Verfahren zur Herstellung von Phosphonsäureestern, Phosphinsäureestern bzw. Phosphinoxiden
XII/I, Seite 368 und 369).

Process for the production of phosphonic acid esters, phosphinic acid esters or phosphine oxides
The present invention relates to a process for the production of aryl or vinyl phosphonic acid esters, or aryl or vinyl phosphinic acid esters, or aryl or vinyl phosphine oxides, or for the production of mixtures which contain one or more such phosphorus compounds.
The process according to the invention makes the phosphorus compounds to be prepared more easily accessible than has hitherto been the case.
Aromatic phosphonic acid esters were e.g. B. so far only to a limited extent through multi-stage processes. Starting from aromatic hydrocarbons, they can be reacted with halophosphines, with phosphorus trichloride being used as a catalyst in addition to aluminum chloride as a modification of the Friedel-Crafts reaction (Journal J.
At the. Chem. Soc. 69 (1947), page 2020), or by reacting sterically hindered aryl magnesium halides in the ortho position with dialkyl chlorophosphonates (J. Grg. Chem. 16, page 1250 and vol. 18, page 207), or by Phosphorylation of aromatic hydrocarbons with hexagonal phosphoric anhydride (US Pat. No. 2,717,906) or with phosphorus pentasulfide (US Pat. No. 2,847,458) at elevated temperatures. All of these processes have a hydrolysis step in common, which leads to reaction mixtures in which, in addition to di- and higher phosphorylation products which, for. Sometimes in the form of isomer mixtures in addition to aromatic phosphine oxides, the desired arylphosphonic acids are only present in moderate yields.
Vinylphosphonic acids have also only been able to be produced using indirect processes. B. by dehydrohalogenation of ß-haloalkyl phosphonates (US Pat. No. 3,064,030), which in turn are of no interest as starting materials for industrial production.
A transfer of the reaction, known as the Michaelis-Arbusov reaction, of alkyl halides with trialkyl phosphites to produce alkyl phosphonic acid esters on aromatic, vinyl aromatic or vinyl halides has so far failed because the halogen atoms of the latter were not accessible to nucleophilic attack by the phosphorus atom in the alkyl phosphite. (Houben-Weyl, Newer Methods of Preparative Organic Chemistry, Vol. XII / I, pages 368 and 369).
According to the invention, the phosphorus compounds to be prepared or mixtures containing such compounds are prepared in such a way that an aryl or vinyl halide of the general formula
R (Hal) n in which Hal represents a halogen atom, R represents an optionally substituted aryl or vinyl group and n represents 1 or 2, with a trialkyl phosphite or
an alkylalkylene phosphite or a dialkyl phosphonite or an alkyl phosphinite, optionally in the presence of a solvent, at temperatures between 50 and 2500 C in the presence of catalytic amounts of a nickel halide under an inert gas.
As starting materials for the process according to the invention, preferred aromatic halides are the chlorides, bromides or also iodides of benzene or its homologues, of toluene and xylene, of naphthalene or other aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as those of aromatics such as thiophene, which are optionally replaced by one or several atoms or groups of atoms can be substituted. Examples of substituents are alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy, hydroxy, carboxy, alkoxycarbonyl, nitro, amino, alkylamino, mercapto, alkylmercapto, acyl and alkenyl groups.
However, not only aromatic monohalogen compounds but also dihalides can be used as starting products for the process of the invention, e.g. in the case of ortho-, meta- or para-dihalobenzene, the corresponding benzene diphosphates are obtainable in good yields.
In a particular embodiment of the process according to the invention, mixed halides, such as. B. chlorobromobenzenes, are implemented, the more reactive bromine atoms first reacting at an appropriately chosen reaction temperature and selectively chlorine-substituted benzene phosphonic acid esters are obtained.
The a- and / or ss-halogenated styrenes are primarily mentioned among the vinyl aromatic halides.
As aliphatic vinyl compounds for the inventive method, for. B. vinyl chloride, the dichloroethylenes, mono- and dihalogenated propenes, butenes, isobutenes, and the halides of higher monoolefins can also be used, as can halogenated vinyl compounds which contain other functional groups that do not interfere with the reaction. So z. B. halogenated vinyl phosphonic acid esters can also be implemented according to the invention.
For the process of the invention, trialkyl phosphites, alkyl-alkylene phosphites, dialkyl phosphonites, alkyl phosphinites and also cyclic phosphoric acid esters, such as. B. 1-alkoxyphospholines and 1-alkoxyphospholidines and those which are formally derived from the 1, 3,2-dioxaphosphorinane or dioxyphospholane ring system can be used.
The trialkyl phosphites used are preferably those having alkyl groups of 1-7 carbon atoms, but higher trialkyl phosphites can also be used in the process according to the invention.
The dialkyl phosphonites and alkyl phosphinites used are preferably those with alkyl groups of 1-7 carbon atoms, but higher alkyl phosphonites and phosphinites can also be used in the process according to the invention. Examples of suitable phosphonites and phosphinites are Benzolphosphonigsäurediäthyl- and dimethyl ester, Athanphosphonigsäurediisopropylester, 4-Methoxybenzolphosphonigsäure diethyl, dibutyl Äthylenphoslphonigsäure, Diäthylphosphinigsäure-methylester, ethyl ester Dioctylphosphinigsäure, Diphenylphosphinigsäure-butyl, phenyl-isooctyl-phosphinous acid-methylester, and the like.
The nickel halide serving as a catalyst is preferably dried before it is used in order to be able to use a largely anhydrous product. Among the halides, nickel chloride or nickel bromide have been found to be the most suitable for the process.
The reaction is generally carried out so that a slurry or solution of the nickel halide in the aryl or vinyl halogen compound is obtained. optionally using an inert organic solvent, the phosphite or phosphonite or phosphinite is added with thorough stirring at an elevated temperature.
If appropriate, a further amount of catalyst can be added towards the end of the reaction as it subsides. The nickel halide acting as a catalyst can, however, also be added to the aryl or vinyl halide in solution in the phosphite, phosphonite or phosphinite. In both cases, however, it is expedient to add the phosphite, phosphonite or phosphinite in such a way that it is not present in excess over the alkyl halide formed during the reaction.
The reaction should therefore preferably be steered in such a way that the phosphite, phosphonite or phosphinite added dropwise and the alkyl halide distilling off are balanced in order to prevent loss of yield, which is caused either by reaction of the alkyl halide with the phosphite, phosphonite or phosphinite, or by disproportionation of phosphite, phosphonite or phosphinite can occur.
In general, the phosphite, phosphonite or phosphinite, based on the aryl or vinyl halide used, is reacted in an excess of 5-50 mol. O / o. But also an excess of organic halogen compound can vice versa, z. B.
in the case of vinyl chloride. The alkyl halide formed during the reaction is expediently continuously removed from the reaction vessel by introducing a stream of inert gas, such as nitrogen or argon.
The amount of the catalyst to be used is between 0.1-20 mol / o based on the amount of the aryl or vinyl halide used and is preferably in a range from 2-10 mol / o. While the aryl or vinyl bromides require lower reaction temperatures, which are preferably between 130 and 170 ° C., the corresponding chlorides require somewhat elevated temperatures, which are preferably 130-3000 ° C. or higher.
The inventive method can be used both at atmospheric pressure and under elevated pressure, e.g. B. be carried out in an autoclave, the reactants z. B. be filled in at normal temperature, the air is then removed by thorough flushing with an inert gas and the reaction is started with stirring by heating to the required temperature.
On the other hand, after displacing the air with an inert gas, the aryl or vinyl halide can first be brought to the required reaction temperature in the autoclave, whereupon the nickel halide catalyst dissolved in the phosphite is injected with it. This allows both a batchwise and, if added in portions, a continuous implementation of the process.
When working under normal pressure, it is advisable to keep the reaction mixture at the reaction temperature for some time, generally 1-2 hours, after the addition of the trialkyl phosphite or the alkylalkylene phosphite, until all of the alkyl halide has passed over. The total reaction times are between one and 24 hours and are generally not exceeded 8 hours.
After the reaction has ended, the solvent can, if appropriate, be removed by distillation.
If desired, the catalyst can also be recovered by filtration after adding some solvent such as petroleum ether or benzene. The desired phosphonate, or phosphinate, or phosphine oxide can, if so desired, z. B.
can be isolated by distillation or crystallization.
The aromatic, vinylaromatic esters or aromatic, vinylaromatic and vinylphosphine oxides, which are easily accessible in good yields by the process of the invention, can be used as insecticides, flame retardants, lubricants, antioxidant additives and as hardeners for synthetic resins, but in the case of the vinylaromatic or vinylphosphonic acid esters, the Vinylaromatic or vinylphosphinic acid esters and vinylaromatic or vinylphosphine oxides are also valuable starting materials for the production of polymers or copolymers.
The invention is illustrated by the following non-limiting examples.

After a few ml of the triethyl phosphite have been added, the reaction starts sometimes quite violently.
The addition of the triethyl phosphite is controlled with the simultaneous introduction of a stream of nitrogen so that the ethyl bromide formed can be continuously removed from the reaction vessel. As soon as the development of ethyl bromide ceased with further addition of triethyl phosphite, a small amount of nickel chloride was added. The ethyl bromide formed during the reaction was removed from the reaction mixture via a 30 cm column and collected in an ice-cooled receiver. About 2-5 hours were required for the addition of the triethyl phosphite. The reaction mixture was then stirred at 150 ° C. until no more ethyl bromide was formed.
By distillation, 194.5 g (91% of theory) of the diethyl ester of phenylphosphonic acid from Kpo, 294-98 ° C. could be obtained. 103.5 g of ethyl bromide (95 o / o of theory) had formed in the cold trap.

94 o / o of theory can be increased.
