Die physikalische Beschaffenheit des einzutragen den Reaktionsgemisches beeinflusst selbstverständlich den. Reaktionsverlauf. Üblicherweise wird das Re aktionsgemisch bei solchen Verfahren in Form von Briketts chargiert. Bei der Ausführung des erfin- dunorsgemässen Verfahrens wird ein besonders (yleich- mässi-er Reaktionsverlauf unter Einhaltuno, des Wärmegleichgewichtes dadurch erreicht, dass die Re aktionsmischung in Form von Krümeln ( Pellets ) von etwa15 bis 20 mm Durchmesser zugeführt wird;

Process for obtaining aluminum-SiBzium alloys For decades, aluminum-silicon alloys, hereinafter referred to as AlSi alloys, have been made by reducing oxidic raw materials, aluminum and silicon with the help of carbon-containing reducing agents to electrothermal # rm # i- Schem Wegge generated. Inexhaustible sources of raw materials are available in nature for this, which occur widely in many deposits. The raw materials are most often found in the form of cola, clay and the like.
C The process used today for the electrothermal production of AlSi alloys is carried out in shaft furnaces with vertical electrodes and has been developed empirically. After all, over the years it has been possible to reduce the amount of AlSi -Alloys to gradually increase in aluminum. About 30 years ago the highest achievable limit was an aluminum content of 65 1 / o. Later it was possible to increase the aluminum content up to 701 / o.
However, it has not yet been possible to achieve an aluminum content higher than 70 to 72% (based on the sum Al + Si). Attempts to produce an alloy richer in aluminum have shown. only ever one product made of aluminum carbide and AlSi alloy.
C, The present invention now relates to a process, and a resistance-heated furnace for the extraction of aluminum-silicon alloys by electrothermal reduction of oxidic raw materials of aluminum and silicon with the help of carbon-containing reducing agents in a resistance-heated furnace. It allows the production of practically carbon-free AlSi alloys with over 721/0 aluminum.
It was recognized that the production of carbon-free or carbide-free AlSi alloys by direct reduction of the raw materials in the electric furnace essentially represents a thermal problem that cannot be solved in the generally used electric thermal furnaces. Since the temperature in the electric furnaces of current art is high and fluctuating, the temperature conditions in these furnaces are uncontrollable.
At high and uncontrollable temperatures, the action of carbon and carbon-containing gases on alumina and silica or on aluminum and silicon results in the formation of the corresponding carbides as soon as an attempt is made to use aluminum-rich AlSi alloys, d. h. to produce alloys that contain more than 651 / o aluminum.
The tests have shown that AlSi-ZD alloys with 720.70 and more aluminum can be obtained if the following conditions are met at the same time:
1. The reduction of the oxides of aluminum and silicon must take place in a narrow temperature range in which the speed of the reactions that lead to the formation of the AlSi alloy (also called silicon aluminum) is high, in which already formed carbides of aluminum and silicon react with alumina and silica to form metal and in which the evaporation losses of aluminum and silicon are still small.
This temperature range extends from 2050 to 22000C. If an upper temperature limit of 220011 C is observed, the evaporation losses are still low; Above C in 22000 C the volatilization of aluminum and silicon increases sharply.
2. The reaction mixture must be on the in the shortest possible time. The temperature range favorable for metal deposition is heated so that the temperature range of 1600 to 20000 C which is favorable for carbide formation is passed through so quickly that virtually no carbide formation takes place.
3. The resulting AlSi-integration must, as soon as possible after its formation, be removed continuously from the hot reduction chamber and brought to a temperature at which carbonization by the action of carbon and Carbon-containing gases can no longer take place with the formation of carbides. It is therefore necessary to ensure that the AlSi alloy flows out of the reduction chamber as quickly as possible.
According to the invention, the raw material is therefore brought directly into a reduction chamber heated to 2050 to 2200-3 C C and heated therein ,
and the liquid aluminum-silicon alloy formed is discharged after leaving the reduction zone into a space with a temperature between the melting point of the alloy and 16,000 ° C.
The resistance-heated furnace for carrying out the method according to the invention is characterized in that an intermediate space is arranged immediately below the perforated floor of the reduction chamber, which is used to cool the liquid aluminum-silicon alloy and to remove the collecting aluminum from the floor of the reduction chamber! - Separate nium-silicon alloy.
The reaction mixture is preferably added in such a way that Cr 01 is prevented from overheating in the reduction chamber. In other words, the way in which the reaction mixture is added can prevent the temperature in the reduction chamber from rising to a level at which the evaporation losses of aluminum and silicon are too great.
This can be achieved in that the reaction mixture to be added has a temperature which is sufficiently below the uppermost permissible limit in the reduction chamber. The reaction mixture can, for example, have room temperature; depending on the size and construction of the furnace, it can prove to be advantageous to feed the reaction mixture in the preheated state. In addition, the reaction mixture can be fed to the furnace either continuously or at short intervals.
The liquid AlSi alloy that is formed expediently leaves the hot zone of the reduction space, continuously and quickly, without having to seep or flow through a less hot layer of the reaction mass in which aluminum carbide can form.
In the known electrothermal processes for the production of silicon aluminum, the alloy formed flows through a layer of unreacted charge, in which there is a risk of carburization, d. h. the formation of carbides.
After leaving the reduction zone, the AISI alloy is now discharged into a room with a temperature between the melting point of the alloy and 160011 C . At this temperature, a reaction between the AlSi alloy and carbon with the formation of carbide can no longer take place. The carbon could either be supplied through the wall of the collecting vessel or through parts of the reaction mixture that were carried away by the AlSi alloy flowing out of the reduction space or simply fall from the reduction space into the collecting space.
The heat is fed to the reduction chamber by means of electrical resistance heating. Most conveniently, it is the side of the reduction chamber with a conductive mass, for. B. from coal grits, to give., Through which an electric current is passed. However, heating rods or other heating conductors can also be used. So you make sure that d12 heat is fed to the reduction room from the side. It can, but also by heating rods, the reac tion mixture itself in the reduction chamber are additionally arranged.
Sufficient heat supply is essential so that the favorable temperature range can be maintained.
The rate at which the reaction mixture is added, CC , can be set so that the heat supplied to the furnace is necessary both for rapid heating and for melting the reaction mixture and for reducing the oxides and for compensating for the losses used up by the discharged reaction products. becomes. In order to maintain the favorable temperature range, it has been found to be advantageous to feed the reaction mixture in such a way that the reduction chamber is constantly filled.
The physical nature of the reaction mixture to be introduced naturally influences the. Reaction course. Usually, the reaction mixture is charged in the form of briquettes in such processes. When the method according to the invention is carried out, a particularly (uniform course of the reaction while observing the thermal equilibrium) is achieved in that the reaction mixture is in the form of crumbs (pellets) of about 15 to 20 mm Diameter is fed;
To form the crumbs, the reaction mixture is added to a rotating disk or treated in a rotating drum, for example in a manner known per se after adding 20 to 250/9 water, c-r. It can be advantageous to add a percentage of sulfur in the form of sulfides, sulfates or their sulfur compounds to the reaction mixture in order to achieve faster melting.
At the appropriate temperature of, for example, about 21,000 C, both rapid melting and rapid reduction occur. When the feeding of further feed runs directly onto the surface of the continuously sinking, previously charged, the new feed in the lower feed has a somewhat cooling effect on the melt, which prevents overheating; Since a melting substance cannot be heated above its melting point, a constantly constant temperature will rule in the melting chamber itself.
The reduction chamber can advantageously be arranged vertically above the collecting vessel; With such an arrangement, the AJ.Si alloy can get into the collecting vessel the quickest, e.g. by free Fa:
11. If the reduction zone is, for example, in the lowest part of a reduction tank, which is arranged at a sufficient distance above the collecting space so that the liquid AlSi alloy can cool down sufficiently in free fall after leaving the reduction zone, and through this arrangement the collected metal from the perforated crucible bottom. is spatially separated to a sufficient extent, conditions are created which allow the implementation of the method according to the invention.
The purpose of a separation space under the reduction space is to interrupt the contact of the liquid AlSi alloy with the reacting charge as quickly as possible. However, perforated intermediate floors, for example, can be arranged in this door, which prevent excessive radiation of heat from the reduction space downwards or completely prevent such radiation.
The separating space can also be formed by a bed of lumps or grains made of a material that does not conduct heat well and does not react with the liquid AlSi alloy, e.g. partially filled with corundum chunks. Such lumps or grains can also lie on perforated intermediate floors.
The installation of baffles between the reduction and collection vessel can also be advantageous.
Instead of the vertical structure, an arrangement can also be selected in which the AlSi alloy flows diagonally into the collecting container. With such an arrangement, it is expedient to ensure that the wall along which the AlSi alloy flows down has a composition or a temperature such that it cannot react with the AlSi alloy to form carbide.
It can be advantageous to arrange cooling elements in the separating space to accelerate the cooling of the AlSi alloy passing through. These elements can consist, for example, of rods made of inert material with an insert made of copper, which outside of the furnace heat the heat from a cooling liquid is withdrawn.
It can also be advantageous to provide the collecting vessel with a device by means of which it can either be heated or cooled, so that it can be set to the temperature necessary to maintain the thermal equilibrium.
When carrying out the process according to the invention, a gutter or pan can of course also be understood as a collecting vessel, from & r the AlSi alloy, continuously into another vessel or even into a pouring device, e.g. B. in a ingot casting machine, flows.
So that the reaction mixture is brought to the favorable reduction temperature range in the shortest possible time and, in particular, the temperature range of 1600 to 20000 C as quickly as possible for carbide formation is run through, it is useful when starting up to heat the reduction chamber to a temperature of 2050 to 22000 C before the reaction mixture is introduced.
Of course, the method according to the invention can also be used when an aluminum-silicon alloy is sought which contains less than 720/9 Al, e.g.
B. down to 65 "/ o, Al , or even 6011/9. Although we have already succeeded, silicon aluminum with over 60% or even over 651 / o Obtaining Al in the usual electric furnaces is superior to the process according to the invention for the extraction of the AlSi Leoiieru "ngen, because the reduction pro, zäss,
can be mastered much better and the 7 process is therefore also more advantageous in terms of energy. The AlSi alloys obtained by the process according to the invention can have a fairly high content of iron (such as in ferrosilicoaluminum), titanium and other elements.
Figs. 1 and 2 (in the vertical and horizontal right-hand section) serve to illustrate the inventive concept on a smaller experimental furnace with an output of around 80 kW. The iron stove shell 1 is provided with a fireclay lining 2 and filled with coal semolina 3 .
Two parallel walls 4 made of magnesite. A delimiting interior space on both sides of the power supply nipple 5 made of graphite and the water-cooled steel electrodes 6. A cylindrical crucible 7 </ B is in the furnace > made of graphite at such a height that its lower part, which serves as a reduction space, is at the same height as the power supply nipple 5 . The crucible 7 is surrounded by a cylinder 8 made of electrode carbon, which serves to transfer the heat evenly to the reduction chamber.
A flow-through vessel 9 , which is also made of graphite and has a perforated bottom, is arranged under the reduction crucible 7 . The collecting vessel 10 made of clay graphite is located under the flow-through vessel, the lower part of which protrudes from the furnace below and by a jacket 11 <B to protect against excessive cooling > C t2 is surrounded by fireclay powder. On the reduction crucible 7 there is a thick cover plate 12 made of electrochemical material with a central opening for loading.
As can be seen, the reacting charge is in the crucible 7 , which is kept at a temperature of 2050 to 220011 C by resistance heating, from which in the Collecting vessel 10 spatially separated from the collecting AISI alloy. The AISI alloy formed in the crucible; flows - before it can carburize, through a perforated base, from the reaction space via the flow-through vessel, 9 into the collecting vessel 10 which is partially located outside the furnace.
The temperature of the collecting vessel is only about 90 011 C, i.e. about 1150 to 130011 C less than that of the reduction zone so that the liquid AlSi alloy does not take up any carbon in the collecting vessel.
FIGS. 3 and 4 show a further example of a small experimental furnace in vertical and horizontal sections. The arrangement is the same as in the test furnace according to FIGS. 1 and 2. The walls made of magnesite bricks are not present here; the power connections for additional heating by the graphite heating rods 13 are installed in their place.
In furnaces of the type shown, an AlSi alloy with 76.011 / o, Al and 23.111 / 9 Si could be obtained among others; the rest consisted of.
the usual impurities found in electrothermal silicon aluminum (iron, titanium, etc.). This AlSi alloy was obtained from a raw material mixture of the following composition: 27.4%. Raw kaolin 23.80 / 9 Burnt kaolin 23.60 / 9 Alumina 2.1% quartz 23.1% charcoal The mixture was crumbled into grains of 15 to 20 mm in diameter, which fell without damage withstood from 1.5 to 2 m.
Prior to the introduction of the reaction mixture, the reduction crucible was heated to a temperature of 2100 to 22001 ° C and also maintained at this temperature during the uninterrupted supply of reaction mass.
