Description

Twin wheel for vehicles. The present invention relates to a twin wheel for vehicles. It is well known that the common twin wheels of a moving vehicle, when they encounter any obstacle, simultaneously receive a bottom-up thrust, even if only one of them meets the obstacle, which impresses on the obstacle. common axis a vertical displacement and a shock which is proportional to the effort that the wheels undergo, force which is transformed into a violent displacement of the axis itself.

The twin wheel which forms the object of the invention comprises two discs forming the elements of the wheel and which, by means of a gear arranged between them, are able to move, independently of one of the two. the other in the planes perpendicular to the axis of the wheel, said gear having a cross-shaped plate which is integral with the axis of the wheel and whose arms carry at their end a rotary pinion each of these meshing pinions with a pair of opposing mesh hoops attached to the respective wheel elements. Said elements are therefore coupled together in such a way that when one of them encounters an obstacle, the shock that it receives is not directly and completely transmitted to the axis, but it is divided between the axis and the other element not in fluenced.

The latter receives an equal force, but in the opposite direction to that of the element which rises to overcome the obstacle by increasing its grip on the ground.

The invention is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing.

Fig. 1 schematically shows the displacement of the axis of a twin wheel of the ordinary type; Figs. 2 and 3 show the respective positions of the axis and of the two twin wheel elements overcoming an obstacle according to the invention; Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7 show in diagram the operation of said twin wheel; Fig. 8 shows in cross section a twin wheel comprising the aforementioned principle; Fig. 9 shows a front view of FIG. 8, part of which in section; Fig. 10 shows a detail of the device for closing the space between the elements of the twin wheel; Fig. 11 explains in a schematic manner the operation of certain parts of the twin wheel.

In said drawing, FIG. 1 shows the way of moving from axis 1 with ordinary twin wheels, that is to say of lifting by a quantity b equal to the height a of the obstacle that any of the two elements must overcome.

Figs. 2 to 7 and 11 show how, during the lifting of any one of the two elements 2 and 3, of the twin wheel the axis 1 of the vehicle lifts by an amount c equal in value to half of a.

In addition, one of the two elements constantly rests on the ground contributing to the traction of the vehicle if the wheel is the traction wheel. According to fig. 8 the twin wheel is composed of two independent elements 2 and 3. On the axis 1 is fixed, in the most suitable way, a hub 4 integral with the brake drum 5. The hub 4 is provided with a plate 6 having the shape of a cross, on the four ends of which are pivoted four pinions 7. These pinions mesh respectively with four pairs of racks 8 and 9.

The elements 2 and 3 which constitute the twin wheel are each constituted by a disc 10 provided with a central hole 11 the diameter of which is such as to allow all the maximum displacements to which the axis 1 is subjected relative to the wheel. The discs 10 bear on their outer circumference the rims 12 on which the tires 13 are mounted. The rims 12 are mounted on the discs 10 by means of devices capable of facilitating their replacement and that of the tires, which are mounted on them.

These devices are described below. Each disc carries on its inner surface four guides 14 and 15 arranged at right angles to each other; in these guides slide with a perpendicular movement between them two pairs of plates 16 and 17. These plates are each provided with elongated central holes 18 and 19, which by coinciding with one another allows the passage of the hub 4. As is stated in evidenced by fig. 8 and 9, the plates 17 are not in the same plane of the plates 16 and this to allow them to move with respect to each other and both with respect to their own element without meeting each other.

On the plates 16 and 17 are mounted by means of bolts the four pairs of racks 8 and 9, the racks of each pair being arranged one vis-à-vis the other and in service engagement with the 'one of the pinions 7. We will thus have that the two pairs of racks 8 will be in engagement with the gears arranged on the opposite ends of one of the arms of said cross, while the two pairs of racks 9, perpendicular to the gears. first, will be in engagement with the gears placed on the ends of the arm of the cross perpendicular to the first arm.

The ends of the arms of the cross on which the gears are pivoted have the heads 20 provided with flanges which enclose the racks between them to oblige the latter to always maintain themselves in alignment with the gears during any movement of the elements 2 and 3 of guides 14 and 15 which are fixed on them.

To maintain the contact and the distance necessary for the proper functioning of the different parts, that is to say the distance between the elements 2 and 3 on the outer surface of the discs 10, adhere two discs 21 and 22, the first of which is attached to the outer end of the means 4 and the second to the inner part of the hub, immediately near the brake drum 5. Between the guides 14 and 15 and the plates 16 and 17, as well as between the discs 21 and 22 and the elements 2 and 3, are arranged antifriction metal linings 23 or ball support intended to reduce as far as possible the friction between the parts, as well as their wear.

The operation of the wheel is very simple and is shown in figs. 4 to 7 and 11 .. Assuming that element 3 encounters an obstacle, it naturally lifts to the height necessary to overcome it. During its lifting the element 8 also lifts the plate 16 and the two racks 8 (upper and lower) which are connected to it.

The raising of the rack 8 obviously produces the rotation of the two gears 7, which find a fulcrum on the opposing racks of the torque tending to lower it. But since they are fixed to the plates of the element 2 which cannot be moved in this direction, and since the latter rests on the roadway, it does not move under such pressure.

Considering fig. 8 and 11, we can easily see that the pinion 7 acts as a lever arm with its center of rotation in O (fig. 11). Assuming that the device is supported by the pivot O of the arm or pinion 7 under the action of a bottom-up thrust of the element 8 of an angular amplitude a, we will naturally have a displacement equal and contrary to l 'element 2, that is to say of an angular amplitude a, but from top to bottom. The total of the movements in the opposite direction of the two elements 2 and 8 will be 2a. The center O of the pinion or arm 7 is located exactly in the middle between the two displacements, therefore the axes of the pinions rise by an amount equal to half of that from which the element has been raised.

During this period the racks 9, fixed to the plate 17 and perpendicular to the racks 8 and to the plates 16 follow the movement of the cross 6 since the plates 17 can slide in the guides 15 thus making free the movement of the racks 8.

It is the same for the other element, and as it is shown in fig. 6 and 7 the movement of the elements can take place in any position of the cross plate 6 and the racks 8 and 9, the position at right angles of the parts allowing any combination of movements. The openings 18 and 19 of the plates (fig. 9) allow free movement of the axis 1.

From the examination of fig. 8 it is easy to notice that the rims 12 can be removed from the outside to facilitate the replacement of the tires.

To perform this operation, it is sufficient to unscrew bolt 24 by removing circle 25.

For the inner rim it suffices to unscrew the bolts 26. To protect the inner parts of the wheel, namely the grained parts, the racks and the guides, a flexible connection 27 made of leather or other suitable material having the form cylindrical cylinder folded like a bellows. The ends are fixed to two circles 28 which are fixed under the rims 12 of the two elements.

This arrangement allows the free movement of the elements.

Fig. 10 shows the method of fixing connection 27 to the elements. 28 is one of the circles and 29 is a flexible and elastic metal wire to hold in the desired position the part 27. 80 denotes the tire valve.
