Method of advancing a tape to be printed in an office machine and office machine for implementing the method The present invention relates to a method of advancing a tape to be printed in an office machine, and to an office machine for carrying out the method.
The mechanisms for advancing and printing a strip and ejecting labels cut from this strip are well known, but they have the following disadvantage: when printing of variable data must be carried out in predetermined zones of If a tape is printed in advance, the usual feed mechanisms are liable to give rise to slight cumulative errors in the amount of tape supplied to the printing mechanism. These cumulative errors cause the printed variable data to no longer relate properly to the fixed data, making the label difficult to read or unreadable.
The invention comprises a method of advancing a tape to be printed in an office machine, by successive identical movements, the tape being provided with openings separated by distances equal to said movements, these openings being intended to cooperate with a stop member, a process according to which the strip is first advanced by an amount greater than said displacement, and then in the opposite direction by an amount determined by the stop member. This method is characterized in that the strip is moved in said opposite direction until it is stopped by introducing said stop member into the first opening encountered.
The invention also comprises an office machine for carrying out this method, comprising an advancement roller and a pressure roller for advancing the web. It is characterized by a drive member in reverse direction, by a control mechanism intended to effect the cooperation of said drive member in the reverse direction with the pressure roller, and by a drive mechanism capable of 'driving said member when it cooperates with the pressure roller, to effect the drive in the reverse direction of the strip.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine which the invention comprises.

Fig. 8 is a detail view of a slide for advancing in the opposite direction and of its drive and control mechanisms.
Fig. 9 is a facsimile of one side of a label which comes out of the machine and on which part of the indications have been printed beforehand on the tape from which the label has been cut.
The fi-. 10 is a facsimile of a portion of the strip from which the label of FIG. 9, with the particulars in question previously printed on the opposite side of the strip.
The office machine shown allows the use of a roll formed from a strip on which a printing has been carried out in order to improve the appearance thereof or to place thereon certain data used to prepare labels which must be printed. attached or placed in pre-prepared packaging, for example packaging for meat, cheese, etc. These labels are primarily used to indicate the contents, weight, price per pound and total price of packages. The machine shown is used to print and produce labels for use with meat wrappers.
However, this is only a non-limiting use of these labels and is only an example, since with slight adaptations and modifications the machine can be used to prepare labels for use with other labels. goods, for example for the sale of pre-packaged goods, and can also be used to produce cards, tickets or other forms of printed records for various commercial applications.
The use of a roll formed from a web printed in advance and from which the labels are produced presents unusual problems in this type of machine. It can be seen, for example, that, on each label, the printing carried out by the machine must appear in the same relative position, so as not to be superimposed on prints or on descriptive patterns printed beforehand on the web during production of the latter, which would have the effect of rendering the label illegible or, at best, unattractive in appearance.
Likewise, the knife which separates each of the successive labels from the strip must cut at the correct position in relation to the previously printed strip, so that each label contains the indications previously printed in the correct position.
It is therefore essential, when using a previously printed tape to manufacture labels that the initial positioning of this tape, in relation to the printing and separation mechanisms, is correct and that each operation of Successive web feed drives exactly the same web length so as to ensure that an appropriate regular rate of previously printed web feed is obtained with respect to the printing and separation mechanisms of the machine. It is also noted, with regard to the feeding of the strip, that too long or too short a feeding operation would lead to a cumulative error.
That is, even a small difference between the desired length and the actual length, would be multiplied during successive operations, so that, for example, the third or fourth label printed would already be shifted by one. quantity much larger than the first and so on.
In the implementation of the process that allows the machine shown, this problem has been solved by using regularly spaced openings in the strip to be printed, openings which cooperate with a positioning pin serving for the initial positioning of the strip and cooperating also with the feeding mechanism of the machine, so as to ensure the precise positioning of the belt in every machine working cycle.
The machine shown comprises left and right frames fixed at a convenient distance from each other by means of a base plate and several cross frames, bars and rods. The machine mechanism is enclosed in a suitable box fixed to the base plate by means of screws.
The machine has a keyboard with various types of keys and a trigger bar. This keypad has weight and height keys. Controls setting the price per pound to be printed on the label are located on the side of the machine. There is also a removable pad 43 (FIG. 1) for printing the name of the contents of the package on the label, as well as a printing cylinder 20 for printing other data thereon.
After lowering the keys to suitable amounts and weights to establish the weight and price of the packaged product to be labeled, a trip bar is depressed to start the machine. The data composed by the lowering of the keys is transmitted to the corresponding printing wheels and is, together with the unit price and the name of the contents, printed on a section of the web which is then separated from the roll and ejected from the machine. in the form of a label as shown in FIG. 9. The data composed on the printing cylinder 20 was printed on this label during the previous operations of the machine.
The drive energy of the machine can be obtained by means of an electric motor (not shown) or a crank (not shown). The operating release bar is connected, by a mechanism not shown, to a slide 13 (fig. 6 and 7) capable of moving vertically by cooperation of a slot and a pin at its upper end ( not shown) and a similar slot at its lower end, which cooperates with a pin 14 fixed in the right side frame 19.
An extension at right angles to the lower end of the slide 13 carries a pin 15 penetrating a notch formed at the end of a crank pin 16 fixed to the journal of a clutch control lever 17 mounted freely on a stud 18 supported by two ears bent outwards from the right side frame 19. A spring (not shown) pushes the clutch control lever 17 (fig. 7) in the senestrorsum direction so as to move the slide 13 downwards when the latter is released by lowering the trip bar.
This movement of the clutch control lever 17 allows the engagement of the clutch mechanism which connects the drive motor to a main camshaft 22 (FIG. 1) journaled in the frame of the machine, and simultaneously activates a switch which closes the electric circuit of the motor so as to start the machine.
When the machine is driven by the engine, the main camshaft 22 performs one full rotation, which drives the machine through a series of mechanical devices arranged between the engine and the shaft 22.
If the machine is driven by means of a crank, the shaft 22 undergoes a complete rotation under the action of the following gear train: the crank is engaged to a pinion 23 mounted on a pin 24 carried by the side frame 19. The pinion 23 meshes with a pinion 25 mounted in play on a stud 26. The pinion 25 meshes with an idler tooth 27, which in turn meshes with a pinion 28 mounted on the main camshaft 22. The ratio of the gears of this train is such that in order to make the shaft 22 complete one revolution, as required by each operation of the machine, it is necessary to make two complete revolutions with the crank.
The tape to be printed 29 is wound up in the form of a roll 291 (FIGS. 6 and 7) and carries prior prints. On this strip are printed, on one side (fig. 9), beforehand for each label, a decorative border and the name of the store which uses the label and, on the other side (fig. 10), the indication of the name and address of the store.
The web is advanced upwards through a lower guide chute 30 (fig. 1) which brings the web between the paper feed edges of the printing cylinder 20 and a rubber pressure roller 31. which cooperates with said edges to advance the strip to be printed upwards in front of a knife 32 after having passed through an intermediate chute 33 connected to said knife, the strip then being brought in cooperation with printing wheels (not shown) and a horn hammer respondent 34,
the pad 43 and a movable printing unit 44 and a label ejection mechanism comprising two pairs of rollers 35 and 36 which eject the upwardly disposed edge of a label 37 (fig. 9) out of a chute 38 upper, after it has been cut by the knife 32 and thus separated from the strip 29. A slightly elastic finger (not shown) placed in the upper chute 38 sufficiently grips the finished label 37 to prevent it from falling into the upper chute. chute and maintains it in a position from which it is conveniently accessible to the operator who removes it.
The printing cylinder 20 is provided with printing wheels for printing the designation of the product to be labeled and also with a two-letter code indicating the date of the packaging, as shown for example by the indication P.T. PACKAGING. in the label of fig. 9. An inking roller 39 (fig. 1) carried by two arms 40, is used to ink the printing surface of the printing cylinder 20.
The arms 40 tend to rotate in the senestrorsum direction around a shaft 41 on which they are pivotally mounted, under the action of springs (not shown) so as to normally hold the roller 39 in contact with the printing cylinder. A finger 42, carried by one of the arms 40, is used to rotate the roller against the action of the spring so as to allow the roller 39 to be removed in order to coat it again with ink.
The precise positioning of the printing strip 29 relative to the various printing elements and to the knife 32, is obtained with the aid of members which will be described below. As shown in Figs. 9 and 10, the strip 29 has openings 49 arranged at regular intervals corresponding to the length determined in advance of a label 37.
The openings 49 are intended to cooperate with a stop 50 (fig. 1, 3 and 5) for advancing in the opposite direction, which comprises an end portion curved upwards and is fixed between the upper surface of an arm 51 and a block 52 with the aid of appropriate organs, for example by means of rivets. The arm 51 has two pins 53 spaced vertically and arranged to cooperate with corresponding slots 54 of a support piece 55 rotatably mounted on a shaft 56 disposed between frames 57 (fig. 6 and 7) and 58 (fia. 1) of the machine.
To the upper stud 53 is fixed a spring 59, hooked at its other end to a stud 60 of the support 55 and which pulls the studs 53 upwards so as to abut against the upper ends of their corresponding windows 54 in the part. support 55. An additional stud 61, also mounted on the arm 51, extends outwardly from the side of the arm 51 opposite to the side from which the studs 53 extend, so as to cooperate with one another. notched tie 62 near the end of a slide 63.
The latter is provided with a slot 64 disposed between its ends and adapting to the shaft 56 so as to allow the free movement of the slide relative to the shaft and is connected to pivots at its other end at a connecting rod 65, which in turn is pivotally mounted on a shaft 66 journalled in the main frame of the machine. Between the ends of the connecting rod 65 is formed a slot of unreal shape in which engages a stud 67 fixed to a lever 68 pivotally mounted on a fixed stud 69.
The lever 68 is constantly pulled in the senestrorsum direction, as shown in <U> fi-. </U> 3, by a res out 70 so as to keep a roller 71, carried by said lever, in contact with the periphery a cam 72 mounted on the stud 66 and driven by a gear (not shown) in engagement with the pinion 28 (fig. 1).
The dextrorsal rotation of the cam 72 rotates the lever 68 in the dextrorsal direction, as shown in FIG. 3. This rotation, thanks to the cooperation of the pin 67 with the slot made in the link 65, communicates a dextrorsal rotational movement to the link 65 and a subsequent downward movement of the slide 63, of the arm 51 and of the stop 50 for reverse advancement, against the action of the spring 59.
As shown in fi-. 3, in the rest position of the machine, there is a slight play between the stud .61 and the upper edge of the notched part 62, so as to allow some free movement of the slider 63 before the upper edge of this notched part engages the stud, so that only part of the total downward movement of the slide 63 is transmitted to the stop 50 since it is only desired to move said stop 50 downwards by a small amount . This downward movement is communicated to the stop 50 at about the same time in the cycle where the knife 32 cuts the web 29 so as to give a label 37.
During the separation operation, the web to be printed, under the knife 32, receives a slight downward movement due to the slight downward inclination of the cutting direction. The downward movement of the stopper 50 has approximately the same amplitude as the downward movement of the strip 29 under the action of the knife and is sufficient to prevent the upper edge of the opening 49 which cooperates with the stopper 50 is applied against the stop with sufficient force to damage it.
Note that the edge of the notched portion 62 of the slide 63 also constitutes a stopper serving to limit the movement in the dextrorsum direction of the reverse advance stopper mechanism, as shown in fia. 3, as a result of the cooperation of the stud 61 with this edge.
As a result of the upwardly curved shape of the reverse feed stopper 50, the web 29 passes in front of the stopper without being stopped when it moves upward, but is stopped in its movement if it moves upward. bottom as soon as one of the openings 49 comes into alignment with the stop 50, the upper edge of this opening then engaging said stop.
Therefore, by following the upward movement of the web 29 with sufficient downward movement so that the stopper 50 engages an opening 49 during each cycle of machine operation, the machine is given band a resulting upward advancement movement constituted by the difference between the upward movement and the downward movement, this difference being exactly equal to the distance measured on the belt 29 between adjacent openings 49.
The downward movement is communicated to the belt by rotation in the senestorsum direction of the pressure roller 31 which is driven by a slide 80 (fig. 8) for reverse advancement provided at its upper end with a bearing 81. friction rubber which is intended to cooperate with the roller 31 during the upward movement of the slide 80 so as to impart to this roller the desired rotational movement in the senestrorsal direction. The slide 80, as well as the pad 81 which is associated with it, is pulled so as to engage with the roller 31,
by a spring 82 which is fixed to it by means of an elastic plate 83, the other end of this spring being fixed to a second elastic plate 84 fixed to the lower chute 30 (FIG. 1). A link 85 is pivotally connected to the lower end of slider 80 and, by means of gourons 86 and 87, to a lever 88 pivotally mounted on a pin 89 and having a roller 90 rotatably mounted. one of its ends. A spring 91 connected to the stud 86 pulls the lever 88 in the dextrorsum direction, as shown in figure 8, </B> so as to maintain the roller 90 in elastic contact with the periphery of a cam 92 attached to ar bre 66.
As the shaft 66 and the cam 92 rotate in each cycle in the dextrorsum direction, a substantially vertical upward and then downward feed movement is imparted to the slider 80.
Between the ends of the latter, an edge 93 is arranged so as to cooperate with a stud 94 of an arm 95 of a caliper 96 mounted freely on a shaft 102 supported by the frame of the machine. A roller 98 is mounted on a second arm 97 of the caliper 96. A spring 99 attached to the arm 97 pulls these arms 95 and 97 in the dextrorsum direction as shown in fig. 8, so as to maintain the roller 98 in elastic contact with the periphery of a cam 100 fixed to the shaft 22.
It can be seen that in the normal position of the cam 100 (fig. 8), the slider 80 with the net cushion 81 is retained against the force of the spring 82 by engagement of the stud 94 with the edge 93 in a position in which its vertical movement does not impart any rotational movement to the roller 31.
However, as the cam 100 rotates in the senestorsum direction during each cycle, a shoulder 101 of the cam passes in front of the roller 98 and the arms 95 and 97 thus released can move in the dextrorsum direction, the action of the spring. 99 thus moving the pin 94 from the position in which it prevents the movement in the senestrorsum direction of the slider 80 and allowing the latter, under the action of the spring 82, to assume a position in which the vertical movement of the slider can communicate a rotational movement to the roller 31 by cooperation, with the roller, of the neck sinet 81.
The cam 92 is shaped so that during each cycle the stud 94 is moved away from the locked position before the instant at which the upward movement of the slider 80 begins so that this movement causes the rotation in the shaft. senestrorsum direction of the roller 31 so as to feed the strip 29 again.
The cam 100 is also constituted so that the slide 80 and its associated bushing 81 are moved away from their position of cooperation with the roller 31, by rotation in the senestorsum direction of the arm 95 and cooperation of the stud 94 with the edge 93 of slide 80 before the latter is moved downwards by spring 91 thus returning to its rest position.
The knife 32 (fig. 1) is fixed to a support 110 mounted so as to be able to turn around a shaft 111 disposed between the frames 57 (fig. 6) and 58 (fig. 1). An arm 112 of the knife 32 is attached to the shaft 111. The support 110 can be adjusted to a desired position, relative to the arm 112, by means of an eccentric link 113. A nut 114 serves to secure the arm. eccentric in the adjustment position. An arm 115 is also fixed to the shaft 111 and has at its end a roller (not shown) which is in the path of a cam (not shown) fixed to an auxiliary camshaft 116.
This cam serves to tilt the knife 32 at each operating cycle, first to the right, as shown in fig. 1, in an amount sufficient to allow the advancement of the web 29 by the label feed mechanism past a blade of a stationary knife 117 and into the upper chute 38, as described above. above, then to the left so as to cause the separation of a label from the strip 29. The fixed knife blade 117 is supported at one end in a notch (not shown) of the frame 57 (fig. 6) and at one end. the other end in the frame 58 (fig. 1).
The intermediate chute 33 is fixed to the support 110 and therefore moves at the same time as the knife 32 when the latter is driven by its drive cam.
The two ejector rollers 35 are mounted on a short shaft 118 (FIG. 1), which is mounted on two edges 119 of a part 120 fixed to the upper chute 38. The latter is fixed to the frame 57 and to another frame. (not shown). The two ejector rollers 36 are attached to a shaft 121 carried by the arms of a yoke 122 which pivots around a shaft 123 supported by the frame of the machine.
The bracket 122 is held in the position of FIG. 1, the rollers 36 being held in a position of cooperation with the rollers 35 by means of a spring 124 wound around the shaft 123 and which tends to tilt the caliper 122 in the senestrorsum direction. One end of the spring 124 rests against a stud of the frame and the other end against a roller 126 of an arm 127 extending forwardly of the yoke 122.
At the beginning of each cycle of the machine, a cam 128 mounted on a shaft 129 journaled in the frame of the machine, causes the caliper 122 to tilt in the dextrorsum direction, so as to separate the rollers 36 from the rollers 35, thus allowing the positioning of the strip 29 between these rollers. The cam 128 is used to tilt an arm 130 mounted idle on a stud 131 and disposed below the roller 126. After tilting the arm 130, its upper end engages the roller 126, thus causing the caliper 122 to swing down in the dextrorsum direction. to separate the rollers 36 from the rollers 35. A spring 132 maintains a roller 133 of the arm 130 in elastic contact with the cam 128.
The shaft 129 makes one turn in the dextrorsum direction (fig. 1) under the action of a toothed wheel 136 which is fixed to it and meshes with an idler pinion 134, which in turn meshes with a pinion 135 which meshes with the toothed wheel 27 which drives it.
After positioning of the strip between rollers 35 and 36 and just before the knife 32 separates the label from the strip 29, the cam 128 allows the arm 130 to be tilted to its normal position under the action of the spring. 132, thus allowing the spring 124 to move the rollers 36 and bring them into contact with the rollers 35, so as to tighten the strip 29 strongly. After the rollers 36 have thus been placed in the clamping position, the knife 32 is activated and the label is separated from strip 29.
After this operation, the rollers 36 perform a rapid rotational movement in the senestrorsal direction, thus partially ejecting the necked label from the chute 38. This rapid rotation is obtained by means of a pinion 137 fixed to the spout. shaft 121 and; meshing with a pinion 138 fixed to a pinion its satellite 139, these two pinions being mounted in play on a fixed pin (not shown) axially aligned with the shaft 118.
Pinion 139 meshes with a gear segment 125 which is rotatably mounted on the larger of the sleeves 140 of a telescopic mount supported by a shaft 146 journalled in the frame of the machine. The segment 125 constitutes a single piece with a gear segment 141 which meshes with a segment 142 mounted on the stud 131.
Segment 142 is provided with a roller 143 which is pulled by a spring 145 in resilient contact with a cam 144 attached to the cam <B> 128, </B> therefore rotating in concert with it. The segment 125 switches first in the dextrorsum direction, then in the senestorsum direction, under the action of the cam 144 and the segments 142 and 141. The movement in the dextrorsum direction of the segment 125 takes place when the rollers 36 are separate from the rollers 35 and therefore is a crazy move.
However, the return movement in the senestorsum direction of the segment 125 takes place after bringing the rollers 36 into contact with the rollers 35 and therefore, during this last movement, the rollers 36 also effect a senestrorsum movement by means of the sprockets 137, 138 and 139. As the label was separated from the strip 29 before this last movement of the segment 125, the senestrous movement of the rollers ejects it into a position where it is retained by the finger constituting a slight spring mentioned above and conveniently accessible for removal by the operator.
Means serve to move the rollers 31 and 36 and the stop 50 to an inactive position to allow insertion into the machine or removal of the web to be printed.
A lever 155 (fia. 4) mounted rotatably on the shaft 56, comprises at one end a finger 156 which facilitates manual operation and is also provided with a cam ridge 157 arranged so as to cooperate with a stud 158 fixed in a plate 159 mounted on the frame 58 so as to effect a vertical sliding movement guided by means of slots <B> 160 </B> of said plate, slots which co-operate with a stud 161 and a bolt 162 to head fixed in the frame 58.
An eccentric 163 adjustable on the frame 58 by means of a nut 164 and comprising an adjustment head 165, cooperates with a shoulder of the plate 159 so as to adjustably limit the quantity of downward movements of said plate. The bolt 162 cooperates with the serrated edge of the head 165 to maintain the eccentric 163 in the adjusted position.
An upper edge 166 of plate 159 is arranged to cooperate with a stud 167 attached to an arm 168, which in turn is attached to the outermost of two axially aligned journals 169 forming part of a shaft 170 on which the roller 31 is rotatably mounted. The arm 168 is pulled in the dextrorsum direction as shown in FIGS. 1 and 4 by a spring <B> 171 </B> (fig. 1) fixed to said arm and connected by its other end to the shaft 56.
The shaft 170 is eccentric with respect to these journals 169 which are mounted in the frames 57 and 58. An arm 172 fixed to the journal of the internal end of the shaft 170, cooperates with a stud 173 carried by an arm of an elbow lever 174 rotatably mounted on the <B> 111. </B> A link 175 is pivotally fixed at its lower end to the other arm of the elbow lever 174 and, by its upper end, it is fixed to the arm 127 of the caliper 122 (fig. 1).
A stud 180 fixed between the ends of the lever 155 is arranged so as to engage an arm 181 (fig. 4 and 5) when the lever 155 moves in the dextrorsal direction to the end of its stroke, this stroke being limited by contact. an extension 182 of this lever with the stud 158. The arm 181 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 56 and connected by a sleeve 183 to an arm 184. Two studs 185 and 186 are fixed to the arm 184. A spring 187 connected at the stud 185 and at the plate 84 (fig. 1) pull the arm 184 in the senestrorsum direction, as shown in fig. 5, and normally maintains the stop 50 in elastic contact with the strip 29.
A spring <B> 188 </B> connected to the stud <B> 186 </B> and to a stud 189 carried by the support piece 55 pulls an edge 190 (fig. 3 and 5) of the piece 55 in contact with a portion of the stud 186 which passes through the arm 184 and extends outwardly from the opposite face of this arm.
When the lever 155 turns in the dextror- sum direction as shown in fig. 4, until the end of its travel, the cam ridge 157 of this lever cooperates with the pin 158 of the plate 159 to impart an upward movement to it. This movement is transmitted by the upper edge 166 of the plate 159 to the pin 167 of the arm 168 and turns the latter in the senestorsum direction against the action of the spring 171.
As the roller 31 is mounted on the shaft <B> 170 </B> which, in turn, is eccentric with respect to the journals 169, the senestorsum rotation of the arm 168 causes a rightward movement of the roller 31 (Fig. 4), moving it away from a position in which it would interfere with the feed movement of the strip 29, which takes place upwards through the lower chute 30.
The senestorsum rotation of the arm 168 communicates a corresponding senestorsum rotation to the arm 172 because the latter is fixed to one of the pins 169. This rotation of the arm 172 puts it in contact with the stud 173 of the elbow lever 174 and thus communicates a dextrorsum movement to said crankshaft around shaft 111. The dextrorsum movement of crank lever 174 communicates upward movement to link 175, which in turn communicates dextrorsal rotational movement to caliper 122.
This rotation of the caliper serves to move the rollers 36 which are supported by the caliper on the shaft 121 and to put them out of contact with the rollers 35 so as not to interfere with the feed movement of the caliper. the strip 29 which passes through the upper chute 38.
The dextrorsal rotation of lever 155 also places stud 180 in contact with arm 181 and rotates the latter, sleeve 183 and arm 184, in the dextrorsal direction around shaft 56 against the action of the spring. 187. The spring 188 which connects the arm 184 with the support part 55 obliges the latter to follow the movement of the arm 184 in the dextrorsum direction so as to cause the stop 50 to come out of the chute 30 to allow the supply of the feed. strip 29 upwards through the chute.
The dextrorsal movement of the support piece 55 and of the stop 50 is limited by the contact of the stud 61 with the extreme right edge of the notched portion 62 of the slide 63.
It can therefore be seen that the dextrorsum rotation of the lever 155 brings the roller 31, the rollers 36 and the stop 50 into inactive positions to allow the insertion into the machine, or the removal, of the strip 29.
A mechanism cooperating with the roller 291 (fig. 6) for feeding the strip 29 serves to automatically lock the machine to prevent its operation when the strip is exhausted, so as to inform the operator of this fact, in order to eliminate delays and inconveniences due to the absence of the tape.
The strip 29 (Figs. 6 and 7) is wound into a relatively large roll 291 over a core 195 of compressed paper or wood and having a central lever fitted around the circumference of a sleeve 196 rotatably supported by a stud 197 attached. to the frame 57. Diametrically opposed teeth (not shown) projecting around the circumference of the sleeve 196 work their way into the bore of the core 195 as the feed roller is pushed onto the sleeve, so as to secure to the core. forces these parts together to allow them to rotate together.
A spring (not shown) wound around stud 197 and co-operating with an enlarged portion of the bore of sleeve 196, creates frictional traction between stud and sleeve to prevent further movement of roller 291 as the web 29 is unrolled. A disc 198 of large dimensions, freely supported by the stud 197 between the external face of the frame 57 and the internal end of the sleeve 196, cooperates with the internal surface of the feed roller 291 to provide it with a base support. .
The periphery of the feed roller 291 (fig. 6) is elastically engaged by a feeler roller 199 rotatably mounted on a stud 200 at the lower end of a feeler arm 201 integral with a lever 202 by a sleeve 203 supported. rotatably on a gou-on 204 fixed to the frame 19.
A spring 205, one end of which is fixed and the other connected to the lever 202, pulls the lever and the feeler arm 201 in the dextrorsum direction around the stud 204 (fig. 6), so as to normally keep the roller 199 in contact. elastic with the periphery of the supply roller 291. The upper arm of the lever 202 carries a pin 206 which cooperates with a control edge 207 of a control arm 208 fixedly connected by a journal 209 to a lever 210, the journal being rotatably supported by a stud 211 fixed to the frame 19. An extension of the control edge 207 is formed by part of a pawl 212 freely mounted on a stud of the arm 208.
A spring <B> 213 </B> pulls the pawl 212 in the senestorsum direction (Fig. 6) to normally maintain a polished edge of an upward extension of the pawl in contact with a stop pin 214 of the arm 208. .
As the quantity of the strip 29 and the diameter of the feed roller 291 decrease, the periphery of said roller, cooperating with the roller 199, allows the spring 205 to gradually move the arm 201 and the lever 202 in the x direction. - trorsum.
The movement in the dextrorsum direction of the vier 202 causes the descent of the stud 206 on the control edge 207 and finally on the pro length of this edge formed by the pawl 212. When the strip 29 is practically exhausted the stud 206 leaves the end 215 (fig. 6) of the pawl 212,
thus releasing the arm 208 and the lever 210 and allowing the action of a spring 216 which immediately causes them to swing in the dextrorsum direction until a stop ridge 217 of the arm 208 comes into contact with the stud 206 of so as to limit this dextrorsal movement. The dextrorsal movement of the lever 210 displaces an ear 218 formed on its extension and brings it onto the path of a notch 219 (FIG. 7) of the clutch control lever 17,
so as to block the se- nestrorsum triggering movement of the lever and thus to prevent the operation of the machine after almost complete exhaustion of the tape for labeling.
In order to remove the core 195 from the sleeve 196 and install a new feed roller 291 therein, the arm 201 can be removed by hand and brought to the inactive position on the outside, as indicated by the dashed lines relating to the roll 199 of the fi. 6. During this movement, the lever 202 is returned in the senestorsum direction to its initial position, the stud 206 escapes the shoulder 215 formed on the pawl 212 and moves on an inclined surface formed between the stopper edge. 217 and the control edge 207 of the arm 208.
As the arm 201 moves to its extreme position in the senestorsum direction, the stud 206 moves away from the ridge 207 and engages in a depression thus allowing the spring 216 again to swing the lever 210 and the arm 208 in the dextrorsum direction to move the ear 218 again and bring it into the path of the notch 219 so as to prevent the release movement of the clutch control lever 17.
The shoulder is formed by the depression formed at the internal end of the control edge 207, cooperating with the stud 206, maintains the lever 202 and the arm 201 in their inactive position against the action of the spring 205, so that the core 195 of the spent feed roller 291 can be conveniently removed from the sleeve 196 and a new feed roller can be inserted therein without interference from the arm 201 and the roller 199. A platen. 220 fixed to the upper end of the lever 210 (Figs. 6 and 7) has an upward extension which cooperates with the internal surface of the frame 57 so as to maintain a suitable lateral spacing between the lever 210 and the frame.
An extension 221 to the rear or to the right of the lever 210 (fig. 6) constitutes a finger by means of which the lever can be tilted in the senestorsum direction against the action of the spring 216, so as to release the shoulder formed by the depressions formed at the internal termination of the control edge 207 of the <B>, </B> gou; on 206 and to release the lever 202 and the arm 201 to allow the action of the spring 205 which immediately restores this arm to its initial position by a dextrorsal movement, which brings the roller 199 into elastic contact with the periphery of the new supply roller 291.
This reestablishment of the arm 201 places the lever 202 in position as shown in FIG. 6, so that the stud 206 by cooperating with the control edge 207 keeps the lug 218 out of the path of the notch <B> 219 </B> (see also fig. 7) so as not to not interfere with the normal operation of the machine.
The new web to be printed is directed upward from feed roller 291, as shown by the phantom lines in Fig. 6, through the guide channel 30, to the feed, print and separation mechanisms, as explained above.
Each time it is desired to insert a new supply roller 291 to replace an exhausted roller, the lever 155 (fig. 4) is grasped by its finger 156 to make it turn in the dextror- sum direction to the limit. of its race. As explained above, this movement moves the rollers 31 and 36 and the stop 50 and causes them to come out of their operating position so as not to prevent the movement of the strip 29.
Likewise, the arm 201 (fig. 6) is grasped and moved in the senestrorsum direction until the roller 199 assumes the position shown in phantom in fig. 6, so that the roller 199 is held in a position in which it does not interfere with the removal or replacement of the feed roller 291, by engaging the stud 206 in the depression adjacent to the ridge 207 of the arm 208.
It is evident that, as a result of the above movements of lever 155 and arm 201, all parts of the mechanism which might normally interfere with the removal and replacement of feed roller 291, are moved to at positions in which this interference is not possible.
Any part of the strip 29 which may remain in the chutes 30 and 33 is then removed by rotating the roller 291 in the dextrorsum direction, as shown in fig. 6, around a stud 197. This roller 291 is then removed from the sleeve 196 and a new roller is placed therein. The extension 221 of the lever 210 is then moved upwards which releases the stud 206 from the depression of the control arm 208 and allows the spring 205 to tilt the arm 201 so as to bring the roller 199 into contact with the periphery of the new one. feed roller 291.
The free end of the strip of the new roller 291 is passed upwards through the chutes 30, 33 and 38, and outwards through an opening in the machine case as shown in fig. 2, until one of the openings 49 of the strip 29 is aligned with a locating pin 222 (Fig. 2) attached to the exterior surface of the machine chest. This opening 49 is then placed on the stud 222 so as to position the strip 29 with respect to the printing, feeding and label separation mechanisms, the roller 291 being held so as to ensure the tension of the label. strip 29 between roller and stud 222.
The lever 155 is then moved in the senestrorsal direction to bring the rollers 31 and 36 into active relation with their respective corresponding parts 20 and 35 and to bring the stop 50 into one of the openings <I> 49 of < / I> the strip 29, this opening being aligned with the stop 50 following the establishment of another of the openings on the pin 222, as mentioned above.
The machine is then ready to operate and is started by composing the data to be printed and by lowering the trigger bar, as previously indicated.
Note that the first machine operation after replacing roller 291 will give a length of label material 3-4 times the length of a label, due to the amount of material extending between an opposite point. knife 32 and dowel 222.
It will be noted, in addition, that on the label é; ected of the machine during this first operation which follows the replacement of a supply roller, the data established on the printing cylinder 20 does not appear from the fact that the part of the strip of which the label produced during this operation will be composed will be placed above the cylinder 20 during the initial positioning of said strip and that there will therefore be no chance that this data is printed there. This may also be true for the second label printed after replacing the feed cylinder, depending on the position on the label of the data to be printed.
Each time the machine is operated with an advancement of the belt 29 suitably positioned, the following operations take place. The printing cylinder 20 first rotates in the senestrorsal direction as shown in FIG. 1, causing the printing of data composed therein on the strip 29 and simultaneously causing the upward displacement of said strip by the action of the feed edges of the cylinder co-operating with the roller 31.
The slider 80 (fig. 8) is then put into the active position with respect to the roller 31 so as to impart the appropriate reverse advancement movement to the strip 29 for its exact positioning, after which the knife 32 is tilted in. the sense senestrorsum as shown in fig. 1, so as to separate a label 37 from the strip 29.
The separate label is held in place by rollers 35 and 36, while hammer 34 is applied to it to print data composed by the weight and price control keys and by unit price controls and equal. ment while the pad 43 bearing the name of the contents of the package is applied to it during a stop in the ejection movement effected by the rollers 35 and 36 by means of the printing unit 44. The rollers 35 and 36 then eject the label 37 and bring it into a position from which the operator can grip it.
