Process for selectively combating weeds and herbicidal composition for carrying out this process The invention relates to a process for selectively combating weeds, in particular cocklebur (Galium aparine) and chickweed (Stellaria). media), in growing cereal crops, and a herbicidal composition for carrying out this process.
The process according to the invention is characterized in that the an treats the growing crops and the weeds with an ester of α-( 2-methyl-4-chloro-phenoxy) -propionic acid of formula:
EMI0001.0016
in which R is a phenylalkyl radical, a radi cal alkoxyalkyl or an alkoxyalkoxyalkyl radical.
The herbicidal composition, to which the invention extends, comprises an ester of the above formula with a diluent.
These esters are new compounds and their herbicidal activity is all the more surprising since such an activity has not been described so far for any other derivative of phenoxypropionic acid and the corresponding substituted derivatives of the acid phenoxyacetic are inactive. towards the cocklebur and the chickweed.
The esters of the above formula can be prepared by condensation of 4-chloro-2-methylphenol with an ester of an α-halopropionic acid of the formula CH3 - CHX - COOR, in which X is a halogen atom. . They can also be prepared by esterification of α-( 4-chloro-2-methyl-phenoxy) -propionic acid with an alcohol of formula R - OH.
The composition for carrying out the process according to the invention may contain, in addition to the active agent, an emulsifying agent and, if desired, an organic solvent which may be miscible with water, such as acetone. or immiscible with water,
like the xylem. The composition may also contain a wetting agent. It can be provided to the user by instructing him to dilute it with water, which spontaneously transforms it into an emulsion.
It is thus possible to treat cocklebur and chickweed in cereal crops in order to eradicate these human herbs without harming the cereal crop.
The emulsifiable composition can also be diluted using other solvents, such as paraffin. On the other hand, the user can be provided with a concentrated emulsion prepared from an emulsifiable composition by adding an approximately equal volume of water.
These concentrated emulsions are diluted with an appropriate amount of water before application to the plants. The composition can also be in the form of a dispersible powder comprising the active agent adsorbed on an inert solid diluent such as kaolin, and a dispersing agent, with or without the addition of a wetting agent, or of herbicidal dust for powder coatings. ,
comprising the active agent adsorbed on an inert solid diluent such as kaolin.
The following examples show how herbicidal compounds which can be used for carrying out the process according to the invention can be prepared.
Example A To prepare a- (4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy) - propionate -de 2- (2-n-butoxyethoxy) -ethyl, a mixture of 21, is heated to 1800 C, 5 g of a = (4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy) -propionic acid and 17.8 g of diethylene glycol monobutyl ether until the distillation of water ceases. The residue is cooled, diluted by adding 30 cc of ether and washed with two 25 cc portions of 20% triethanolamine and then with 3 25 cc portions of water.
The organic layer is dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and the ether is distilled off. There is thus obtained 2- (2-n-butoxyethoxy) -ethyl a- (4 -chloro-2-methylphenoxy) -propionate in the form of an oil, d4 = 1.107.
The following compounds are prepared in an identical manner, replacing the monobutyl ether of diethylene glycol with the appropriate alcohol. Benzyl α-( 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy) -propionate, m.p. 196-80 C / 3.5 mm. (Found: C = 66.9; H = 5.6. C17H17O3Cl corresponds to C = 67.0; H = 5.6%.) Α-( 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy) -propionate 2-butoxyethyl , PE 1880 C / 3 mm. Found: C = 61.0; H = 7.5.
C16H23O4Cl corresponds to C = 61.1; H = 7.3%.) Example B To prepare benzyl α-( 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy) - propionate, a mixture of 8 g is refluxed for 4 hours of 4-chloro-2-methylphenol, 15.0 g of benzyl α -bromopropionate and 7.7 g of potassium carbonate in 40 cc of acetone. The reaction mixture is cooled, filtered, and the filtrate is subjected to fractional vacuum distillation.
The fraction with a boiling point of 1880 C is isolated at 2 mm Hg. In this way, benzyl α-( 4-chloro-2 methylphenoxy) -propionate is obtained in the form of an oil with a boiling point of 1880 C under 2 mm Hg and which is identical to the ester described in Example A.
Working in an identical manner, but using 15.6 g of 2-butoxyethyl α -bromopropionate instead of benzyl α -bromopropionate, we obtain α-( 4-chloro-2- 2-butoxyethyl methylphenoxy) -propionate in the form of an oil boiling at 180 1820 C under 2 mm Hg, and which is identical to the ester described in Example A.
Benzyl a-bromopropionate used for the preparation of benzyl α-( 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy) -propionate can be prepared as follows.
A mixture of 176 g of benzyl alcohol and 50 g of α; -bromopropionic acid is saturated with anhydrous hydrochloric acid at 0 C and the resulting mixture is left to stand overnight at room temperature after which is washed with 2 portions of 1 liter of water, 1 liter of 5N sodium bicarbonate solution, then again with 1 liter of water.
After drying over anhydrous sodium sulphate, the washed reaction product is fractionated under vacuum and the fraction boiling at 110 ° C. under 1 mm Hg is isolated. In this way, benzyl α -bromopropionate is obtained in the form of a sodium oil. boiling point of 110 C under 1 mm Hg.
2-Butoxyethyl α -bromopropionate used for the preparation of 2-butoxyethyl α-( 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy) -propionate can be prepared in the same manner as described above for benzyl α; -bromopropionate, replacing 176 g of benzyl alcohol with 193 g of 2-butoxyethanol. 2 -butoxyethyl α -bromopropionate is thus obtained in the form of an oil with a boiling point of 941.degree. C. under 1 mm Hg.
The following examples show how the herbicidal composition comprising the invention can be prepared. Example 1 To prepare a composition giving an emulsion by dilution with water, 5.3 g of α-( 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy) -propionate of 2- ( 2- n-butoxyethoxy) -ethyl in 10 cc of a solvent comprising 9 cc of acetone and 1 cc of Ethylan CP (a brand emulsifying agent which is a condensate of polyethylene oxide with an octylphenol).
Example 2 To prepare a composition giving an emulsion by dilution with water, 5.3 g of α-( 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy) -propionate of 2- ( 2- n-butoxyethoxy) -ethyl in 10 cc of a solvent comprising 9 cc of xylene and 1 cc of Ethylan SE (a brand emulsifying agent which is a mixture of lauryl diethanolamide and a condensate of oxide of polyethylene with an octylphenol).
Compositions similar to those described in Examples 1 and 2 can be prepared, in which the active agent consists of 4.5 g of α-( 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy) -propionate of benzyl or 4 , 7 g of 2-n-butoxyethyl α-( 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy) -propionate.
Example 3 To prepare a dispersible powder, 5 parts by weight of α-( 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy) -propionate 2- (2-n-butoxyethoxy) - are mixed intimately. ethyl with 90 parts by weight of kaolin and 5 parts by weight of Belloid TD (a branded dispersing agent consisting of a condensate of formaldehyde with an alkylarylsulfonyl).
This composition can be diluted with water and thereby form a dispersion suitable for use as a herbicide. Example 4 To prepare a herbicidal dust, 2 parts by weight of 2- (2-n-butoxyethoxy-) ethyl 7a- (4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy) -propionate are mixed thoroughly with 98 parts by weight of kaolin.
Compositions analogous to those described can be prepared. in. Examples 3 and 4, in which the active agent is any of the compounds described in Examples A and B.
