Description

Totalisateur.

Totalizer. The object of the invention is a totalizer. It comprises, for each order of units of the numbers to be added, a group of moving parts moving from a rest position, under the control of a representation of the figure that presents in this order of units a number to add, of quantities whose sum corresponds to, the relative value of this figure, thus:

-a movable positive dis producing the successive return to their rest position of the displaced movable parts which then communicate to Lin the movable member successive movements whose sum again corresponds to the relative value of the figure, so that this organ adds up by his movements this value relative to those he could record previously in the same way.

The attached demin represents, by way of example, one embodiment of the totalizer.

Fig. 1 relates to the control of this embodiment; Figs. 2 and 3 are a front view and a partial side elevation of the above embodiment; Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views. The embodiment shown is tinée to totalize .numériques da decimal system indications carried by cards in the form of perforations.

For each number (unit, ten, hundred, etc.) of any indication it is provided on the cards, as in fig. 1 shows it; four columns 1, 2; 3, 4 each intended to present a perforation which, depending on the column where it is found, has a different value ranging from 1 to 4. It is possible in this way to represent the figures 1 and 2 by a perforation, the figures 3 to 5 with two perforations, and the numbers 6 to 9 with three perforations. Zero is indicated by the absence of perforations.

The cards the details of which are to be added are introduced into an electrical contact device, comprising as many series of four contact fingers as there can be numbers (units, tens, hundreds, etc.) at the maximum in these. indications; when the fingers can penetrate a perforation, it closes an electrical circuit and thereby controls this embodiment.

For each figure of the indications, said embodiment has four electromagnets al a2 as a4 (fig. 2 and 3 @ whose circuit is closed when the corresponding contact finger penetrates a perforation of a card.

Opposite each electromagnet is an armature b 'or b2 b3 b4 carried by one of the arms of an elbow lever cl or c c3 c4, the other arm of which moves between two stops such as dl and el limiting the lever stroke and which is subjected to the action of a return spring f 1 or f 2 f 3 f4. Each lever cl or c2 c3 c4 is fitted with a c5 hook now normally in a rest position one arm g1 or g2

9 3 9 4 capable of rotating on an axis 1a common to all the arms, in the direction of movement effected by the needles of a clock, under the action of springs not shown. If one of the arms is released, it therefore moves from left to right until it comes up against a stop such as it. Now the relative value of the angle that he then describes is 1 for the arm y ', 2 for the arm g2, 3 for the arm g3 and 4 for the arm g4,

so that the value of a perforation of the chosen horizontal row of the card is thus automatically noted in the totalizer by the excitation of the corresponding electromagnet al ... ca4.

It now remains to record the sum of the perforation values of a row of cards. For this purpose, the arms g1. . . g4 are successively returned to their rest position and actuate in doing so a member moving successively by a quantity proportional to the value corresponding to each of them.

This member is formed by the axis h on which are wedged four identical ratchets j1 j2 j3 j4 (fig. 2, 3 and 4) of ten teeth on each of which acts a pawl such as lcl, pivoted in k 'on the arm g1 ... g'4 corresponding and subjected to the action of a res sort such as dl subjected in 15 to this arm.

The arrangement of the ratchet and the pawl is such that the former is not driven when the arm moves from left to right and that it is, on the contrary, when this arm moves from right to left. On one of the ratchet, j l, there is also a bare retaining pawl m, subjected to the action of a -spring rz and intended to prevent any untimely rotation of the axis h. If one of the arms turns from right to left, it turns one of the ratchets and this axis h of one tooth, of two, three or four teeth as the case may be.

The return of the arms g1. . . g4 in their rest position takes place by means of cams 0l 02 03 04 with which they are fitted and with which they successively come into contact with the stops pl p '@ p3 p4 of a rotating ring p, when the latter rotates in the direction of movement of the hands of a watch. The stops 1) 2 p3 are directly fixed on either side of the ring and act respectively on the cams o2 o3 without touching the others.

On the other hand, the stops p1 1p4 are carried by one of the branches of parts in L, as is) :, secured to either side of the ring p and respectively actuate the cams 0 '04 without coming in contact. with the others. The cams 01 ... 04 are moreover shaped so that the corresponding stops Pi ... p4 cease to act on them, as soon as the arms y '. . . 94 have returned exactly to their rest position where they are again retained by the ratchets c5.

The axis h is integral with a drum cc por both at its periphery the numbers 0 to 9 and on its right face titi finger iv 'engaging in the passage with a toothed wheel .x of ten teeth, which it makes then turn one tooth. The wheel x meshes with a wheel y also having ten teeth, set on an axis z and corresponding to the higher order of decimal units: If h, is the axis of the units, the axis z will be that of the tens .

On the r axis are again four ratchets with ten teeth identical to j 1 and action born during the return to rest of four arms identical to g1 ... g4 and placed under the dependence of four electromagnets identical to al ... a4 and controlled by the perforations in the row of cards corresponding to the tens of the indications. This axis z, each time it makes a turn, makes a tenth of a turn to a following shaft corresponding to the hundreds, also actuated during the return to the; rest position of four other arms and so on.

The embodiment shown is designed to total digital indications up to millions, so that there are seven similar devices each comprising four electromagnets, four arms, four ratchets, an axis, a drum, a - ring such as p carrying four stops. The seven rings are wedged on a common shaft 1, so that by rotating it, all the arms are brought back to their rest position. This return of the arms can however only take place successively for the various groups, so that the springs of a group corresponding to a decimal unit of lower order (unit for example) to the group of the decimal unit of order directly higher (ten for example) is not hindered.

For this purpose, the groups of stops are offset from one ring to the next by a seventh of a turn and are arranged so that from a common rest position of the rings the returns of the arms take place successively in the order of the decimal units to which the groups correspond: units, then tens. then hundreds, etc.

Fig. 2 only shows the ring 1) corresponding to the units, but we have also indicated on it, in order to clearly mark the distribution of the groups on the various rings, the stops q1 q2 q3 and q4 (the last two are in outside the limits of the sketch) rl r 2 r3 and 2.4 @ s1 s2 ss and s4,

il t2 t3 and t4, 2.c1 u2 u3 and u4, v1 v2 v3 and v4 rings corresponding to tens, hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, millions . In each group, the stops are distributed in the same way.

The operation of this form of execution is as follows: Suppose, for example; that the indication of the card includes a number of 7 in the units, which is marked by a perforation in each of the columns of value 1, 2 and 4 in the group or row of units. When the card passes through the contact device, the circuits of the electromagnets ai a2 a ° are closed.

They attract simultaneously or - almost simultaneously their armatures b1 b2 64 and release the arms 9l 9 2 g4 which turn clockwise under the action of their springs to come to rest on the stops such as it and occupy the positions indicated in dotted lines in fig. 2; the notation in the counter of the values 1, 2, 4 corresponding to the mentioned perforations is thus carried out and the card then leaves the device.

At this time, the ring p is operated by hand or otherwise and moves in the direction of the clockwise movement. The stop pl first comes into contact with the cam o 'and returns the arm g1 to the rest position thereof, while rotating the ratchet j 1 and the axis h of a tooth. Then, the stopper p2 hits the cam o2 and turns the arm g2 from right to left, until it is again in the rest position while moving the ratchet j2 and the axis h two other teeth.

The stopper p3 does not act, since the arm g 'has remained in its rest position, but the stopper p4, on the other hand, pushes the cam 04 from right to left and brings the arm g4 back to the rest position while still doing turn the ratchet j4 and the axis h of four other teeth.

When the three arms g1 g2 g4 have been thus brought back, the ratchets j1 j j4 and the axis h have turned by seven teeth in total, that is to say by the number corresponding to the figure indicated through the perforations in the row of card units.

If the next card bears an indication containing, in the row of units, perforations corresponding to a number 3 or more, similar operations take place and this number is noted in the totalizer. In addition, when the arms return to their rest position, the ratchets complete a first revolution corresponding to ten units and the h axis rotates the 7 </ I> a tenth of a turn.

In the event that a card presents numerical indications containing in each of the rows units, tens, etc., or in several of these, perforations representing one digit or another, it causes simultaneously or almost simultaneously to its switchover of the circuits of the desired electromagnets of all the corresponding devices, so that the desired values are noted in the totalizer.

When the axis 1 and all the rings such as p are subsequently rotated, one starts by producing the recording of the units on the drum u- and possibly the transfer of ten to the drum of the tens of the axis .r, then the recording of the tens on this last drum and, if necessary, the transfer of a hundred on the drum of the following axis of the hundreds; Hundreds are then recorded on the desired drum and so on successively up to the millions. As soon as Ar ber 1 has made a complete revolution, the entire digital indication carried by the card is recorded on the totalizer drums.

The use of four columns by groups of columns on the cards and of four electro-magnets in each device makes it possible to go beyond the figure of 10 per group, up to a maximum of 15; it suffices for that to give to the perforations of the third column the value & 4 instead of 3 and to the perforations of the fourth column the value 8 instead of the value 4. If you want to go further, for example up to at 20 or 24, five columns are used per group and five electromagnets; in this case, the maximum number reached is 31, if the desired values are assigned to the different columns of perforations. It is obvious that we can go even further by using a larger number of columns per group.

Such measures can be taken if, for example, it is a question of adding sums in English currency, where the pound sterling has 20 shillings and each shilling 12 pence.

The columns of the cards could just as easily be replaced by rows. Numerical indications may not be carried by cards in the form of perforations.

The control of the arms for the notation of the values indicated by the cards can take place in a way other than electromagnetically, for example mechanically, pneumatically.

CLAIM: Totalizer, characterized in that it comprises, for each order of units of the numbers to be added, a group of moving parts moving from a rest position, under the control of a representation of the figure that presents in this order of units a number to be added, of quantities the sum of which corresponds to the relative value of this figure, as well as a mobile device producing the successive return to their rest position of the displaced moving parts which then communicate successive movements to a mobile organ, the sum of which again corresponds to the relative value of the figure, so that this organ adds by its movements this relative value to those which it was able to record previously in the same way. SUB-CLAIMS 1 Totalizer according to claim, characterized in that it is arranged so that the successive return of the moving parts of a group takes place at a time different from that when the successive return of the parts of a group occurs. another group corresponding to the order of units immediately neighboring, in order that the transfer of a group to the neighbor is not hindered. 2 Totalizer according to claim and sub-claim 1, characterized in that the mobile device producing the returns comprises for each group a member giving rise to these returns, the organs of the various groups being simultaneously born action, but only giving rise to successive ment to the returns in each group and at different times according to the groups. 3 Totalizer according to claim, charac terized in that the moving parts tend to rotate around an axis under the action of another member, but are normally prevented by pivoting parts which release them, however, when these der These are moved by electromagnetic devices placed under the dependence of a representation of the figure presented by the number to be added in the order of units to which the group corresponds. 4 Totalizer according to claim and sub-claim 3, characterized in that the moving parts each actuate a ratchet, wedged on a shaft common to all the ratchets of the group and constituting with them the movable member mentioned in the claim, when they return to their resting position. 5 Totalizer according to claim and sub-claims 1, 2, characterized in that the successive returns of the moving parts of a group to their rest positions are produced by stops carried by a rotary member each acting on one of these parts and distributed over it so as to successively give rise to the various returns. 6 Totalizer according to claim and sub-claims 1, 2, 5, characterized in that the rotary members of the various groups are integral with each other and in that. that the stops are divided into groups all offset with respect to each other. 7 Totalizer according to claim and sub-claims 1 to 6, as described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
