<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Stadium clock A stadium clock has already been proposed comprising two second hands, namely a second hand and a split-seconds hand, the latter being able to be retained by an electromagnetic member, linked together by a coupling device also arranged to bring back the split-second hand. superimposed on the second hand when the latter has been released from the electromagnetic retainer, controlled by a manual switch.
When the two hands are connected to each other by an elastic connecting device such as a spiral spring, the split-seconds cannot remain blocked for more than 59 seconds. If we forgot to release the rattrapante, the second hand would come up against the immobilized rattrapante from behind, which would damage the mechanism and stop the clock, so that we could no longer measure the total time of the phenomenon or the race to observe. It is therefore necessary to release the rattrapante before the 59-second delay.
A first object of the present invention is precisely to provide such a device ensuring the automatic release of the split-seconds after an adjustable period of time.
On the other hand, in a large stadium clock, the hands have a considerable weight and it would be impossible to suddenly stop such a hand without vibrating it or even breaking or deforming it. The second object of the invention is therefore to provide a device for braking the split-second when it joins the second hand after having been released.
The present invention relates to a stadium clock of the type comprising two second hands, namely a second hand and a split-seconds hand, interconnected by an elastic connecting device, the split-second being integral with a member which is supported normally, under the action of said elastic connecting device, against a stop integral with the second hand, to ensure the synchronized movement of the two second hands, a locking device making it possible to block the split-seconds hand and gradually increase the tension of said elastic connecting device .
This clock is characterized by a means acting on the locking device to automatically release the split-seconds after an adjustable period of time that has elapsed since it was locked, and by a braking device serving to reduce the speed with which the split-second joins the second hand. after being released.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the stage clock which is the subject of the invention. Only what is necessary for understanding the invention has been shown in the drawing.
Fig. 1 is a rear view of this embodiment.
Fig. 2 is a section taken along line II-II of FIG. 1.
The stadium clock shown is believed to have a very large diameter, of the order of 3 meters. It comprises usual hour and minute hands, not shown and which may moreover fail, and two second hands, namely a second hand 1 and a split-second hand 2. The split-second hand 2 is driven by the second hand 1, as described above. far. The driving of the second hand 1 by the movement of the clock is not described here, since it is foreign to the subject of the invention. The frame consists of two fixed plates, namely the anterior plate 3 and the posterior plate 4.
The split-second shaft 5 is pivoted on the one hand in the rear plate 4 and, on the other hand, inside the hollow shaft 6 of the second hand 1, the latter rotating in the front plate 3
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
by means of a ball bearing 7. To the rear plate 4 is fixed by means of three screws 8 an electromagnet 9 whose actuation circuit is not shown. An armature 10 in the form of a washer of magnetizable material, for example of soft iron, is freely mounted on the shaft 5 in the immediate vicinity of the electromagnet 9, and tends to move away from the latter under the action a weak coil spring 11 resting against the plate 4.
The frame 10 carries a pin 12 freely engaged in a hole of a sleeve 13 wedged on the shaft 5 by means of a screw 14. The sleeve 13 is integral with a member 15 in the form of a drilled disc, having a arm 16 angled forward.
The hollow shaft 6 of the second hand 1 carries a sleeve 17 to which is fixed a cage formed of two plates 18 and 19, interconnected by two screws 20 (FIG. 1). The plate 19 is drilled in its center to allow the shaft 5 to pass. A spiral spring 21 connects the shaft 5 of the split-second 2 to the shaft 6 of the second hand 1. Its inner end is hooked to a pin 22 driven into the sleeve 13, while its outer end is hooked to a pin 23 planted in the plate 19.
A toothed wheel 24 has its hub 25 fixed on the shaft 5 by means of a key 26 and meshes with a pinion 27 integral with a toothed wheel 28, the mobile 27, 28 being pivoted between the two plates 18 and 19. The wheel 28 in turn meshes with a pinion 29 integral with a star 30, the mobile 29, 30 also being pivoted between the plates 18 and 19. An oscillating pawl 31, likewise pivoted between the plates 18 and 19, is arranged. in the vicinity of the star 30, so as to oscillate when the star 30 turns, like a ringing anchor. The mobiles 27 to 31 constitute a braking device for the flyback, the operation of which will be described below.
The plate 18 carries on its rear face, on the one hand, a stop 32 against which the arm 16 of the member 15 normally rests, and, on the other hand, a microswitch 33 whose actuation button is designated by 34.
The clock described and shown operates as follows Let us first assume that the rattrapante 2 is not blocked, but rotates superimposed on the second hand 1. This is what we will call the normal state of the clock. In this state, the electromagnet 9 is currentless, so that the armature 10, pushed by the spring 11, is applied against the sleeve 13 and allows the shaft 5 to rotate freely. As already mentioned above, the second hand 1 is driven in a known manner by the movement of the clock, and rotates counterclockwise in FIG. 1.
The spiral spring 21 connecting the second hand and the split-seconds hand has a certain prior tension, so that the arm 16 of the member 15 is biased in the counterclockwise direction of FIG. 1 and remains pressed against the stop 32. Thanks to this arrangement, when the trotter 1 rotates, the split-seconds 2 rotates exactly in synchronism with it, so that the two needles 1 and 2 are perfectly superimposed. Note also that during this simultaneous movement of needles 1 and 2, the cage 18, 19 also rotates at the same rate, but the mobiles 27, 28 and 29, 30 do not rotate with respect to the plates 18, 19.
Let us now suppose that we want to block the rattrapante 2, for example to allow reading the run time of a runner. By means of a switch not shown, the electromagnet 9 is energized, so that the latter attracts its armature 10, against the action of the weak spring 11, and immobilizes it. The pin 12 of the frame 10 being engaged in a hole in the sleeve 13, the latter is therefore also blocked, as is the shaft 5 and the split-second 2. However, the second hand 1 continues to rotate counterclockwise. fig. 1, so that the stop 32 moves away from the arm 16 held stationary.
The cage 18, 19 rotates with the second hand 1, but as the toothed wheel 24, integral with the shaft 5, is now immobilized, the pinion 27 rolls on the wheel 24 and its wheel 28 drives the mobile 29, 30 and the pawl oscillating 31. This movement is very slow, so that no appreciable braking is exerted on the second hand 1. During this time, the tension of the spiral spring 21 gradually increases, because its inner end is immobilized and its end outer, attached to the pin 23, is rotated in the counterclockwise direction of FIG. 1.
During the rotation of the plate 18, the microswitch 33 which it carries ends up arriving in the vicinity of the immobile arm 16 and this arm then acts on the actuation button 34 of the switch 33. In the example shown. in the drawing, the position of the switch 33 is such with respect to the stop 32 that a lapse of time of approximately 37 seconds elapses between the locking of the split-second 2 and the actuation of the switch 33. This actuation has the effect of cutting off the current in the electromagnet 9 and consequently freeing the armature 10, the sleeve 13, the shaft 5 and the split-second 2.
Under the action of the spiral spring 21 now quite strongly armed, the shaft 5 tends to rotate in the counterclockwise direction of FIG. 1, until the arm 16 catches up to the stop 32. If this movement were too sudden, damage could occur; for example, the arm 16 could be bent on hitting the stop 32, and the rattra- pante 2 could start to vibrate or even break. The speed with which the split-seconds hand 2 joins the second hand 1 is braked by the moving parts pivoted in the cage 18, 19.
Indeed, the toothed wheel 24 integral with the shaft 5, which now tends to rotate faster than the shaft 6 of the second hand 1, drives the wheels 27, 28 and 29, 30, but the rotation of the star 30 is braked by the oscillating pawl 31, which lets out only one tooth at a time from the star 30. The split-seconds 2 therefore joins the second hand 1 with moderate speed, avoiding any risk of damage to the mechanism.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
If one wishes to release split-seconds 2 before the aforementioned period of 37 seconds has elapsed, a manual switch (not shown) can be actuated which de-energizes the electromagnet 9 and releases the shaft 5.
The lapse of time at the end of which split-seconds 2 is automatically released after it has been blocked can be adjusted as desired by moving microswitch 33 relative to the plate 18. For this purpose, groups of tapped holes can be provided in the plate 18. to allow the microswitch 33 to be fixed in different angular positions.
The split-second locking device could consist of a non-electromagnetic device, for example a mechanical device.
The braking device described comprises a gear train provided with a ratchet escapement. This exhaust could be replaced by an air regulator fitted with fins. It would also be possible to provide Ferrari braking by eddy currents or any other known means of slowing the catch when it joins the second hand.
