated in this diagram corresponds to the ratio existing in known machines for which the final com pressure in the engine cylinder always remains approximately constant at around 40 atmospheres. We see, however, by this diagram that, for said ratio
EMI0004.0013
the final compression in the engine cylinder drops slightly in the operating pressure zone, between 1 and 2.3 atmospheres, when the latter pressures rise, this compression then remains at its minimum value for operating pressures between 2.3 and 3 atmo spheres, and finally rises slightly for operating pressures above 3 atmo spheres.
On the other hand, in the autogenerator described, the ratio is such that the final compression in the
EMI0004.0015
The engine cylinder constantly increases throughout the working pressure range, that is to say from the pressure of 1 effective atmo sphere up to the maximum pressure of 4 effective atmospheres.
If the report
EMI0004.0016
is equal to 1.52, the final compression in the engine cylinder, for the same range of operating pressures of the gases delivered by the autogenerator, varies between approximately 40 atmospheres (operating pressure: 1 atmo sphere) and approximately 80 atmospheres (working pressure: 4 atmospheres).
If the report
EMI0004.0018
becomes equal to 1.35, the final compression pressure in the engine cylinder is always equal to approximately 40 atmospheres for an operating pressure of approximately 1 atmosphere and becomes equal to approximately 110 atmospheres for an operating pressure of 4 atmospheres .
It will be seen from the foregoing that the curve A - indicated in fig. 3 - is carried out when the report
EMI0004.0020
is equal to about 1.52.
The force of the spring 17 determines the point at which the line B intersects the vertical corresponding to the p-value of the flow pressure.
It should be noted that line B, when the averages of the pressures in the accumulator and in the crankcase are made to act directly on the piston 13, takes the form of a straight line.
The pressure variations as they result from lines <I> A </I> and <I> B </I> (fig. 3 and 2) are perfectly fine, at least during the period of normal operation of the machine. 'self-generator described, that is to say in the period during which the machine, once it has reached its normal thermal state, works between its minimum load (no-load operation) for which the flow pressure is equal to p' and its maximum load corresponding to the pressure plau. However, during the start-up period, when the machine is still cold, it may be advantageous to increase the final engine compression pressure and, for this purpose, the average pressure in the accumulator,
beyond the values indicated by the lines <I> A </I> and <I> B, </I> in the zone extending between the pressure p "and said pressure p1.
For this purpose, either the force which is a function of the average pressure in the accumulator and which acts on the surface <I> S </I> <B> 2 during the starting period of the machine can be reduced. </B> of piston 13, or we can reinforce the force which is a function of the operating pressure and which acts on the surface SI of piston 13. The initial part of the lines <I> A </ I is thus transformed > and <I> B, </I> so as to give these parts the shape indicated by the broken lines in figs. 3 and 2 and denoted by <I> A '</I> and <I> B'. </I> The final engine compression pressures indicated by part A 'of curve A ensure absolute starting without failure.
In the variant of FIG. 4, the accumulator adjustment device is arranged so as to give, during the starting period, that is to say between the pressures pO <I> and pl, </I> the lines <I> B 'and A', </I> and, during the period of normal operation of the autogenerator, between the pressures <I> pl </I> (no-load operation) and pma- ,, the lines <I> B </I> and <I> A. </I> This variant is provided, between the throttle orifice 15a provided in the wall of the accumulator and the space in the cylinder 14 above piston 13, a valve 25 loaded by a spring 26 which acts on said valve 25, in the closing direction,
by means of a piston 27 movable in a cylinder 28. The end 29 of the rod 30 of this valve is pressed against the piston 27 by a spring 31. The cylinder compartment 14 which is located below the piston 13 communicates by a duct 32, with the cylinder compartment 28 which is located above the piston 27.
At the start of starting, when the pressure in the casing 10 is equal to p, the spring 26 acts with all its force, in the direction of the closing of the valve 25. The average of the pressures of the accumulator transmitted by the or verture 15a is therefore strongly constricted passing through said valve 25. Consequently, the pressure which acts on the upper surface S <B> <I> 2 </I> </B> of the piston 13 is reduced compared to the average of the pressures of the accumulator which, normally, should act on said surface. This has the effect of allowing the res sort 17 to maintain the drawer 12 in a position for which it establishes the communication going from the casing to the energy accumulator, but prohibits communication in the opposite direction.
At the start of start-up, when the pressure p prevails in the crankcase 10, the average of the pressures in the accumulator is thus OP greater than the average of the normal pressures indicated by the section of line B with the vertical corresponding to the pressure pO. A corresponding increase indicated by the section of the curve A 'with the same vertical is obtained for the final engine compression pressure.
As the pressure increases in the housing 10, the force with which the spring 26 acts on the valve 25 decreases as a result of the transmission, through the conduits 11, 16 and 32, of the average pressure prevailing in the housing, which acts on the piston 27 in a direction opposite to that of the spring 26. At the moment when the average of the pressures in the housing reaches the value p1, the pressure acting on the piston 27 fully balances the force of the spring 26 and the valve 25 opens fully, thus ceasing any throttling effect.
The average of the pressures prevailing in the accumulator then acts entirely on the piston 13, so that the operation of the autdgenerator becomes that indicated by the curves <I> B </I> and <I> A. </ I>
The variant shown in FIG. 5 is provided, between the return energy accumulator and the cylinder compartment 14 which is located above the piston 13, with two throttling channels 15b, 15c.
The channel 15c has a free section much smaller than the free section of the channel 15b and the latter channel opens into the cylinder 14, at a place which is at a certain distance from the bottom of said cylinder, the bottom in which the channel is pierced. 15c. As a result of said arrangement of the channel <I> 15b, </I> the opening with which this channel opens into the cylinder 14 is closed by the piston 13, at the start of the start-up period, given that at This moment, the spring 17 pushes the piston 13 upwards, against the bottom of the cylinder 14 comprising the channel 15c, the spool 12 thus opening itself in a position in which the air from the accumulator cannot escape. to the housing 10.
The throttle channel 15c, because of its small diameter, as long as it constitutes the only communication between the cylinder 14 and the energy accumulator, delays the establishment, in the cylinder 14 above the piston 13 , a pressure equal to the average of the pressures prevailing in the accumulator. The device of FIG. 5 therefore works, during the start-up period, so as to ensure the operation indicated by curves A 'and B' of FIGS. 2 and 3.
However, when the piston 13 is pushed back by the pressure acting on its upper surface S ', to a place where it releases the opening through which the channel 15b opens into the cylinder 14, the pressure re gaining on the surface S = will become equal to the average of the pressures prevailing in the accumulator and the normal operation of the adjustment device ensuring operation, according to the curves <I> B </I> and <I> A </I> of fig. 2 and 3, will begin.
Of course, one could obtain an operation of the described autogenerator adjustment device similar to that indicated above, by reinforcing during the period. starting, the pressure which acts on the lower surface S1 of the piston 13, instead of reducing, during said period, the pressure which acts on the upper surface S2 of this same piston.
The autogenerators to which the fi- relate. 4 and 5 will have as main advantages the rapidity with which their operation adapts to each variation of the load, the simplicity of their construction and the safety of their operation, in particular the safety with which their starting is obtained.
