Description

Roue d'engrenage.

Gear wheel. The present invention relates to a gear wheel, the teeth of which are constituted by a large number of links which each comprise at least two teeth and which are placed next to each other on the field and so staggered around the rim of wheel, at least part of these elements being made of vulcanized fiber, connecting rods passing through these elements and joining them together in the manner of the links of a multiple Galle chain.

This method of construction makes it possible to use wood to constitute the rim of the wheel and possibly its arms or its central part, and to economically execute silent gear wheels of as large a diameter as possible and, consequently, more durable than the leather or fiber sprockets recommended until now, the diameter of which was practically limited by the high price of the materials used and by the difficulties of manufacture.

The accompanying drawing by way of example shows an embodiment of a flat element or link and an embodiment of a gear wheel according to this invention.

There fig. 1 is an elevation of the link; Figs. 2 and 3 are partial longitudinal and transverse sections of the wheel.

The links 1 shown each have two teeth. They are made of vulcanized fiber. Placed on the field and juxtaposed in a suitable number, they make it possible to obtain a toothed conronne of any desired width. They are staggered and assembled using metal rods 2 which pass through them and whose ends are riveted.

The toothed crown thus formed in the manner of a multiple Galle chain rests directly on the periphery of the rim 5 which is circular and even. It is held on it by means of two annular cheeks 3, which extend to the sides of the crown and which are tightened towards each other by bolts 4.

The teeth, once worn or damaged, can be replaced easily and quickly. The side of each link which rests on the rim has a concave shape corresponding exactly to the curvature of the rim so that the link is well supported and resists as much as possible deformation under the action of the forces that the teeth will have to withstand.

The wheel shown is suitable, for example, for meshing with a metallic motor pinion rotating at high speed.

Instead of being composed exclusively of vulcanized fiber links, the toothing may include a variable number of metal lons, these being, for example, alternated with the fiber links. In the embodiment shown, the links are placed so that their juxtaposed teeth together form gear teeth parallel to the axis of rotation of the wheel. The links can also be slightly offset from one circular row to the next so that the graining teeth are oblique with respect to the axis of rotation as in helical wheels and chevron wheels.

Instead of cheeks, made of wood or metal, fixed to the rim, it is possible, in order to hold the links laterally, to use cheeks fixed to the latter, for example metal crowns suitably cut and assembled with the links by means of the same rods 2 which pass through these, or else metal links similar to those shown, but comprising extensions directed towards the center of the wheel and coming to rest against the sides of the rim, etc.

The rim and the arms of the wheel are preferably made of wood, which is advantageous from the point of view of weight, cost, noise etc. and is made possible by the fact that the vulcanized fiber teeth absorb shocks and tremors, which would quickly dislocate wooden gears with exclusively metal teeth.

Instead of having arms, the wheel can also be solid.
