Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 Process for the polycondensation of terephthalic acid di-glycol esters in melt flow. It is known that terephthalic acid di-ethylene glycol ester can be converted into polyethylene terephthalate in the melt flow. The split off glycol must be removed. This is done by using a vacuum or inert gases, such as. B. nitrogen. In the latter case, the gases are passed over or through the melt.

   It turns out, however, that the removal of the split off glycol takes place only slowly and incompletely even when large amounts of nitrogen, for example, are used. As a result, the products obtained are not sufficiently condensed and, if they are formed into films or threads, have insufficient tensile strength. In a known method, it has been proposed to carry out the condensation to polyethylene terephthalate only when a vacuum is applied, in order to be able to completely remove all deposited glycol, because without the application of vacuum only low molecular weight polycondensates and the threads obtained therefrom are obtained are brittle.

  The use of nitrogen as an inert gas has significant disadvantages. On the one hand, the nitrogen contains small amounts of oxygen which are difficult to remove and which, even in low concentrations, have a damaging effect on the resulting polycondensate. Furthermore, the nitrogen has a poor heat capacity, which means that the nitrogen must be very carefully insulated against heat emission.

  It has been found that in the polycondensation of terephthalic acid di-glycol esters in the melt flow, the removal of the split off glycol is much faster than when using nitrogen or the like and highly condensed products can be obtained without the use of a vacuum if one is used to remove the split off glycol a stream of heated to 170 to 250 C vapors of hydrocarbons, which have multiple bonds at most double bonds of aromatic rings, is used. It is advisable to proceed in such a way that the vapors, which are preferably heated to 200.degree. C., are passed through the melt heated to 260 to 270.degree.

   It is also possible to carry out the reaction in a continuous operation, the vapors being introduced in countercurrent to the condensate formed. For this purpose, the reaction material is pressed into a reaction vessel after it has been freed from methanol and most of the excess glycol, suitably by means of a nozzle, so that it enters the vessel in a series of thin jets. It collects on the bottom of the vessel and is pumped from there to the nozzle, then squeezed out again, etc. At the same time, for example, vaporous benzene flows in

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 past the liquid threads.

   In order to work continuously, a small amount of the reaction material freed from methanol and most of the glycol is continuously added, while condensation product is continuously removed from under the reaction vessel. During this process, the mixture is continuously pumped in, while benzene vapor is passed through the reaction vessel. The condensation product continuously discharged has a significantly higher degree of polycondensation than the one supplied, but has to be passed through the same or a similar apparatus again to be condensed to the end.

   You can also connect two or more of these devices in series.

  The following compounds have proven to be useful as hydrocarbons of the type defined above: Undecane and similar homologues, benzene, toluene, gylene, cyclohexane and the like. a. The use of these compounds, in contrast to the use of nitrogen, has the following advantages: These compounds can be freed from any dissolved or contained oxygen without any difficulty and can easily be recovered again after use.

   In addition, these compounds have a significantly higher heat capacity than nitrogen, for example. If you heat them up before they are introduced into the reaction mixture, they will maintain this high temperature for much longer than is the case with nitrogen.

  The advantage of the process according to the invention over the customary vacuum process is that the ingress of small amounts of oxygen into the apparatus, which can only be avoided with great difficulty in the vacuum process, can be completely eliminated. Such an ingress of oxygen leads to discoloration of the condensate, even with the smallest amounts of oxygen. Example 1 20 g of dimethyl terephthalate are transesterified with 20 g of ethylene glycol with addition of a zinc oxide-boron trioxide catalyst in the usual way until the elimination of methanol has ended (time required about two hours).

  After increasing the temperature to 250 ° C., pure benzene vapor at 185 ° C. was passed through the present transesterification product for six hours while stirring vigorously, the melt becoming increasingly viscous.

  The end product obtained melted at 249.5 ° C. and showed very good thread-forming properties with K values of about 49 to 50.

     If, on the other hand, nitrogen is used, the following results are obtained: 20 g of dimethyl terephthalate were transesterified with 20 g of ethylene glycol as described above and the excess ethylene glycol was then largely removed by distillation.

  In the present transesterification process, after increasing the temperature to 250 ° C., a stream of nitrogen heated to 160 ° C. was passed through for ten hours with vigorous stirring. The end product obtained melted at 248 ° C. and had K values of 29.5 to 31.1 with only inadequate thread-forming properties.

   This counter-test shows that when nitrogen is used as the inert gas, significantly longer reaction times (ten hours) are required and poorer polycondensates with a low K value (29 to 31) are obtained. EXAMPLE 2 20 g of terephthalic acid dimethyl ester were, exactly as described in Example 1, transesterified and the excess glycol was largely removed by distillation.

  In the subsequent condensation, when the temperature of the reaction mixture was increased to 270 ° C. with vigorous stirring, a stream of gaseous decahydro-aronaphthalene at 190 ° C. was passed through at a flow rate of 12 l / h for six hours.

  This resulted in a pure white end product with very good thread-forming properties.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 Melting point 249 ° C, K value (in 1% m-cresol solution) 48 to 49.

  Example 3 60 g of dimethyl terephthalate were condensed after transesterification with 58.4 g of ethylene glycol analogously to the examples described above. A cyclohexane stream of 35 l / h heated to 195 ° C. is passed through it, 485 cubic centimeters of cyclohexane being evaporated and recovered within a condensation period of 7 hours.

  The pure white polyethylene terephthalate had very good thread-forming properties and a melting point of 249 C. K value 48.5.
