Description

Die Rollen 16 der Druckwerke<I>A</I> und<I>B</I> sind nicht in Tätigkeit.

Method for guiding a continuous metal web through a multicolor printing machine, and machine for carrying out the process It is known to continuously produce multicolor prints on paper or textile webs. For this purpose, multicolor printing machines are used with several successive printing units. The paper or textile web is continuously guided one after the other through the printing units and printed with a monochrome partial pattern in each printing unit.

The superimposed individual single-color prints result in the desired multi-color print. Attempts have been made to use this method, for example in the canning industry for the continuous production of multicolor prints on sheet metal webs, preferably aluminum webs, for the production of Kon serven cans or similar sheet metal containers. However, this results in the following difficulties: 1. For the production of cans or similar containers, sheet metal with a thickness of over 0.1 mm is normally used. Sheets with such a thickness are made in rolling mills ago. The tensions resulting from the rolling are unevenly distributed over the surface of the finished metal web.

Because of these latent tensions, such a metal web tends to warp itself during continuous execution through the individual printing units of a multicolor printing machine. This makes the required correct superimposition of the partial prints made in the individual successive printing units impossible.

  2. Since the color material printed on the continuously moving metal web in each printing unit cannot be absorbed by the web, special measures must be taken to dry the dye between two consecutive printing units. The dye is preferably dried in that the web is guided over heating rollers on its way from one printing unit to the next printing unit. When using certain printing dyes, however, such heating rollers can be omitted, provided that the volatile substances contained in the dye are given the opportunity to evaporate before the part of the metal web on which a pattern has been printed in one printing unit enters the next printing unit.

In both cases, however, the drying of the dye inevitably leads to temperature fluctuations, which impair the correct advance of the web through the successive printing units and cause longitudinal and transverse shifts of the web in relation to the printing rollers in the subsequent printing units. Because of these shifts, it is impossible to achieve a correct overlay of the partial prints of the multi-color printing produced one after the other.

These difficulties do not arise in the production of multicolor prints on continuous paper or textile tapes, since the porous paper or textile material can absorb the dye, and because paper and textile webs do not have any material tensions which would impair the advance of the web.

The displacements of the metal web both in the longitudinal direction and transversely to this are, as already mentioned, partly due to the temperature fluctuations at the various points of the metal web, which occur due to the heating of the web for the purpose of drying the paint and due to the subsequent cooling. The resulting alternating expansion and contraction of the web leads to distortions and skewing of the web on its way through the printing units.

For the reasons given above, it has been practically impossible to use the known method for the continuous production of multicolor prints on paper or textile tapes for continuous production of multicolor prints on metal webs, which is why multicolor prints on metal sheets for tin cans or similar Be containers so far individual metal plates must be produced separately.

Although this procedure leads to entirely satisfactory results with regard to multicolor printing, such a procedure causes a considerable waste of material, since the edges of each plate have to be trimmed for the production of Kon servenbüchsen or other containers. If the print pattern has a square or rectangular contour, the loss of material can be kept to a minimum by making the cut close to the edge of the print. In the case of print patterns with a round or irregular contour or in the case of patterns which completely fill the available surface of the sheet metal plate, however, it is inevitable that a number of these patterns will be cut through, which leads to a considerable loss of material.

It is therefore economically desirable to be able to produce multi-color prints to avoid material losses and to speed up printing on continuous metal webs.

The invention has the purpose of specifying a method in which a continuous metal web is guided through a multicolor printing machine consisting of at least two successive printing units in such a way that the defects mentioned do not occur.

This is achieved according to the invention in that the metal web is first passed through a perforation device, which provides the web with continuous rows of holes lying alongside the web side edges, then by means of toothed rollers provided in front of and behind a pressure roller through the first printing unit, the web through the teeth engaging in the holes are routed tightly over the printing roller and, after leaving the first printing unit, are guided over guide rollers which are arranged between the successive printing units in such a way that the web forms a loosely hanging loop on the path between two adjacent printing units,

in which all possible material stresses in the metal web are compensated. After leaving the last printing unit, the printed web is expediently rolled up onto a drum provided at the rear end of the printing machine.

In order to ensure that the metal web is introduced into the various printing units in the same heat state, the web can be cooled to a predetermined temperature before it is introduced into each individual printing unit. This avoids those shifts and mutual displacements of the individual print patterns that are unavoidable when the metal web in all printing units has the same temperature or the same temperature fluctuations is set from.

If printing inks are used that require accelerated artificial drying of the ink printed on the web, the metal web can be heated after each print to dry the printing ink.

The invention further relates to a multicolor printing machine for carrying out the method, which, with at least two successive ones, each contain a pressure roller and a pressure roller resting against this.

The printing machine is characterized by the fact that in each printing unit two toothed rollers, each in front of and behind the printing roller, are arranged in front of and behind the printing roller for taut feed of the web over the printing roller, and that in front of the printing unit there is a perforation device and each Weil before and after each printing unit several guide rollers are provided, at least some of which are stored in such a way that the continuous Me tallbahn forms a loosely hanging loop at least on the routes between two neighboring printing units.

In order to carry out the aforementioned cooling of the metal web before it is introduced into each printing unit, at least one of the guide rollers delimiting the loose loop can be provided with a cooling device which keeps the roller at a predetermined temperature. Finally, each printing unit can contain a drying roller lying above the printing roller, with ribs running in the longitudinal direction of the rollers, which are designed in such a way that the web guided around the drying roller is held back a piece by the roller periphery itself. Here, the drying roller can be heated by suitable means. The air gap between the metal web and the heating roller surface facilitates the evaporation of moisture from the fresh printing ink.

The invention is described below with reference to the drawing, for example. 1 shows a schematic side view of a multicolor printing machine according to the invention with three printing units, and FIG. 2 shows a section along the line 11-1l in FIG.

The multi-color printing machine according to the invention shown in FIG. 1 consists essentially of a machine frame 1, three printing units A, B and C, a feed device D arranged in the feed direction in front of the first printing unit and a reeling device located behind the last printing unit E. The continuous conveyance of a metal web <B> 1.0 </B> through the machine is controlled as follows: The web 10 is drawn off from a supply drum 2 and passed over two feed rollers 4, one of which is ended in the indicated by the arrow Direction is driven. From the feed rollers, the web arrives at a location at the output of the feed device D, per se known perforation device 5 of suitable construction.

In the perforation device, the web 10 is provided with rows of holes lying alongside the web side edges and running continuously. The web is then guided in a loop IODA to the first printing unit <I> A </I>.

The printing units <I> A, B </I> and C are identical and each contain a pressure roller 6 and a roller 7 which rests against the pressure roller from above and presses the web firmly against the pressure roller 6. In each printing unit two toothed rollers 8 and 9 lying in front of and behind the printing roller are also provided in the feed direction of the web, the teeth of which engage the holes in the web and lead the web taut over the printing roll. Above the printing roller, a drying roller 20 which can be heated by conventional suitable means is stored in each printing unit. The roller 20 can carry ribs 21 or corresponding organs extending in the longitudinal direction of the roller, so that an air gap remains between the periphery of the drying roller and the web guided over the roller.

Finally, each printing unit has the following guide rollers, some of which are driven in the direction indicated by arrows: a front feed roller 11, an output roller 12 also located on the front side of the printing unit, a front upper deflection roller 13, a rear one upper pulley 14, one on the back side of each printing unit lying feed roller 15 and a rear output roller 16. The rollers 11 and 15 are mounted on pivotable arms from the green mentioned in more detail below.

Before the device E is provided with two of the feed rollers of the device D corresponding feed rollers 4 and one at the rear end of the machine are the drum 3 for rolling up the printed with the multi-color tape.

The multi-color printing machine shown schematically in FIG. 1 operates as follows: The metal strip withdrawn from the supply drum 2 and fed to the printing units by means of the feed device D is when it enters the printing units <I> A </I> and <I> B < / I> over the feed rollers 11, then from below around the toothed roller 8, through between the pressure roller 6 and the roller 7 and from there from below around the toothed roller 9, then over the drying roller 20, from below around the output roller 12 and finally over the upper pulleys 13 and 14 out.

The part of the metal strip that runs between the upper rear deflecting roller 14 of the printing unit A and the feed roller 11 of the printing unit B forms a loosely depending compensation loop 10AB. The purpose of this loop was explained in detail above. The drawing shows that the metal web in the printing units <I> A </I> and <I> B </I> is printed on the same side. If, on the other hand, the reverse side of the web is to be printed, the web must be guided through the printing unit in the opposite direction, as is the case with printing unit C.

In this printing unit, the metal web 10 is fed via the rear feed roller 15, which is shown there in its operative position. The front feed roller 11 is brought into its ineffective position, as is the case with the printing unit C in FIG. The compensation loop IOBC of the metal strip between the printing units B and C extends from the rear upper deflection roller 14 of the printing unit B to the rear feed roller 15 of the printing unit C.

After leaving the drying roller 20 in the printing unit C, the web 10 is guided out of the work from below around the roller 16 and then on the rear side of the printing unit. The web then runs over the rear upper deflection roller 14 of the printing unit C, from there between the rollers 4 of the roll-on device E to the reeling drum 3 provided at the rear end of the device E. The rollers 16 of the printing units <I> A </ I > and <I> B </I> are not in operation.

As mentioned, the tape can be cooled to a pre-set temperature before it is introduced into the individual printing units. This cooling can expediently be achieved in that one of the rollers bordering the loop, preferably the front feed roller 11, is kept at a set temperature which is lower than the temperature of the one before relevant role located portion of the metal web. The cooling or maintenance of the low temperature of this roller can take place in any suitable manner, for example by means of a thermostat-regulated cooling liquid flowing through the roller.
