Description

Process for the optical brightening of substrates
The invention relates to a method for the optical brightening of substrates with the exception of textile products in the textile industry, which is characterized in that compounds of the formula I
EMI1.1
in which R and R 'are an optionally substituted aryl radical and X is a vinyl group or the grouping
CH2-CH2-Y, in which Y stands for the remainder of a hydrogen-active compound HY is used.

Pyrazoline compounds which contain a styrene radical in the 3-position are already known. So z. B. in the French patent 1 095 010 3 styryl # 2-pyrazolines claimed, which carry an aromatic radical in the 1-position and in addition to alkyl, alkoxy, amino, alkylated and acylated amino groups and halogen atoms, at least one sulfonic acid group as a substituent contain.

Styrylpvrazolines of the formula I in which R and R 'are an optionally substituted aryl radical, preferably a phenyl and in particular a p-chlorophenyl radical and X is a vinyl group or the -CH2-CH2-Y group, in which Y is the radical of a hydrogen-active compound , can be prepared by adding dibenzal compounds of formula II
R-CH CH-CO-CH = CH- 'at about 60 to about 130 C with 4-hydrazino-phenyl-sshydroxyäthylsulfon condensed, the resulting styrylpyrazolines (I, X = -CH2-CH2-OH) optionally in their mineral acid esters, preferably Sulfuric acid ester (I, X = -CHCHO-SOsMe, never hydrogen or a cation) transferred,

these are converted into the vinyl sulfone compounds (I, X = CH = CHs), if appropriate by the action of alkaline agents, and hydrogen-active compounds of the formula H-Y are added to these, if appropriate in the presence of alkaline catalysts.

Hydrogen-active compounds of the formula HY in which Y can also carry further active hydrogen atoms are, for example, alcohols, mercaptans, phenols, triophenols, primary and secondary amines, acid amides, the amide nitrogen of which bears at least one hydrogen atom, salts of sulphurous acid and CH-acidic compounds into consideration.

For the esterification of the β-hydroxyethylsulfone compound (I, X = -CH2-CH2-OH) one uses, for example, hydrohalic acids, such as hydrochloric acid, but preferably phosphoric acid and especially sulfuric acid.

Possible alcohols are essentially primary and secondary aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and araliphatic alcohols with up to 18 carbon atoms, which can carry further substituents such as hydroxy, alkoxy, but preferably dialkylamino and trialkylammonium groups, such as methanol, ethanol, n Propanol, i-propanol, n-butanol, dodecyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, butanediol-1 3, methyl glycol, dimethylaminoethanol, diethylaminoethanol, di-n-butylaminoethanol, 1-dimethylaminopropanol-2, N-ss-hydroxyethylpiperidine, and cyclohexanol.

Analogously to this, it is also possible to add mercaptans, such as, for example, sithyl or benzyl mercaptan, phenols, such as, for example, phenol, the cresols and xylenols, and the corresponding thiophenols, onto the vinyl group.

Possible amines are primary and secondary aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic amines, which can also carry further substituents, such as, for example, carboxylic and sulfonic acid, hydroxy, amino and, preferably, dialkylamino groups. Examples include: methylamine, ethylamine, n-propylamine, n-butylamine, stearylamine, ethanolamine, cyclohexylamine, benzylamine, dimethylamine, diethylamine, di-n-butylamine, diethanolamine, N-methyltaurine, N-methylglycine, ss- Diethylamino-ethylamine, N-methylbenzylamine, piperidine, morpholine, ethylenediamine and piperazine.

Acid amides whose amide nitrogen also bears at least one hydrogen atom are carboxamides, lactams, amides of carbonic acid, such as ureas and urethanes, and their thio derivatives, and also sulfonic acid amides.

Mentioned in detail, for example: formamide, acetamide, propionic acid amide, n-butyric acid amide, n-valeric acid amide, caproic acid amide, diethyl acetic acid amide, hexahydrobenzamide, benzamide, 4-methylbenzamide, 4-methoxy-benzamide, N-methylacetamide, N-ethylacetamide, Nn-propyl acetamide -Stearyl-acetamide, N-methyl-benzamide, acetanilide, N-benzylacetamide, and benzanilide; also urea, imidazolidone-2, ethyl urethane, azetidinone-2, E-caprolactam, as well as benzene sulfonic acid amide and p-toluenesulfonic acid amide.

Examples of suitable C-H-acidic compounds are malonic esters, acetoacetic esters and acetylacetone.

As dibenzal compounds of the formula II R-CH = CH-C (# CH = CH-k '(11), which can be obtained, for example, by condensation of 1 mole of acetone with 2 moles of an aromatic aldehyde, such as benzaldehyde, p-tolylaldehyde o-, m- and p-chlorobenzaldehyde, 3,4-dichlorobenzaldehyde, p-fluorobenzaldehyde, p-cyanobenzaldehyde, p-carboxybenzaldehyde, p-methoxybenzaldehyde, p-carbomethoxybenzaldehyde or p-trifluoromethylbenzaldehyde is obtained using the more easily accessible symmetrical products.

For the condensation of the dibenzal compounds of the formula II with the 4-hydrazino-phenyl-ss-hydroxyethyl sulfone, approximately equimolar amounts are boiled in ethanol for several hours. By adding a small amount of concentrated hydrochloric acid, the reaction is greatly accelerated and the yield is significantly increased.

The esterification of the hydroxyethylsulfone compounds (formula I, X = -Cff2-CHOH) with concentrated sulfuric acid is carried out with cooling, preferably at a temperature of about 0 to about 10.degree. If the temperature is allowed to rise higher, one observes the formation of water-soluble products which are different from the desired sulfuric acid ester and which cannot be converted into the vinyl sulfone compound like this. It proves to be expedient to deposit the sulfuric acid esters (formula I, X = -CH2-CH2-O-SO @ Me) as potassium salts (Me = K), since these crystallize better than, for example, the corresponding sodium compounds.

The amount of alkali used in converting the sulfuric acid ester into the vinyl compounds (formula I, X = -CH = CH2) - for economic reasons, it is advisable to work with sodium hydroxide solution to set and maintain a pH of about 10 to about 11. If the pH value drops during the subsequent stirring at elevated temperature (approx. 50 to approx. 70 C), further alkali must be added in order to keep the pH value mentioned constant. In some cases it is advantageous to work in the presence of acetone, since this solvent accelerates the crystallization of heavily crystallizing vinyl sulfone compounds.

To add primary and secondary amines to the vinyl sulfone compounds (formula I, X = CH = CH2), it is advisable to work with an excess of the amine to be added in the presence of an organic solvent, preferably water-miscible, such as dioxane, dimethylformamide or iaithanol. Mixtures of water and the solvents mentioned can also be used. The reaction temperature is set between about 40 and about 100.degree. C., preferably between about 60 and about 80.degree. The use of alkaline catalysts can be dispensed with.

For the addition of acid amides, which carry at least one hydrogen atom on the nitrogen, to the vinyl sulfone compounds (formula I, X = -CH = cH2), mixtures of the components containing the amide in excess, in the presence of catalytic amounts of alkali, preferably in the presence of Sodium methylate, briefly heat to temperatures of 100 to about 200 ° C., preferably about 115 to about 140 ° C. It is advantageous to carry out this reaction in the presence of an inert organic solvent such as toluene or chlorobenzene. When using solvents, the reaction temperature can be lowered to about 50 to about 80 ° C., but the reaction time can then be several hours.

For the addition of alcohols, phenols and their thio derivatives, which may optionally have further substituents, the vinyl sulfone compounds (formula I, X = -CH = CH) are added in an excess of the hydrogen-active compound in question after adding a catalytic amount of alkali, e.g. in the presence of sodium methylate or concentrated sodium hydroxide solution, brought to reaction at about 40 to about 80 C.

The addition products of basic substituted alcohols, such as dimethylaminoethanol, diethylaminoethanol, di-n-butylaminoethanol or 1-dimethylaminopropanol-2, can be added to the toluenesulfonic acid or p-toluenesulfonic acid in the usual way by the action of alkylating agents such as alkyl halides, dimethyl sulfate, diethyl sulfate, benzyl halide or p corresponding quaternary ammonium compounds are further implemented.

Salts of sulphurous acid can be added by heating the vinyl sulfone compounds (formula I, X = -CH = CH2) in a mixture of water and dioxane in the presence of sodium sulfite to about 90 to about 100 ° C. and during the Reaction keeps the pH constant at about 9.5 by dropping in dilute mineral acid.

The compounds to be used according to the invention are colored yellow in crystalline form and show a strong blue to greenish-blue fluorescence in solution. They are suitable for the optical brightening of colorless substrates, especially in a mixture with violet-tinged blue fluorescent pyrazoline compounds of the following formula III.
EMI3.1

Suitable pyrazoline compounds of the formula III are known, for example, from Belgian Patent Nos. 631 367, 661 139, 670 161 and 701 986.

Particularly good lightening effects are achieved when the compounds of the formulas I and III carry the same radical for X, and when the compounds of the formula I are used in an amount of about 0.05 to about 10%, preferably about 0.5 to about 3 / o, are included in the mixtures. In terms of their lightening effect, these mixtures are clearly superior to the individual components with regard to the brilliance of the degree of whiteness. This surprising synergistic effect was found especially in materials made from polyamides, cellulose esters and from polyacrylonitrile.

The mixtures mentioned show a clear superiority over the individual components even in the most varied of application processes. This applies both to the optical brightening of high molecular weight substances, such as spinning and casting compounds, and to the addition of the brightening agents to household detergents and the like. In the case of lightening high molecular weight substances, the mentioned lightening agents can be added both to the monomers and to the polymers or polycondensates or polyadducts. It can also be advantageous in the case of spinning processes to apply the brightener to the tow after spinning, but before completion.

The lightfastness of the mentioned brightener mixtures correspond to those of the individual components.

Due to the variability of the compounds to be used according to the invention in the radical X, the affinity of the brighteners can be adapted to the most varied of materials. This applies in particular to the above-mentioned mixtures of compounds of the formulas I and III, which have the same radical X.

In this regard, the new compounds are far superior to the pyrazolines known from French patent 1 095 010.

The following examples illustrate the present invention.

   example 1
Household laundry made of polyamide 6 was washed a total of 10 times with a liquor containing 3 g / l tributylphenol polyglycol ether with 8 ethylene oxide in the molecule as a detergent and a mixture of the compound of the formula XXVIII known from Swiss patent 418 286
EMI8.1
in a concentration of 0.297%, based on the content of the detergent, and 0.003% of the compound of the formula XVII.

Even after the 1st wash cycle, a significant lightening of the laundry could be determined, which is significantly better than that obtained with the same concentration of the individual components of the specified mixture. Even after the laundry was washed 10 times and dried in between, it shows an excellent degree of whiteness, which does not show any waste due to accumulation.

   Example 2
Spinning mass made of polyacrylonitrile is dissolved as usual in dimethylformamide and 0.1% of an optical brightener, based on the weight of the polyacrylonitrile, is added, which is made from a mixture of 98 parts of the compound of the formula XXIX known from Belgian patent 631 367
EMI8.2
and 2 parts of a compound of Formula XVI.

After spinning, the polyacrylonitrile fiber material shows an excellent degree of whiteness, which is significantly higher than that which is obtained under otherwise identical conditions with the individual components of the specified mixture.

   Example 3
Polyacrylonitrile tow, which was spun out in a 30% solution of calcium chloride in water, was subsequently washed and rinsed in water. The last rinse bath at 30 C contains 2 g / l of a mixture of 96 parts of the compound of the formula XXX known from Belgian patent 670 161 as optical brightener
EMI8.3
and 4 parts of a compound of formula XIX. After a dwell time of 20 seconds, the cable treated in this way has an excellent degree of whiteness after drying, which is significantly better than that which is obtained under otherwise identical conditions with the individual components of the specified mixture.
