Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain capsulated activated carbon forming no coal dust, having superior adsorbing power and capable of withstanding high temp. disinfection by uniformly coating bead activated carbon granules with a membrane material, as thin as possible, made of condensate of a PVA-combined polyhydroxyphenol cpd. and aldehyde. CONSTITUTION:A stirred mono-phase aq. soln. is formed contg. a combined substance of practically-hydrolyzed PVA and a water sol. polyhydroxyphenol cpd. having two or more phenolic hydroxyl groups, e.g. catechol. Bead activated carbon granules as capsule contents are then dispersed in the soln. system, and aldehyde such as formaldehyde is added to maintain the soln. This system is continuously stirred to polymerize the polyhydroxyphenol cpd. and aldehyde. In the resulting capsulated activated carbon the ratio of the membrane material must be 0.1-15, esp. 0.5-10 wt%.
