Description

Manufacturing process of heat resistant trioxane copolymers
Products with a high degree of polymerization, capable of being used as plastic materials, can be produced from trioxane. The existing literature in this special field of plastics technology is very abundant and relates to many different manufacturing processes.

Homopolymers produced by polymerization of trioxane have given rise to difficulties when they were worked in the usual machines intended for the treatment of plastics due, first of all, to their insufficient stability at the temperatures required for this treatment. The thermal stability of homopolymers can however be improved, in a known manner, by esterifying or etherifying the terminal hydroxyl groups of the polymers.

Another method of improving the thermal stability of polymers is to introduce other atomic groups at periodic intervals into the polyoxymethylene chain. In this way, the tendency to release formaldehyde from the ends of the polymer chain is reduced. These atomic groups can be obtained in a known manner by copolymerization of the trioxane with a suitable comonomer.

Heretofore, the known methods for the production of trioxane copolymers consist of cationic polymerization in solution, in fusion or in gas phase.

The present invention relates to a process for manufacturing heat-resistant copolymers from trioxane, and this process is characterized in that the solid phase trioxane is copolymerized with one or more other cyclic or unsaturated monomers, the reaction being initiated by cationic catalysts or high energy radiation.

An intimate mixture of trioxane and comonomer is made in one of the following ways:
 1) Predetermined amounts of comonomer are absorbed into trioxane crystals.

   2) Crystals of trioxane are conditioned in an atmosphere of gaseous comonomer.

   3) The comonomer and the trioxane are mixed in fusion and the mixture is then allowed to crystallize, so as to obtain a mixture in solid phase.

   4) Crystals of trioxane are suspended in an inert liquid which does not dissolve the trioxane, but contains the comonomer.

According to the invention, a cationic catalyst is added. stick to the solid mixture of starting material obtained according to one of the aforementioned methods, after which the copolymerization takes place, or else said starting material is irradiated with ionizing radiation in order to initiate the copolymerization.

The comonomers which can be used in connection with the present invention comprise cyclic monomers, such as epoxides, for example ethylene oxide, oxetanes, for example 2,2-bichloromethyloxacyclobutane, dioxanes, for example 1 , 3-m-dioxane, dioxolanes, for example 1,3-dio xolane, lactones, for example ss-propiolactone.

The polymerization temperature can vary, within wide limits, below the melting point. Preferably, the temperature should be greater than 30 C.

During the copolymerization, the particular solid material is suitably surrounded by inert gas or inert liquid, and the pressure can vary within wide limits.

Useful polymerization initiators are, for example, Lewis acids, for example BF3, or complex compounds thereof, SnCl4, etc. For initiation, the following high-energy rays could be used: x-rays, ss-rays, y-rays, for example Co60, electron rays, proton rays, neutron rays or other particle rays heavy or a mixture of such rays. The irradiation dose should be between 102 r / hr and 10S r / hr, and the total amount should be between 103 r and 107 r. The polymerization process can be continuous or discontinuous.

One of the advantages obtained in the application of the present invention is the possibility of obtaining a copolymer with a high degree of crystallinity. The polymers are obtained even if the starting material is not as pure with regard to the chain transfer agents as that which is required in other methods, where a higher degree of purity is necessary. Given that polymers of high molecular weight are easily obtained by the method according to the invention, even in a system with a limited degree of purity, another special advantage, in addition to those mentioned above, is that the molecular weight can be easily adjusted by adding suitable quantities of chain transfer agents.

By the process according to the invention, it is possible to obtain polymers in which practically all of the molecules have a molecular weight which is equal or close to the optimum value. In other words, it means that the copolymer exhibits a very narrow molecular weight distribution in the desired value range.

The high degree of order in a crystal is one of the reasons why the copolymerization according to the invention results in a polymer with a higher degree of homogeneity, a narrower molecular weight distribution and a degree of crystallinity of the crystal. final polymer higher than the known copolymers, produced from trioxane in other states of aggregation: in gas phase, in fusion or in solution.

It should also be noted that the process according to the invention makes it possible to simplify the manufacturing method and thus to obtain a cheaper product. The use and recovery of solvents can be avoided with respect to polymerization in solution. When the polymerization is carried out in fusion, a polymer block is generally obtained which must be broken up before it can be worked. The copolymer produced according to the invention is obtained directly in the form of separate crystals, the size of which can be suitably adjusted with a view to subsequent treatment.

In the case where the copolymerization according to the present invention is initiated by ionizing radiation, the known process, comprising a polymerization by preirradiation can be applied, this process consisting in first irradiating a solid mixture at low temperature (-2000 ° C. to +30 ° C. "C) and then heating it to a higher temperature (above 300 C) to complete the polymerization.

The absence of chemical initiators, when high energy radiation is used to initiate the copolymerization, allows a much simplified method to be applied for the purification of the copolymer obtained compared to the processes relating to other methods of copolymerization. polymerization.

The polymer obtained by the above-mentioned process is characterized by its thermal stability and by the viscosity of the polymer solution. Thermal stability K is defined as the degree of thermal degradation of the polymer, the weight loss in percent per minute, at a predetermined temperature and in a selected atmosphere. To measure molecular weight, the inherent viscosity, which is measured at 600 ° C, on a 0.5 percent solution of the polymer in p-chlorophenol containing 2% α-pinene is used.

The invention will be described in more detail below with reference to the following examples of implementation:
Copolymerization of trioxane and a cyclic comonomer in the presence of a cationic initiator.

   Example 1
200 g of technical trioxane is dissolved at 50 ° C. in 100 g of dioxolane. During 6 hours, the temperature is lowered to 15 ° C., which makes it possible to obtain large crystals of trioxane containing dioxolane. The crystals are filtered from the mother liquor, dried in vacuo for 120 minutes and then dried in a desiccator over KOH for 22 hours. The yield of crystals is 104g. By gas chromatography, the content of dioxolane in the crystals was determined to be 2.6 percent.

60 g of crystals produced as described above are introduced under nitrogen into a dry and pure 700 cc glass flask. The flask is evacuated at 60 mm Hg, after which 120 cc of BF3 gas is added. The flask and its contents are left at room temperature for 4 hours and the temperature is then raised to 53O C and is maintained there for 3 hours. During this time, the materials are maintained in crystalline form.

Next, air is introduced into the flask until the pressure reaches atmospheric pressure, dimethylformamide containing 1 / o tri-n-butylamine is added, and the mixture is boiled under reflux for 30 minutes and is then cooled to room temperature. The polymer treated as indicated is filtered, washed twice in boiling water and washed again twice in acetone and dried for 4 hours at 700C. The polymer yield is 72 ouzo of the crystals introduced. The thermal stability K222 measured in nitrogen was 0.25 and the inherent viscosity q was 0.9.

   Example 2
5 cc of dioxolane are introduced into a dry and pure 700 cc wide-necked flask filled with nitrogen. Above the surface of the dioxolane, a perforated porcelain disc is placed on which 50 g of trioxane in the crystalline state is deposited. The trioxane was previously recrystallized from methylene chloride and dried over
KOH in a vacuum desiccator. The flask is closed, heated to 53O C, temperature at which it is maintained for 2 hours, after which it is brought back to room temperature. The flask is evacuated at 10 mm Hg and 15 cc of BF3 gas are introduced into it.
