Une forme d'exécution de l'objet de l'in vention est représentée, à titre d'exemple, dans le dessin ci-annexé, dans lequel: La fig. 1 est une élévation latérale de la machine au repos; La fig. 2 est une coupe de la machine dans la position de coulée; La fig. 3 est une coupe suivant la ligne 3-3 de la fig. 2; La fig. 4 est un plan de la machine telle qu'on la voit dans la fig. 2;
La fig. 5 est, à plus grande échelle, une coupe horizontale suivant la ligne 5-5 des fig. 1 et 6 et représente le dispositif à sou papes réglant l'admission de l'air comprimé pour la chambre de pression ou le plongeur; L a fig. 6 est une coupe verticale longi tudinalement à la machine, suivant la. ligne 6-6 des fig. 4, 5 et 7; La fig. 7 est une coupe verticale suivant la ligne 7-7 des fig. 1 et 6; La fig. 8 est une vue perspective de l'or gane d'actionnement montré dans les fig. 1 et 4, pour le dispositif à soupapes contrôleur d'air représenté dans les fig. 5, 6 et 7;
Lorsque l'on fait décrire à la poignée de man#uvre 84 les quatre-vingt-dix autres de grés jusqu'à la position montée dans la fig. 4, afin de compléter le demi-tour de l'arbre à came 82, la position des soupapes pour le cy lindre 15 qui actionne la chambre de pression 3, n'est pas changée; mais la position des sou papes pour le cylindre 37 actionnant la ma trice est complètement changée, comme on le comprend d'après l'examen dés fig. 9 et 11;
on pourrait continuer son mouvement dans la même direction pour compléter la rotation et avec le même résultat. A- vec le retour de la poignée 84 à sa position initiale, toutes les soupapes sont de nouveau actionnées mais dans l'ordre inverse, de sorte que d'abord les sections de matrice 23 et 24 sont desserrées et écartées de la tubulure 5, et ensuite la chambre de pression 3 qui a été déclanchée par le préposé, est amenée de la position de coulée à la. position d'immersion de la tubu lure 5;
This invention relates to die casting machines, particularly for die casting aluminum and other similar metals which heretofore have given rise to difficulties in making them into die castings known as " die castings ". The greatest drawback of the machines hitherto employed for this purpose consisted in that they had a piston, a valve or the like located in the molten metal; this drawback is eliminated in the machine forming the object of the present invention.
The die casting machine according to the invention comprises a receptacle for the material to be cast, a movable die, a movable pressure chamber provided with a bulb established to be immersed below the surface of this material for allow the latter to flow into the pressure chamber through this tubing, the latter constituting the only inlet duct for the entry of this material into the pressure chamber, a device being provided to lift this tubing above of the surface of the material, as well as a device for supplying and admitting a pressurized fluid into the pressure chamber, with a view to returning the material contained therein by the tubing into the die.
An embodiment of the object of the invention is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing, in which: FIG. 1 is a side elevation of the machine at rest; Fig. 2 is a section of the machine in the casting position; Fig. 3 is a section taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 2; Fig. 4 is a plan of the machine as seen in FIG. 2;

Fig. 9 is, on a larger scale, a horizontal section on a plane indicated by line 9-9 of FIGS. 1 and 10, showing the valve device which regulates the steam or other actuating fluid for raising and lowering the pressure chamber tubing as well as for closing and opening the die; Fig. 10 is a partial vertical section taken along line 10-10 of FIGS. 4 and 9; Fig. 11 is a horizontal sectional section similar to FIG. 9, along line 11-11 of fig. 1 and 10.
The die casting machine shown in the drawing comprises a usual hearth 1, in the upper part of which is housed a crucible 2. A curved pressure chamber 3 is immersed in the molten metal contained in the crucible 2. The pressure chamber 3 is provided with a duct curved from bottom to top 4 terminating in a pipe 5 directed from bottom to top, which, in the state of action of the machine shown in FIG. 1, is immersed below the surface of the molten metal in crucible 2; in the casting position, during operation of the machine as shown in fig. 2, this tubing is located above the surface of the molten metal.
The pressure chamber 3, at its end opposite the pipe 5, rises above the upper part of the crucible 2.
The pressure chamber 3 is supported by a cross member 6 provided with 7 ft journals voting in bearings 8 on the upper part of the hearth 1. The journals 7 to see to a backward and forward movement of the pressure chamber 3 between the immersion position of the tubing 5 in FIG. 1 and the exposed or casting position of the tubing 5 in FIG. 2. In the lowered position of the tubing 5 in fig. 1, the molten metal contained in the crucible 2 flows into the pressure chamber 3 through the open submerged tube 5 and the conduit 4; in the position of the pipe 5 in FIG. 2, the molten metal contained in the pressure chamber 3 can be expelled from it through the distribution duct 4 and the tubing 5 to come into a suitable matrix.
The tubing 5 is raised only slightly above the surface of the molten metal in the casting process, so that it is at all times essentially the same temperature as the molten metal in the crucible. The pressure chamber 3 acts as an automatic sump to draw charges of the molten metal from the crucible 2 through the same opening of the pipe 5 through which these charges are then expelled into the die.
The upper end of the pressure chamber 3 is closed by means of a head 9 having a lumen 10 to which is connected a pipe 11 for supplying suitable pressurized fluid, such as compressed air, to the upper end of the pressure chamber 3, in order to send the molten metal, from the. chamber (the pressure 3 through the distribution duct 4 and the tubing 5 in the die. The pressure chamber 3 has only two openings, the opening for the entry and exit of the molten metal and the opening 10 for inlet and outlet of compressed air to act on the molten metal in the pressure chamber 3.
We have a device at. fluid under pressure to oscillate the pressure chamber between its two positions. Pressure chamber 3 is fitted with an actuating arm 1? connected to a rod (the vertical piston 13 which carries a double-acting piston 14 in a cylinder 15. The cylinder 15 has a cylinder head 16 by which this cylinder is supported by an arm 17 fixed to the upper plate of the hearth 1. Steam is fed to the upper and lower ends of the cylinder 15 or is discharged therefrom through the upper and lower steam pipes 18 and 19.
When steam is supplied to the cylinder 15 through the upper steam pipe 18 and discharged through the lower steam pipe 19, the key pressure chamber 3 is brought from the filling position in fig. 1 to the casting position in fig. 2; when steam is supplied to the cylinder 15 through the lower steam pipe 19 and discharged through the upper steam pipe 18, the pressure chamber 3 is returned from the pouring position in fig. 2 to the filling position in fig. 1.
An interlocking device for holding rigidly the pressure chamber 3 in the casting position shown in FIG. 2, so as to be able to withstand without flexing the downward pressure of the die on the bulb 5 in the casting operation, comprising a tilting hook 20 pivoting on a pin 21 carried by the bracket 17 supporting the cylinder, this hook projecting into the path of the arm 12 when the latter is ashes. The hooked latch 20 is pushed towards the engagement position by the weight of a lever 22 which is operated by hand to disengage the hooked latch 20 from the arm 12 when this arm must be raised to lower the tubular 5. .
When this is raised from the submerged filling position in fig. 1 to the casting position clans, fig. 2, the arm 12 pushes aside the hooked latch 20 and engages it automatically when the arm 12 has reached the key limit of its downward movement, as shown in FIGS. 2, 3 and 4. The pipe 5 of the pressure chamber 3 is thus engaged and prevented from descending. When the operation of the. casting is completed, 1E: hooked latch 20 is released by a pre laid.
When the pressure chamber 3 has been snapped into position. casting, it then becomes and during the casting operation a fixed chamber containing the metal, the pipe 5 of which is located immediately above the surface of the molten metal in the crucible 2. As soon as the. pressure chamber 3 has thus been brought to the pouring position, the die is brought to the pouring position and clamped on the pipe 5; the parts of the machine for performing this operation resemble in general terms the corresponding parts of an already known casting machine.
The die comprises two relatively movable sections 23 and 24, each of which has in its lower field a recess 25 located so that, when the die sections 23 and 24 are brought together in the position for casting, the recess 25 fits over tubing 5. An inlet lumen 26, formed by a groove in the surface of each die section, extends from recess 25 to the interior of the die. The inlet light 26 coincides with the opening formed by the tube 5 for the admission of molten metal directly from the tube 5 into the die.
The tubing 5 of the pressure chamber 3 rises from the fully submerged position to the pouring position which is only immediately above the surface of the molten metal in the crucible 2, so that the tubing 5 and the metal it contains are kept hot at all times so that the molten metal flows freely.
A frame 27 is integral with the. upper plate of the hearth 1, and on this frame extend two horizontal parallel rods 28, one on each side of the machine, the outer ends of these rods 28 being provided with a support 29. On each of the rods <B > 28 </B> and longitudinally adjustable thereto is a split pad 30 which can be securely clamped in place by a clamping bolt 31 (fig. 1). Racks 32 are disposed on the underside of rods 28 and mesh with pinions 33 carried by a transverse shaft 34 mounted to rotate in bearings 30 and provided with a crank at one end.
The adjustable pads 30 provide for the adjustment of the die holder so that dies of various sizes can be brought into the desired casting relationship with the tubing.
An actuating cylinder 37 for the die is provided on its lower side with a supporting lug 38 between the bearings 30 on which it pivots by a journal shaft 39 around which the cylinder 37 can - oscillate with the parts carried by him. The die actuating cylinder 37 is disposed longitudinally of the machine and, at its end closest to the crucible 2 comprises a cylinder head 40 on which protrude rigidly four parallel rods 41 which extend rearward above. of crucible 2. The outer ends of the rods 41 support a die head 42 which can be adjusted on the rods 41 by nuts 43. The die section 23 is attached to this die head 42.
The nuts 43 provide for the independent adjustment of the die head 42 together with the die section 23 carried by the latter.
A second die head 44 for the other die section 24 is slidably mounted by means of 45 on the guide rods 41. The die holder 44 carries two plates 46 which support the die section 24. slide die head 44, together with guide rods 41 and die head 42, is supported by means of two vertically arranged sidebars 47 passing through lower pads and guided by sleeve bushes 45 of the die holder 44.
The upper ends of the bars 47 are assembled by a transom 48 which supports the die holder 44 in adjustment by means of an adjustment screw 49 which provides for the vertical adjustment of the die heads 42 and 44 relative to the tubing 5, in view to accommodate matrices of various dimensions. The lower ends of the support bars 47 are connected by a transverse shaft 51 provided with flanged rollers 52 established to circulate in slides formed by mortises 53 formed in the frame 27, these mortises 53 for guiding the rollers being slightly inclined. up and down to focus 1.
The rollers 52 and the inclined slides 53 perform the important function of clamping the die sections 3 and 24 securely to the slightly protruding tubing 5 in the cast engaged position thereof, as in Figs. 2 and 4, this clamping function being accomplished when the die holder 44 is actuated to slide over the guide rods 41 and to bring the die section 24 to the die section 23.
A second function of the rollers 52 and the slide 53 is to move the die sections 23 and 24 away from the tubing 5, when these are separated by the sliding of the die holder 44 in the opposite direction on the guide rods. 41 as in fig. 1.
The die holder 44 is actuated in its sliding movement on the guide rods 41 by a piston rod 54 which is connected to the latter and to a double-acting piston 55 in the cylinder 37 for actuating the die. Steam for actuating piston 55 is fed to cylinder 37 through pipes 56 and 57 connected to opposite ends of cylinder 37 and is discharged through the same pipes.
When steam is admitted to cylinder 37 through pipe 56, die section 24 carried by sliding die head 44 is moved towards and against die section 23 carried by the other die head 42; at the same time, the rollers 52 descending on the inclined slides 53 lower these closed die sections 23 and 24 onto the interlocked tubing 5 and firmly clamping the die against the tubing 5, the rollers 52 in this clamping action pressing. on the upper surfaces of the slides 53. When steam is admitted to the cylinder 37 through the pipe 57, the die holder 41 with the.
section of matrix 24 carried by the latter is recalled, by causing the rollers 52 to raise the inclined slides 53, first to thus separate the matrix from the tube 5 and then to move the sections of my tube 5 away from the tube 5. trice 23 and 24, as in fig. 1; this rise of the die sections 23 and 24 takes place when the latter are separated by the sliding of the die holder 44 towards the cylinder 37 for controlling the die. In the presence of the fact that the molten metal is fed to the die under pressure, it is very important to. once the tubing 5 of the pressure chamber 3 is securely snapped in place and the die is firmly clamped against the tubing 5.
The pressure chamber 3 is first oscillated to raise the tubing 5 and plug it into its high casting position, where it is held, while the die sections 23 and 24 are actuated to re-close and clamp on the pipe 5. Subsequently, the molten metal is forced out of the pressure chamber 3, through the pipe 4 and the pipe 5, in the die. After this, the die sections 23 and 24 are loosened, separated and raised to disengage the cast part and finally the pressure chamber 3, after being triggered, is put in oscillation to submerge the tubing 5 again.
The casting, carried by the die section 24, is expelled by means of ejectors 58 projecting on a plate 59 carried by rods 60 passing through the die holder 44 and guided by the latter. As the die holder 44 approaches the actuating cylinder 37, the free ends of the ejector rods 60 come into contact with appendices 61, carried by a plate of the stop 62 mounted for adjustment on the guide rods. 41 by nuts 63 and ejectors 58 push back the casting from the die section 24.
A suitable valve actuating device may be employed for actuating the pistons 14 and 55 of the respective pressurized fluid cylinders 15 and 37, in order to successively actuate the pressure chamber 3 as well as the die carriers 42 and 44 in the desired order.
Attached to the cylinder head 40 of the die actuating cylinder 37 is a two-part casing comprising a cam chamber 64 and a valve chamber 65 which contain the valves and the operating mechanism for them, as shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 11. The valve chamber 65 is rectangular in shape and a corner of this chamber (Fig. 9) is partitioned to form a main duct 66 which extends vertically throughout the length of the valve chamber 65. and to the upper end of which is connected a steam inlet pipe 6 7 (fig. 1, 4, 9 and 10).
In the opposite corner of the valve chamber 65 diagonally to the main steam inlet duct 66 is similarly arranged a main exhaust duct 68 which also extends vertically along the length of the valve chamber 65 and which, at the front and at the upper part (the latter, is fitted with an exhaust pipe 69 (fig. 1, 4, 9 and 10).
The irregular space remaining in the valve chamber 65 is divided by three transverse partitions, so as to form a row of four small pockets 70, 71, 72 and 73 superimposed between the main inlet duct 66 and the main duct. exhaust 68 as seen in fig. 10.
Four spring-loaded inlet valves 74, 75, 76 and 77 arranged in a vertical series are established to connect the main inlet duct 66 to the respective separate valve pockets 70, 71, 72 and 73 , while a similar series of exhaust valves 78, 79, 80 and 81 regulate the communication between these respective vapor pockets and the main exhaust duct 68.
To the respective steam pockets 70, 71, 72 and 73 are connected the respective pipes 57, 56, 19 and 18; the pipe 57 is connected to the die control cylinder 37 at its left end (fig. 2); the pipe 56 is connected to this cylinder at its right end; the pipe 19 is connected to the lower end of the cylinder 15 actuating the pipe; and the pipe 18 is connected to the upper end of the same cylinder. Any of these steam pipes may be connected either to the main steam inlet pipe 66 or to the main exhaust pipe 68 by its separate steam pocket provided with an inlet valve and an inlet valve. exhaust valve., as described above.
A cam mechanism is arranged to actuate these valves in the desired order. A vertical camshaft 82 is mounted for rotation in the cam chamber 64 and at its upper end is externally provided with a handwheel 83 on which protrudes a handle 84 (Figs. 1 and 4). The intake valve and the exhaust valve for each of the steam pockets 70, 71, 72 or 73 are actuated to be opened alternately by means of the cams carried by the camshaft 83 and acting on oscillating arms which in mesh with the respective valve stems.
For example, the steam inlet valve 74 for the pipe 57 which is connected to the left end of the cylinder 37, is actuated by a cam 85 which acts on a swing arm 86, as seen in fig. . 9; the exhaust valve 78 for this same steam pipe 57 is actuated by a cam 87 disposed next to the cam 85 and acting on an oscillating arm 88 disposed in the opposite direction. Each other pair of valves, comprising an intake valve and an exhaust valve, for the respective pipes 56, 19 and 18 is similarly actuated by a pair of cams acting on a similar pair of swing arms. For example, FIG.
It shows a cam 89 which acts on a rocker arm 90 to actuate the inlet valve 77 for the pipe 18 which admits steam at the upper end of the tubing actuating cylinder 15 to raise the submerged tubing 5 to. the casting position; another cam 91 is also shown next to it (the cam 89 on the camshaft 82 and this cam 91 acts on an oscillating arm 92 arranged opposite to actuate the exhaust valve 81 for this same pipe 18.
The raised faces closed different cams are longer or shorter depending on the length of time due to the respective valves having to be kept open during movement (the rotation of the camshaft 82. The valve actuator shown in the drawings is arranged so as to cause a complete operation of the die casting machine during two half-turns of the camshaft 82 which can be carried out in the same direction of rotation, in order to obtain thus a complete rotation of this shaft, or the U-turns can be done in opposite directions, half in one direction and half in the other.
In the presence of the fact that the valve actuating cams are set in symmetrical halves, the operating handle 84 can be moved in either direction, rotating forward or backward, from the position shown in fig. 1.
The cam 85 for actuating the intake valve 74 of the pipe 57 has an extended raised concentric cam face and the joint cam 87 for actuating the corresponding exhaust valve 78 has a short raised or pointed cam face.
The pair (the cams (not shown in the pictures) to actuate the intake and exhaust valves 75 and 79 respectively for the pipe <B> 50 </B> leading to the other end of the cylinder d The actuator 37 are complementary to the cams 85 and 87 in that the cam for actuating the inlet valve 75 has a short or pointed raised cam face, while the cam for actuating the exhaust valve 79 pos. There is a concentric extended cam face similar to cam 85 for the inlet valve 7-1.
pair of cams (not shown in the drawings) for actuating the valves for pipe 19 is likewise complementary to cams 89 and 91 for actuating the valves for pipe 18. Cam 89 for actuating inlet valve 7 7 for the pipe 18 leading to. the upper end of the cylinder 15 operating the pressure chamber has an extended protruding cam surface to keep this valve open during the casting operation, whereby the cam 91 has a short or sharp raised cam surface for opening the exhaust valve 81 for the upper end of cylinder 1.5 at the rest position of the machine shown in. fig. 1.
Therefore, in the complementary pair (the cam noted above (not shown), the cam for actuating the inlet valve 76 said pipe 19 terminating at, the lower end of the cylinder 15 has an actuating face. correspondingly short or pointed high cam, while its joint cam for actuating the exhaust valve 80 for pipe 19 has an extended high cam face.
When the operating handle 84 is made a quarter turn, from the position shown in fig. 1, there is no change in the position of the valves controlling the steam pipes 56 and 57 of cylinder 37 and, therefore, the open and raised position of the valve sections 23 and 24 shown in fig. 1 is held without change during this movement.
However, as can be seen from FIG. 11, during this quarter turn of the camshaft 82, a complete change was made in the positions of the valves controlling the cylinder 15 operating the manifold, the exhaust valve 81 of the pipe 18 having first been closed by the pointed cam 91, followed by the opening of the inlet valve (this pipe by the long-face cam 89. The complementary cams not shown have caused the opposite result as to the position of the valves for the pipe 19 ending at the lower end of the cylinder 15; they closed the intake valve 76 and opened the joint exhaust valve 80.
The piston 14 in the cylinder 15 is then forced to the bottom thereof, in order to thus oscillate the pressure chamber 3 and to raise its submerged pipe 5.
When the operating handle 84 is made to describe the ninety others as required up to the mounted position in fig. 4, in order to complete the half-turn of the camshaft 82, the position of the valves for the cylinder 15 which actuates the pressure chamber 3 is not changed; but the position of the valves for the cylinder 37 actuating the matrix is completely changed, as can be understood from the examination of fig. 9 and 11;
note that the extended concentric protruding cam face of cam 89 holds inlet valve 7 open, while corresponding exhaust valve 81 is held closed by its actuating cam 91 and maintaining the valve. cam 85 has closed the inlet valve 74 of the pipe 57 of the actuating cylinder 37 and the joint cam 87 having the short cam appendage has opened the corresponding exhaust valve 78; on the other hand, the complementary cams not shown have, at the same time, closed the exhaust valve 79 and opened the inlet valve 75 of the pipe 56 leading to the other end of the cylinder 37.
The piston 55 of the cylinder 37 is then actuated to close the die sections 23 and 24 as well as to lower them and clamp them on the rigidly engaged tubing 5. All the parts of the machine have then come from the <B> </B> position or green of rest shown in fig. 1 to the casting position shown in fig. 2 and 4. In this position of the parts of the machine, compressed air is admitted into the pressure chamber 3 through the port 10 and the pipe 11; it forces the molten metal from the pressure chamber 3, through the conduit 4 and the tubing 5, as well as through the port 26, into the die or mold comprising sections 23 and 24.
When the casting has solidified, the operating handle 84 is reversed and brought back from the position of FIG. 4 to the initial position in the fis. 1 .; or, instead of reversing the movement of handle 84.
one could continue its movement in the same direction to complete the rotation and with the same result. With the return of the handle 84 to its initial position, all the valves are actuated again but in the reverse order, so that first the die sections 23 and 24 are loosened and moved away from the tubing 5, and then the pressure chamber 3 which has been triggered by the attendant is brought from the casting position to the. immersion position of the tubu lure 5;
in this way, when the handle 84 is in the initial position of FIG. 1, the actuating parts of the machine were then brought successively in the order indicated, from their position of FIG. 2 to. their position in fig. 1, ready for the next casting operation.
The device for regulating the pressurized fluid which is supplied through the pipe 11 to the pressure chamber 3 to send the molten metal therefrom into the closed die will now be described. A valve box 93 is supported by a plate 94 threaded to the side of the hearth 1. The valve box 93 has a middle chamber 95 to which the pipe 11 is connected leading to the pressure chamber. Above this middle chamber 95, the box 93 is provided with an intake chamber 96 to which is connected an intake pipe 97. Below the middle chamber 95, the <B>, < / B> valve box 93 is provided with an exhaust chamber 98 which opens into the atmosphere through an exhaust port 99.
An intake valve 100 closed by a spring 101 controls the communication between the intake chamber 96 and the distribution chamber 95; an exhaust valve 102, closed by a spring 103, regulates the communication between the middle chamber 95 and the exhaust chamber 98. The stems of the valves 100 and 102 protrude beneath the valve box 93 and are arranged to engage the respective arms of a two-arm swing lever 104 carried by a swing shaft 105 mounted to rotate in the bearings on the backing plate 94. Each of these valves 100 or 102 is not open by the rocker lever 104 until the other valve has been able to close.
Normally, the intake valve 100 is held closed and the exhaust valve 102 is kept open, so that there is no fluid compressed on the molten metal in the pressure chamber 3. This state of affairs. valves 100 and 102 is held by means of a retractable spring 106 connected to a lever 107 on the oscillating shaft 105, the spring 106 being strong enough to dominate the spring 103 closing the valve and thus keeping the exhaust valve green. 102. The valves 100 and 102 are actuated to close the exhaust valve 102 and open the intake valve 100 in order to admit compressed air into the pressure chamber 3 by means of a lever 108 which s 'extends from bottom to top on swing shaft 105.
In order to admit the compressed fluid to the pressure chamber 3 in order to force the molten metal therefrom into the die, the lever 108 is brought to the left as seen from the right in FIG. 1, thereby to open the inlet valve 100, while the exhaust valve 102 remains closed in FIG. 7. As soon as the molten metal has been forced into the die, the pressure in the pressure chamber 3 is released before the die sections 23 and 24 are moved away from the tubing 5.
To release the pressure in the pressure chamber 3, it suffices to let go of the lever 108, after which the retractable spring 106 brings it to the right, thus causing the rocker lever 104 to oscillate to allow the valve to move. intake 100 to close and also so as to open the exhaust valve 102 for the exhaust of the compressed fluid (the pressure chamber 3 through the pipe 11, the exhaust chamber 98 and the port 99.
In order to prevent the admission of the compressed fluid to the pressure chamber 3, except when the die sections 2i3 and 24 are firmly clamped against the tubing 5, a guard at [I, 109, is adjustable longitudinally in a support bracket 110 attached to the adjacent bushing 45 of die holder 44.
The guard 109 for the <B>, </B> lever 1.08 is so arranged that when the die carrier 44 moves away from its actuating cylinder 37 to bring together and close the die sections 23 and 24 just as to tighten them on the pipe 5, the die 108 can then freely cross the free end of this guard, as seen in FIGS. 4 and 8.
However, in the return position of die holder 44, where die sections 23 and 24 are separated and raised above tubing 5, handle 108 engages with protruding guard 109, thereby engaging the pin. lever 108 so that it cannot be moved to admit compressed fluid to the pressure chamber 3. this engaged position of the lever at. hand 108 being shown in FIG. 1.
This prevents actuation of the lever 108 at the inopportune moment and the expulsion of molten metal from the pressure chamber 3 through its conduit 4 and the tubing 5 at a time when the die sections 23 and 24 are not securely clamped on. the pipe 5, the guard 109 being adjusted so as to release the net ma 108 only in the casting position of the machine parts.
The complete operation (the machine has been described briefly. Starting from the resting position of the machine in fig. 1, the handle 84 is first brought, in a movement of one hundred and eighty degrees, to the position of fig. 4, thus causing successively the rise and the engagement in position of the tubing 5 as well as the bringing together and the clamping against this tubing of the die sections 23 and 24, this being the casting position shown in fig. 2 and 4.
The handle 108 which has been released by the movement of the die holder 44, can then be moved to oscillate the oscillating shaft 105 to thereby admit compressed air to the upper part of the pressure chamber. 3, thus pushing the molten metal from the pressure chamber 3 through its conduit 4 and the. tubing 5 in the mold or die formed by the closed and clamped die sections 23 and 24.
After a brief period of rest for the solidification of the casting, the lever 108 is simply left to itself, which is returned by the retractable spring <B> 106; </B> the result is that first of all the admission of the compressed fluid to the pressure chamber 3 is cut off by the closing of the. intake valve 100 and immediately thereafter the compressed fluid in the pressure chamber 3 is allowed to escape through the opening of the exhaust valve 7.02.
Then, the handle 84 is returned by a half turn, from the position of FIG. 4 to its initial position of FIG. 1, with a view to raising and thus successively separating the die sections 23 and 24 as well as to lower and again immerse the. tubu lure 5 of the oscillating pressure chamber 3 which was triggered by the attendant raising the lever 22. The machine is now ready for successive repetitions of this complete operation.
By preparing small castings, the pressure chamber 3 contains a sufficient quantity of molten metal to shape several of these castings successively without oscillating this pressure chamber in order to draw more molten metal. This result is obtained by returning the handle 84 from the casting position, in FIG. 4, causing it to describe only ninety degrees of its return movement, thus loosening as well as raising and separating the die sections 23 and 24 without oscillating the pressure chamber 3 which is kept engaged with the casting position.
After this half-return of the handle 84, this handle is not returned completely to its initial position, but is reversed and returned to the casting position. As a result, the die sections 23. and 24 are again closed and clamped on the pipe 5, for a second casting operation without the pipe 5 having been immersed between the casting operations. These casting operations without immersing the tubing 5 can be carried out successively as long as sufficient metal is contained in the pressure chamber 3. The lever 108 is oscillated only once for each casting operation.
