Machine for spreading a viscous substance on a base The present invention relates to a machine for spreading a viscous substance on a base. This base can be more or less solid, and the invention relates in particular to a machine for spreading butter or margarine on slices of bread.
The object of the invention is to improve the known machines comprising a perforated rotary cylindrical support, means for filling the perforations of the support with said substance, and a series of projections carried by a roller and capable of meshing with said perforations to eject 1a. substance contained in these on the surface of the base.
The support is cylindrical in shape and the base is moved opposite the support by a conveyor, for example an endless belt.
The machine which is the object of the present invention is characterized in that it comprises a perforated rotary support, means for filling the perforations of said support with said substance, a roller carrying a series of projections capable of engaging with said perforations for ejecting the substance contained therein onto the surface of the base, a conveyor for the base, and means for driving the conveyor in the same direction as the adjacent part of the support but at a lower speed, so as to produce a spread of the substance on the base.
The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view thereof, partially in section.
Fig. 2 is a section on 2-2 of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is an elevational view from the rear.
Fig. 4 is a section on a larger scale, along 4-4 of FIG. 1.
In the embodiment shown, the machine is used to spread butter and comprises a base 1 supporting a side plate 2 on one side of this base and two side plates 3 and 4 on the other side, each parallel. to the other and to the plate 2. The plates 3 and 4 are bolted to the base and the plate 2 is fixed to the latter by two screws 5 with knurled head.
The plate 2 comprises a boss 8 turned towards the interior of the machine, the face of which is machined so as to be parallel to the plate 2. A block 6 is firmly held between the plates 2 and 3, at right angles to the latter. The end of the block 6 close to the plate 2 is held against a circular sealing plate 20 having a circular hole in a boss whose axis is disposed eccentrically and vertically below the center of this plate.
The latter is rigidly supported by a pin 7 which passes through the plate 2 and the plate 20 and enters the end of the block 6. The plate 20 is also supported by a pin 21 which passes through the eccentric boss and which is supported in turn by the side plate 3 by means of ball bearings 32 and 33 mounted in a boss 60.
The end of the block 6 near the plate 3 is held against another circular plate 11 which has a hole and fits tightly around the axis 21. The plate 11 and the block 6 are held in this position by pegs 10 passing through the plate 3.
The block 6 has a crescent-shaped section and its outer surface constitutes a bearing for a perforated cylindrical support 12. The outer surface of the block has a radius of curvature equal to the inner radius of the support 12.
Grooves are cut in the outer surface of the block 6 and have a depth of about 1.6 mm, these grooves being arranged so as to be opposed to the various rows of perforations made in the support 12. Each groove is cut from so as to end flush with the surface of block 6 on the lower edges of said block. The ribs 14 separating the grooves engage the support between the rows of perforations, the support rotating on said ribs.
The axis 21 carries a toothed roller 15 which meshes exactly with the perforations of the support and also serves to rotate the latter.
The pin 21 is mounted in the ball bearings 32, 33 carried by the boss 60 and an oil seal 34 is disposed between the plate 11 and the bearing 32. The outer end of the pin 21 projects to the- beyond the boss 60 and carries a drive pinion 46 keyed on the axis.
The block 6 is approximately 4.8 mm longer than the support at each end and it constitutes a direct support for a hopper 16, the lower part of which has a radius of curvature equal to that of the external face of the block, so that it lands exactly on the latter. The hopper is fixed by adjustable screws 18 screwed into the side plates 2 and 3, these screws engaging with brackets 19 in the form of a fork on the side of the hopper.
A weight 22 is able to slide through the hopper to push down the material to be spread 17.
The leading edge of hopper 19 (on the left looking at Fig. 1) is the arched shape and has a radius of curvature greater than that of the support, this arched portion adjusting around the support while leaving clearance. about 3 mm between them. The trailing edge of the hopper comprises an adjustable plate 23, the lower edge of which can be brought into close proximity to the support.
A conveyor belt 24 is supported by rollers 25 and 26 so as to lie in a horizontal position, the support being disposed above the central part of the belt. The roller 26 is mounted on an axis 27 by means of sleeve bearings 62, 63 and the axis is mounted in an adjustable manner, at one of these ends, in a slot 36 formed in the plate 3, a nut 35 allowing lock the axis in the desired position. This adjustment allows the conveyor belt to be tensioned.
The roller 25 is carried by a pin 28 which is mounted, at one of its ends, in two bearings 29, 30 which are mounted in a wise bos 61 of the plate 3. The end of the pin extends to through this boss and wears a pin 31.
The two pinions 46 and 31 could be replaced by other pinions having the required number of teeth. These pinions are arranged so that the roller 25 and the support 12 rotate in the same direction.
The roller 25 and the support 12 are dragged by a chain 44 (fig. 3) from a pinion 43. A motor 40 is arranged in a base 65 and is connected to a gear reducer 41 by a coupling 42, the output shaft of the reduction gear carrying the pinion 43.
The tension of the chain 44 can be adjusted by means of a tensioner pinion 47 carried by a plate 63 mounted on the external face of the boss 60: The space between the upper surface of the conveyor belt and the support 12 is adjusted according to the thickness of the bread, by means of a curved plate 38. mounted on a pin 39 disposed below the upper surface of the belt. The tension on the belt produced by this plate is ensured by a counterweight 48 mounted on a rod 49 rigidly fixed to the axis 39.
A spreader plate 67 mounted on a rod 50 is placed above the roller 26 and held against the conveyor belt by an adjustable weight 51 mounted on the rod 50, the latter being pivotally mounted on an axis 68.
The pinion 31 has a greater number of teeth than the pinion 46, so that the peripheral speed of rotation of the support is between one and one third and two times the speed of the belt 24. The purpose of this speed difference will be discussed later.
The machine works as follows: butter is placed in the hopper 16, and the weight 22 is placed in the latter. The butter is forced through the perforations of the support 12 when the latter rotates, the grooves formed in the block 6 facilitating the entry of the butter into the perforations. As the support rotates, the small lumps formed by the perforations are pushed out of them by the teeth of the roller 15.
The bread which is placed below the support 12 and which moves in the same direction as the part of the support which is close to this bread, is covered with the lumps of butter from each row of perforations in turn. and, due to the difference in speed between the support and the bread, the butter is spread over the bread. The latter continues to move with the belt and the spreading of the butter is completed by the spreading plate 57. The thickness of the bread is not important because the curved plate 38 pushes the bread against the bread. support 12.
If no slice of bread passes below the support 12, the belt is prevented from coming against the support 12 by means of a stopper 37 which engages the curved plate 38. Thus, the butter is not spread on the belt. conveyor.
The butter is prevented from escaping from the support other than through the perforations by means of the plates 20 and 11 and also of the adjustable plate 23. The seal 34 prevents the escape of butter and also prevents the entry of. oil from the bearings 32 and 33. By the presence of the plate 23 and as a result of the flushing of the grooves in the lower edges of the block 6, the small lumps of butter have a thickness equal to that of the wall of the support 12..
As a result of the movement of the bread on the belt in the direction of the ejection of the small lumps of butter from the support, no deposit of butter is produced on the leading edge of each portion of bread when it comes together. moves below the support.
The radius of curvature of the bottom of the hopper, at the leading edge and near the support; radius greater than that of the support, and the play existing between the hopper and the support are intended to allow the butter which adheres to the outer surface of the rotating support to return to the hopper, which prevents any loss of butter and maintains a exact control of the spread.
