Description

Process for the production of reduced, from the vat coloring sulfur dyes The present invention relates to a process for the production of present in fragmentation or dissolved preparations of reduced, from the vat coloring sulfur dyes.

The term sulfur dye from the vat is used for any group of the general class of sulfur dyes which are colored when used from a sodium sulfide and sodium hydrosulfite bath.

Typical of this class are the products of the effect of sulfur on the leucoindophenols of carbazole, of the alkyl carbazoles and of the acyl derivatives of carbazole and the products of the effect of sulfur on N - 4 - hydroxyphenyl / 3 - naphthylamine.

The method according to the invention is characterized in that a sulfur dye which stains from the vat is reduced in essentially neutral medium with a pH not below 7 by means of the sodium salt of hydroxyethanesulfinic acid and without the addition of caustic alkali during the reduction.

The reaction is advantageously carried out at a pH between 7 and 8, the degree of reduction not exceeding one third of the total reduction of the dye. This limited reduction represents the maximum degree of reduction that can be achieved with the reducing agent used, regardless of the amount of reducing agent used in excess, in order to achieve the necessary degree of reduction.

The sodium salt of hydroxyethanesulfinic acid has been known for a long time, but it has achieved little industrial importance because it is difficult to convert into isolated solid form during manufacture because of its instability and because it constantly disintegrates, which can be attributed to decomposition after its manufacture is.

These unfavorable properties led to the assumption that it would only be useful if its inconsistency in practical handling could be overcome, e.g. B. by the so-called flash-aging process or by the so-called two-step printing process, as it was written in British Patent No. 829177 for printing textile materials.

The sodium salt of hydroxyethanesulfinic acid is far less stable than the sodium salt of hydroxymethanesulfinic acid. As a result, it already has a reducing effect at room temperature and very quickly at a slightly elevated temperature.

In addition, the decomposition of the reducing agent forms volatile acetaldehyde during the reduction. This acetaldehyde, which is far less reactive in itself, escapes from the reaction mass under more tired reaction conditions than is the case with formaldehyde.

For this reason, no precautionary measures need to be taken against the destructive secondary reactions of the latter in the form of aldehyde-binding agents, as is the case with the use of the sodium salt of hydroxymethanesulfinic acid, in order to achieve fully satisfactory results in the dyeing with the vat dyes are superior to those previously achieved with sodium sulfide or sodium hydrosulfide.

The sodium salt of hydroxyethanesulfinic acid is produced according to the method described in: Friedlander, Advances in Tar Color Production and Related Industries, Part 8 (1905-1907), page 50. After concentration up to the stage at which the sodium sulfide crystallizes out, the solution of the sodium hydroxyethanesulfinic acid is centrifuged and used immediately for the reduction without attempting to isolate the salt in solid form.

Apart from all the advantages of the compounds of the sodium salts of hydroxymethane and hydroxyethane sulfinic acids in the production of reduced sulfur dyes of the class of sulfur products on the leucoindophenols, of carbazole compared to the known preparations, which are present in divided or dissolved form obtained by means of sodium sulfide, polysulfide or hydrosulfide, it has been shown

that the sodium salt of hydroxyethanesulfinic acid has an even greater advantage and it is virtually predestined as an ideal reducing agent.

The reduction can be carried out at room temperature or at a slightly elevated temperature. Since no aldehyde-binding agents are necessary, the dry dye preparations turn out better, and the process can be carried out more quickly in that the reduction is faster than when using the sodium salt of hydroxymethanesulfinic acid.

In view of the fact that the degree of reduction is limited, the amount of reducing agent used is not decisive.

In the following example the parts are given in GewA. Example 120 parts of a 30% pate of a sulfur product to act on the carbazoleuco-indophenol was converted into a free-flowing, soft paste in a known manner by adding 26 parts of the sodium salt of dinaphthylmethanesulfinic acid and then adjusted to a pH of 7-8 by carefully adding caustic soda while passing through a paste mill.

30 parts of a 40% strength solution of the sodium salt of hydroxyethanesulfinic acid were then added to the soft paste, and the mass was then stirred for one hour at room temperature (before the reduction, the temperature can also be brought to 30-40 ° C. and the reduction for 20 minutes made who the, after which it is cooled to room temperature).

12 parts of caustic soda were then added in the form of a 3.0% solution, and the whole mass was then stirred for a further 30 minutes.

The preparation can then be used in the form of a paste or a dry powder, where when dissolving or dividing in water a blue dye is obtained which, in the usual manner, gives a deep blue coloration with excellent brilliance.
