Description

Method for drying ground electrodes for electrical accumulators The present invention relates to a method for drying ground electrodes for electrical accumulators, in particular lead accumulators.

Various methods are used to dry ground electrodes. For example, whoever pre-dries the guest plates in continuous ovens and then stored them for two to five days. Panels treated in this way are dry and thoroughly oxidized, but have cracks.

It has also been suggested to pre-dry the guest positive plates and then immediately treat them at higher temperatures in a humid atmosphere. The time required for this should only be 45 minutes. However, it is inevitable to store the panels for a longer period of time, namely at least 36 hours, before forming, so that the desired chemical reactions of the active material are largely completed and the panels dry out at the same time.

The known method has the advantage that, with the prescribed composition of the paste for the positive grid, electrodes are obtained after the heat treatment, the mass of which can be relatively easily converted into lead dioxide during formation. On the other hand, cracks also occur with this method because of the longer drying time. So far, crack-free panels have only been obtained using processes lasting 21 and more hours. These processes require a lot of space and are not suitable for continuous operation.

The object of the present invention is to develop a drying process which allows the electrode plates to be dried without cracks in a shorter time than before and which is suitable for continuous operation.

This object was achieved according to the invention in that the guest plates are superficially dried in several time steps of no more than 50 seconds duration at different drying temperatures, then brought into an air stream in which they cool and after lingering in a humid atmosphere in a warm Air ready to be dried.

The process can be applied in such a way that the surface drying takes place in three zones with rising and falling temperatures, the 1st zone at a temperature of around 70 to 80 C, the 2nd zone at a temperature of around 200 C and the 3rd zone at a temperature of around 70 to 80 ° C Zone is kept at a temperature of approximately 100 ° C. The passage time of each plate through the three zones can be kept extremely short and amounts to a total of about half a minute to one and a half minutes with a very large distance from plate to plate.

After this superficial drying, however, the electrode plates are not yet free of moisture. The heat contained in the panels is enough to make them tear. To avoid these cracks, the dried-on panels are cooled down, and their distance from one another can be very small. This cooling can be effected by blowing the electrodes directly with an air stream.

After the plates have cooled to room temperature, they can be stored in racks for about 4 hours in a humid atmosphere. B. by covering with damp cloths or by spraying with water. Thereafter, an approximately one hour spray steam treatment at 80 C is sufficient to oxidize the panels.

The plates can then be completely dried, namely in warm air of around 80 C for around half an hour and then at around 200 C for around an hour. Drying can be done over an open flame.

With the aid of the process according to the invention it is possible to produce dry, crack-free panels in 6 to 7 hours, which can then be shaped immediately. In addition, the process can be used to carry out a continuous working process without large spatial expansion.

Within the first few minutes of the treatment, a thin oxide skin forms on the electrodes, which is stabilized by the subsequent cooling and no longer tears during the subsequent drying process. This oxide skin is initially only present on the plate surfaces, while the inside of the plate is not yet fully oxidized.

Oxidation of the metallic lead inside the plates is only caused by the action of added moisture at an elevated temperature.

The process can be carried out with all known positive and negative plastic masses, does not require any complicated requirements and process steps and enables mass plates that are free of cracks, can be easily formed and have a considerably longer service life in a much shorter time than before.
