Safety device for a motor vehicle The present invention relates to a safety device intended to automatically cut off the power source of the electrical circuit of a motor vehicle during an impact.
This device comprises, on the one hand, a switch, the movable member of which is held in the closed position by a body which, by inertia, at the moment of an impact, moves and causes the opening of the switch and , on the other hand, a remote control device allowing the driver of the vehicle to return, from his station, said body to its normal position when it has been removed from it.
This apparatus is characterized by the fact that said body is constituted by a ball which normally rests on a seat capable of being retracted remotely by means of the control device, against the action of a spring. .
The single figure of the appended drawing represents, by way of example, one embodiment of the object of the invention.
The apparatus shown comprises a housing 10 formed of a body 11 and a cover 12 screwed together. The body 11 has a cylindrical base 13 and a flared upper part 14.
In the cylindrical base 13 can slide a piston 15, the upper face of which is recessed in its center so as to constitute a seat 16 for a steel ball 17.
This piston 15 can be moved downwards against the action of a spring 18 by a cable 19, one end of which is housed at the base of the seat 16.
In the cover 12 are mounted two terminals 20 and 21 of a switch whose movable member is constituted by a metal plate 22 mounted on a sliding pin 23, against a spring 24, weaker than the spring. 18, on the one hand in a housing 25 of the cover and on the other hand in a hole made in a partition 26 clamped between the cover and the body of the housing. The slightly domed lower end of this pin normally bears under the resulting action of the springs 18 and 24 against the bile 17 in an axial position for which the switch is closed.
The apparatus further comprises a control device located on the instrument panel 27 of the vehicle. This device is constituted by a pull tab 28 provided with an operating button 29 and a notch 30 intended to cooperate with a lock 31.
This pull-tab 28 is connected to the .second end of the cable 19. By pulling the button 29 towards oneself, the driver lowers the piston 15 against the action of the spring 18 which is compressed. When the pull tab reaches its locking position, the seat 16 is retracted and the ball 17 rests on the neck of the flared part 13 of the housing.
The driver can, at this moment, unlock the control device by releasing the lock by rotating the pull tab, and release the latter, which allows the piston and the ball to return to their working positions.
The operation of the apparatus is based on the inertia of the ball 17 which, during an impact, moves laterally by compressing, to disengage from its seat, the spring 18, and which comes into the position shown in line. mixed. In this position of the ball 17, the pin 23 is no longer retained and moves, under the action of the spring 24, downward to a position determined by a shoulder 32 which abuts against the plate 26. L The switch is then opened and the battery switched off.
It should be noted that the action of the spring 18 can be adjusted so that the device does not operate if the driver brakes suddenly, but only during a collision.
The control device can be used by the driver either to put the ball back in place and thus re-close the switch if the impact did not have serious consequences and if he wishes to restart his car. to voluntarily switch off the battery, by placing the pull tab in its locking position, as an anti-theft measure,
or to suppress any leakage currents which may, during prolonged stops of the vehicle, cause the battery to discharge completely.
It is obvious that the invention is not limited to the embodiment described. In particular, one could consider, in a variant of the form described, a connection between the ball 17 and the cable 19, so that the driver, pulling the button 29 towards himself, automatically brings the ball back to its seat. This solution eliminates the flared part of the housing.
