Description

   B. :
1,4-Dioxyäthyl-tetrachlorhydrochinon,
1,4-Dioxypropyl-tetrachlorhydrochinon,
4,4'-Dioxyäthoxy-3,3', 5-trichlordiphenyl,
4,4'-Dioxyäthoxy-3,3', 5,5'-tetrachlordiphenyl,
4,4'-Dioxyäthoxy-octachlordiphenyl,
4,4'-Dioxypropoxy-3,3', 5,5'-tetrachlordiphenyl,
4,4'-Dioxyäthoxy-3,3'-dichlordiphenylsulfon und insbesondere oxalkylierte, kernhalogenierte
Dioxydiarylalkane, wie
4,4'-Dioxyäthoxy-3,3', 5,5'-tetrachlor diphenylmethan,
4,4'-Dioxyäthoxy-3,3'-dichlordiphenylpropan,
4,4'-Dioxyäthoxy-3,3', 5,5'-tetrachlor diphenylpropan,
4,4'-Dioxypropoxy-3,3', 5,5'-tetrachlor diphenylpropan,
4,4'-Dioxyäthoxy-3,3', 5,5'-tetrachlor diphenylcyclohexan,
4,4'-Dioxyäthoxy-3,3', 5,5'-tetrabrom diphenylpropan oder
4,4'-Dioxypropoxy-3,3', 5, 5'-tetrabromdi phenylpropan.

Process for the production of non-combustible copolymers
Flame-resistant copolymers of monomeric vinyl compounds, in particular styrene, and polymerizable, halogen-containing, unsaturated polyesters, optionally with the addition of antimony or phosphorus compounds, are known. The polyesters are by polycondensation of diols with ass-unsaturated dicarboxylic acids or their anhydrides, eg. B. maleic acid or fumaric acid, and halogen-containing dicarboxylic acids or their anhydrides, e.g. B. tetrachlorophthalic acid or hexachloroendomethylene tetrahydrophthalic acid.

However, such polyesters are usually colored.

Furthermore, they result with monomeric vinyl compounds, e.g. B. styrene, relatively viscous solutions, which has an unfavorable effect in some cases during processing, especially when impregnating glass fabrics. Finally, the cured end products generally have lower mechanical strengths than those produced using halogen-free polyesters.

It has now been found that flame-retardant copolymers of olefinically unsaturated monomers and halogen-containing, olefinically unsaturated polyesters are obtained by using polyesters from diols and dicarboxylic acids, the diol radicals of which are at least in part residues of oxyalkylated, nucleus-halogenated diphenols and at least some of the dicarboxylic acid residues Residues of a, - are olefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids.

The copolymers obtainable in this way can not only be distinguished by their flame resistance or flame retardancy, but also in particular by high mechanical strength, excellent heat resistance, excellent water and especially hot water resistance, clear transparency and colorlessness.

Oxyalkylated, nucleus halogenated diphenols which are suitable for building up the polyesters mentioned and which can be obtained by known processes by nucleus halogenation of the corresponding diphenols and reacting the halogenation products with alkylene chlorohydrins or alkylene oxides are, for.

   B.:
1,4-dioxyethyl-tetrachlorohydroquinone,
1,4-dioxypropyl-tetrachlorohydroquinone,
4,4'-dioxyethoxy-3,3 ', 5-trichlorodiphenyl,
4,4'-dioxyethoxy-3,3 ', 5,5'-tetrachlorodiphenyl,
4,4'-dioxyethoxy-octachlorodiphenyl,
4,4'-dioxypropoxy-3,3 ', 5,5'-tetrachlorodiphenyl,
4,4'-Dioxyethoxy-3,3'-dichlorodiphenyl sulfone and in particular alkoxylated, nucleus halogenated
Dioxydiarylalkanes, such as
4,4'-dioxyethoxy-3,3 ', 5,5'-tetrachlorodiphenylmethane,
4,4'-dioxyethoxy-3,3'-dichlorodiphenylpropane,
4,4'-dioxyethoxy-3,3 ', 5,5'-tetrachlorodiphenylpropane,
4,4'-dioxypropoxy-3,3 ', 5,5'-tetrachlorodiphenylpropane,
4,4'-dioxyethoxy-3,3 ', 5,5'-tetrachlorodiphenylcyclohexane,
4,4'-dioxyethoxy-3,3 ', 5,5'-tetrabromo diphenylpropane or
4,4'-dioxypropoxy-3,3 ', 5,5'-tetrabromodiphenylpropane.

Other diols by which the alkoxylated, nucleus-halogenated diphenols mentioned can be replaced in part, are, for. B.: ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, 1,2-propylene glycol and 1,3-butanediol.

The α, β-unsaturated dicarboxylic acids which can be used for the synthesis of the polyesters include: mainly maleic acid and fumaric acid, and also itaconic acid and citraconic acid.

In addition to these unsaturated dicarboxylic acids, other dicarboxylic acids can also be used to produce the polyesters. B. succinic acid, phthalic acid, terephthalic acid, tetrachlorophthalic acid, tetrahydrophthalic acid and hexachlorendomethylenetetrahydrophthalic acid.

Polyesters, which are built up exclusively from halogenated diols of the type mentioned and maleic or fumaric acid, have a softening point above about 100, can be easily pulverized and treated with z. B. further process styrene to molding compounds. By using other diols, however, the softening point of the unsaturated polyester z. B. to about 60-70, what for further use, z. B. as casting resins, has the advantage that they can be mixed in the melt with the olefinically unsaturated monomers, especially styrene, even at a moderately elevated temperature, which means that the addition of excessively large amounts of stabilizer, which in particular would delay cold curing, can be avoided .

Another advantage of using the diols mentioned is a shortening of the esterification time and thus the possibility of being able to produce particularly light-colored polyesters.

The new, olefinically unsaturated polyesters are usually practically colorless, clear, brittle resins which are easily converted into monomeric vinyl compounds, e.g. B.

Styrene, also in methyl styrene, divinylbenzene, methyl methacrylate, vinyl benzoate and diallyl phthalate, dissolved to form comparatively low-viscosity solutions and advantageously in this form, for. B. can be used as casting resins.

To initiate the copolymerization, catalysts or catalyst combinations can be added in the usual way, e.g. B. acid peroxides, such as benzoyl peroxide, or for cold curing z. B.

  Cobalt naphthenate and cyclohexanone peroxide.

As with the copolymerization of the known halogen-containing, unsaturated polyesters with monomeric vinyl compounds, antimony compounds can also be used to increase the flame resistance of the mixtures in the present process, e.g. B. Antimony trioxide or, especially for the production of clear, transparent polymers, add soluble organic antimony compounds according to Belgian patents 568 215 and 568 216 in the mixtures. Thus, according to the conditions of DIN regulation 4102, sheet 3, and ASTM 635-44, products which can be described as flame-retardant can be produced with a chlorine content of 14-15% and an antimony compound content of around 5%.

The mechanical properties of the copolymers can be improved in a known manner by storing glass chips, mats or fabrics.
