Description

Wheel with pneumatic tires. The pneumatic tires suitable for the wheels of motor vehicles are constituted by an air chamber protected under a thick casing, the composition of which makes it a heat insulator preventing any heat exchange between the atmosphere and the pressurized air contained in the air chamber. .

From a certain speed commonly exceeded in the practice of self-mobilization considered as a sport, the heating of the tires becomes considerable; the internal pressure linked to the temperature increases as a result to such an extent that the tire loses all elasticity and that the vehicle runs practically on solid tires.

The result is that the slightest unevenness in the road transmits violent shocks to the wheel, of which the tire, which is a real block resistant to any elastic deformation, cannot act as a shock absorber.

The vehicle leaves the ground by one or more wheels; the rear wheel or wheels which turn freely in the air without touching the ground accelerate its or their speed of rotation to regain contact with the ground again with an excess of speed which causes very rapid wear of the tires and harmful shocks to the vehicle stability on the road. During this idle rotation of the rear wheel or wheels, the engine runs without providing this useful propulsion work and thus consumes a large quantity of fuel in pure waste.

But in addition to these significantly reduced operating conditions, a bursting of the matic tire is to be feared with its particularly serious consequences, facilitated by abnormal wear and overheating of the casings.

The present invention relates to a wheel with pneumatic tires overcoming all the aforementioned drawbacks. It is characterized by the fact that the air chamber occupies the entire capacity between a hub, two side flanges and a rolling casing, the heels of which are held in gutters stamped at the periphery of the flanges, the inner tube being on. the greater part of its surface, in contact in time with the metal flanges which carry out the thermal exchange between .l'atmosphere and the pressurized air contained in the chamber. The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, two embodiments of the present invention.

Fig. 1 is a vertical half-section of an improved wheel according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of a twin wheel.

The wheel comprises a hollow hub 1 on which are fixed the two flanges 2 and 3. The outer flange 2 is stamped in the form of a conical cap held at its central part on a bearing surface 5 of the hub by which it is centered on the latter. The prisoners 5 also distributed over the same conical surface receive the nuts 6 whose spherical base maintains the flange 2 on the hub. The flange 3 is stamped in the form of a dish with a flat bottom in its central part and is fixed on a bearing surface 7 of the hub using captors 8 screwed into this hub and braked by the pins 9. These prisoners also serve to fix the wheel on the brake drum 10 duplicate the bolts 11 serving at the same time to hold the axle sleeve 12.

The flanges 2 and 3 are stamped at their periphery so as to provide two opposed gutters 13 which receive the beads 14 of the tire rolling casing 15.

The inner tube 16 is constructed so as to occupy the entire space between the hub, the flanges 2 and 3 of the casing 15. Inflated using the valve 17, it applies intimately to the walls. internal cavity thus formed in the wheel.

We see, without further explanation, the enormous volume of air that can contain this air chamber, at least three times that which can receive a chamber with a circular section as they are currently used. More than half of the total surface represented by the walls of the chamber 16 is in contact with large metal surfaces exposed to the external atmosphere used here as a cooling agent. This cooling, which takes place for the most part via the lateral surface of the flanges 2 and 3, is all the more intense as the cooling air is renewed more quickly, that is to say precisely when the wheel is in operation. service and that the tire tends to heat up.

An automatic circulation of air molecules is established inside the chamber 16 during the rotation of the wheel. The coldest molecules, and consequently the densest, are projected by centrifugal force towards the periphery of the chamber and push back the hot, lighter molecules towards the cold part of the chamber in which they cool to be taken up by the current. circulation indicated by the arrows in fig. 1. The internal pressure is thus kept constant and with it the elastic qualities of the tire, absolutely illusory at certain speeds, in the tires used until then.

The chamber 16 is reinforced by bands of strong canvas at the place where it entangles in the vicinity of the heels of the casing in 17 '. These bands, which can be glued to the chamber or come from manufacture with it, prevent it from stretching out in this region under the action of the internal pressure. As a result, the chamber is forcefully applied at 17 and is absolutely fixed with respect to the wheel.

To prevent rotation of the casing 15 with respect to the flanges 2 and 3, the latter carry, also distributed over their periphery, rivets 18, the points 19 of which penetrate into the heels 14 which they immobilize in a certain way.

The replacement of a chamber is carried out quickly. It suffices to unscrew the nuts 6 to remove the flange 2 which completely uncovers the chamber 16. For ease of assembly of the latter, it can be fitted with bolts 19 ', the head of which is formed by a plate fixed between the chamber. and the fabric strip 17 and which are fixed to the flange 3 in holes suitably made in the thickness of the latter.

Fig. 2 shows the invention applied to a twin wheel. The two interior flanges 2 'and 3' are made integral by a riveted crown 20 provided at its periphery with air circulation holes 21. The end flanges 2 and 3 are blocked on the central crowns 22 which brace them relative to to the 2 'and 3' flanges.

Double-shank bolts 23, which can be tightened at 24, 25 and 26, allowing the twin elements of the wheel to be assembled together. These bolts 23 are also distributed over the same cylindrical surface and in the middle of the intervals between them are arranged the bolts 27 which fix the assembly of the twin wheel on the brake drum 10.

Thanks to this arrangement, the flange 2 can be dismantled only without it being necessary to completely remove the wheel. The latter can be turned over, which, on the road, can be an advantage when replacing the chamber of the flange 3, the wheel being thus supported and the chamber to be replaced accessible to the outside of the car.

Of course, all the improvements in details already described and illustrated in FIG. 1 can be applied to the mixed wheel shown in fig. 2.
