Description

Process for refining glass melts and apparatus for carrying out this process The known glass melting tanks are generally divided into a melting, a refining and a work zone. These zones can merge directly into one another or be separated from one another by swimmers, bridges or canals.

Up to now it has been customary to give the refining zone disproportionately large dimensions, since the melt could only be freed of gases through the surface of the glass melt with the usual gas heating from above through the surface of the glass melt. With such glass shrink tubs, one must always reckon with a considerable temperature gradient between the heated surface and the tub bottom, so that the glass located at the bottom of the tub only gets into the hotter zone on the surface through the convection currents desired for this case.

In order to be able to accomplish this exchange, it was necessary to provide a large space for the refining zone to carry out the refining process and to leave the melt in this space for a longer period of time.

It has now been shown, however, that the convection currents have the disadvantage that for the most part they have a direction opposite to that of the gas bubbles rising to the surface. As a result, the convection currents of the glass melt have a braking effect on the gas bubbles escaping from this and thereby hinder the refining of the glass melt. It is also unavoidable that the refined glass that is already on the surface is mixed up with the bottom glass that still contains gases.

In order to accelerate the refining process, it has already been proposed to use additional electrical heating and to completely separate the melting and refining process from one another so that the molten glass can only get from one zone to the other through a channel.

However, the previously known proposals for additional heating resulted in strong convection currents occurring in the refining chamber due to temperature gradients within the melt, which counteracted the uniform rise in the gas bubbles.

These disadvantages are eliminated by the invention.

The present invention relates to a process for refining glass melts, according to which the glass melt is passed through a refining chamber after the melting zone, which is heated at least from below and both sides in such a way that the glass melt in the refining chamber approximates at least in the vertical direction gets the same temperature.

This process ensures that convection currents in the glass melt are largely or completely prevented and the gas bubbles can rise unhindered from the bottom through the entire melt to the surface and escape.

It is not necessary for the glass melt to have the same temperatures in the longitudinal direction of the refining zone. However, this can be useful in some cases.

It is understandable that the refining process is considerably accelerated and the entire glass melting process is considerably more economical.

It is useful to vorzu heating in a manner known per se by Joule heat, but to design and arrange the electrodes in a special way compared to known methods. In the drawing, two exemplary embodiments from a likewise subject of the invention forming device for performing the method according to the invention are shown schematically.

1 shows a horizontal section through part of the first embodiment of the device, FIG. 2 shows a perspective illustration of part of the device according to FIG. 1, FIG. 3 shows an embodiment variant of an electrode of the device according to FIG. 1 on a larger scale, 4 shows a horizontal section through part of the second embodiment of the device,

FIG. 5 shows a perspective view of part of the device according to FIG. 4, FIG. 5a shows the power source which is used to heat the refining chamber of the device according to FIG. 4, and FIG. 6 shows a view of electrodes of the device according to FIG. 4 on a larger scale.

The device according to FIG. 1 has a melting chamber 1, a refining chamber 3 communicating with this through a channel 2, and a working chamber not shown in the drawing. The glass melt melted in the melting chamber 1 passes through channel 2 into the refining chamber and from there in the direction of the arrow into the working zone of the working chamber.

The refining chamber 3 is at least twice as long as it is wide, which prevents glass that has not yet been refined from reaching the working chamber as a result of the removal flow in the direction of the arrow.

In the refining chamber 3 electrodes 4 and 5 are provided for heating the molten glass, which, as can be seen from FIG. 2, are formed like a frame and bear against the inner walls of the refining chamber 3. This arrangement ensures that the electrical energy is supplied precisely in the area, namely in the vicinity of the walls, in which the greatest cooling takes place through radiation and heat conduction.

This arrangement and formation of the electrodes contribute significantly to the fact that the glass melt in the refining chamber 3, as soon as it has reached its target temperature, retains this temperature in all its parts and the refining counteracting convection currents are avoided. It is only necessary to regulate the electrical current strength so that just as much energy is supplied as is lost through the outer walls of the refining chamber 3.

It is of course also possible to provide heating from the outside. It is also useful to allow the frame-shaped electrodes 4 and 5 partially into the wall of the refining chamber 3.

If the heating of the refining chamber 3 by Joule heat is combined with heating from above, for example by gas, the electrodes do not need to be frame-shaped. A U-shaped design, as shown in FIG. 3, is sufficient.

In the embodiment of the device according to FIG. 4, the melting chamber 1 is again marked, from which the molten glass passes through the channel 2 into the refining chamber 3, in order then to flow in the direction of the arrow into the working chamber not shown in FIG . In this embodiment of the device, the electrodes 6 and 7 heating the refining chamber 3, as can be seen from FIGS. 4, 5 and 6, are rod-shaped and are connected via the connections ABCD or

EFGH connected to the power source. By switching between the known electrical control units between the power source and the connections of the rod-shaped electrodes 6 and 7, the power supply for the electrodes 6 and 7 can be regulated individually or in groups.

Furthermore, as shown in FIGS. 4 and 5, a frame 8 made of conductive material is arranged between the electrodes 6 and 7 on the inner wall of the refining chamber 3. This frame 8 is not in a conductive connection with any of the electrodes 6 and 7 and has the task of concentrating the electrical current paths on the walls of the refining chamber 3. If necessary, the frame 8 can also be made of semiconducting material.

If the electrical heating is combined with heating from above, the electrodes 6 and 7 arranged on the surface of the melt can be omitted, so that the remaining electrodes correspond to FIG. 6.

It has been found that the method according to the invention succeeds, after reaching the target temperature, in all parts of the refining zone at least in the vertical direction to keep temperatures that do not have greater differences than 10-201C. This is enough to prevent the harmful effects of convection currents.

It has also been shown that under these circumstances it is not necessary to measure the glass surface greater than 1 m2 i 4 t glass throughput per day with a glass stand height of about 80 cm.
