Die erfmdungsgemässen N-Dimethylbenzylacetamidde-rivate entsprechen der Formel:

de Wirkung auf einjährige und winterharte Unkräuter in Sumpfreisfeldern ausüben, ohne aber auf Reispflanzen phy-totoxisch zu wirken. Überdies ist es für die N-Dimethylben-zylacetamidderivate der Formel I ganz charakteristisch, dass s sie winterharte riedgrasartige Unkräuter hochwirksam bekämpfen oder ausrotten.
Die N-Dimethylbenzylacetamidderivate der Formel I werden erfindungsgemäss hergestellt, indem man ein Essigsäurederivat der Formel:
worin X Wasserstoff, Methyl, Methoxy oder Chlor bedeutet, Rj eine Alkylgruppe mit 2 bis 7 Kohlenstoffatomen oder eine Cycloalkylgruppe mit 5 bis 7 Kohlenstoffatomen bedeutet und R2 Wasserstoff, ein Halogenatom, eine Alkylgruppe mit 1 bis 4 Kohlenstoffatomen oder Methoxy bedeutet oder R: und R2 zusammen eine Alkylengruppe mit 4 bis 6 Kohlenstoffatomen bilden, wobei R2 kein Halogenatom bedeutet, wenn Rj eine tertiäre Alkylgruppe ist.
Der oben verwendete Ausdruck «Halogenatom» soll Chlor, Brom, Fluor und Jod einschliessen.
Aufgrund von ausgedehnten Versuchen wurde festgestellt, dass die N-Dimethylbenzylacetamidderivate der Formel I starke herbizide Wirkungen gegen viele verschiedene Unkräuter aufweisen. So vermögen sie beispielsweise die folgenden einjährigen und winterharten Unkräuter durch Vor-auflauf-Bodenbehandlung oder Nachauflauf-Blatt- oder -Bodenbehandlung zu bekämpfen oder auszurotten: Grami-neae, wie Hühnerhirse (Echinochloa crus-galli), Fingergras (Digitaria sanguinalis) und grüne Borstenhirse (Setaria viridis), Cyperaceae, wie gelbes Cypergras (Cyperus esculentus), «nutsedge sp.» (Cyperus difformis), pupurnes Cypergras (Cyperus rotundus), Scirpus Hotarui, «slender spikerush» (Eleocharis acicularis), Cyperus serotinus und Eleocharis kuroguwai, Amaranthaceae, wie Bogenamarant (Amaran-thus retroftexus), Chenopodiaceae, wie weisser Gänsefuss (Chenopodium album), Polygonaceae, wie gemeiner Knöterich (Polygonum persicaria) und «curlydock» (Rumex japo-nicus), Pontederiaceae, wie Monochoria vaginalis, Scrophul-ariaceae, wie «false pimpernel» (Lindernia pyxidaria), Alis-mataceae, wie Pfeilkraut (Sagittaria pygmaea), Compositae, wie gemeiner Löwenzahn (Taraxacum officinale), Oxalida-ceae, wie Sauerklee (Oxalis corniculata) usw. Die herbizide Wirkung der erfmdungsgemässen Verbindungen erlaubt somit nicht nur das Bekämpfen und Ausrotten von Ackerunkräutern, sondern auch von Sumpfreisfeldunkräutern.
Besonders vorteilhaft ist es, dass die N-Dimethylbenzyl-acetamidderivate der Formel I verschiedenen Nutzpflanzen, wie z. B. Reis, Sojabohnen, Baumwolle, Mais, Erdnüsse, Sonnenblumen, Raps und Kartoffeln, sowie zahlreichen Gemüsearten, wie z.B. Kopfsalat, Kohl, Tomaten, Gurken und Karotten, keinen Schaden zufügen.
Demzufolge sind die erfmdungsgemässen N-Dimethyl-benzylacetamidderivate der Formel I als Herbizide für die Anwendung bei Feldfrüchten und Gemüsen sowie Sumpfreis brauchbar. Sie eignen sich ebenfalls als Herbizide für die Verwendung in Obstgärten, Rasen, Weideland, Teeplantagen, Maulbeerpflanzungen, Kautschukplantagen, Wäldern usw.
Die JP-OS Nr. 88 228/1973 und die US-PS Nr. 3 498 781 offenbaren gewisse Pivalinsäureamidderivate, deren chemische Struktur derjenigen der N-Dimethylbenzylacetamidde-rivate der Formel I etwas ähnlich ist und die eine herbizide Wirkung haben. Im allgemeinen ist aber die herbizide Wirkung der N-Dimethylbenzylacetamidderivate der Formel I besser als diejenige der bekannten Pivalinsäureamidderivate. Insbesondere ist daraufhinzuweisen, dass die N-Dimethyl-benzylacetamidderivate der Formel I, verglichen mit den Pi-valinsäureamidderivaten, eine ausserordentlich hohe herbizi-

Die Essigsäurederivate der Formel II können z.B. nach dem Verfahren hergestellt werden, das in Angew.Chem. 78, 932 (1966) und J.Chem.Soc. 1977, 694, beschrieben ist. Die 30 Dimethylbenzylaminderivate der Formel III können z. B. nach dem Verfahren erhalten werden, das in J.Am.Chem.-Soc. 71,3929 (1949), beschrieben ist.
Für die erfindungsgemässe Umsetzung können das Essigsäurederivat der Formel II oder sein reaktionsfähiges De-35 rivat und das Dimethylbenzylaminderivat der Formel III in ein Äquivalentverhältnis von 0,4 bis 1,5 : 1, vorzugsweise 0,5 bis 1,1 :1, verwendet werden. Die Reaktion kann in Gegenwart oder Abwesenheit eines inerten Lösungsmittels ausgeführt werden. Beispiele von inerten Lösungsmitteln sind 40 Kohlenwasserstoffe, wie Benzol, Toluol und Xylol, haloge-nierte Kohlenwasserstoffe, wie Chlorbenzol, Methylenchlorid, Chloroform und Tetrachlorkohlenstoff, Äther, wie Di-isopropyläther, Tetrahydrofuran und Dioxan, Alkohole, wie Methanol, Äthanol und Isopropanol, Ketone, wie Aceton, 45 Methyläthylketon und Methylisobutylketon, Ester, wie Äthylacetat, Nitrile, wie Acetonitril, Dimethylsulfoxyd, Di-methylformamid, Wasser usw. Von diesen Lösungsmitteln wird Benzol besonders bevorzugt. Die Reaktion kann innerhalb eines breiten Temperaturbereiches vom Gefrierpunkt so bis zum Siedepunkt des Lösungsmittels, vorzugsweise von 0 °C bis zum Siedepunkt des Lösungsmittels, ausgeführt werden. Erforderlichenfalls kann man kühlen oder erhitzen.
Als Essigsäurederivat der Formel II oder reaktionsfähiges Derivat davon können die freie Säure, das Säureanhydrid, 55 das Säurechlorid, das Säurebromid, die Säureester usw. verwendet werden. Je nach der Art des reaktionsfähigen Derivates kann ein geeignetes Reaktionshilfsmittel, wie ein Kondensationsmittel, ein Wasserabspaltungsmittel, ein säurebindendes Mittel oder ein Katalysator, in der Reaktion verwen-60 det werden. Im Falle der freien Säure kommen als Reaktionshilfsmittel beispielsweise Dicyclohexylcarbodiimid, Phosphorpentachlorid, Phosphortrichlorid, Phosphortribro-mid, Thionylchlorid, Natriumhydroxyd, Kaliumhydroxyd, Natriummethylat, Natriumäthylat, Triäthylamid, Pyridin, 65 Chinolin, Isochinolin, N,N-Dimethylanilin, N,N-Diäthyl-anilin, N-Methylmorpholin usw. in Frage. Bei Verwendung des Säurechlorides oder Säurebromides können Natriumhydroxyd, Kaliumhydroxyd, Natriummethylat, Natriumäthy-

lat, Triäthylamin, Pyridin, Chinolin, Isochinolin, N,N-Dimethylanilin, N,N-Diäthylanilin, N-Methylmorpholin, Natriumacetat usw., vorzugsweise Triäthylamin, als Reaktionshilfsmittel verwendet werden. Wenn ein Reaktionshilfsmittel verwendet wird, kann seine Menge im Bereich von einer katalytischen Menge bis 1,5 Äquivalenten, vorzugsweise 0,95 bis 1,1 Äquivalente, bezogen auf das bei der Reaktion aus den Ausgangsverbindungen zu eliminierende Material, liegen.
Die Rückgewinnung des Reaktionsproduktes aus dem Reaktionsgemisch kann in an sich bekannter Weise ausgeführt werden. Zum Beispiel wird das Reaktionsgemisch filtriert und/oder mit Wasser gewaschen, worauf das Lösungsmittel durch Destillation entfernt wird, um das Reaktionsprodukt, d.h. das N-Dimethylbenzylacetamidderivat der Formel I, zu erhalten. Gewünschtenfalls kann dieses Reaktionsprodukt in an sich bekannter Weise, beispielsweise durch Umkristallisation aus einem geeigneten Lösungsmittel, wie Benzol, Toluol, n-Hexan, Methanol, Äthanol, Chloroform oder Methylisobutylketon, gereinigt werden.
Praktische Ausführungsformen des Verfahrens zur Herstellung der N-Dimethylbenzylacetamidderivate der Formel I werden in den folgenden Beispielen erläutert.
Beispiel 1
100 ml Toluol, 9 g a,a-Dimethylbenzylamin und 5,8 g Pyridin wurden in einen 200 ml-Vierhalskolben gefüllt; 9,9 g a-Methyl-tert.-butylacetylchlorid wurden unter Rühren bei Raumtemperatur zugetropft. Das Rühren wurde 3 Stunden lang fortgesetzt. Das Reaktionsgemisch wurde mit Wasser gewaschen, um das Pyridinhydrochlorid zu entfernen. Nach dem Trocknen der Toluolschicht über wasserfreiem Natriumsulfat wurde das Lösungsmittel unter vermindertem Druck abdestilliert. Der erhaltene Rückstand wurde aus Äthanol umkristallisiert und ergab 13,8 g N-(a,a-Dimethyl-benzyl)-a-methyl-tert.-butylacetamid vom Schmelzpunkt 162,5 bis 163,5 °C.

Beispiel 2

Nach dem Trocknen der Benzolschicht über wasserfreiem Natriumsulfat wurde das Lösungsmittel unter vermindertem s Druck abdestilliert. Der erhaltene Rückstand wurde aus Äthanol umkristallisiert und ergab 13,5 g N-(a,a-Dimethyl-benzyl)-tert.-butylacetamid vom Schmelzpunkt 159 bis 160,5 °C.

15 Beispiel 3
1) 100 ml Benzol, 9 g a,a-Dimethylbenzylamin und 7,4 g Triäthylamin wurden in einen 200 ml-Vierhalskolben gefüllt; 13,3 g a-Bromisovalerylchlorid wurden unter Rühren bei Raumtemperatur zugetropft. Das Rühren wurde 3 Stunden
20 lang fortgesetzt. Das Reaktionsgemisch wurde mit Wasser gewaschen, um das Triäthylaminhydrochlorid zu entfernen. Nach dem Trocknen der Benzolschicht über wasserfreiem Natriumsulfat wurde das Lösungsmittel unter vermindertem Druck abdestilliert. Der erhaltene Rückstand wurde aus 25 Äthanol umkristallisiert und ergab 16,9 g N-(a,a-Dimethyl-benzyl)-a-bromisovaleramid vom Schmelzpunkt 128 bis 129,5 "C.

2) 150 ml Methylisobutylketon, 27,0 g a,a-Dimethylben-zylamin und 21,2 g Triäthylamin wurden in einen 500 ml-
35 Vierhalskolben gefüllt; 40,0 g a-Bromisovalerylchlorid wurden unter Rühren bei Raumtemperatur zugetropft. Das Rühren wurde 3 Stunden lang fortgesetzt. Nach Beendigung der Umsetzung wurden 200 ml Wasser zu dem Reaktionsgemisch zugesetzt und dieses allmählich erhitzt, um das Me-40 thylisobutylketon zu entfernen, und dann auf Raumtemperatur abgekühlt. Die ausgefällten Kristalle wurden abfiltriert, mit Wasser gewaschen, getrocknet und aus Äthanol umkristallisiert, wobei 51,9 g N-(a,a-Dimethylbenzyl)-a-bromisovaleramid erhalten wurden.

In der Praxis lassen sich die N-Dimethylbenzylacetamid-derivate der Formel I als solche oder in Form von beliebigen Präparaten, z.B. in Form von Granulaten, feinen Granulaten, Stäubemitteln, groben Stäubemitteln, Spritzpulvern, emulgierbaren Konzentraten, fliessfähigen Formulierungen, wässrigen Konzentraten oder öligen Suspensionen, anwenden.
Für die Herstellung solcher Präparate kann man feste oder flüssige Träger verwenden. Als feste Träger kommen beispielsweise mineralische Pulver, z.B. Kaolin, Bentonit, Ton, Montmorillonit, Talkum, Diatomeenerde, Glimmer, Vermiculit, Gips, Calciumcarbonat oder Apatit, pflanzliche Pulver, z.B. Sojabohnenpulver, Mehl, Holzmehl, Tabakpulver, Stärke oder kristalline Cellulose, hochmolekulare Verbindungen, z.B. Erdölharz, Polyvinylchlorid, Dammarharz oder Ketonharz, ferner Aluminiumoxyd, Wachs und dergleichen in Frage.
Als flüssige Träger kann man beispielsweise Kerosin, Alkohole, wie Methanol, Äthanol, Äthylenglycol oder Ben-zylalkohol, aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe, wie Toluol, Benzol, Xylol oder Methylnaphthalin, halogenierte Kohlenwasserstoffe, wie Chloroform, Tetrachlorkohlenstoff oder Monochlorbenzol, Äther, wie Dioxan oder Tetrahydro-furan, Ketone, wie Aceton, Methyläthylketon, Cyclo-hexanon oder Isophoron, Ester, wie Äthylacetat, Butylacetat oder Äthylenglycolacetat, Säureamide, wie Dimethylforma-mid, Nitrile, wie Acetonitril, Ätheralkohole, wie Äthylengly-coläthyläther, ferner Wasser und dergleichen verwenden.
Für die Emulgierung, Dispergierung oder für das Ausbreiten verwendbare oberflächenaktive Mittel sind beliebige nichtionische, anionische, kationische und amphotere Mittel. Beispiele solcher oberflächenaktiver Mittel umfassen Po-lyoxyäthylenalkyläther, Polyoxyäthylenalkylaryläther, Poly-oxyäthylenfettsäureester, Sorbitanfettsäureester, Polyoxy-äthylensorbitanfettsäureester, Oxyäthylen-Oxypropylen-Polymere, Polyoxyäthylenalkylphosphate, Salze von Fettsäuren, Alkylsulfate, Alkylsulfonate, Alkylarylsulfonate, Al-kylphosphate, Polyoxyäthylenalkylsulfate, quaternäre Ammoniumsalze und dergleichen. Man kann selbstverständlich auch andere oberflächenaktive Mittel verwenden. Nötigenfalls kann man als Hilfsmittel auch Gelatine, Casein, Na-triumalginat, Stärke, Agar, Polyvinylalkohoi oder dergleichen verwenden.
Bei der Herstellung der herbiziden Mittel kann der Gehalt an N-Dimethylbenzylacetamidderivaten der Formel I gewöhnlich im Bereich von 0,05 bis 95 Gew.-%, vorzugsweise von 3 bis 50 Gew.-%, liegen.
In den folgenden Beispielen werden praktische Ausführungsformen der erfmdungsgemässen herbiziden Mittel erläutert, wobei Teile und Prozente jeweils Gewichtsteile bzw. Gewichtsprozente sind.
Präparatebeispiel 1
50 Teile der Verbindung Nr. 4,2,5 Teile Dodecylbenzol-sulfonat, 2,5 Teile Ligninsulfonat und 45 Teile Diatomeenerde wurden unter Pulverisieren gut vermischt, wobei man ein Spritzpulver erhielt.

Präparatebeispiel 2 30 Teile der Verbindung Nr. 16,10 Teile eines Emulators («Sorpol SM-100» der Firma Toho Chemical Co., Ltd.) 15 und 60 Teile Xylol wurden gründlich miteinander vermischt, um ein emulgierbares Konzentrat herzustellen.
Präparatebeispiel 3 5 Teile der Verbindung Nr. 23, 1 Teil Weissruss, 5 Teile 20 eines Ligninsulfonates und 89 Teile Ton wurden unter Pulverisieren gündlich miteinander vermischt. Dann wurde das Gemisch gut mit Wasser geknetet, granuliert und getrocknet, wobei man ein Granulat erhielt.
25 Präparatebeispiel 4
30 Teile der Verbindung Nr. 30, 1 Teil Isopropylphos-phat, 66 Teile Ton und 30 Teile Talkum wurden unter Pulverisieren gründlich miteinander vermischt. Dann wurde das Gemisch mit Wasser geknetet, granuliert und getrocknet, um 30 ein Granulat herzustellen.
Präparatebeispiel 5 40 Teile Bentonit, 5 Teile eines Ligninsulfonates und 55 Teile Ton wurden unter Pulverisieren gründlich miteinander 35 vermischt. Hierauf wurde das Gemisch gut mit Wasser geknetet, granuliert und getrocknet, wobei man ein Granulat erhielt, das keinen Wirkstoff enthielt. Das Granulat wurde hierauf mit 5 Teilen der Verbindung Nr. 35, gelöst in Aceton, imprägniert. Durch nachfolgendes Entfernen des Ace-40 tons wurde ein Granulat erhalten.
Präparatebeispiel 6 95 Teile Bentonit mit einer Teilchengrösse von ca. 0,3 bis 1 mm wurden mit 5 Teilen der Verbindung Nr. 38, gelöst in 45 Aceton, imprägniert. Durch nachfolgendes Entfernen des Acetons erhielt man ein Granulat.
Die N-Dimethylbenzylacetamidderivate der Formel I können zusammen mit anderen Herbiziden verwendet werden, um ihre Wirkung als Herbizide zu verbessern. In gewis-50 sen Fällen kann auch eine synergistische Wirkung erwartet werden. Beispiele von beizumischenden Herbiziden sind Herbizide der Phenoxyreihe, wie 2,4-Dichlorphenoxyessig-säure, 2-Methyl-4-chlorphenoxyessigsäure und 2-Methyl-4-chlorphenoxybuttersäure (einschliesslich der Ester und Salze 55 davon); Herbizide der Benzoesäurereihe, wie 3,6-Dichlor-2-methoxybenzoesäure und 2,5-Dichlor-3-aminobenzoesäure; Herbizide der Diphenylätherreihe, wie 2,4-DichIorphenyl-4'-nitrophenyläther, 2,4,6-TrichlorphenyI-4'-nitrophenyläther, 2-Chlor-4-trifluormethyIphenyI-3'-äthoxy-4'-mtrophenyI-60 äther, 2,4-Dichlorphenyl-4'-nitro-3'-methoxyphenyläther, 2,4-DichlorphenyI-3'-methoxycarbonyl-4'-nitrophenyläther und Natrium-5-(2'-chlor-4'-trifluormethylphenoxy)-2-nitro-benzoat; Herbizide der Triazinreihe, wie 2-Chlor-4,6-bis-(äthylamino)-l,3,5-triazin, 2-Chlor-4-äthylamino-6-isopro-65 pylamino-1,3,5-triazin, 2-Methylthio-4,6-bis-(äthylamino)-1,3,5-triazin, 2-Methylthio-4,6-bis-(isopropylamino)-l,3,5-triazin und 4-Amino-6-tert.-butyl-3-methylthio-I,2,4-triazin-5-on; Herbizide der Harnstoffreihe, wie 3-(3,4-Dichlorphe-

Ausser den oben erwähnten herbiziden Stoffen lassen sich selbstverständlich auch noch andere Herbizide einsetzen.
Die erfmdungsgemässen Herbizide können auch zusammen mit Fungiziden, Insektiziden der Pyrethroidreihe, anderen Insektiziden, Pflanzenwachstumsregulatoren, Düngemitteln usw. verwendet werden.
Werden die N-Dimethylbenzylacetamidderivate der Formel I als Herbizide verwendet, so kann man sie vor oder nach der Keimung des Unkrautes in einer praktisch beliebigen Menge applizieren. Im allgemeinen beträgt die anzuwendende Menge ungefähr 0,1 bis 1 kg pro ha, vorzugsweise ungefähr 0,25 bis 5 kg pro ha.
Einige Versuche, die die herbizide Wirkung der N-Dime-thylbenzylacetamidderivate der Formel I zeigen, finden sich in den folgenden Beispielen, worin die Prozente jeweils Gewichtsprozente bedeuten.
Beispiel I
Ein Wagnertopf mit 14 cm Durchmesser wurde mit 1,5 kg Sumpfreisfelderde gefüllt und dann mit Wasser versetzt, um Sumpfreisfeldbedingungen einzustellen. Reissämlinge im s dreiblättrigen Wachstumsstadium wurden in den Wagnertopf verpflanzt; ferner wurden Samen von Hühnerhirse (Echinochloa crus-galli) und Scirpus Hotarui sowie Sprossanlagen von «slender spikerush» (Eleocharis acicularis), die den Winter überdauert hatten, in den Topf gesät. Dann wur-lo de die erforderliche Menge einer jeden Testverbindung auf die mit Wasser durchtränkte Erde aufgebracht. 25 Tage nach der Aufbringung wurden die herbizide Aktivität und die Phytotoxizität der Testverbindung in bezug auf die verpflanzten und ausgesäten Pflanzen und auf von selbst aufge-i5 gangene Monochoria vaginalis bestimmt. Die Resultate finden sich in Tabelle II.
Zur Anwendung wurde ein die erforderliche Menge der Testverbindung enthaltendes Spritzpulver mit Wasser verdünnt und in einer Menge von 10 ml/Topf mit einer Pipette 2o aufgebracht. Die herbizide Aktivität wurde mit Zahlen von 0 bis 5 bewertet.

Zur Bewertung der Phytotoxizität wurden jeweils drei Faktoren, nämlich die Höhe der Pflanze, die Zahl der Schösslinge und das gesamte Trockengewicht, bestimmt und 35 das Verhältnis der behandelten Gruppe zur unbehandelten Gruppe für jeden Faktor berechnet. Die Phytotoxizität wurde aufgrund des niedrigsten Wertes der drei Verhältnisse bewertet, die folgendermassen in Stufen von 0 bis 5 klassifiziert wurden.

Die Samen von Unkräutern, wie z.B. Fingergras (Digita-ria sanguinalis), Bogenamarant (Amaranthus retroflexus), die Sprossknollen von purpurnem Cypergras (Cyperus ro-tundus) und die Samen von Nutzpflanzen, wie z.B. Erdnüsse und Baumwolle, wurden jeweils in einen 10 cm-Blumentopf gesät und mit Erde bedeckt. Separat wurde die erforderliche Menge einer jeden Testverbindung zu einem emulgierbaren Konzentrat formuliert und mit Wasser verdünnt. Die verdünnte Wirkstofflösung wurde mit Hilfe einer Handspritze auf die Erde aufgebracht und die so behandelte Erde bis zu einer Tiefe von 2 cm von der Oberfläche der Erde vermischt. Sämtliche Unkräuter und Nutzpflanzen wurden in einem 20 Gewächshaus gezüchtet; die herbizide Aktivität und Phytotoxizität einer jeden Testverbindung wurde 20 Tage nach der Aufbringung bestimmt. Die Testresultate finden sich in der folgenden Tabelle III. Die herbizide Aktivität wurde mit Zahlen von 0 bis 5 bewertet. Die Phytotoxizität in bezug auf 25 die Nutzpflanzen wurde in gleicher Weise wie die herbizide Aktivität angegeben.
