Abstract

The belt is guided by a pulley pivoting about an axis tangential to its rim. Specifically the pivots comprise a spindle in a plane extending tangentially to the circumference of one of the pulleys, in the drum side, in order to displace the axis of this pulley on the axis of the devices forming the pivot so as to guide the belt in a manner which maintains it centered on the contact surfaces without pulley flanges.

Description

(fig.

Apparatus for directing the belt of a casting machine and prolonging its life
The present invention relates to an apparatus for directing the casting belt of a continuous casting machine and prolonging its life, the endless casting belt moving around part of a rotating drum and being guided and supported. by pulleys.

It relates to a casting machine in which a movable mold space is limited between the periphery of a rotating drum and an endless belt which wraps about half the circumference of the drum.

Idler pulleys apply tension to the molding belt and provide guidance and support.

The apparatus according to the invention enables an advantageously thin belt to be steered in correct alignment over rimless pulleys while at the same time applying the correct tension to the belt to prevent leakage of the molten material to be cast. This device allows the use of very thin casting belts which have several advantages: more efficient cooling, less belt distortion, longer life of the latter, longer life of the casting drum and product quality. cooled more uniform.

The direction of the belt is accomplished by twisting the axis of the output pulley around a pivot disposed near the inside or trailing edge of the casting belt with the pivot axis located approximately in the same plane that the point of tangency at which the belt coming from the rim of the casting drum contacts the output wheel, thereby keeping the thin belt centered on the flat and flangeless contact surfaces of the pulleys.

In a previously known continuous metal casting machine of the drum and belt type, the belt is guided by flanges on the outer edges of the idle pulleys or of the casting drum. It has been noticed for years, however, that this arrangement leads to numerous difficulties which have restricted the industrial use of this type of machine. The flanges cause considerable wear and deformation of the belt edges which damage the drum rim. The casting belt should be flat and held firmly against the rim of the drum to prevent leakage of the molten metal.

In drum and belt machines, it is advantageous to use a thin belt because the belt flexes in one direction as it passes around the casting drum, and then in the opposite direction as it passes around idle pulleys. The belt rotates continuously and is thus repeatedly bent back and forth, so that the bending forces are reduced and the life of the belt is greatly increased when this belt is thin.

However, due to the need in known machines to use flanges to direct the belt, it was necessary to use thicker belts.

Attempts have been made in the prior practice to use a thin belt under adequate tension, but the belt wears rapidly along its edges where it engages the edges. The belt has a tendency to climb over the edges of the pulleys as it passes over the pulleys, thus producing a distortion, tearing or curling of the edges of the belt.

To minimize these problems, a relatively thick belt (over 1.50 mm) has heretofore been used.

However, a thick belt hinders efficient uniform cooling of the molten metal and is more expensive than a thin belt. In addition, a thick belt is quickly damaged by excessive bending forces and thermal distortion.

In view of these drawbacks of a thick belt, it is preferred to use a thin belt, with a thickness less than 1.50 mm. Among other reasons, a thin belt is preferred because experience shows that a relatively thin belt as well as the cast product can be more efficiently and uniformly cooled; there is less distortion of the belt, ensuring a more uniform quality of the product, and the belt has a considerably increased service life.

This problem of keeping the casting belt evenly on pulleys without a groove, wear and damage to its edges, remained unsolvable for some time and much effort and expense was expended in finding a way to prevent this deterioration. belt speed.

An object of the invention is to provide an apparatus for directing the casting belt into correct alignment over pulleys having flat, cylindrical and grooved contact surfaces, without the use of flanges, and at the same time applying tension. suitable for a thin belt without creating a leak between the belt and the casting drum.

A continuous casting machine comprising the apparatus according to the invention will be described.

The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a casting machine comprising this embodiment,
fig. 2 is a view on a larger scale taken along the line 2-2 of FIG. 1,
fig. 3 is a view on a larger scale, partially in section, of members shown in FIG. 1, and
fig. 4 is a view, partially in section, taken along line 4-4 of FIG. 3.

The continuous casting machine 10 shown in FIG. 1 comprises a frame 12 on which is mounted a rotating casting drum 14. A flexible casting belt 16 moves in an arcuate path around about half of the circumference of the drum 14 and is guided and supported by three idler pulleys 17, 18 and 19.

A movable molding space 20 is limited between the periphery of the drum 14 and the belt 16, with molten material 22 being poured into this space for molding.

The material 22 as it enters the machine is poured from top to bottom on the right side of the drum (Fig. 1) and the cast product 25 exits from the left side of the drum upwards.

To contain the molten material 22 in the molding space 20 and to cast a high quality product, it is important that the molding belt 16 is held firmly against the flat rim surface of the drum 14 and against the rimless contact surfaces.
pulleys 17, 18 and 19. This amounts to saying that the front surface F of the belt must form a smooth and continuous curve adjacent to the drum 14 and the pulleys 17, 18, 19, without deformation or local distortion. The rear face R of the belt 16 is cooled by a liquid coolant 23 at high speed, for example water.

The belt 16 is cooled in the region where it
meets the molten material 22 flowing downwards, by the liquid refrigerant 23 brought under high pressure through a pipe 24 into a tubing 26 which is connected to nozzles 27 housed in grooves in the contact surface of the pulley d entry 17 and curved approximately half of the periphery of the pulley. As it moves around drum 14, belt 16 is cooled by the refrigerant sent
in a manifold 28 which extends in an arc centered on the axis of the drum and which is disposed near an edge of the belt 16.

The coolant is brought under pressure to the manifold 28 through several pipes 32 and applied against the rear surface R of the belt at an angle such that the coolant strikes this surface so as to spread out and form a film (not shown) moving. at high speed and transversely to the surface R. The manifold 28 is formed of three sections joined by flanges 30. The arcuate manifold 28 is mounted to the frame 12 by supports 34. A method and apparatus for cooling a casting belt are known.

The molten material 22 is fed from an insulated pouring vessel 36 and sent downward through a discharge pipe 38 into the inlet region 40 of the molding space 20. This machine is particularly suited to the continuous casting of a molten metal, for example aluminum, steel or copper. The cast product 25 is led out of the machine to a point on the side opposite the inlet 40, near the outlet pulley 18.

By following the path described by the belt 16 near the entry 40, it can be seen that the rear face R describes a concave curve when it turns around the pulley 17; then the belt bends in a reverse curve along a line of transverse inflection, then the rear face R describes a convex curve as it passes around drum 14. After the belt has passed approximately the half-circumference of the drum , it leaves the latter and reverses its bending so as to describe a concave curve around the pulley 18, then passes downwards at a given angle, then curves around the pulley 19 to return at a given angle on the pulley 17 , as shown by the arrows in fig. 1. The reciprocal of these bending directions occurs for the frontal face F.

The steering apparatus (Figs. 1 to 4) comprises a support 44 comprising an upper part 46 and a lower part 48 which is fixed to the frame 12 of the casting machine 10. The upper part 46 is pivotally mounted on the lower part. 48 by means of a pivot P disposed near the inner (rear) edge of the output pulley 18, approximately in the plane of the point of contact and tangency of the belt 16 and the pulley 18.

The contact surface of the output pulley 18 (fig. 2) is flat, without edges and the belt 16 engages this contact surface when it passes around the pulley 18. The belt 16 is directed by twisting the axis
of the output pulley 18 with respect to the axis of the other pulleys 17 and 19. This twisting of the axis of the pulley 18 is effected by rotating the upper part 46
of the support around the pivot P as will be seen later.

The output pulley 18 is carried by a rotating shaft
tif 50 mounted in a bearing 52 fixed to a plate 54 by
a series of bolts 55. The rear end of the bearing 52
is enclosed in a housing 56 closed at the end
opposed by a part 58 with a spacer 60 holding the plate 54 in place.

The device includes two eccentrics 62 and 64
(fig. 1 and 2). The eccentric 62 is mounted in a bearing
63 attached to the upper part 46, and the eccentric 64 is
mounted in a bearing 65 fixed to the lower part 48
of the support 44. The bearing 63 is fixed to a plate 70 forming the bottom of the upper part 46 (fig. 3), and
the other bearing 65 is fixed to the side of a support frame 49 of the lower part 48. The eccentric 64 has
a smaller eccentricity than the eccentric 62. The larger eccentric 62 is used for an initial adjustment to center the casting belt on the pulleys 17, 18, 19, while the eccentric 64 is used to steer continuously the endless belt 16 on the plane contact surfaces of the pulleys.

In making the initial adjustment to center the belt, a main motor, not shown, is started to rotate the drum 14, which causes the belt 16 to move along its path (Fig. 1), the belt passing. around the drum and the three idle pulleys. When the belt 16 is in motion, a large wrench is used to rotate the eccentric 62 until the belt 16 is centered on the flangeless contact surfaces of the three pulleys. This adjustment is made while the other eccentric 64 is located in the middle of its operating range.

Once this initial adjustment is completed, a set screw 67 is tightened to hold the eccentric 62 in place. A similar set screw 67 is used to lock the other eccentric 64 temporarily during the initial adjustment. During the casting operation, the lower eccentric 64 is operated by a steering drive member in the form of a hand lever 68. This lever may be operated by hand to steer the belt, or it may be operated. by a hydraulic cylinder-piston mechanism 69, the piston rod of which pivots at 71 on the lever 68, the cylinder pivoting at 73 on the support frame 49. A detector mechanism, not shown, for example a switch comprising a finger lightly touching the edge of the belt 16, makes it possible to detect the position of the belt to automatically control the mechanism 69.

The eccentrics 62 and 64 (fig. 2 to 4) are connected by a connecting rod 66 which engages their eccentric parts.

By rotation of the eccentrics, the bearing 63 is pulled by the connecting rod 66 either towards the bearing 65 or in the opposite direction.

When the bearing 63 is pulled towards the bearing 65, the upper part 46 of the support rotates in the dextrorotatory direction C (fig. 2) around the pivot P. This rotation of the upper part twists the axis of the shaft 50 of the output pulley 18 in the dextrorotatory direction C with respect to the axes of the other pulleys and of the drum. When the bearing 63 is pushed away from the bearing 65, the upper part 45 and the axis of the shaft 50 are twisted in the levorotatory direction D around the pivot P. With this arrangement, the axis of the output pulley 18 can be twisted in either direction with respect to the axes of the other pulleys and the drum and thereby cause the belt 16 to move in either direction across the surfaces of the pulleys 17 and 19 to maintain the belt correctly aligned with the pulleys.

Angular movement C or D around pivot P of shaft 50 of output pulley 18 is approximately one degree in either direction, i.e. approximately 1 "from neutral position This neutral position is that for which the shaft 50 of pulley 18 is parallel to the axes of the other pulleys and of the drum.

Once the belt has been initially centered, the steering lever 68 is operated from time to time whenever the belt begins to move forward or backward along the contact surfaces of the pulleys 17, 18, 19, c that is, whenever it begins to deviate from its central position.

The twisting of the shaft 50 of the pulley 18 causes the belt to follow a new path as it rotates around about half of the pulley 18. This new path produces the displacement of the belt itself, which slowly crawls in direction. axial along the contact faces of the other pulleys, thus counteracting the deflection in order to be brought back to its central position. The twisting of the shaft 50 in the dextrorotatory direction C forces the belt 16 to move slowly backwards (away from the spectator looking at FIG. 1). Conversely, the torsion of the shaft 50 in the levorotatory direction D forces the belt to move slowly forward (towards the viewer in FIG. 1).

The upper part 46 and the lower part 48 (fig. 2 to 4) are arranged so that the upper part 46 slides on the lower part 48. The upper part is mounted on the steering plate 70 which slides on a plate 72 to friction reduced, porous bronze impregnated with oil, which rests on the top of a steering plate 74 at the top of the support frame 49. The thin plate 72 with reduced friction is disposed between the plates 70 and 74 for reduce the friction between them when the upper part 46 swivels in the C or D directions.

In order to keep the upper platen 70 down, to counterbalance the weight of the pulley 18 and the shaft 50 and the tension force of the belt 16 exerted on it, a retaining band 76 is attached at each end to the platen. lower 74 by bolts 78.

The extent of pivoting of the plate 70 in both directions is limited by these bolts 78.

Alternatively, the input pulley 17 could also be arranged so that its axis is twisted, that is to say arranged like the pulley 18, which would also make it possible to steer the belt 16. However, it is preferred to use the belt. pulley 18 in the steering device due to the presence of the molten material 22 at the inlet of the casting machine.

In the machine described, the belt has a thickness of less than 1.50 mm and when incorporated into the apparatus described, it gives the many advantages described above. Furthermore, it is less expensive and lasts much longer than the belts of known machines, while producing a more evenly cooled cast product.
