Abstract
Carbon-based filtrant materials are produced by distillation of a wood resin (small particles) in pres. of 3 to 6, pref. 5% wt. concd. H2SO4 contained in 15 to 20 vols. H2O at 450 to 700 C. After cooling, the carbon material can be reheated in an overn, in the absence of air, for 20 mins. at a temp. at least 50 degrees C > distn. temp. or (b) mixed with a coke-forming material for controlling pore size of carbon and then reheated to 450 to 700 C. The carbon filter materials have least tendency to plug and very high flow rates can be used. They have optimal pore sizes and are extremely light. They are particularly suitable for purification of water e.g. removal of chlorine, phenol, oil and colour.
