Description

Fig. 2 eine Draufsicht,
Fig. 3 eine Rückansicht, und

The invention relates to an additional mirror for a vehicle which has a three-jaw bracket on its rear side for fastening the same to an exterior vehicle mirror.

In vehicles, the exterior mirror is mainly used to record the traffic overtaking and those vehicles that are about to overtake. In conjunction with the vehicle interior mirror, it enables the driver to observe the traffic behind the vehicle. Between the area covered by the inside mirror and the area that can be seen via the outside mirror, there is an angular area known as the blind spot, which cannot be seen through any of these mirrors if the driver is in a normal posture. For better detection of the blind spot it is known to design an outside rearview mirror in two parts.

The mirror part facing the vehicle assumes the function of the normal rear-view mirror, while the mirror part facing away from the vehicle is bent so that it allows a view of the area to the side of the vehicle, such that the angle formed by the two mirror surfaces is greater than 1800.

Furthermore, exterior rear-view mirrors for vehicles are known which are attached to the mirrors commonly used. These additional rearview mirrors are placed, for example, when a caravan trailer is attached to the vehicle to extend the mirror arm so that the mirror protrudes laterally beyond the contour of the generally quite wide caravan. The attachment of the additional mirror to the vehicle mirror is often difficult.

The object of the invention is to create an additional mirror of the type mentioned at the beginning which automatically adapts to existing vehicle exterior mirrors and which can be securely and captively mounted on the vehicle mirror. To solve this problem, the invention proposes that two of the jaws are rotatably mounted on a pivotably attached plate, while the third jaw is attached to a pivot attached approximately in the center of the mirror by means of an adjusting screw running parallel to the mirror rear wall.

Such a construction is relatively simple, but nevertheless enables secure attachment to the exterior mirror present on the vehicle. Compared to other known three-point mountings, the direct attachment of the claws to the rear of the additional mirror is particularly favorable in the mirror according to the invention.

The additional mirror according to the invention can advantageously be designed as a two-part mirror which is provided with two mirror surfaces enclosing an angle, the larger of which is on the side of the mirror facing the vehicle. The two mirror surfaces can be separated from one another by a vertical strut, and the larger mirror surface can be flat, while the smaller mirror surface can be convexly curved. Such a mirror can be manufactured at low cost. The user can always easily see where a vehicle, the image of which he sees in the rearview mirror, is to the side of him because the distinction is made easier by the strut separating the mirror surfaces.

Due to the convex design of the outer mirror surface, the secondary image observed by it is reproduced to the driver in a reduced size, so that the angle recorded by the mirror is relatively large, while the main image recorded by the mirror surface facing the driver is normally reproduced without being reduced. The two mirror surfaces therefore have different reduction factors.

In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the adjusting screw running parallel to the rear wall of the mirror is mounted in the pivot pin and is provided with a screw head at its free end that does not project beyond the edge of the mirror.

The screw can rotate in a bearing in the screw head. The adjustment takes place in that the third jaw attached to the screw engages with its thread in the screw thread and can thus be moved on the screw.

The screw head can be equipped with an internal square. This gives a certain security against theft. The screw head, which does not protrude beyond the edge of the additional rearview mirror, can usually not be grasped and turned with pliers or a normal wrench. Disassembly is therefore only possible with a suitable Allen key.

The mirror back wall can have an indentation which is angled in plan view and in which the screw can be pivoted. This ensures that the rear of the additional rearview mirror comes as close as possible to the mirror surface of the exterior mirror on the vehicle, so that unnecessary gaps are avoided.

The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to the figures using a preferred exemplary embodiment.

Fig. 1 shows a view of the front of the additional mirror,
Fig. 2 is a plan view,
Fig. 3 is a rear view, and
4 schematically illustrates the effect of the additional mirror on a motor vehicle.

The additional rearview mirror shown is attached to the exterior mirrors normally found on vehicles.

It has a mirror enclosure 1 of approximately rectangular cross-section with rounded corners, which surrounds the edges of the mirror surfaces 2 and 3. The mirror surface 2 is flat, i.e. H. the image viewed through it is neither enlarged nor reduced, while the mirror surface 3 is convexly curved. This has the consequence that the image viewed through them is reproduced in a reduced size, but that the image section is enlarged compared to the proportions of the mirror surface 2.

The mirror surfaces 2 and 3, which are both perpendicular in the normal mirror position, enclose an angle a that is greater than 1800. This means that the mirror surface 3 does not form a direct extension of the mirror surface 2, but is bent at an angle to it . The two mirror surfaces 2 and 3 are separated from one another by a vertical strut 4.

To attach the additional rearview mirror shown on the rearview mirror of a motor vehicle, the additional rearview mirror is equipped with three jaws 5, 6, 7 that partially overlap the edge of the car rearview mirror and thus form a three-point bracket. The first two jaws 5, 6 are attached to pivot pins 9 at the two symmetrical corners of a plate 8 in the form of an isosceles triangle. They can thus be pivoted around the pivot pin. The pivot pins sit in elongated holes in the plate 8 and can be displaced in them. The slots each have two locking positions, so that the jaws 5, 6 can be set in different positions depending on the size and shape of the car rearview mirror. The plate 8 can be pivoted about the pivot point 10, which lies approximately at the apex of the triangle and to which it is attached to the rear side of the mirror 11.

Just like the center of gravity 10, the pivot pin 12 lies on the longitudinal axis of the mirror. The adjusting screw 13, which is secured against being pulled out on the back with a snap ring 14, passes through a bore in the pivot pin 12. The pivot 12 is rotatably attached to the mirror rear 11. At the end of the adjusting screw 13 is the screw head 15 with a square socket (not visible in the drawing) for inserting an Allen key. The adjusting screw 13 carries a threaded piece 16 to which the third jaw 7 is attached. By turning the screw head 15, the jaw 7 is thus adjusted in the longitudinal direction of the screw.

In order not to let the support structure for the additional mirror protrude so far backwards, an angular indentation 17 is provided on the rear of the mirror, within which the pivot pin 12 and the threaded part 16 move. In this way it is achieved that the jaw 7 is approximately the same distance from the mirror rear 11 as the jaws 5, 6.

With reference to Fig. 4, the principle of the additional rearview mirror shown will now be explained in detail. It is a schematic drawing that is not to scale.

The additional mirror, which is placed on the car mirror and held onto it by the three jaws 5, 6, 7, creates two different fields of view for the driver.

The first field of view 20 is generated by the mirror surface 2, which is plane and does not provide any enlargement or reduction. Despite the considerable size of the mirror, the field of view covers only a relatively small angle. The angled, convexly curved mirror surface 3 enables a more lateral space 21 to be recorded. The angle is relatively large because of the convex curvature and the associated reduction in size. The driver thus has the option of using the mirror surface 3 to determine whether he is being overtaken. He does not need to turn around for this purpose.
