G et 7 en sont respectivement des vues en plan et de côté; La fig. 8 est une vue de détail du méca nisme de commande de la machine;

Fig. 23 shows the disgorger end of the dispenser in side elevation (like Figs. 11 and 12) and also the action of metal as it exits the disgorger of the dispenser and during formation of the cast article.
The first embodiment (Fig. 1 to 8) comprises a rotating metal mold 9, mounted so as to be able to rotate, for example on ball bearings or other members of this kind, not shown in the drawings. The mold is surrounded by a sleeve 10 and com carries, behind this sleeve, a pinion 11 for controlling the mold. The jacket is arranged for cooling the mold by circulating water from one end to the other.
At its left end, the mold has a ring 12 which is used to support an annular bracket which can serve, for example, to prevent the loss of molten metal beyond the ends of the mold, or to hold in place a core for flaring the mold. end of the molten article, or to form a practical means of extracting the molten article, or for any other such purpose and in common foundry use. The jacket 10, in which the mold is mounted so as to prevent it from moving longitudinally with respect to the latter, is supported by a base 13, so as to allow the grout mold to be longitudinally on said base.
This machine comprises a distributor 14, consisting of an uncovered channel 15 which runs along the distributor. The mold 9 is arranged in the same axis as the distributor. At one of its ends, the distributor 14 is fixed to a support post 16 mounted on the base 13 and open in its upper part, as shown in FIG. 3, above the channel 15. The other end of the distributor comprises a part 17, made, for example, of molded hard carbon. This part 1.7 has a channel constituting the disgorger of the distributor which is shaped as shown in FIGS. 5, 6 and 7, and whose upper edges describe about a quarter of a turn of a very large pitch propeller.
As a result, when the molten metal is poured through the channel 1.5 of the distributor 1.4 to the disgorger, the metal is poured into the rotary mold 9, at a point located outside its axis.
A device is provided for continuously pouring molten metal into the end of the distributor which is retained in the post 16, so as to. obtain a continuous flow of the metal in the mold. This device includes a plate. rocker 18 mounted pivotably above the distributor, transverse to the apparatus, as indicated at 19, on a part 20 cantilevered on one of the ends of the upright 16; a reservoir 21, approximately in the form of a 90 ° cylinder segment pivotally mounted on the. rocking plate 1.8 by means of a device comprising two lateral projections which rest on two supports 22 (fi, -. \? and 4) and having in its upper part a discharge opening 23 which corresponds to a similar opening 24 of plate 18.
A helical gear 25 is keyed to the shaft 19 integral with the rocking plate 18 and a worm 26 is fixed to a vertical shaft 27 in engagement with the helical gear. To tilt the reservoir 21 which can take the position indicated at 21 'in FIG. 2, it suffices to give a rotational movement to the shaft 27, which then tilts the plate 18 which carries the reservoir.
In order to be able to ensure that the quantity of metal supplied by the reservoir 21 to the distributor 14 always compensates exactly from the beginning to the end of each casting, the quantity of metal discharged at the same time by the disgorger of the distributor, the dimensions of the discharge opening 23 of the reservoir, the cross section of the reservoir for all the positions which it can occupy by pivoting with the plate 18 on the shaft 19 and the sliding speed of the mold are exactly proportioned.
The two side walls of the tank are parallel and perpendicular to the pivot axis, the wall which is in contact with the plate 18 is flat and the wall which is opposite to it is cylindrical and has its axis of curvature coinciding with the pivot axis of the plate 18. As a result, at all degrees of inclination of the tank 21 during movement from its normal position to the position indicated 21 'in FIG. 2, the level of molten metal in the tank always has a constant area.
The continuous tilting movement of the reservoir during the continuous sliding of the mold 9 to the left of FIG. 1, after the start of the casting, is determined by means of a positive control device which comprises the helical gear 25, the worm 26, and the vertical shaft 27, an angle gear 28 integral with key l lower end of the shaft 27, an angle pinion 29 engaged with the angle pinion 28 and integral with a horizontal shaft 30, an angle pinion 31 integral with the other end of the shaft 30, an angle pinion 32 in engagement with the angle pinion 31 and arranged to rotate with a transverse shaft 33 and a spur gear, not visible in the drawings, integral with the shaft 33 and in engagement with a rack 34 integral with the lower part of the sleeve 10 which supports the mold 9.
In order to be able to tilt the reservoir 21 so that the metal is poured into the mold as soon as it begins to slurry, the reservoir 21 is previously slightly inclined to fill the channel 15 of the dispenser from end to end. 'Another, so as to determine an overflow in the disgorger at the instant when the mold begins to slide to the left of FIG. 1. This device shown in FIG. 8 has a key 35 which is fixed to the shaft 33 and has a certain clearance in a circular groove formed in the pinion 32.
As a result, by starting to put the mechanism into action at the start of a casting, the shaft 30 and hence the pivot pin 19 rotate slightly before the shaft 38 begins to rotate. , after which, however, shaft 33 rotates constantly with shaft 30.
To make it possible to determine exactly, immediately before starting a casting, the instant at which the reservoir 21 is filled to the maximum necessary, a part 37 is fixed to the reservoir, constituting the arm or plunger of a spring scale 39 comprising a fixed dial 40 with appropriate calibration on which an indicator needle 41 is moved by the arm or plunger 38 indicating the weight of the metal contained in the tank. In this way, it is easy to determine the exact contents of the tank, and even when the refractory lining of the tank has patches of prematurely solidified metal adhering to it, as can happen after several pours, the weight of the tank can be taken into account. these adherent plots using the spring scale in accordance with the well known principles of tare calculation.
In order to make it possible to accelerate .1a, the flow rate of the metal through the disgorger of the distributor, a device is provided for inclining the entire apparatus with respect to the horizontal hori zontal, and for maintaining the apparatus in this inclination during casting. This positive device comprises a central pivot support 42 and two members 43 arranged at the ends of the device and of adjustable height.
Fig. 9 shows as a variant of detail an end of the distributor which is slightly different from that shown in FIG. 6; the difference lies mainly in the fact that the part 17a has side walls which form the channel 42 which constitutes the extension of the channel 15 of the distributor 14. These walls are curved key so as to pour the molten metal into the mold 9 in the direction indicated by arrow 43, that is to say perpendicular to a generatrix of the interior wall of the mold. The base of the channel 42 is approximately flat and lies in the same plane as the base of the channel 15.
Another variant of detail is shown in FIG. 10. The channel 42 'of the part 17b at the outlet of the distributor 14 also comprises a flat base, like the base of the channel 42 of FIG. 9, but the curve of this channel in plan is such that the metal is discharged towards the mold in the direction indicated by arrow 44, that is to say obliquely with respect to a generatrix of the interior wall of the mold.
The discharge parts shown in fig. 9 and 10 differ from each other essentially by the direction of arrival of the metal with respect to the walls of the mold 9, the direction indicated by arrows 43 (fig. 9) and 44 (fig. 10); but the distinction of primary importance lies in the fact that, while the flow current of the device of the. fig. 9 is located in a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the mold 9, the flow current of the device shown in FIG. 10 is located in a plane inclined relative to a plane perpendicular to said axis of rotation of the mold. This device, represented by FIG. 10 is what, in practice, gave the best results.
In the second embodiment of the apparatus (fig. 11), the rotary mold 45 is mounted, to facilitate rotation, on ball bearings 46. These ball bearings are similar to those described in patent N 89981, and which are arranged so as to avoid jamming of the parts when the mold expands radially to a greater degree than its support bearing, as has happened in practice. This support is integral with a jacket 47 comprising an annular chamber 48 by means of which the hen can be constantly cooled by circulating water from one end to the other.
At its left end, the mold has a ring 49 which forms the end wall chu pipe. At its right end, the mold has a shaped part 50 to form the outer surface of the flared end (bell) of the pipe and to hold a flare core 51 and its support 52.
The chamber 47 is supported for axial sliding movement relative to a base 53 and to a distributor 54, by four swivel casters 55, mounted on the sleeve and moving on the rails 57 which form part of the base 53.
The device which determines this sliding movement of the sleeve 47, which will be referred to hereinafter as the envelope of the mold 47, comprises a cylinder 58 secured to the base 53 and comprising an annular piston 59 and a hollow piston rod 60 of which the outer end is fixed to a support 61 integral with the casing of the mold.
Devices not shown in the drawing are provided for admitting water at will to the right or left side of the piston to determine and regulate the reciprocating movements of the mold shell.
As seen in fi-. 17, the support 61 is hollow and communicates with the piston rod 60 and a pipe 62. Water is constantly supplied to the pipe 62 by the piston rod 60, which is itself supplied by a pipe 63 surrounded by the piston 59 and the piston rod. This pipe is fixed by one of its ends to the base 53 as indicated in FIG. 11; the other end (not visible) is open inside the piston rod so that, when the water is brought into the pipe 63 through the opening 6.1, it is discharged into the holder. hollow 61, regardless of the movement or the. position of the mold casing 47.
The pipe 62, at its exit from the hollow support 61, communicates (Fig. 17 and 18) with the pipes 65 and 65a going. to a valve 66 and thence to a short line 67 terminating at the. annular chamber which surrounds the mold. This water fills said chamber, and the overflow flows through a drain port 68 (Fig. 11), as described in patent No. 89981.
The rotation of the mold is also operated by hydraulic force. The control mechanism comprises a Pelton wheel 69 fixed to the mold and actuated (fig. 17 and 19) by a nozzle 70 communicating with the hollow support 61 via the pipes 71, 72, 73 and 74. The water flows through the drain hole 75 (fig. 11).
The distributor 54 of this com system carries a longitudinal channel 76 extending from one end to the other, and provided at its end with a part 77 acting as a disgorger. The dispenser is mounted fixed on the base. The drainer 77 is constructed, as explained above, in accordance with the principles of FIG. 10; it is represented on an enlarged scale in figs. 12 and 13.
As shown in fig. 11, the free end of the disgorger can be slightly bent downwards. The continuous supply of the metal channel 76 is made by a reservoir 78 having substantially the shape of a segment of cylinder of 90. This reservoir 78 is fixed to a pivoting shaft 79, supported by bearings at the upper part of the lateral uprights 80 connected by the cross members 81 and 82, to which the adjacent end of the distributor is attached. The device for gradually lifting the reservoir 78 comprises an arm 83 fixed on the pivot shaft and pivoting on the free end of a piston rod 84 depending on a hydraulically controlled piston 85 which operates in a cylinder. 86 pivotally mounted (fig. 16).
It is true that in this method of lifting the tank, the movement of the piston 85 at a constant degree of speed does not tilt the tank absolutely evenly, because the free end of the arm 83 describes an arc when the tank is raised and lowered between its limits of movement.
The chord of this arc being vertical as shown in fig. 22, to which reference may also be made to follow this description, it follows that, while the udder moves at a uniform speed, the speed of the tilting movement of the tank begins to gradually decrease, then increases. lies gradually when passing from one extreme position to another; but this drawback can easily be overcome by shaping the refractory lining so as to compensate for the curved wall of the tank as indicated at 78 'of FIGS. 16 and 22.
In order to neutralize the tendency of the reservoir 27 to tilt more and more rapidly as it empties, due to the progressive reduction in the weight acting on the piston 85, it is possible, for example, to install an adjustable counterweight 87, as shown in fig: 16. This counterweight is mounted on a bar 88 fixed to the tank, so as to be located vertically below the pivot shaft when the tank is in its position of. charge.
To facilitate the manufacture of large-dimension pipes, for example 6 m by 35 cm in diameter, 12 distributor, which is mounted fixed only at the end and must have great rigidity from one end to the other, is cooled by circulating water on both sides and below the channel 76. This cooling can be applied in accordance with the system and principles described in connection with the cooling of the trough or trough, in patent No. 89981.
On the other hand, for the manufacture of pipes of relatively small diameter, such as, for example, 3.60 m by 10 cm in diameter, a system such as that shown in FIGS. 12 and 14.
This distributor cooling system comprises an external tubular part 89 provided, at its upper part with a longitudinal opening making it possible to weld for example with autogen, against the lateral edges of this opening a casing 90 formed, for example, made of thin sheet metal and which extends almost over the entire length of the distributor. This envelope contains the material 91 in which the channel 76 is formed.
Between the casing 90 and the outer tubular part 89 is formed a liner, the cross section of which has substantially the shape of a U. In the lower part of the chamber, below the casing, there is a pipe 92 which s' stretches the entire length of the room. One end of this pipe receives the cooling water from an inlet pipe 93 and the other end opens near the outlet of the distributor. The cooling water is exhausted through pipes 9.4.
In order to be able to pour the molten metal, contained in the reservoir 78, into the distributor, at a high speed, without it being necessary to tilt the whole machine towards the disgorger of the distributor, the discharge channel 95 of the reservoir is raised above the receiving end of the distributor, and an inclined channel is disposed on the distributor in the desired position to receive the metal discharged from the tank and conduct it in a continuous flow into the channel < B> 76, through which it flows in a current of constant cross section, during the rotational and axial movement of the mold. For this purpose, it is preferable that the inclined channel goes gradually decreasing in width towards the bottom.
The bottom of the inclined channel 96 is flat at its upper part, then gradually takes over. shape of a curve which matches that of the bottom of channel 76 at the receiving end of the dispenser, as shown in FIG. 12.
In this connection, we have found that, although it is to be recommended to coat the interior of the reservoir 78 with refractory material, as explained in connection with FIG. 1, perfectly satisfactory results are obtained by constituting the internal surface of the channel 96 and the distributor 54 in cast iron, coated with ordinary plumbagine or plom bagine mixed with verized pulverized carborundum.
At the start of pouring a pipe, the disgorger is at the end of the mold, the mold shell is stationary and the mold rotates in the direction of arrow 97 (Fig. 23). Then as soon as the flared part of the pipe is formed, the relative movement of the casing of the mold and of the distributor begins, the piston 59 being in action for this purpose; the flow of metal naturally continues uniformly, until the mold casing has reached far enough in the direction of arrow 98 so that the disgorger is towards the left end of the latter and the pipe can be finished.
During this movement by which the flared end of the mold moves away from the distributor disgorger, the pipe is gradually formed by the constant deposition of new metal in the mold, as approximately indicated by the dotted line 99.
Consequently, most of the metal accumulates on the side of the flared end of the pipe, which runs away from the drainer, in other words most of the metal accumulates on the hot metal already deposited. which prevents the latter from solidifying prematurely against the walls of the mold which are cooled by the circulation of water, and prevents the formation of surface ridges on the outer face of the pipe. It follows. that the outer surface of the pipe is absolutely smooth and almost icy.
Further, by thus tilting the disgorger at an oblique angle to a plane perpendicular to the axis of the mold, the metal is discharged in such a way that the. the most oxidized part of the fresh metal 100 poured into the mold is deposited and remains on top of the layer of metal previously deposited 101. Part 1a. purer of the metal casting 10-2, that is to say that which flowed in the bottom of the channel 78 of the distributor, is the only one to come into contact with the mold.
The iron oxides or other impurities in the metal charge are deposited in or on top of the previously deposited hot metal layer, and the interior irregularities, knots and crusts disappear. To illustrate this point as clearly as possible, the casting 102 and the metal 100 have been designated in FIG. 23 by hatching which is all the more accentuated as the metal is less pure. The half-spherical protuberances which were also mentioned above can also be avoided by making use of a device constructed according to the principles of fig. 11.
Thanks to the rapidity of the flow 102 determined by the inclined channel 96, the formation of vortices of fine particles of molten metal all around the flow 102, which are the determining cause of the semi-spherical protuberances, is avoided. which is found inside the pipes when using the device according to fig. 1. When vortices of fine particles form, they partially cool and solidify, and when they settle on the already partially cooled inner surface of the forming pipe, they form small protrusions. .
The best results are obtained when the flow velocity is extremely high, especially if the members are arranged such that the section of the casting 102 is reduced compared to the section of the casting passing through the channel 76 of the distributor in. the proportion indicated by the broken-line circles 103 and 104, the former corresponding to the approximate area of the section of the channel flow.
By exposing and discussing above the preferable arrangement of the distributor cooling system, according to fig. 12 and 14, it has been explained that such a cooling system was recommended for pipes of relatively small diameter, for example 10 cm; It is obvious that the smaller the diameter of the pipe, the smaller the outer diameter of the part of the distributor which enters the mold during the casting operation.
However, to increase the strength of the distributor's disgorger when it is desired to make pipes with an even smaller diameter, such as for example 5 cm, a support device can be provided for the end of the distributor adjacent to the disgorger. In this device, said end of the distributor is supported by the mold without being in direct contact with it.
With reference to fig. 12 and 13, a pair of collars are fixed to the distributor, one being integral with the disgorger 77 and the other, 105, being fixed on the tubular part 89. In addition, a ring or idler roller 106, interposed between the two collets is arranged so as to rotate freely:
relative to the dispenser during the entire casting operation. - To prevent, under the effect of centrifugal force, the molten metal accidentally escaping from the disgorger and spilling out outside the device when the mold casing 47 in fig. 11 and 17 has reached the extreme limit of its movement to the right and when the disgorger is placed at the left end of the grinding wheel, once the pipe is finished, a device is provided consisting of a cover 107 bolted to the casing of the mold, and a collecting basin 108 provided with handles 109 allowing it to be suspended at will from the hooks 110 fixed to the cover.
In the forms of machines described above for carrying out this method, the speed of flow of the metal and the inclination of the jet of the latter with respect to the inner periphery of the mold, as well. that the direction of rotation thereof are such that all the metal arriving on the wall of the mold spreads by its own inertia thereon, until the combined effect of the cen trifuge force and of the intermolecular friction in the metal acts so as to immobilize the latter with respect to the metal already deposited.
The distributor does not need to be coaxial with the mold. When the distributor is not coaxial with the mold, it is not necessary to use a curved or curved disgorger, the metal then being without other means discharged next to the axis of the mold. .
The inclination of the axis of the mold can vary from 0 to 90.
