Driving mechanism of the timing shafts in internal combustion engines with V cylinders. In internal combustion engines with V cylinders, is very often used when these engines have distribution shafts arranged parallel to the axis of the crank shaft (on the cylinders or in any other place), for setting these distribution shafts in motion from the crank shaft, chain transmissions which do not always work with the required precision, but which are preferred to gears because until now no solution has been found to avoid undesirable timing shaft speeds.
Indeed, the axes of the cylinders inclined towards each other, enclosing an angle of 60, and less opening; it is then not possible, by wedging on the crank shaft a single straight toothed wheel meshing with two pinions whose axes, perpendicular to those of the cylinders, are in the planes determined by these latter axes and by that of the crankshaft, to transmit to the timing shafts a number of revolutions which is not a multiple of that of the crankshaft, because the pinions meshing with this driving wheel touch each other as soon as they exceed a certain diameter which is in any case smaller than that of the aforementioned driving wheel.
Large bevel wheels on the timing shafts disfigure the machine and a large number of revolutions of the latter is not beneficial. It will be understood from the foregoing that the driving of the distribution shafts of motors of the type described by means of toothed wheels has been virtually abandoned.
The object of the present invention is a drive mechanism, by gear, of the distribution shafts of internal combustion engines of the aforementioned type, which does not involve the drawback mentioned. This denied Carlism is characterized in that it comprises a conical toothed wheel wedged on the crank shaft and driving, by means of a reference, shafts whose axes are in the planes determined by the axes of the cylinders and by that of the crank shaft, and which actuate the distribution shafts.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, in FIG. 1 in section, in FIG. 2 at the end, and only insofar as the understanding of the invention requires it, a form of e-_éeution of a mechanism according to the invention.
Referring to the drawing, on the intermediate shafts a, whose axes are in the planes determined by the axes of the cylinders of the V-shaped engine and by that of the crank shaft and moreover perpendicular to this shaft, are wedged two toothed pinions, conical h which mesh with a return pinion manufactured with a sleeve d which also carries pinion f. This pinion of = sending c receives its movement from a bevel gear e which is wedged on the crank shaft of the motor and which, in the particular case, comprises a second toothing in which the pinion i engages for a pump with oil.
The pinion f drives two similar g and h, one for the magneto, the other for an air compressor.
We see in this example that it is possible to give to :. intermediate shafts the number of revolutions required by the distribution shafts.
