Description

Process for preparing a vulcanizable elastomeric condensation product
The present invention relates to the preparation of vulcanizable polyurethane-urea elastomers, containing the residues of high molecular weight glycols. It relates to a process in which such elastomers are formed by the reaction of high molecular weight bischloroformates with phosgene and primary diamines.

In patent No. 347005, filed June 30, 1954, elastomeric products formed by the reaction of a high molecular weight polyalkylene ether glycol with an organic diisocyanate and a chain extension agent such as than water or an organic diamine. During the preparation of these products, urethane groups, -NHCOO- are formed by reaction between them. hydroxyl groups of polyalkylene ether glycol and isocyanate groups, while urea groups,
NH-CO-NH, are formed by reactions of isocyanates with water or a diamine.

The resulting polymer product therefore contains a plurality of urethane and urea groups as well as the residues of the polyalkyl-ether-glycol. These polymers are high value products, which can be vulcanized to provide elastomers possessing extraordinary abrasion resistance and a great ability to withstand low temperatures without becoming brittle.

In Angewandte Chemie 62, 57 (1950), it is spoken of elastomers prepared by the reaction of polyesters having terminal hydroxyl groups, with organic diisocyanates, followed by a reaction with water.

Although these products have excellent properties, they are relatively expensive, since the isocyanates required as raw materials for this process are themselves expensive compounds. In addition, it is necessary to employ high power mixing devices for the preparation of these products.

The high reactivity of isocyanates makes it necessary to control the proportions of the ingredients very carefully in order to obtain the desired products. If there is an excess of isocyanate in the resulting elastomer, the product becomes self-vulcanizing and cannot be stored for an appreciable time before forming a composition and vulcanizing, without vulcanization occurring. premature and unwanted.

The aim of this invention is to avoid, at least in part, the drawbacks of the methods recalled above.

The process according to the present invention is characterized in that one reacts, with stirring, in an aqueous medium and in the presence of an acid acceptor, an organic bis-chloroformate having a molecular weight of at least 875, a primary diamine and phosgene, the molecular ratio of bis-chloroformate to phosgene being 1: 0.15 to 1: 20, and the ratio of the molecules of diamine to the sum of the molecules of bis-chloroformate and phosgene, being from 0.3: 1 to 2: 1.

In a preferred way of carrying out the process according to the invention, a mixture of one mole of polytetramethylene-ether bis-chloroformate, having a molecular weight of at least 875, and of 0.15 to 10 moles of phosgene, in a vigorously stirred aqueous medium, containing 2,4-toluylenediamine, an acid acceptor, such as sodium hydroxide, and an acid-stable emulsifying agent, such as sodium sulfate of higher alcohol. From 0.5 to 2.0 moles of the diamine are employed for each mole of phosgene and bis chloroformate. The condensation polymer which forms is insoluble in water.

When the reaction is complete, the product is separated from the reaction medium, washed and dried, and it is then ready for the formation of the composition and the vulcanization with a view to obtaining the vulcanized elastomer.

The bis-chloroformates which can be used in the process according to this invention are compounds corresponding to the formula Cl-COO-X-OCO-Cl, in which
X is a divalent organic radical whose weight corresponding to the formula is at least 716. They are prepared by reacting glycols (of formula
HOXOH) of high molecular weight, with phosgene. The bis-chloroformates which can be used have average molecular weights of at least 875, which can be up to 10,000, with molecular weights of 875 to 3,500 being preferred. The molecular weights cited in the present patent are average values.

A preferred class of high molecular weight bis-chloroformates are polyalkylene ethers bis-chloroformates. These compounds correspond to the formula C1-COO (RO) "COCI, in which R represents an alkylene radical, and n is an integer sufficiently large for the compound to have a molecular weight of at least 875, which corresponds to a polyalkylene ether glycol having a molecular weight of at least 750. The alkylene radical R preferably contains no more than about 10 to 12 carbon atoms It is not necessary that all alkylene radicals be the same.

The preferred polyalkylene ether bis-chloroformate is poly-tetramethylene ether bis-chloroformate, also known as polybutylene ether bis-chloroformate. This product is obtained by reacting phosgene with polytetramethylene ether glycol, which can be formed by polymerization of tetrahydrofuran. Other typical representatives of this class are polyethylene-ether bis-chloroformate, polypropylene-ether bis-chloroformate, bis-chloroformate.

   of 1,2-polvdimethylethylene-ether and polydecamethylene-ether bis-chloroformate.

Instead of the hydrocarbon part of the polyether bis-chloroformates being entirely alkylenic, the compound may contain arylene or cycloalkylene residues associated with alkylene radicals, as for example in the bis-chloroformate obtained by reacting carbon dioxide. phosgene with a condensation product of a polyalkylene-ether-glvcol with a, a .'-dibromo-p-xYlene in the presence of an alkali.

In such products, the cyclic groups contained in the polyether chain are preferably phenylene, naphthylene or cyclohexylene radicals or such radicals containing alkyl or alkylene substituents, such as tolylene, phenylethylene or xylylene radicals. Elastomers prepared using bis-chloroformates of polyalkylene-arylene-ethers or polyalkylene-cycloalkylene-ethers have superior freeze resistance than corresponding elastomers not containing cyclic radicals.

Another class of bis-chloroformates which can be used in the present invention is that of the bis-chloroformates of polyethers-polythioethers obtained by reacting phosgene with a long-chain diol containing a plurality of sulfur and oxygen atoms. intraline. Such diols can be represented by the formula HO (QY) nH, in which Q represents hydrocarbon radicals, at least some of which are alkylene, Y represents chalcogen atoms, some of which are sulfur and the remainder , oxygen,

and n is an integer large enough that the diol has a molecular weight of at least 750. These diols can be formed by condensing glycols and thioglycols together in the presence of a catalyst such as p-toluene acid. sulfonic.

Another class of bis-chloroformates which can be used is that of the polyester bis-chloroformates prepared by the action of excess phosgene on linear polyesters having terminal hydroxyl groups. These linear polyesters are prepared by reacting dibasic acids such as succinic, maleic, glutaric, malonic, isophthalic, adipic, azelaic, sebacic, hexa hydroterephthalic, p-phenylene-diacetic, and the like, with glycols such as ethylene-, propylene-1, 2-, propylene-1, 3-, diethylene-, butylene-, hexamethylene,

-decamethylene glycol, thiodiglycol and the like. In general, a slight excess of the glycol is employed to ensure the presence of end hydroxyl groups in the polyester.

A preferred polyester bis-chloroformate is that obtained starting from a polyester formed by condensation of adipic acid with at least one glycol, such as butanediol-1, 4 or a mixture of ethylene glycol and propylene glycol.

It is also possible, in the process according to the invention, to use, as bis-chloroformates, products obtained by reacting an excess of phosgene with a long-chain compound having, at each end, a functional group ending in a hydroxyl group, said functional groups being linked by a hydrocarbon chain or a hydrocarbon chain substituted by a halogen. These functional groups at the ends of long chain compounds can be hydroxyl, carboxyl or sulfo radicals; they are preferably hydroxyl radicals. The hydrocarbon chain connecting these functional groups is free from substituents other than halogen atoms or monovalent hydrocarbon radicals, such as methyl, phenyl, etc. preferably containing no more than 8 carbon atoms.

Such long chain compounds are obtained, for example, by polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of free radical catalysts such as aliphatic azo-dinitriles or dicarboxylates. The most suitable ethylenically unsaturated monomers are conjugated dienes such as butadiene, isoprene, 2-chlorobutadiene and the like. Mixtures can be used. For example styrene or isobutylene can be copolymerized with a diene to obtain the long chain backbone.

The carbon chain in the long chain compound can be saturated or unsaturated.

The primary diamine which takes part in the reaction can be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, or aromatic; aromatic diamines are preferred. Particularly useful diamines are toluylenediamines, phenylenediamines, alkylenediamines such as ethylenediamine, tetramethyldiamine and decamethylenediamine, as well as cyclic diamines such as cyclohexyldiamine. Mixed types, such as 4, 4'-methylene-bis- (phenylamine) and heterocyclic diamines, such as diaminopyridines can also be employed. Amine halogen hydrates can also be used instead of diamines, many of which are quite insoluble in water.

When a diamine molecule reacts with a bis-chloroformate molecule, a urethane group is formed, according to the following reaction:
NH2-R'-NH @ + ClCOO- (X) -OCOCl #
 NH2-R'-NHCOO- (X) -OCOCl + HCl
The reaction of a phosgene molecule with two molecules of the diamine produces a urea group, as shown below:
NH., - R'-NH. + COCL + NH.-R'-NH .--- #
 NH.-R'-NHCONH-R'-NHg + 2ClH
The condensation product resulting from the process according to this invention therefore contains a plurality of urethane groups and urea groups. linking together the long chain divalent residues from the bis-chloroformate and the divalent residues from the diamine.

The properties of the condensation product will depend to a considerable degree on the relative proportions of the urea and urethane linkages, since the hydrogens present in the urea groups are considered to be appreciably more reactive than those present in the urethane groups, and they are active points where cross-linkages can occur during the subsequent vulcanization of the reaction product. When less than 0.15 moles of phosgene are employed for each mole of bis-chloroformate, too few urea groups are formed in the condensation product to ensure easy vulcanization.

When the molecular ratio; of bis-chloroormate phosgene exceeds 10: 1, the condensation product contains a lot of urea groups, and after vulcanization, it has a high modulus, that is, it is rigid. If this ratio exceeds 20: 1, the modulus becomes so high that the product can no longer be used as an elastomer. Preferably, 0.7 to 3 moles of phosgene are employed for each mole of bis-chloroformate. Products prepared using these proportions can be easily milled and have, after vulcanization, desirable resilience and modulus.

The amount of diamine to be employed is generally equal to or somewhat greater than the equivalent amount required for the reaction with the bis-chloroformate and phosgene, although 30 to 200 ouzo of this amount may be employed. . If there is not enough of the diamine to react with all of the -COC1 groups, those of these unreacted groups hydrolyze to give free hydroxyl or carboxyl groups. An excess of the diamine results in the presence of free amino groups in the condensation product. A large excess acts as a damping agent, effectively saturating all -COC1 groups and preventing further condensation.

Preferably, the diamine is employed in the proportion of about 100 to 130 ouzo of the stoichiometric amount.

Although the reaction can be carried out by simultaneously bringing the three ingredients together, it is generally preferable to add a mixture of the bis-chloroformate and phosgene to an aqueous medium containing the diamine in suspension or solution. In this way, the reaction of each of the other two reactants with the diamine proceeds concurrently and results in condensation products containing the randomly distributed urea and urethane groups. It is sometimes desirable for convenience that the mixture of bis-chloroformate and phosgene be dissolved in a solvent. The use of a solvent is indicated when it is necessary to have a fluid mixture which is easy to handle and which can be easily mixed with the suspension or solution of the diamine.

As the solvent, any normally unreactive substance can be employed, and preferably a hydrocarbon such as toluene, xylene, benzene or the like is used. A relatively volatile solvent, eg boiling below 120-130 ° C is preferred because of the ease with which it can be removed from the resulting condensation product.

Bis-chloroformate which has been prepared by reacting phosgene with a high molecular weight glycol frequently contains an excess of phosgene, and it is then only necessary to adjust the quantity of phosgene to the desired proportions, either by removing it or by adding. If the bis-chloroformate is completely phosgene-free, it is necessary to add all the required amount.

The amount of water employed as the reaction medium is not critical; it is desirable to employ solutions or suspensions dilute enough to make possible good mixing and intimate contact of the reactants without excessive consumption of energy.

The suspension or aqueous solution is preferably maintained at a temperature between the freezing point and about 300 C. There is a tendency at high temperatures for the bis-chloroformate to hydrolyze and undesirable side reactions to occur.

The aqueous reaction medium should contain sufficient acid acceptor to react with hydrochloric acid formed by the reaction of the diamine with, bis-chloroformate and phosgene.

Among the suitable acid acceptors are the alkali metal hydroxides, such as sodium hydroxide, and buffer salts such as the alkali metal salts with weak acids, for example sodium acetate. sodium, sodium borate and the like. These compounds can be added to the reaction mixture either before or after the bis-chloroformate and phosgene have been mixed with the diamine. The µg of the reaction mixture is preferably maintained between about 3 and about 9, although the reaction can also be carried out at a µg as high as 11.

In order to obtain a. adequate contact between the reagents, it is desirable that an emulsifying agent which is acid stable and does not react with bis-chloroformate, phosgene and amine be present. Suitable emulsifying agents are surface-active substances containing sulphate, sulphonate or phosphate solubilizing groups, such as long-chain alkyl and sodium sulphates or phosphates, sodium alkyl or aryl sulphonates,. lignin. are sulfonates, and condensation products with ethylene oxide of long chain alcohols or fatty acids.

Sodium dodecyl sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, dodecyl benzene sulfonate, and the reaction product of 16 to 20 moles of ethylene oxide with 1 mole of cetyl or oleyl alcohol are agents typical emulsifiers suitable for this purpose. Partially desulfonated sodium lignin sulfonate, for example the Marasperse CB brand product from Marathon Chemical Corp., is an emulsifying agent which is particularly suitable for these purposes.

If there is no emulsifying agent, it is difficult to assure sufficient contact between the various reagents and proper dispersion of the condensation product. An emulsifying agent can, however, be dispensed with if vigorous and vigorous agitation is provided.

Thus, when the bis-chloroformate and phosgene are added as a solution in toluene, a high speed stirrer produces a very satisfactory dispersion. The rate of addition of the bis-chloroformate and phosgene to the aqueous suspension or solution of the diamine should be low enough so that sufficient mixing can take place.

As the condensation reaction proceeds, the reaction product separates from the aqueous suspension in which it originates as a more or less loose elastomeric mass.

This mass is separated from the aqueous medium, for example simply by lifting it out of this medium, and placed on an ordinary rubber washing mill. This type of mill, which is customary in the rubber industry, comprises at least one streak roller opposed to another roller. The condensation product is crushed between the two rollers and water is added to remove the impurities soluble in it. Water. When the product has become substantially neutral, it is transferred to a conventional smooth drying mill and ground at 100-110 C until dry.

The resulting elastomeric product can then be combined with a vulcanizing agent, usually a diisocyanate, and vulcanized by heating. The diisocyanate vulcanizing agent reacts with the condensation product at points where active hydrogens are present, particularly as urea groups, and produces a crosslinked structure. Ordinarily, 1 to 20 parts by weight of a diisocyanate such as 2,4-toluylene-diisocyanate, 2,4-toluylene-diisocyanate dimer, bis (3-isocyanato-4-methylphenyl) urea or the like are employed. Vulcanization is often facilitated by the incorporation of a small amount of magnesium oxide with the diisocyanate, a vulcanizing agent.

Carbon black, silica, metal oxides, plasticizers or other agents commonly employed in the rubber industry can also be added at this time. The vulcanizing agents and other substances to form the composition are mixed with the polymer by grinding on a smooth rubber mill, and the elastomer thus composed is then vulcanized by heating at 100-150 C under sufficient pressure to cause the elastomer to set. the shape of the mold.

Ordinary rubber processing apparatuses are satisfactory for this. The vulcanization time varies from about fifteen minutes to several hours depending on the temperature, with lower temperatures requiring longer vulcanization times.

The process according to the invention is illustrated with the aid of the following examples, in which the parts are indicated by weight, unless otherwise specified. Indications are also given as to the preparation of the starting bis-chloroformate and to the vulcanization of the polymers obtained.

   Example 1
Polytetramethylene ether bis-chloroformate was prepared beforehand as follows:
A solution of 226 parts of polytetramethylene ether glycol, having an average molecular weight of 2910, in 113 parts of toluene, is added slowly and with stirring, to a solution of 24.5 parts of phosgene in 114 parts of toluene. , at 4-80C. After all of the solution has been added, stirring 4-80 C is continued for 1.5 hour.

The conversion to bis-chloroformate is believed to be 100%.

The average molecular weight of bis-chloroformate can be calculated as follows:
During the condensation reaction of polytetramethylene-ether-glycol of average molecular weight equal to 2910 with phosgene, the 2 hydrogen atoms of the 2 OH groups of polytetramethylene-ether-glycol are replaced by two COCI residues. , with a total molecular weight equal to 127.

The average molecular weight of bis-chloroformate is therefore equal in round numbers to 2910-2 + 127 = 3035
450 parts of the bis-chloroformate solution prepared as above and formed from 221 parts of polytetramethylene-ether bis-chloroformate, 8.6 parts of phosgene, 5.33 parts of hydrochloric acid and 215 parts of toluene, are Slowly added over a period of 36 minutes at 10-11 C to a stirred solution containing 20.1 parts of 2,4-toluylenediamine, 20.8 parts of sodium hydroxide, 2.5 parts of Duponol ME, a sodium alkyl sulphate in which the alkyl is derived from a mixture of normal alcohols,

in which dodecyl and tetradecyl alcohols predominate with smaller amounts of decyl and hexadecyl alcohols, and 2000 parts of water. The resulting suspension is stirred for 12 minutes at 10-150C, then for 5 minutes at 200C, and then allowed to stand overnight at room temperature. During this time, a mass of the elastic polymer separates. This polymer is removed, washed with water on a ridged rubber mill and then dried on a smooth rubber mill, at 105-110 C.

The bis-chloroformate / phosgene molecular ratio can be calculated as follows:
 Number of parts of bis-chloroformate = 221
 Average molecular weight of bis-chloroformate. = 3035
Number of parts of phosgene. = 8, 6
 Molecular weight of phosgene. ... .... = 99
 221/3035 Bis-chloroformate / phosgene ratio = = 0.84
 8.6 / 99
The diamine / bis-chloroformate + phosene molecular ratio can be calculated as follows:

Number of parts of tluylenediarnine. -20, 1
Rounded molecular weight of toluylenediamine. = 122
 Diamine ratio 20, 1/122 ¯ 103
 bis-chloroformate + phosgene 221/3035 + 8, 6/99
100 parts of this polymer are ground on a rubber mill with 8 parts of 2,4-toluylènediisocyanate dimer and 3 parts of MgO until a homogeneous mixture is formed. A portion is then placed in a mold and vulcanized under pressure for 18 hours at 700 C.

Similar elastomers are prepared by operating in essentially the same manner with the same ingredients as described above, but varying the molecular ratio of bis-chloroformate to phosgene. The properties of the resulting vulcanized rubbery polymers are as follows:

 Sample 1 2 3 4
 Bis-chloroformate to phosgene ratio. 1/1, 19 1/2, 0 1/8, 46 1/19, 05
 Tensile force at break, kg / cm2 .. 150 269 312 234
 Modulus at 300/0 elongation, kg / cm2 29 71, 4 176 234
Elongation at break, zozo 670 650 460 300 (In the preparation of sample 2, sodium acetate was used instead of sodium hydroxide as an acceptor, and N, N'-bis ( 3-isocyanato-4-methylphenyl) -urea instead of 2, 4-toluyl-enediisocyanate dimer as vulcanizing agent).

Other vulcanized elastomers are prepared by operating essentially in the manner described above, but by using sodium carbonate, respectively a mixture of sodium hydroxide and boric acid, as acid acceptors, instead of sodium hydroxide.

   Example 2
 A. Bis-chloroformate of a 3500 average molecular weight polytetramethyl ene-ether-glycal was prepared as follows: 200 parts of the molten glycol are slowly added to about 80 parts of liquid phosgene, while stirring, under a condenser at reflux. Instead of using a single diamine and a single bis-chloroformate in the preparation of the products according to the invention, it is possible to use mixtures of two or more of each of these two compounds.

The elastomers prepared by the process according to the present invention can be used for the preparation of sheets, tubes, bars, or other molded articles, pneumatic or solid tires, or parts thereof, inner tubes, belts which can be simple, laminated or reinforced, of pipes, mechanical parts, wraps of wires or cables, shoes, coated fabrics, films, coating compositions, adhesives, cellular products, and for all other applications for which other elastomers are suitable.

It is possible, by the process according to the invention, to prepare products substantially identical to the products prepared by reacting the corresponding long chain glycol, an organic diisocyanate and water in the appropriate molecular proportions. The process according to the invention is advantageous in that the high molecular weight bis-chloroformates are more easily prepared from the corresponding glycols than are the diisocyanates from the corresponding diamines, so that the raw materials for the present process are less expensive.

The process according to the invention is also advantageous in that it can be carried out by employing liquid aqueous sludges which can be easily stirred, while the formation of the same products by direct reaction between a long chain glycol, a diiso cyanate and a chain extender requires heavy duty mixing equipment.
