Description

Process for the production of hard pitch agglomerates. It is common ground that the agglomeration of hard pitch coals is the process which gives the best results, but it involves the need for special apparatus and the observation of strict conditions in the manufacturing process.

By the usual process, the dry, finely ground pitch is mixed with the mass of the previously dried coal. This mixture is then introduced into a steam mixer, where, by means of an injection of superheated steam, the whole mass is brought to the melting temperature of the pitch.

The pitch entering into fusion forms with the coal dust a paste, which is introduced into the press where the briquettes or balls are molded.

It happens that if the temperature to which the mixture has been brought is a few degrees lower than the melting point of the pitch, when the mass passes through the press, the pitch no longer having the desired consistency, the agglomeration is not done and the balls fall broken from the press.

On the other hand, if the temperature of the mass at the time of its passage through the press is a few degrees higher than the melting point of the pitch, this mass leaves the press before the solidification of the pitch has taken place, and the balls are not not formed, they fall into a paste and fall apart.

It follows that the current manufacture of pitch balls requires great precautions and a continual adjustment of the temperature, the tolerance being excessively small.

The aim of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks by eliminating the steam heating devices and the need for prior drying of the coal.

According to the process, which is the object of this invention, at least one pulverulent material, for example a fuel, is cold mixed with ground hard pitch, and to the resulting mixture is added a sufficient quantity of water. to form a pasty mass, this mass being molded under pressure and the bodies, for example balls or briquettes; obtained, heated to the melting temperature of pitch, then cooled.

In about half an hour, this humidity is reduced to less than 5 /, and the briquettes or balls can be taken out from the dryer to be re-cooled either naturally in the open air or by means of a current of cold air. produced by a fan.
