Description

In einer Nach- richtenanlage, welche zwei Lokalkreise<I>A</I> und<I>B</I> verbindet, ist für jeden Lokalkreis ein Impuls modem vorgesehen.

I>(c),</I> (d) gezeigt.

(a)</I> und<I>(b)</I> definiert sind.

Electric two-way pulse converter The present invention is based on an electrical pulse converter, e.g. B. a pulse modulator or demodulator, of the type described in Pa tent no.351630.

to store energy received from one or the other of the circuits mentioned in the reactance device and to discharge stored energy from each circuit into the other, and through a low-pass filter in the local circuit, which is designed so that practically no energy is lost :

When transferring energy from any of the above-mentioned circuits to the other, when the signal wave has a frequency which is between zero and half the operating frequency of the switching means.

Embodiments of the subject matter of the invention are explained in more detail below with reference to the accompanying drawing.

FIG. 18 shows a connection between subscribers in a telephone exchange which uses the line circuit according to FIG. Before the actual description of the figures are given below. some general observations made: An ideal reactance does not destroy energy, but: it can store energy.

In a messaging system that connects two local circuits <I> A </I> and <I> B </I>, an impulse modem is provided for each local circuit. Each pulse modem contains a reactance network used as memory. When a signal is transmitted from local circuit A to local circuit <I> B </I>, the memory allocated to local circuit <I> A </I> becomes slow

charged, and then my short period t2 (the pulse duration) the charge in the memory <I> A </I> is quickly transferred to the memory <I> B </I>. During another. Period ti t2, where t1 is the pulse repetition period, the memory B discharges into its local circuit. This process repeats itself

and a steady state with considerable power transfer can be achieved, even if (as is normally the case) the discharge of the accumulator B in its load circuit is incomplete. The capacity of each. The memory is of course dimensioned so that it can store the energy of the maximum signal strength that is likely to occur.

It is a teacher's desire that the exchange of charges between the storage devices <I> A </I> and <I> B </I> be as complete or almost complete as possible. For this reason a good storage network consists of two parts, one of which is able to discharge into the same network in the short period t2.

This part is either a) _ a delay line with the transit time t2, whose electrical charge is converted into:

the same line flows, namely in the form of a rectangular current pulse, the duration of which is t2, or b) a matched series circuit, the elements of which are selected so that 1 / LC <I> = </I> t2 / ii, so d The circle executes half an oscillation cycle in the period t2.

This half cycle transfers the charge on the capacitor of one storage unit to that of the other in the form of a sinusoidal current pulse.

The other part of the network usually consists of a low-pass filter. The above explanations are already contained in the aforementioned Swiss patent. In the. As described herein, the desired properties of a filter are examined in more detail and are shown to result in the desired complete transmission.

It will; considered different ways of connecting two pulse modem circuits, each of which contains a filter.

To. In calculating the transmission, a delay line or a tuned circuit which is fully charged or discharged in the short period t2 is considered to be equivalent to a capacitor which is charged or discharged by infinitely short current impulses.

It can be shown that this assumption is a good approximation of the rigorous theory, and that the results that can be predicted from this assumption agree well with experimental tests.

In FIG. 1, two modem circuits with a switching connection are now shown schematically. The switch can be of any suitable type.

An expedient switch consists, for example, of a symmetrical flat transistor in which the circuit conductors to be connected end at the collector and the emitter, the switching pulses being applied to the base of the transistor in order to make the switch conductive.

When using transistors that are not symmetrical sheet transistors, more than one transistor is probably necessary for each switch. The rectangles in FIG. 1 represent low-pass reactance networks of an arbitrary shape.

With reference to the above. Explanations, the system is analyzed on the basis of the equivalent circuit of FIG. 2, in which the current 1 is to be understood as a series of short pulses with the repetition frequency 1 / t (i.e. practically the current which actually flows through the switch of FIG ).

In a simplified manner, the entire insertion voltage ratio of the impulse system (that is to say the ratio of the voltage left at the receiving end at the terminals BB 'in FIG. 1 to the voltage when BB' is directly connected to <I> AA '</I> could be obtained)

3 can be calculated in function of the properties of the network of FIG. 3, which consists of the elements C, R1 and the arbitrary intermediate network and obviously corresponds to only one of the modem circuits of FIG.

The properties used are as follows: <I> a) </I> The coupling impedance H (jto) between the pairs of terminals in the stationary state. If a current ei- 'flows in via a pair of terminals, a voltage ei @ -it appears on the other pair of terminals. H (jo.

  b) The impulse function A (t) occurring on the right-hand side of the network, i.e. the behavior of the network when a pulse is applied. When a current pulse flows into the pair of terminals adjacent to the capacitor C, a voltage waveform A (t) occurs at that pair of terminals.

  c) The sizes G, G1 according to Fig. 7.

If the generator of FIG. 1 outputs an alternating E.M.K. with the frequency a) / 2, the insertion voltage ratio is given by the formula (a) of FIG.

A transmission system in which sampling is carried out at the frequency 1 / t1 can, in principle, only fully convey a signal, that is to say, transmit it in perfect form, if the signal bandwidth is not more than 1% t1. It can be shown

that the insertion loss over this bandwidth in the present system can be kept to a minimum by choosing the function A (t) so that A (rti) = 0 when r = 0.

Physically, this means that the voltage waveform caused by the current pulse is an oscillation of the general form shown in FIG. 4, and as is known, this waveform is generated by a low-pass filter. The insertion loss is then reduced to the simple form (b) of FIG. 6.

It turns out that this factor can be made practically equal to 1 within the passband (o) <I> <</I> nlti).

This consideration leads to two requirements for the filter circuit, namely first, H (joo) should be a reasonable type of low-pass function (since the square value of this function:

occurs in the transfer function) and secondly, A (t) should have the form of FIG. 4, that is, there should be a zero for <I> t = </I> rti.

Two forms of ideal filters have been found which combine these requirements. A filter is to be considered first, which transmits losslessly up to co <I> = </I> Tlti and then has an infinitely steep edge. The formulas for this filter are shown in Fig. 6 <I> (c), </I> (d).

If the expressions (c) and (d) of FIG. 6 are substituted into the formula (b) of FIG. 6 for the insertion loss, the formula (e) of FIG. 6 is obtained. This means that a lossless one Transmission is achieved over a bandwidth which corresponds to half the sampling period.

Second, consider a filter for which the square value <I> 1 </I> H (jm) <I> 1 2 </I> of the transmission module has the form shown in FIG. 5 (a). The shape is arbitrary except that it has point symmetry with respect to the pointis riding the abscissa (frequency) ar / ti and the ordinate
EMI0003.0070
so that they are considered the sum of a rectangle. and a point-symmetric function, as shown in FIGS. 5 (b) and (c).

   It can be shown: that the following approaches also apply to this filter: A (0) = 2 Ri / ti <I> A </I> (rti) <I> - 0 r </I> = b < B> <I> 0 </I> </B> The total transmission is then given by the formula in FIG. 6 (f), which has the value 1 at low frequencies and gradually decreases up to the frequency co <I> = </I> 2, -r / ti,

beyond which it has the value 0.

The first filter is actually a special case of the second filter, but it was. mentioned separately because it leads to transmission in borderline cases, i.e. to lossless transmission over the largest possible bandwidth.

In both cases it can be shown that the asymptotic impedance of the filter at high frequencies is that of a capacitance t1 / 2R1, so that any practical implementation has a termination capacitance of this value.

A delay line with the transit time 1 /., T2 and an impedance R2 has a capacitance t 2 / 2R2, so that if this is used as a terminating capacitance, the requirement of FIG. 6 (g) applies.

Leave the mentioned filter curves. cannot be physically realized with a finite number of elements. However, they can be achieved approximately by finite networks with an accuracy that increases with the number of elements used.

There is not just a single approximation procedure. The most thoroughly investigated process is based on the use of power filters with N elements, for which the formula of FIG. 6 (h) applies. The formula (h) shows the value 1 for low frequencies, and o for the frequency,)

<I> = </I> -rr / ti the value 1 / and then locks with a slope of 6N decibels per octave. The values of the individual elements for a filter of this type are known. In particular, the termination capacity is given by the formula of FIG. 6 (i).

The value of C in the formula (i) comes very close to the ideal value t / 2Ri for large values of N, that is for values of <I> N> 3. </I> The momentum function <I> A (t) </I> does not go exactly through O for <I> t = </I> rti, but it has very small values at these points for N> 3.

The practical results that can be achieved with known approximation methods are good enough to justify the use of electronic switching measures. For a power filter of three elements, the achievable momentum function deviates from the ideal function by only about 1 / 0o.

If desired, instead of a potency filter: a filter with the same ripple (Tschebischeff-Fiker) can be used.

So far only the case has been considered where two pulse modem circuits, each having a filer, are directly connected to one another. Before considering other ancestors of connection and for the purpose of facilitating the comparison between the various connection breaths, it is desirable to introduce two quantities G and G1, which are represented by the formulas in FIGS.

   (a) </I> and <I> (b) </I> are defined. When using these quantities, the formula (a) of FIG. 6 can be written in the form shown in FIG. 7 (c).

Now consider two pulse modem circuits, each with a filter, which are connected by a channel which contains an amplifier. In this case, transmission between the two modem circuits can only take place in one direction. It is assumed that R2 is the input resistance of the receiver.

If it is assumed that the amplifier has an available gain of 1, it can be shown that the insertion voltage ratio is given by the formula (a) of FIG.

In the case of an ideal filter having dn @ e characteristics represented by the formula (c) of FIG. 6, the insertion voltage ratio en takes the value given by the formula (e) of FIG. 6.

If two modem circuits each having a filter are connected via its channel which does not contain an amplifier, then there is two-way traffic between; the two modem circuits possible.

Let it be assumed that the channel has a delay which is equal to half an integral multiple n of the pulse repetition periods t1, and further has an attenuation of j Neper.

The insertion stress ratio is then given by the formula (b) of FIG. 9, which, in the case of an ideal filter, changes into the values according to the formulas (c) and (d) of FIG. The differences between these values and those provided by the formula. (e) of Fig. 6 are solely: determined by the delay and attenuation of the line.

Two modem circuits with <B> each </B> a filter can be connected to one another by a buffer. Such an arrangement is known per se (see, for example, Italian patent no. 576739).

Each modem is connected to the memory during a time t2, but the two modem circuits are not connected to the memory at the same time. One impulse turns into two. Transferring stages from a first to a second modem, namely from the first modem to the buffer as a:

first pulse with duration t2 and then from the memory to the second modern as a second pulse with duration t2. It should be z equal to the time interval between the first and the second pulse, that is, the period during which the pulse energy is retained in the memory.

It can be shown that the insertion voltage ratio is given by the formula (e) of FIG. 9, and that when an ideal filter is used, this formula is converted into the formulas (f) and (g) of FIG. 9.

For the transmission 'm in the opposite direction, the time interval between the pulses is equal to tl-rr. In both cases, the values obtained differ from the values given by the formula (e) in FIG. 6_ only by a delay which is equal to the time during which the pulse energy remains in the memory.

It is now desirable to consider the case in which two pulse modem circuits each having a filter F are connected to one another by a capacitive channel.

The circuit of FIG. 10 shows the connection of two pulse mode circuits, each of which contains a memory in the form of a delay line VL. The voltages at the accumulators: are designated with Ei and E3, while the voltage E2 is present at the midpoint of the connection channel.

If the connection channel is now switched through by closing the switches for a suitable short period t2, the charge is on a. Memory .according to the curves of FIG. 11 transferred to the other memory. If the channel has significant capacity,

if the charge exchange is not complete, there is a loss of transmission and a charge remains on the line after each pulse, which leads to crosstalk in multiple systems.

The use of tuned circuit memories in lieu of delay line memories has a number of advantages, the most notable of which is that the effect of the undesirable line capacitance mentioned above can be eliminated.

A pair of modem noises containing tuned circles L, C are shown in FIG. 12, while the waveforms relating to pulse transmission in the absence of line capacitance are shown in FIG.

The resonance frequency of the circle is chosen so that the circle executes half an oscillation cycle in the pulse period t2, where t2 can be determined using the equation <I> (a) </I> of FIG.

The current that flows when the switch is closed consists of half a sine wave, while the voltages on the storage capacitors consist of half sine waves that are in phase opposition to each other and are 90 out of phase with respect to the current. If the peak voltage across each reservoir is 1, the peak current is given by equation (b) of FIG.

As in the case of a pair of delay lines, the charge exchange is complete, provided that the common line has no capacitance and the switches are closed precisely during period t2.

However, since the current gradually rises from 0 at the beginning and gradually falls to 0 at the end of the pulse, an inaccuracy in the time slots causes smaller errors than when using delay line memories. In addition, stimulates the energy of half the sinusoidal current mainly at the lower end of the frequency spectrum,

so that the possibility of inductions between cables and circuit parts is reduced.

In order to determine the waveforms in the presence of capacitance on the common line, consider the network of FIG. 14. The LC elements are the coordinated circuits of the memory, while C represents the line capacitance.

In order to symbolize the closing of the switches when the line-side storage capacitor C is charged to the unit potential, a pulse current is assumed which instantly charges the capacitor and then allows the network to perform its natural oscillations. It can be shown that the values of El and E% are given by the formulas (c)

and (d) of Fig. 16 are given. If cos <I> alt - -1 </I> and cos sst <I> = 1 </I> are at the same time, then the charges on the capacitors C have been completely exchanged, since Ei then equals 0 and E3 equals 1 is.

Since the total charge on the two storage capacitors is the same as at the beginning, no charge can be present on the line capacitance C at this point in time.

The coincidence occurs when p cycles of cos, 8 <I> t </I> occupy the same time as (q -1 / @) cycles of cos <I> at, </I> like this: the equation < I> (e) </I> of Figure 16 shows where p and q are any positive integers.

It follows that complete replacement can be achieved in spite of the presence of line capacitance for an infinite number of capacitance ratios, so long as the resulting inductance values and waveforms are acceptable.

In the case that is of practical importance, <I> p = q = 1 </I> and <I> k = 3/2. </I> The waveforms are then based on half the sine wave with a modification by is the second harmonic, and they are given by equations (f) to (j) of FIG. 16 and shown in FIG.

It. Not only do the transmission waveforms E2, II and 12 have the value 0 at the beginning and end of the pulse, but the derivative of E2 at both limits and the currents at one limit also have the value 0, so that the high-frequency content of these waves shapes are smaller and the effect of misalignments is smaller than in any of the cases mentioned earlier.

The values of the components can easily be calculated from: Equations (et) and <I> (k) </I> of Fig. 16, and <B> C </B> is given. If <B> C </B> can be changed to a certain extent, this option will of course be used in order to obtain a desired impedance level,

either on the basis of the impulse path impedance 1 / L / C or for adaptation to the voltage and current limits of any particular electronic switch.

The switches shown in the circuits of FIGS. 10 and 12 consist in practical cases of electronic devices with certain current and voltage limits. If these switches, as it has proven to be useful,

consist of balanced or symmetrical diode switches, which are coupled by transformers with transistor pulse generators, there are two different types of limits,

namely a voltage limitation and, separately, a current limitation as a result of the diode and a limitation of the current-voltage product as a result of the transistor.

The storage circuit described here has the disadvantage that, for a given signal power, in the speech path it requires a greater pulse power to operate the switch than in the case of using a delay leakage as a memory.

The current capacity of the switch is determined by the peak current during the pulse, the voltage capacity by the peak voltage, which is to be isolated in a multiplex system, i.e. the sum of the peak voltage in the storage between,

the pulses and the peak voltage on the common line during a pulse. These quantities are tabulated below for a voltage of 1, which is transferred from one memory to another, for each type of memory mentioned here.

The line capacitance permitted in this case, namely 1330 pF, is large enough to permit the use of possibly up to 250 switches or 250 ports in parallel at each end of the transmission channel connecting the two modem circuits. ID = "0005.0143"> dulation can hardly be exceeded. Accordingly, <I> the </I> present development can be considered useful in time division multiplex switchgear with a large number of time channels. Circuits to take advantage of this development are shown in FIGS.

  17 shows a pulse modulator and demodulator of the type described in connection with FIG. 12;

which is suitable for use as a line circuit in a telephone exchange. A subscriber line 1 is through a transformer 2 with a. Connected low-pass filter, which, two inductances 3 and 4 and a capacitor 5 has.

The ticfpass filter is connected to a tuned circuit, which has the capacitor 6 and the inductance 7.

One terminal of the condenser 6 is connected to the inductance 7 via the emitter and the collector of a symmetrical planar transistor 8.

The inductance 7 is connected to a conductor of the transmission channel 9. The other terminal of the capacitor 6 is connected to the return conductor of the transmission channel 9.

The base of the transistor B is connected via a resistor 10 and an output winding 11 of a magnet core 12 to the positive pole of a battery 13, the negative pole of which is connected to the return conductor of the transmission channel 9.

The magnet core 12 has two control windings 14 and 15 and is designed in such a way that if pulses are simultaneously present on the windings 14 and 15, a negative output pulse on the output winding 11 occurs. While an output pulse is supplied from the winding 11, the capacitor 6 is connected to the inductor 7 through the transistor 8.

During the intervals between successive output pulses, however, said connection is ineffective. As a result, the inductance 7 can be used as part of a coordinated circuit for other participants during these intervals.

As can be seen from the positions of the multiple connection points 16 and 17, the inductance 7 is contained in the common transmission channel 9.

A capacitor 6, a transistor 8 and a magnetic core 12 are provided for each participant. By activating the magnetic cores one after the other, for example by means of a suitable counting circuit, the participants are connected to the common inductance 7 one after the other.

The output windings 11 for the various participants are connected to the common battery 13 via the quadruple point 18. If no output pulse is emitted from the Wick development 11, the positive potential of the common battery 13 reaches the transistor 8 and makes the connection between the capacitor 6 and the inductor 7 ineffective.

The output winding 11 is except with the base of the transistor. 8 also connected to a control conductor 19 of a coincidence gate 20, which consists of three rectifiers 21 and the negative bias source 22. The second control conductor 23 of the gate 20 is connected via a resistor 24 to the direct current source 25 which feeds the subscriber line 1.

If a dialing pulse is present on subscriber line 1, a negative-going pulse is transmitted via conductor 23 over. If during. the duration of this pulse, the magnetic core 12 is actuated, a negatively directed pulse reaches the conductor 19, which opens the Koinzideüztor 20, whereby an output signal on the output conductor 26 occurs. The magnetic core 12 is actuated numerous times during each dial pulse.

A sequence of output signals therefore occurs on the output conductor 26 which are interrupted in accordance with the selected pulses. This interrupted sequence of signals reaches the common switching equipment in the office via the multiple point 27 in order to operate it.

The magnetic core 12 and the coincidence gate 20 can be used with a subscriber line who is provided with a delay line. In this case, the delay line is used in place of the tuned circuit, which consists of the capacitor 6 and the inductance 7 be.

The circuit for a possible form of a connection between two subscribers in a telephone exchange is shown in FIG. The line circuit shown in Fig. 18 is that of Fig. 17, although other types of line circuits can be used.

Three switching stages are shown where, of course, a different number of such stages may be desired or necessary in practice. The subscriber lines connected to the exchange are arranged in groups, and the three switching stages in a connection between two subscribers are (1) calling subscriber to group to be called, (2) calling group to called group and (3) called group to, called subscriber. The Srechweg for levels (1) and (3)

is completed by the calling and called line circuit under the control of the magnetic cores 31 and 32 in the manner already described. The group-group stage (2) has a transistor 33 which is controlled by a magnetic core 34.

When the three cores 31, 32 and 34 are operated synchronously, the transmission of speech over the connection is possible. If the cores are not operated synchronously, it is necessary to line up the speech signals at one or more points. to delay the transmission path. One method of delaying the speech signals is to use a buffer as described above. <I> Literature </I> K.
