Process for the production of a bituminous mixture
The invention relates to a method for producing a new bitumen-based mixture, which is particularly suitable for use in hydraulic engineering.

Hydraulic structures, such as dykes, dams, piers, substructures and the like, are usually subject to strong influences, either from waves or currents. Measures have therefore been taken to protect such buildings as much as possible against the effects of washing away by waves by z. B. clad with basalt or concrete blocks. Sometimes attempts have also been made to break the onslaught of waves by surrounding the hydraulic structures with an additional, more or less compact pile of large natural rocks, concrete blocks or concrete stones so that the water has calmed down when it reaches the actual hydraulic structure.

For the latter purpose, the so-called tetrapods in particular have become known and, among other things, have been used to construct moles in relatively deep water.

However, it has been found that a compact pile of large stones cannot withstand the action of the water over time. In particular, the suction effect of the returning flow undermines a protective structure of this type and this in turn does not protect the hydraulic structure against the destructive effect. This disadvantage also occurs with a stack of tetrapods.

The present invention aims to create a new mixture of building materials which can be used very expediently both in the construction of hydraulic structures in order to protect them from the forces released by waves and currents and to protect existing structures against these forces. The mixture produced according to the invention can form a closed, compact mass which absorbs the forces of waves and currents and which, since no water can flow through, also switches off its suction effect.

The method according to the invention is characterized in that coarse stones with a diameter of 50 to 600 mm are mixed with a hot mixture of a bitumen and a mineral aggregate of fine grain size.

The hot mixture preferably has a temperature of 60 to 1800 and particularly expediently from 100 to 1400.

The rough stones can, for. B. rubble stones or pieces of gravel with a diameter of 50 to 600 mm, e.g. B. rubble stones that weigh up to 80kg.

The bitumen used can be an asphaltic bitumen, which is generally used for road construction. Tar and pitch and mixtures of tar and asphaltic bitumen can also be used. Asphaltic bitumens of the blown type are also well suited, as are natural asphalts.

Mixtures of bitumen and heavy hydrocarbon oils can also be used.

The coarse stones are first dried and / and subjected to a temperature control before they are combined with the asphaltic mixture, if this is advantageous for the desired strength properties of the end product. In winter, for example, it is advisable to increase the temperature of the stones to at least 10 to 300. If necessary, the stones can be subjected to a pre-treatment; they can, for example, be provided with a layer of bitumen or a primer coating. For this purpose they can e.g. B. after drying in a room in which bitumen or another product is sprayed.

The coarse stones, which may or may not have been pretreated, can be mixed with the hot mixture in a mixing drum or otherwise combined into a coherent whole.

The proportion between the coarse stones and the hot mixture is chosen depending on the purpose for which the building material is to be used. Coarse stones and hot mixture are preferably mixed in such proportions that the hot mixture almost or completely fills the empty spaces which are present between the coarse stones. In general it can be assumed that a pile of light rubble stones weighing up to 80 kg contains 40% of the volume of voids.

Very good results are obtained by the method according to the invention when the coarse stones are added to the hot mixture in a certain gradation between 50 and 600 mm. If the stones are divided into piles from 50 to 200 mm (fine) and from 200 to 600 mm (coarse), the result is a good mixing ratio of 1 part fine to 2-3 parts coarse.

The process according to the invention can be carried out continuously without difficulty. The end product obtained by the new process can be worked up by widely varying methods which are known per se, e.g. B. with the help of tipping trucks that approach the material, whereupon it is brought to the destination, for example with the help of grippers. The transport to the point of use with tipping booms or barges is just as possible as the transport in special buckets, which can be emptied directly by the cranes at the desired point.

The temperature at which the bituminous mixture produced according to the invention is used is very important. It must be so low that the hot mixture does not flow through between the coarse stones immediately after the mixture has been applied.

It is therefore advisable to let the final product cool to a sufficient degree before using it. It has been found that the product must be allowed to cool to at least a temperature below 900 when an asphaltic bitumen is used.

The bituminous mixture can also be applied in such a way that molding units are prefabricated by filling a mold with the hot mixture obtained by the method described above. The product can be left to cool in the mold and after cooling a solid asphaltic body is obtained which has the dimensions of the mold used. This method has the advantage that cooling can take place against the filled mold during transport.

If desired, the mass can be mechanically compressed after it has been introduced into the mold.

The shape to be filled is, for example, a bucket with the shape of a truncated pyramid, the base of which is formed by the smaller of the two rectangles. The bucket is provided with two end caps. After the bucket has been filled, the lids are closed and the material is allowed to cool. This cooling can expediently take place while the mold and its contents are being brought to the construction site where the moldings are to be used. These can easily be brought into position by emptying the bucket with the bottom facing up. Moldings obtained with such truncated pyramid shapes slide easily out of the bucket.

Suitable dimensions for a bucket are: base 2 X 2 m; Height 1.5 m. Larger shapes can be used, but the units will then take too much time to cool.
