Process for the lightening of non-textile polymer material by means of dibenzazolyl stilbene compounds
The invention relates to a method for the optical brightening of non-textile polymer material which contains at least one polyolefin and / or polyethylene terephthalate by means of dibenzazolylstilbene compounds, in particular of non-textile raw materials and products, which mainly consist of polyolefin or polyethylene terephthalate.
The new compounds which can be used according to the invention are 4,4'-di [-benzoxazolyl- (2)} stilbene or 4,4'-di [benthiazolyl- (2) stilbene derivatives with benzazolyl (2) groups on both the 4- and 4 'position of a stilbene core. The method according to the invention is characterized in that the material is treated with a compound of the following formula:
EMI1.1
where x is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl, alkoxy or aryl radical, n is an integer from 1-4 and Y is an oxygen or sulfur atom.
It has been found that a dibenzazolyl stilbene compound of the general formula given above is a valuable optical brightening agent or bleaching agent for non-textile polyolefin and polyethylene terephthalate materials. According to the invention, therefore, polyolefin or polyethylene terephthalate materials can be given high brightness and good whiteness, for example by immersing them in an aqueous dispersion containing the D-benzazolyl stilbene compound together with a dispersant in water, and then raising the temperature of the bath by one to ensure good absorption of the stilbene compound.
4,4'-Di- [benzazoyl- (2) 1-stibenverbindungen, which are useful as optical brightening agents according to the invention, are crystalline substances with a yellow or greenish yellow color and are soluble in organic solvents to form a colorless solution, which under sunlight can emit a bluish-purple fluorescence. These compounds are so stable to heat that they can be heated up to about 3000 "C without noticeable change. Furthermore, no change can be observed when the compounds are boiled in an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid or caustic alkali.
The thermal stability of these compounds is very advantageous because it enables the formation of fibers, films, sheets and the like molded articles to be carried out from the melt of polyolefins or polyethylene terephthalate which are mixed with the required amount of the 4,4-di- [benzazolyl- ( 2)] fftilbene compound is added.
In the optical bleaching process of the present invention, the 4,4'-di [benzazolyl- (2)] - stilbene compound of the above general formula can be used separately or together with a chemical bleaching agent, an inorganic or organic acid, an inorganic or organic salt, a Alkali, a detergent (soap or synthetic detergent), a bleaching agent, an ultraviolet absorber, a plasticizer, a coloring agent, a conventionally known optical brightening agent or a mixture of these can be used, whereby the treated material can be given a desired brightness without any adverse effect becomes.
For example, a non-textile mixed product consisting essentially of polypropylene and cellulose can be successfully treated by immersing the product in the mixture of an aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite and a dispersion of an optical brightening agent according to the above formula.
The conjoint use of an optical brightening agent useful for cellulose with those of the above formula can result in a product having better whiteness. Furthermore, if an optical brightening agent which can be used according to the invention is used in combination with a detergent when washing printed polypropylene films at an elevated temperature, it is possible to increase the whiteness of the uncolored part of this film while the colored part is brightened (improved in luminosity ) becomes.
According to the invention, the amount of an optical brightening agent can vary within a wide range, depending on the type of material to be brightened.
For example, a small amount of the optical bleaching agent in the order of magnitude of 0.01% is sufficient to achieve a very useful degree of whiteness.
The use of more than 3/0 of the optical bleaching agent has no further advantage but is permitted.
One of the features of the present invention resides in successfully treating a polyolefin material by using an aqueous dispersion of an optical bleaching agent of the present invention, since polyolefin material is considered difficult to be dyed. Another feature resides in the fact that a product which results from the treatment with an optical brightening agent which can be used according to the invention shows good fastness to light, heat and other chemical or physical attack.
The 4,4'-di-benzazolyl- (2) -stilbene compounds which can be used according to the invention can easily be obtained by the condensation reaction of 1 mole of 4,4'-stilbenedicarboxylic acid with 2 moles of o-hydroxyarylamine or o-mercaptoarylamine. The following examples illustrate the invention without restricting it.
All parts and percentages are based on weight. The preparation of compounds used according to the invention is also given for further explanation.
Example 1 (production of an optical brightener)
49.6 parts of 1-amino-2-hydroxy-5-methylbenzene, 53.6 parts of 4,4'-stilbene dicarboxylic acid and 5 parts of boric acid are mixed thoroughly. The resulting mixture is placed in a reaction vessel, and the temperature is gradually raised to 1,800 ° C. while nitrogen is bubbled through.
The condensation reaction is carried out at 180-2000 C for 8 hours. During the reaction, the water formed in the reaction system is continuously distilled off. After the reaction has ended, the product obtained is allowed to cool, powdered and then heated with dilute NaOH. The resulting mixture is filtered and the mass remaining on the filter is washed well with water and then dried. Repeated recrystallization from dimethylformamide gives a pale yellow, crystalline product which is identified as 4,4'-di- [5-methylbenzoxazolyl- (2)] stilbene.
This compound does not melt below 3000 C and it is in dimethylformamide, pyridine, and dioxane
Chlorobenzene slightly soluble with the formation of a
Solution that shows bluish fluorescence.
Example 2
The procedure of Example 1 is repeated using 1-amino-2-hydroxy-5-phenylbenzene as starting material. The product obtained is a pale yellow, crystalline substance which is identified as 4,4-di- [5-phenylbenzoxazolyl- (2)] - stilbene.
This compound does not melt at a Tempe temperature below 3000 C and dissolves weakly in dimethylformamide, pyridine, dioxane and chlorobenzene
Formation of a solution that shows bluish fluorescence.
0.01 part of this compound is introduced into 1000 parts of polypropylene resin and 0.5 part of titanium dioxide. The resulting mixture is heated and the at
Melt obtained at 2500 C is introduced into a mold. The molded material thus obtained shows a whiter appearance as compared with that obtained without the optical brightening agent usable in the present invention.
Example 3
0.01 to 0.005% by weight of 4,4-di- [5-methylbenzoxazolyl- (2)] stilbene, based on resin weight, are introduced into the melt of polypropylene resin, which is kept at about 2500 ° C. The mixture is mixed thoroughly and then melt spun in a known manner. The spun fibers show improved whiteness and improved lightfastness over those obtained without using the above-mentioned compound. Furthermore, the above-mentioned resin melt can also be processed into products of any type having a different shape and showing good transparency.
If 10 / o titanium dioxide (anatase) is added to the mixture of resin melt and stilbene compound, fibers or shaped products of a high degree of whiteness are obtained, the brilliance of which is greatly improved.
Example 4
A dispersion is prepared from 0.03 part of 4,4'-di- [5-methylbenzoxazolyl <2)] stilbene, 3 parts of a nonionic dispersant and 1000 parts of water. Polyethylene film is immersed in this dispersion at a bath ratio of 1:60 and heated to obtain a film with improved brightness which is resistant to attack by sunlight. The same working method can also be used for molded products made of polypropylene, which are gray-white per se, and thus have a pure white appearance.
Example 5
A dispersion of 4,4'-di- [5-methyl-benzoxazolyl- (2)] - stilbene is added to granules of polyethylene terephthalate, so that 0.001 to 0.05% by weight of the stilbene compound in the Has total mass.
The granules are then thoroughly heated in a heating mixer at 150 to 2000 C and molded into resin products which show good transparency. With this mixing, an addition of 1 / o titanium dioxide (anatase) as a white pigment is particularly valuable in order to increase the degree of whiteness, which is resistant to attack by sunlight.
