Description

Filter forming a package for a dose of ground coffee
The present invention relates to a filter forming a packaging for a dose of ground coffee, for example intended to be discarded or destroyed after a single use.

The practical use of such packaging filters has revealed problems of paramount importance, the two main of which are on the one hand ensuring systematic operation without user intervention and, on the other hand, extremely economical manufacturing.

This double condition imposes quite special provisions, both as regards the filter-packaging itself, and for the simple means necessary to ensure its implementation.

The filter according to the invention is characterized in that it consists of a bowl made of a material impermeable to water, thin and very flexible, this bowl having two internal annular seats on which are fixed filter paper washers thus forming a fully closed housing for the dose of ground coffee.

By way of example, embodiments of the object of the invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 shows a half-view in elevation and in radial section of a filter.

Figs. 2 and 3 respectively show a section along lines II-II and III-III of FIG. 1.

Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7 show schematically four successive phases of the industrial manufacture of a filter according to FIG. 1.

Figs. 8, 9, 10 and 11 show schematically, in half-elevation view, and in radial half-section, alternative embodiments of the filter.

Fig. 12 shows, in half-view in side elevation, and in radial half-section, a support for the filter.

Fig. 13 shows in half-view in side elevation and in radial half-section, a filter adapted to the support shown in FIG. 12.

Fig. 14 shows in radial section a filter according to FIG. 13, implemented using a support according to FIG. 12.

In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, the filter consists of an outer element, in one piece, having a pleated wall 1, a support element 2, a smooth wall 3 and an annular inner rim 4. This part of the filter can be made of any suitable material, but preferably one will start from a transparent or translucent plastic sheet. On the bearing surface 2 a filter paper washer 5 was fixed, which in a way forms the false bottom, while, on the annular inner rim 4, a second filtering washer 6 was fixed, which forms the bottom of the filter, a dose of ground coffee 7 being enclosed in the casing 2-6 thus formed.

The height H of the envelope is appreciably greater than the thickness h of the dose of ground coffee, so that, in the envelope, there remains a free space 8 allowing the content to swell, when the latter is saturated with 'boiling water.

Generally, the dimensions of the filter envelope 2-6 are calculated so that the total capacity of the envelope on the one hand and the volume of the dose of ground coffee on the other hand, is in the ratio of 2 to 1.

Thus, one obtains that coffee of granular structure, ground in a drum mill, for example in a ratio of 1 / s of pulverulent material and 2/3 of granular material, passing through a sieve with 22 meshes per cm2, inflates until the capacity of the envelope is completely filled, while producing, between the filtering washers 5 and 6, a slight pressure which regulates the filtration of the water to a passage time of between three and five minutes, from so as to deliver an extract with a concentration between 0.6 and 0.8 degrees Baumé at 150C.

This arrangement clearly cooperates in improving the efficiency of the filter thus produced.

It also allows, as shown schematically in fig.

4 to 7, industrial manufacture, at an accelerated rate, of large quantities of such filters under optimum conditions of economy. Indeed, the successive operations shown schematically are such that it is possible to perform them one after the other by a simple movement, step by step, without rotation or overturning, or any other delicate or complicated operation.

Considering that we start with a film or a sheet of transparent or translucent plastic, by a single pressing operation, we can form the starting element by simple molding, stamping or stamping in the manner of cuvettes or other hollow bodies made of paper or cardboard. The element thus prepared can be moved by translation and, in the following stage, it can receive a filtering washer 6, which, when it is placed on the inner annular rim, will be simultaneously glued to it, either by means of '' a suitable adhesive, either by thermal bonding (Fig. 5).

After a further movement of one step, the container thus formed, using a known metering device, receives the determined quantity of ground coffee 7 and finally, after a further movement, another disc of filter paper 5 is arranged, respectively fixed on the bearing surface 2 (fig. 7).

These different operations can be performed by a simple continuous rectilinear movement or step by step. Nevertheless, the mobile support can also be constituted by a rotary table, above which several devices ensure the flow and the execution and the fixing of the various constituent parts of the described filter.

In fig. 8 to 11, there is shown the implementation of such a filter with external supports, 9-10-11-12 of different types, the first two of which have a perforated bottom 13 respectively 14; while the last two have an open bottom 15 respectively 16. The filter can obviously be packaged to package variable doses of ground coffee.

This filter can thus be used both for a personal dose and for a family dose.

Figs. 12, 13 and 14 relate to a multiple dose filter, said filter for family use.

In this embodiment, the container 30 is constituted by a body comprising two frustoconical parts 3132 connected by a rounded part 33 so as to form inside a guide and centering shoulder. This body 30 is below provided with a base 34 allowing the container 30 to rest, in a stable manner, on an underlying container of any suitable conformation and capacity. In the example shown, the container 30 and the base have a central opening 35, that is to say that the container is produced without a bottom. Obviously, the container could also be provided with a perforated bottom. The body of the container has handles 36.

The envelope, in this case, comprises a frustoconical side wall 37, the upper edge of which is folded outwards and upwards, so as to form a collar 38, the section of which has an L-shape with a rounded top. . The lower edge 39 is folded back so as to form an inner annular rim. The thickness and the nature of the material used for making this wall 37-38-39 are such that they provide the collar 38 and the rim 39 with a certain rigidity.

On the inner part of said collar 38 and that of the rim 39 are fixed, generally by gluing, the bases 40, respectively 41, the latter being made of a material permeable to water, for example of paper to be filtered, a quantity of ground coffee being enclosed in the envelope thus formed.

The main feature, in addition to the morphological arrangements described above. consists in that the dimension and the shape of the collar 38 of the casing 18 are duly determined according to the dimensions and the taper of the part 32 of the container 30, so that under the influence of the hydrostatic column, a vertical pressure tends to push the casing 18 into the part 32 while, by reaction, a radial pressure between the collar 38 and the corresponding part of the inner wall of the part 32 systematically ensures the seal which forces all the quantity of boiling water to pass through the envelope 18.

By the presence of the inner shoulder 33, the casing, when it is allowed to fall in free fall in the container 30, will come into place, which would be quite difficult to achieve, without special precautions, s' it was a simple frustoconical container, the inner wall of which extended continuously over the entire height of the container.

The containers 30 and the envelopes 18 will obviously be made in proportion to the quantities of coffee to be prepared.
